OKAY SO HERE'S THE OVERVIEW:

marie and callie swap, classic. marie still wins the final fest but she's the one who gets kidnapped and hypnoshaded

flora and bola swap. for those who i havent brainrotted about these guys at, flora is my agent 4 and bola is his roomie/squadmate/platonic bestie/whatever who's unassociated with the NSS. the swap in this context means that bola becomes agent 4 and flora is unassociated with the NSS

in my normal canon, flora goes along with marie bc he's hard of hearing so he literally doesn't hear her "rescue my cousin from the octarians" explanation, but he's willing to go with the flow when someone hands him a military-grade weapon

bola, on the other hand, is a lot less compliant. callie actually seeks them out, since her approach is to recruit the scariest person she can find rather than recruit the first person she finds.

bola is also less willing to "go with the flow." they dont agree out of the goodness of their heart, they make a deal: they'll help callie with this if callie agrees to help them out after (their goal being to fuck with squidforce as much as physically possible)

also in my canon marie and callie are field agents while agent 3 stays at the back and gives commands, so callie and bola go through the kettles as a two-person team

while bola is an octoling, they're not an octarian, and they react very badly when callie is like "man you sure must be glad you deserted these guys they suck"

cue callie having to beg bola to come back when they storm off for like 4 days

over the course of the campaign, they have to learn to work together and cooperate and shit, and callie is kinda forced to examine the biases she inherited from capn cuttlefish because she's working with an octoling and they're nothing like she expected

this continues post-campaign where bola cashes in their side of the deal and gets callie to help cause problems for squidforce. this means even more self-reflection for callie since now she's hanging with the Leftovers Squad (bola, flora, CB-808 and bubbles (my agent 8s)) and they're so different from what she's used to

especially since CB and bubbles are actually octarian, now that i think abt it. huh. oh and also cause theyre close with marina

meanwhile, marie is feeling abandoned/betrayed, since from her POV callie has ditched her for a group of people that marie absolutely does Not get along with or fit in with

marie does not get along with bola at all. i love bola but God they're such a bitch. callie gets along with them because she was forced to get along with them by circumstance and has spent a lot of time with them, marie has not and so marie feels like she's been abandoned for someone who hates her guts

bola doesnt even hate her they just dont care. they hate agent three though. fuck that guy

the distance between callie and marie grows and grows until the breaking point; when CB and bubbles get all their mem cakes back and are like "hey why did you cause a famine" and callie is like "we did What" and they all confront three who reveals they knew that their actions in splat1 caused a famine but didn't tell either of the others

callie quits the NSS along with bola (the eights were never really in it to begin with, since they met cuttlefish + 3 after pearl and marina in the metro) but marie, who feels like she's already lost callie and not wanting to lose anymore family, refuses to quit

callie can't really forgive that because holy shit we caused a famine how can you just ignore that so then they sort of become estranged! this is usually the bit where pops yells at me /silly

the squid sisters disband, and callie makes a new moniker! "odd1out" cause it's a combination of agent 1 and the leftovers

welcome! this is an askblog for the "leftover's squad" a band/gang/inksports team of growing notoriety in inkopolis city, run by @sick-ada

the ocs featured are CB-808, she/her & Bubbles, he/him (both are agent 8, the purple and pink octolings in the banner) as well as Bola (they/them and agent 4) & Flora (he/she interchangeably, not an agent) who are the black octoling and yellow inkling in the banner

timeline-wise, this askblog takes place a couple months after octo expansion, which itself finished about a month after the splatoon 2 hero mode. CB and Bubbles have moved in with the other two and have settled in fairly well

(to anyone familiar with my ocs, this is following the odd1out au since it's a lot more interesting. this means that bola is agent 4 instead of flora, marie got brainwashed instead of callie, and other consequences thereof)

if you want a specific character to answer your question, specify in the ask, otherwise i'll just pick whichever character will have the most interesting answer. questions that the characters wouldnt be able to answer (e.g., questions about CB and Bubbles' past that they don't remember, design choices, etc.) i'll answer on my main blog

OK SO IM GONNA SPLIT THIS INTO LIKE. PER EACH IDOL GROUP BC I LIKE TO ORGANISE THIS STUFF. warning this is long

the squisters:

proto is basically the third squid sister, even if they don't perform. they do a lot of the management, the advertising, organise stuff, the works. they do less of it after splat1 as they all start to drift apart, but they like the squid sisters in the "we are literal sisters" sense rather than just the music sense

as musicians, flora and bola don't really like them. they represent the tastes of wider inkadia and the more well-off parts of inkopolis, which is not at all what flora and bola are about. as people... it depends. in the canon where flora is agent 4, she's kind of indifferent to them. marie hands him a military grade gun and he didn't have hearing aids at the time so she just decided "yeah okay i'll start doing violence, whatever" and doesn't really care about saving callie or whatever. literally does not find out about it until later, when he finds out the hero headset work as hearing aids. bola doesn't trust them at all, but they're more focused on openly antagonising proto than on agents 1 and 2. HOWEVER.... there is also an au i wanna do more stuff for, called the odd1out au, where marie/callie swap and so do flora/bola. bola and callie work together to rescue marie, but it's less of a "you gave me a gun so sure i'll shoot people whatever" situation and more of an exchange: bola helps callie do this and she has to help them take down/generally harass Squidforce. bola's very abrasive as opposed to flora being very accepting and uncaring as agent 4, so they kinda force callie to grow and recognise a lot of the biases she's been carrying from craig (e.g., callie assumes bola is an octarian bc they're an octoling, makes a comment along the lines of oh aren't you glad you deserted them, and bola refuses to come back and help until callie comes and apologises (they also punch her in the face for that)). so in that au, callie kinda grows on bola and therefore flora too, once she comes to hang out with them to help w the squidforce stuff. marie is... rockier. after getting rescued, she's pretty bitter that callie is spending more time with someone she perceives as an octarian, the group that fucked her over, than with her own cousin. this is amplified when the eights join the leftovers, cause then she's hanging with Actual Octarian Soldiers, and bubbles being a sniper/scout means that marie has no place in the group. basically bc callie grew while marie didn't they grow apart and the leftovers don't really like her, and fully resent her once it comes out what proto and the squisters did in splat1 and she sides with proto over callie.

