Oddworld: Conar’s Ambition, Chapter 13, Draft 1, Part 20

He brought his arms to his sides and leaned forward. Sure enough, his condensation-covered visor became clear once more, and his lungs began yearning for air rather than nicotine again. Just a few twitches from his tail prevented him from tumbling aimlessly, though he still found himself wobbling more than he’d like. His arms helped stabilize, but he bobbed towards the surface if he didn’t paddle downwards.

He kept this in mind as he resurfaced for one last gulp of air. Skimming on the surface felt great, but all this diving felt… unnatural.

To his horror, he found that the way in was grated. Thick wooden poles crossed to keep anything or anyone from sneaking in that way. He could tell as he approached that he couldn’t hope to squeeze through, and as he tried to strike, the flowing waters made his arms too sluggish to make any good cuts.

He was up against the grate now and he was starting to worry.   Not only was he feeling the pain from his lungs, but he wasn’t sure he could swim away now. His fatigue mixed with the current was keeping him pinned to the grate. Maybe he could push off and turn back quickly, before anyone spotted him…

No! He made it too far to be stopped without a fight! He slowly climbed up, taking a sputtering breath before daring to look around. He didn’t see any Mudokon feet tromping towards him, or any sign of Mudokons at all. He decided he could tread water for a moment. Looking up, he could see that the wall was far thicker than the grate that was stopping him, expertly cut. The grate, too, was well-carved, but it was clear they had to insert each piece. Conar considered this, and took another deep breath.

tetris 99 is just not what i like abt tetris. dirt 5 feels like competitive plastic chewing. forced TAA, crashes, jerkweed voice fuckers spitting in your ear constantly, gross dutch angled race countdown, bogus music 😑 bogus! rockstar games also frustrate me (tho i like RDR2 & table tennis (& i probably like the manhunt games)); those awful menus do nothing but clunk. (having to hit “A” scroll the map in the map tab in GTA V? when the map is the only thing you can interact with on screen? 😑)

I was around 7 years old when my sister showed me a drawing of Abe that she did. I was like “h u h” and Abe gave me a certain weird vibe that was hard to explain. a mixture of discomfort and intrigue.

she began telling me about the Oddworld games and showing me cutscenes and stuff, and I happily and excitedly watched her play them. I made a DeviantArt when I was 8 or 9 (has been abandoned for yEEEARS) where I mostly posted my Oddworld fanart.

i’ve only finished Munch’s Oddysee and New n’ tasty once each, getting the good ending both times. I played part of Stranger’s wrath but stopped at Packrat Palooka (I think?)

there’s multiple! finishing Munch’s oddysee for the first time and getting the good ending (I think I cried? lol) and any other one would probably be watching my sister play the games lmao

oh man. i’ve had a lot of Oddworld ocs that have come and gone. the first one I made was called Bob, an average looking mudokon with a single red feather for hair. he stuck with me the longest but I abandoned him a couple years ago. he still means a lot to me though, he’s one of the ocs i’ve had for the longest in general. may revive him in future

though I am actually working on an OC at the moment! his name is Leif, he’s a farmer mudokon who grows crops and stuff. i’ll probably make an account for him later.

yep! I can’t remember all of them, but one is that Toby is a teenager.

it influenced me to develop morals. the stories were so creative and inspiring, but also based on actual things that were going on in the world. the Oddworld games have this unique and indescribable vibe about them (in a good way)

also Oddworld just made me really happy. it’s been one of my most important and biggest interests, it was the first thing I ever became really obsessed with, and I have so many positive childhood memories.

17. Random Unpopular opinion: Halo CE’s level, ‘The Library’ is not a hard level on Legendary. I find it to be one of the easiest honestly.

so word on the street is that there’s gonna be a wrath of cortex remaster. but given what we’ve seen from crash’s future (the previous leaks, the toys for bob concept art, the mysterious mask from the playstation advert), i’m gonna take it with a grain of salt, especially since the leaker said their leaks are subject to change. BUT this does pose an interesting scenario, what if it’s a reimagining ala oddworld: soulstorm? could be interesting. but there’s not enough content on wrath of cortex to warrant a 1:1 remaster like n. sane trilogy, it’d need to be a complete do-over and expand on what worked and get rid of what didn’t. there’s definitely potential there, though. especially if it’s being referred to as activision’s next big release.

also the pvp crash game can mean anything, i wouldn’t jump on it being directly connected to bash, though it’s possible they may do a mario party style titling and make a straight up bash 2, but who knows. the fact that it’s on mobile is interesting to me though, maybe it’s connected to the temple runner one? we’ll have to wait and see.

A Look At Stuff You Probably Never Heard Of: Code Monkeys

You know how video game movies are a thing? Even movies that are like video games, like Scott Pilgrim vs the World? Well, ever heard of a TV show that’s basically a video game? Because that’s what we’re taking a look at today. Today, we’re looking at... Code Monkeys!

Code Monkeys was an American TV show created by Adam de la Peña and aired in America on the G4 channel (a channel that usually did video games, internet content, and the occasional airing of Japanese game shows like Ninja Warrior and Unbeatable Banzuke) where it started airing on July 11th, 2007 and ended on August 17th of the following year after two seasons. The entire series is animated through NES-style sprites.

