Bast ft. Odelia
Self awareness wasnât Bastâs strong suit but he was capable of understanding that he was shit at communicating over text message. The curse had worn off but it hadnât mattered much. He still found himself standing outside of Odeliaâs door awkwardly and scrolling over the text messages. Part of him was convinced that he was overreacting.Â
Part of him would gnaw at him over what if he wasnât. After all, everyone had been acting completely off while they were cursed. He stuffed his cell into the pocket of his old leather jacket and knocked on Odeliaâs door. He waited; albeit not patiently. This is stupid. Sheâs going to think youâre a stalker. He sighed as he regretted his own decisions as he waited for her to answer the door. He just needed to confirm she was, actually, okay. And then he could leave it be. And if she concluded he was a stalker, well.... heâd been thought of as much worse. Â

The shift was so sudden that Bastâs dopey grin was stuck on his face for a moment longer than it should have been.
Wait. Whatâ?
He blinked at the spot the snowman had been and then looked up at Odelia with concern. He didnât bother to hide any of that confusion that he felt.
Was it the bad joke?
No... she had laughed!
His blue eyes searched over her as if trying to piece a now broken puzzle together.
âHumor you?â He shook his head. âThanks for humoring me!â He laughed softly but also seemed unsure.
Without knowing what line he had crossed to have her suddenly shut down, he moved to pick up the trash from the floor.
He took a step towards the door and opened his mouth to start some form of a bantered goodbye but then he stopped and turned to face her. He remembered why he had shown up in the first place.
His eyebrows furrowed some and he was obviously struggling to say something more appropriate for the moment.
âGotta promise me something.â He hid the seriousness of his request under a lopsided grin.
âBefore you go thinking anything stupid again you have to consult me first.â
He winked.
âThatâs my wheelhouse. Not yours.â
He really wasnât sure where he stood with her after the sudden shift or where things had gone wrong, but he didnât want to leave without at least trying to repair the moment.
polarisbriâ:
It felt surreal. The typical dumbass grin he wore melted into a sincerely awed expression as the snowflakes paused and then burst around them.
Danger was no where on Bastâs radar. And even if she called his attention to it, he wouldnât take caution. At least, not enough to create distance between them. Not unless she requested it.
The temperature in the room had dropped and Bast could see his own breath as he watched her search for the clothes. Really, he was staring. His brain couldnât comprehend her suffering and her loneliness. He didnât get why someone like Odelia was alone so often. He had determined so far that she was kind, smart, had a sense of humor, and was hot as hell beautiful.
When Odelia came back with a hat, Bast laughed and adjusted it on the snowmanâs head. âThis is going to end up looking like a Halloween decoration if you put me in charge.â He warned playfully and then dug into his pockets to try and figure out what to use.
He produced some loose change, a cigarette and an old metallic looking gum wrapper that had been balled up.
The penny and quarter went to be eyes, the gum wrapper was the nose, and then he stuck the cigarette in the snowmanâs mouth.
âDo you know where snowmen keep their money?â
He was back to grinning like an absolute idiot.
If she took the bait for the joke, heâd reach over and with a slight of hand trick, heâd pretend to pull another quarter from behind her ear.
âIn a snow bank.â

Odelia, although delighted, was being reckless and stupid. The last time sheâd had this sort of fun, sheâd sent her entire town outside of Tel Aviv in frost for the entire growing season. They had all died because of her negligence. Her siblings, her parentsâ they suffered at her hand. What right did she have to be so careless with her powers?
Odelia watched as he gave the snowman a face, and clapped her hands in delight as he pulled a quarter from behind her ear. She smiled in spite of herselfâ Bast had a way of improving her mood and almost making her forget her own trauma.
Almost.
With a wave of her hand, all of the snow and snowmen disappeared, the quarters and gum wrapper and cigarette clattering to the floor.
Her sisterâs voice rings in her ears, please donât shut me out again!
âWell,â Odelia bristles, the smile on her lips admittedly much more fake. âThat was fun. Thank you so much for humoring me.â