Set in the early 1980s (possibly before or after the Great Video Game Crash of 1983), there is a video game company known as GameaVision, located in Silicon Valley, California. In the company, there are two employees who serve as the main characters; Dave, who is a slacker; he’s rude, crude, brash, lazy, and prefers to spend his time having sex and getting high. And his friend is Jerry, who’s basically his exact opposite, being high-strung, easily stressed out, but more level-headed and respectful to everyone, taking his job seriously.

There are other characters who work at GameaVision, such as the new CEO, Bob T. Larrity, who’s a stereotypical Texan businessman who bought the company solely to make more money, despite not knowing anything about games. His son is Dean, who isn’t too bright (As his dad points it, “that boy is R-E-tarded”), but he’s quite strong and is used to help his dad’s illegal activities. The only female video game programmer is Mary, who is a strong feminist, causing everyone else to believe she’s a lesbian. Her games focus around women, but not exactly right in terms of their message, like having a female character eat until she throws up so she can fit into a dress. Todd is the fantasy programmer, being obese, wearing a horned helmet, and speaking in Ye Olde English. He can’t see the line between fantasy and reality, causing him to be despised by his co-workers, so see him as annoying and a “creep” or “douche”. Black Steven is, as you can guess, the only Black man in the company, and like your average tumblr-user, he’s heavily racist towards White people with his game focusing on prejudice. He’s foul-mouthed, ill-tempered, and highly violent with an interest in guns. Clare is the receptionist and serves as the exact opposite of Mary, being fairly dim-witted, selfish, and air-headed with an interest in BDSM. Benny is a Korean boy who was illegally adopted by Larrity and works as the game tester for the company. He’s fed a diet of cigarettes, Pixy Stix, pure sugar, and Amphetamines to stunt his growth and keep him energized so he can continue playing games. Finally, Clarence is the company’s audio designer, providing music for everyone’s games. He’s flamboyantly and openly gay, constantly sings when he speaks, always sparkling, and can levitate and move through walls with his “Gay Magic”. Sometimes, he pitches homosexual-themed games.

As you can tell, the show is styled after old 8-bit games, complete with HUDS, health bars, items, and even a score system. While there isn’t much music, the character animations seem just like the old 8-bit days. But the biggest part of the show is the humor, which mainly focuses on dark comedy and physical humor, often having people getting beaten up.

How appropriate that a TV show based on a game still gets a rating. But in this case, it’s still my Final Recommendation: Never Let Go Of It||Get It||Hold Onto It||Try It||Consider It||Stay Away From It

The show was a very enjoyable experience when it aired, but the humor, which, much like Ghost Stories, isn’t for everyone, since it makes fun of anyone and everyone. BUT, a lot of work on the show makes it apparent that those working on it know a thing or two about games, as it’s chock full of video game reference.

Like, if a character winces in pain (or if they smell a horrible scent), they resemble damage sprites from the NES game, River City Ransom (which Scott Pilgrim borrows heavily from, with beating people up to get money), the Jumping sound effect from Super Mario Bros. plays when someone jumps, and there was even an episode where the group is saved by Neo-Nazis by some cowboys, and the battle between the cowboys and Nazis plays out like an early entry Final Fantasy title. And that very same episode has a reference to Wolfenstein 3D.

I’d also like to mention that oftentimes, real world people who worked with, games, technology, and nerd culture are brought in to voice themselves, typically to pitch a video game idea to Larrity, only to be rejected. One such example is Lorne Lanning pitching Oddworld, as seen above. In fact, the previous owner of the company before Larrity was Steve Wozniak  And in one episode, Todd harasses speaks with Gary Gygax (co-founder of Dungeons and Dragons).

They really play around with the fact that it’s basically a video game, with characters getting or losing points depending on how things go and having various items in their Inventory. At at one point, the game actually crashes, causing a Player to eject the game at put it back in, starting the events of the episode back to the beginning.

Oddworld: Conar’s Ambition, Chapter 13, Draft 1, Part 21

Sure as anything, the bars were slotted into shallow holes chipped into the rocks. All he’d have to do was grab onto a couple of the poles and slide them up, and no one would be the wiser. The only issue was he’d still be pushed by the current into the grate the whole time.

He tried latching his tail onto the smooth rocks below him, but it didn’t take long to feel himself slipping. He had to use one of his hands to steady himself as the other lifted one bar, and his tentacled grabbed the other.

It was an eternity of fighting the lack of air and the rushing water, but he was finally able to squeeze through to the other side. He quickly spun around and grabbed the grate, clambering up to be able to breathe again unnoticed.

Now that he was on the other side, he could take better stock of his surroundings. As he clambered to the side, he could hear a couple of Mudokons chatting about something falling from a nearby train, and he mentally kicked himself for not following the tracks earlier. But this was no time for hindsight; he had to find a place to rest, hopefully close enough to Slim.

Well, he could hear the chatter on his right, but he tuned it out to listen out more. Over the rushing water, he couldn’t hear much, but no one else was talking nearby, so he risked a glance beyond the gate’s frame. He ducked back as he saw a Mudokon facing him, but no cry of alarm came. He slowly peeked again, and almost shouted himself.