There was a painfully delayed response. And then a rather abrupt double take as Bast realized that he was the one being spoken to by the highly attractive woman. His eyebrows knit and he asked a reflexive âWhat?â however his brain was actually processing what she had said. Shit. It finally seemed to click and he stopped staring at her face and moved his attention to the wallet. His wallet. âAh--Uh- Thanks.â He stumbled through the appreciation with a blatant amount of rather unnecessary tension. He accepted the wallet back but kept his eyes on Odelia as if she might bite him. His expression wasnât fear. He looked as though he was attempting to solve a very difficult puzzle. Almost all at once his demeanor changed and he seemed to get a burst of bravery. âAre you--â He started to ask it at a full volume but then glanced around and lowered his voice. â-- one of them?â He made a wide and sweeping gesture at the door behind him that was an administration office for the school. Full of wizards. Magical professors. Teachers who could give him adult-you-fucked-up-detention. He was still attempting to wake himself up out of this crazy inception dream called âPolaris.â The man standing before Odelia was actually far older than he looked, however, the immature way he dressed didnât help his cause. He was still stuck in the style of wearing beanies, ripped jeans, and converse. None of it really helped him look like he was âadultingâ.Â
âExcuse me,â Odelia moves one gloved hand in the direction of the ground, her face the perfect picture of stillness. Normally sheâd go straight back to minding her own business, but in this case, well, she canât really hold back. It looks like a wallet, and someone else would probably come and steal it if she doesnât say anything. âSorry, but youâve dropped something. Looks important.â

polarisbriâ:
There wasnât a moment of hesitation before Bast was playing in the snow that formed around him.
He scooped up a handful and started to pack it into a snowball and narrowed his eyes at Odelia as if he was sizing her up. A worthy adversary in a snowball âfight.â
He lofted it lazily into the air in an arc that she could easily avoid but it might âpoofâ onto the top of her head on contact if she didnât move.
The assembly of the snowman had Bast laughing and totally amazed. âWait! Thatâs cheating!â He mocked a complaint and pointed at the ground.
âYouâre supposed to wrestle the snow on the ground and hope it sticks to itself and then push it around the yard randomly until itâs big enough!â He teased.
He stepped up and touched the snowman as if to confirm it was real.
The fire witch didnât emanate heat. In fact, most of the time Bast looked and acted like a typical âmortal.â It was only in times of extreme upset that the flames appeared; and typically he was good natured.
âIâll take either.â He nodded sagely with a smirk. âAny reason to celebrate right?â
What he wasnât explaining is that âholidaysâ of any sort werenât something he experienced as a child. Instead, celebrations were more phrased as âmomâs boyfriend got out of jail!â And âweâre not getting evicted this month.â Or, âsomeone remembered your birthday correctly hereâs a mostly used gift card.â
He wasnât so sheltered. He knew the rest of the world wasnât the same as his. He knew of families that had large family get togethers, feasts, and decorations.
âWhat can we decorate our new friend with?â He asked and looked around her apartment briefly before turning an eager look back to Odelia.
There was genuine happiness on his face; fully transparent with his emotions. Although he might have dressed the part of the âbad boyâ he didnât act it. It was mostly a defensive tactic he kept from his mortal life. If he looked like he was a threat; maybe he could have peace.

As the snowball sails toward her head, Odelia momentarily debates letting it hit her or brushing it away. Instead, she opts to show off a little more. This is dangerousâ nobody has ever reacted in such a way to her powers, and having someone appreciate them⌠itâs like a sip of the most incredible wine, gulping it down and then being told youâll only have that one glass. She knows it wonât end well, but itâs so freeing.
Instead, she waves a hand and the snowball bursts into a million tiny crystals that suspend in the air for a moment before she sends them whirling on the wind she creates, falling down around her like diamonds that settle in her hair, on her nose.
âRight,â She nods, before launching into her drawers for an article of clothing she can wrap around the snowfamily.
Thereâs not too many wintry garments in her possession, believe it or not, as Odelia always runs chilly and the temperature doesnât affect her. If anything, sheâs easily overheatedâ anything above freezing is balmy for her.
Still, sheâs able to dig up a couple of scarves, hats, and headbands, that might do their job. âYouâre on your own for the faces.â

Bast watched in stunned wonder.
Odeliaâs skill far surpassed his own and Bast was new enough to magic that many things still impressed him.
âOh how coolââ he muttered to himself without really thinking as he watched the ice crystals form. But then he grinned like a big idiot. âPun intended.â
When she asked if he wanted to build a snowman, he tossed the snowball up and down a couple times in his hand. âWho says no to that question?!â
He then pointed one finger at the ground and then one hand outside. âHere? There? Where?â He quizzed her, sounding eager.
âAnd how?!â

She glances up, and snow accumulates more rapidly on the ground, covering her dorm in a thick, powdery carpet. Itâs probably dangerous, doing this, but maybe there was some unknown reckless-inducing herb in that tea. Odelia shouldnât be so selfish, considering the last time she used magic it was against her sister, again, but sheâs fairly confident that Bast can take her. Can he even freeze, she wonders? She once knew a fire witch who could melt snow as soon as it touched her skin.
Who says no to that question? Well, she can think of a couple of people who might. Immediately, sheâs rolling another snowball and throwing at him, grinning. âGive me a few minutes and Iâll make it a regular winter wonderland in here.â
Once the snow is about a foot thick, she simply waves her hand, and three giant snowballs appearâ one for the head and two for the body. Despite the terror radiating through her limbs at the thought of screwing this up and hurting him, she feels so much better now that sheâs surrounded by her source element. Itâs almost as if color starts to return to her cheeks, and maybe she stands up a little taller. Odelia removes her gloves and flicks her hands upwards, sending one huge snowflake up into the high ceiling of the room, that explodes into a blanket of snow that gives her entire apartment a good dusting.
âHanukkah in August,â she jokes, shrugging. âWay better than Christmas in July.â

He wouldnât push the issue any further. Heâd said his piece. Now it was up to Odelia to believe him or not.
He watched her set down her tea and expected to be politely excused from her room. After all he was quite bold to assume that he, being a lowly first year, was welcomed to speak to her the way he was.
âItâs growing on me.â He grinned. âI think I could be convinced to stay and hang out for awhile.â
It was all back to sounding like his typical banter. He actually loved being at Polaris and was actually attempting to not actively get kicked out. Some classes just tested his patience and academic capacity more than others.
âNovaâs is a pretty sweet spot too if youâre into that sort of thing.â He offered nonchalantly since he couldnât remember seeing Odelia ever stop by there before.
It was then Bast realized how close he had gotten to her while trying to make his point. There was a bit of an awkward pause and he reached for his tea cup, made a cheers type motion towards her with it and then took a sip.
âIs this where you put your pinky up or....?â He was just trying to crack jokes now. He likely looked incredibly foolish trying to play prim and proper while wearing a leather jacket.
polarisbriâ:
Bast wasnât smart. Not booksmart at least. He did, however, have a pretty good read on people. Being a bartender as his preferred career path prior to Polaris meant that he needed to have an emotional understanding of people.
Typically in these situations heâd crack open a bottle of wine, crack a joke, and attempt to get the person to forget their troubles. Even if only temporarily. This was a very different situation.
He couldnât see her withdraw but he could feel it. The extra deadbolt locked on her emotional state.
âI think in order to be a PA at one of the most prestigious magic colleges in the world a person would have to be freaky intelligent.â He smiled softly and wasnât budging on that point. However, he felt like it was the wrong argument. This wasnât about whether Odelia was smart or not.
Cautiously, he shifted from where he was to move and take a seat next to her on the couch. The shared proximity meant to show that he was with her in this fight against self doubt.
He sat and angled himself to face her with his elbows leaned on his knees.
âEveryone keeps telling me that this place gives people a chance to start over. Really change. Thrive even from what it sounds like. Even for someone like me.â He then gave her a pointed look.
âSo, if this place has hope for a dumbass with a high implosion riskââ he pointed at himself. âThen I refuse to believe that our world would be better off without you. No matter what happened in the past.â
He hoped that sheâd understand his sentiments were genuine.
Heâd only be able to keep polite language together for so long though. And of course ended with:
âNo one did us any favors to help us figure this shit out until now. Now we stand a chance to not wreck ourselves.â
He grinned a bit.
âFuck the past.â