The Mudokon was clad in a simple leather loincloth, his head capped with a single long feather. He was surrounded by large Spooceshrubs, relaxed with his eyes closed. More alarmingly, he was floating about three feet in the air, bobbing slightly as he sat on empty air. As Conar continued to look, he found that the guy looked unaware of his surroundings.

Living the Dream

When I was a kid, I frickin' loved Super Mario Bros. I loved it so much, I immediately came up with ways to improve it. I decided that one day, I was gonna create a Mario game with, like, all the stuff I wanted to see in a Mario game. Super Mario Bros. was just a computer program, after all, and I had burgeoning programming skills in BASIC and assembly. How hard could it be?! I began making drawings of the things I planned to include -- new power-ups, enemies, and characters. Some of them -- like a new power-up that would turn Mario into "'Lectric Mario", who can shoot sparks that are limited in flight distance compared to fireballs, but travel in a straight line and through solid obstacles -- I still think are cool. Others... not so much. For example there was going to be an enemy called "Mr. Dobalina". Yes, I named him after the title character from that Del Tha Funkee Homosapien song[0]. He was going to be a middle-aged man in a tacky beige suit[1], and he would chase Mario down attempting to sell him insurance. I think he would have worked a bit like the Super Mario World enemy Chargin' Chuck -- quick, aggressive pursuit pattern, takes a few stomps to defeat. Some of them were attempts to address what I felt were shortcomings with the original game. For example, one thing I really hated in Super Mario Bros. was pits, so I was going to give Mario the option to equip items, one of which was a grappling hook, so that if Mario fell into a pit he could perform a "last minute save" by deploying the hook, grappling onto the nearest ledge, and climbing the rope as he would a vine.

It's a dream I never entirely let go of. High school, then college, then life happened, and my Mario game took the shape of one thing or another all the while. Back-burnered but not really abandoned. During this time, I also grew up. I never lost my love for games and gaming, but I got different things out of a game as I grew older. One thing I realized was that a good game is not just a bag of mechanics and challenges. The very best games carefully choose these things and match them to one another. The pits in Super Mario Bros. are an integral part of the experience. Removing them, or even bestowing an optional easy out for them like the grappling hook, changes the game significantly. Changing anything about that game, no matter how small, changes the whole game -- for example, Super Mario Bros. puts the player in a unique relationship with power-ups that its successors never really replicated, wherein the fire flower is a reward for platforming skill that allows you to cheese through some of the more annoying obstacles like Hammer Bros. and even Bowser. But in order to keep it you had to remain unscathed for as long as you kept playing, else you would either die or become small and have to find the flower again. Bros. 3 and World, by contrast, almost always let you start a level with the power-up you needed to hand, either through the item menu or by visiting a previous level, topping up on power-ups, and exiting early. So simply by changing the available power-ups and how they are accessible, successors to Super Mario Bros. become fundamentally, substantively different in character.

The cool thing about all of them is not necessarily the power-ups, the levels, or the enemies. Those things are cool, but they're not the essential thing that makes these games awesome. The essence of Mario is in the adventure Mario embarks on, and the precision platforming necessary to succeed in that adventure -- negotiating obstacles and enemies quickly and almost pixel-accurately, with a simple but deep moveset.

In thinking about this I realized that the Mario game I dreamed of writing as a kid is coming to fruition now -- but it's not a Mario game at all. (That would create copyright problems, something 12-year-old me couldn't appreciate.) It's called NullAwesome and it stars a little rad green dude named Lorn Zender. But the way Lorn jumps -- that's a Mario jump. It even has jump aftertouch that feels about right. The way he moves, the level layout (such as it is so far) and how the elevators move -- those are all Mario-influenced elements. There are other inspirations as well, most notably Dangerous Dave -- written by a man who also just wanted to make a Mario game, John Romero[2] -- and OddWorld, and of course Watch_Dogs for the concept.

But yeah, this is basically the realization of a childhood dream for me, albeit taking a form I could never have anticipated. I'm pretty excited nevertheless. I just hope I can do kid-me proud.

I'm currently in the process of linking "things" together, so that hack targets can propagate state changes to objects they're linked to. This allows you to manipulate elevators and other moving obstacles by hacking their linked nodes. I'll check it in once it's in a working state. Stay tuned.

[0] And Del himself got the name from the late Peter Tork on the Monkees track "Zilch", in which all four Monkees rhythmically repeat random spoken phrases they heard somewhere before. Somewhere, the real Mr. Bob Dobalina, perhaps long dead by now, might've lamented his dubious immortalization.

[1] I thought it hilarious that in an era where video game enemies were mainly soldiers, thugs, mutants, or monsters, Bowser would recruit an ordinary, lame guy in a suit to go after Mario. My sense of humor at age 12 was... weird.

[2] John Romero and John Carmack actually did successfully begin a port of Super Mario Bros. 3 for the PC -- only to be turned down by Nintendo. They used the engine for the unfinished game to create the critically acclaimed Commander Keen series and bootstrapped Id Software in the process.