Fuck the past.
Oh, if only it were that simple.
Heâs correct, though, as Polaris is a place of rebirth and renewal. The Ursas told her that much herself when they plucked her out of Alaska. Castle Hills is cold and snowy in the winter months, but itâs practically a beach vacation compared to what Odeliaâs used to. Still, her lips are curved into a slight smile.
Thatâs all she is, anywayâ smiles and politeness. Keeping everyone at an armâs length. She doesnât want to, but itâs easier. It hurts less people in the long run.
âVery sound advice,â She nods, gently setting down her cup of tea on the table in front of them. She understands where heâs coming from. She doesnât know much about his past, but he must have something in there thatâs worth leaving behind.
She doesnât.
The young faces of her siblings flash across her vision, and her hope is that, somehow, she might be able to make things right with them, someday.
But his words could mean something else to herâ forget about whatâs been done, and focus on the future. Thatâ she supposes she can do.
Clearing her throatâ and the air, she thinksâ Odelia very quickly changes the subject. âHow are you liking Polaris so far? Better than the first few days, I hope?â

âSâall good. You can still always hit it up for the food.â
He smirked a bit. âI figured you werenât a hardcore boozer. Maybe someone who liked those fancy bottles of ice-wines with the french names that I canât ever prenounce.â
He then purposely put his pinky up.
âI wonder if they do this for balance.â He teased and took an obnoxious looking sip. If nothing else, he typically clowned around until whoever he was with was laughing.
Afterward though, he set the tea cup down very slow and dramatic like in order to not break the tea cup. A bright grin appeared when he was successful.
âIâm trying to get Karaoke going at Novaâs. The place could use some laughs. You should come. Free entertainment.â
He looked her over as if waiting for his ideas to get shut down.
âWhatâs your brand of fun?â

âOh, thatâs the pub, right?â She asks, setting her cup down gently. âYes, I think Iâve been there once or twice. Iâm not⌠totally a drinking girl, you know? I bet you could have figured that out pretty easily.â She raises and lowers her shoulders in a shrug. Sheâs tried to stay out of town for the most part, simply because the fewer people she encounters, the better off society is.
âYou donât have to put your pinky up,â Odelia laughs, shaking her head. âOr at least, Iâve never actually seen anyone do that in person.â

No one has ever spoken to her like this.
Lord knows Odelia has never spoken to herself like this. Years in the meditation and self-healing class still hasnât given her the opportunity to let go of her past. Let go of being scared that you might not be good enough. Let go of saying you were meant to be alone.
But part of her is fully aware of the fact that Bast is saying all of this to be kind, and truly, if he knew what she was capable of, he wouldnât be saying these things. No one would.
Youâre too smart to think something so dumb.
She wonders if Frankensteinâs monster knew that he was, in fact, a monster. She wonders if, when a lion tears down a wounded gazelle on the savanna, it contemplates that gazelleâs lifeâ its herd, its children, its mate. Is it horror? Or is it simply the food chain? Evolution? Is it whatâs meant to be, or is she some anomaly who is not meant to walk this earth.
âYouâre very kind,â Odelia knows how to paint on a smile and sip her tea, unfazed and unblinking on the outside while that storm brews within. Her stomach suddenly drops at the notion that a near-perfect stranger is telling her that sheâs good when sheâs spent the better part of a century telling herself that sheâs not. One of them is wrong, and Odelia is pretty sure itâs not her.
âI suppose being a PA means I automatically give off the impression that Iâm smart, right?â Itâs meant to tease him back, but only because she cannot comprehend the magnitude of his words, and how much they mean to her.
Bast wasnât smart. Not booksmart at least. He did, however, have a pretty good read on people. Being a bartender as his preferred career path prior to Polaris meant that he needed to have an emotional understanding of people.