uh anyway i got carried away there. CB and bubbles' opinions change as they get more of their mem cakes, as they dont get them all the first time around and have to go back later for them. before, they're like "theyre famous ig? idk im trying to Survive here" but after they're like Oh Those Guys Caused A Large Amount Of Our Problems since they were directly responsible for causing the famine + desertion that was a catalyst to bubbles' parents abandoning him and CB getting Unethical Scienced on to make her a supersoldier. theres a reason they fight Inner Agents 1 & 2 rather than Inner Agent 3 and it's not just that proto is a weak ass fighter

pluto gives not a single shit. none. not one. levi (lil buddy, Leviathan's Flight Over Verdant Pastures, horrorboros, i need to mention them more) likes the squid sister's music well enough. would listen to it on the radio but wouldn't put on a playlist of it. doesnt really care about the people either

Off The Hook:

proto hadn't heard of them before octo expansion, and honestly doesn't super like either of them? they make a bad first impression on CB & bubbles, and therefore a bad impression on OTH, since the eights have the radio before meeting 3 and craig in this au. they never really recover from it bc theyre kinda rude in general and dont make a massive effort to redeem themselves to OTH. indifferent towards their music.

flora and bola absolutely idolise OTH, since they run the announcements for the underground inksports scene rather than the official squidforce stuff (big inspiration from @worldsewage's stuff), which is what the two of them frequent. they like OTH for the same reasons they dislike the squisters; they represent the same parts and aspects of inkopolis culture that the leftovers do. they get closer with OTH thanks to the connection through CB and bubbles post-OE, and are even trusted to run the announcements for OTH while they're on tour! fun fact: off the hook concerts are probably one of the main contributors to flora's deafness. guy who did not wear hearing protection to the concert of "woman who destroys shit with her voice" and suffers the consequences

CB & bubbles are super close with OTH, since they're the first people they met other than each other after waking up without any memories. marina was also the first person to speak to them in octarian, which was the only language they could understand at first. they care for each other and they're great friends, CB and bubbles don't help the other leftovers with covering the announcements bc they go on tour with OTH, and even perform with them a couple times!

pluto has never heard of them and neither has levi. rip!

deep cut:

proto doesn't like them bc they're getting in the way of the NSS' goals in alterna. theres not really any redemption at the end, cause deep cut don't decide marie should be their boss in my au, they instead decide to side with pluto who also doesn't really give a shit about the NSS. doesnt listen to their music

the leftovers squad all likes their music, but flora and bola do like to play up the whole splatsville vs inkopolis thing whenever they're brought up since they're loyal to inkopolis. all in good fun tho. maybe if they get famous enough theyll do a collab w deep cut or smth i need to figure out where to put them in my lore. CB and bubbles never meet them i dont think

pluto likes their music, levi LOVES it. in alterna, though, theyre all "i want the treasure and will absolutely fight you for it" rather than fanboying (fangirling? fansalmoning?) over them. meeting them more as equals since they're both splatsland bandits trying to make a living. they do a lot of teamups post-alterna, though more in the banditry sense than the music sense. levi absolutely gets all of their autographs

OK IT'S NO LONGER 2 AM

so context for anyone out of the loop: proto is my captain 3, is more of a strategist and planner, doesn't actually go out and complete the kettles in splat1 (agents 1 and 2 do that). they fully believe what they've been taught by cuttlefish, that there's no hope for peace with the octarians, that they're a danger to inkopolis, and is willing to go to (and has gone to) extreme lengths to protect the city. this is more out of love for cuttlefish and the desire to make him proud than love for the city or its inhabitants

bola, my sometimes-agent-4 (i need a better way to phrase that), is a young punk whose goal is to take down (or, failing that, cause as much loss and damage to) squidforce, the company who runs the "official" inksports scene. if asked, they would say their motivations are entirely selfish, as squidforce shut down a lot of the smaller, unofficial inksports league, so now the only large one left is the underground one run by pearl and marina. however, they've been living in the city for a long time and care a lot about it. they don't want things to return to how they used to be, but they want this new status quo gone at all costs.

they absolutely despise each other.

it's one of those situations where they're so similar that they begin hating each other. both of them are smart, orchestrating and organising plans to further their goals, though bola is the only one of the two who executes the plan themselves too (the only one capable, after octo expansion). but their goals are so different, their ideals oppose each other so heavily, that both of them see the other as "myself if i was an idiot fighting for the wrong things"

speaking of their goals, they are effectively opposite of one another, even if they dont directly intefere with one another. squidforce can be taken down while the octarians are prevented from attacking the surface, after all. but while bola is fighting to undermine the status quo, proto is fighting to maintain it. bola saw their world as it was before squidforce took over, saw how much better it was, but fights for a new, better future as opposed to trying futilely to return things to how they were. proto never knew the world before the octarians were forced to live in the domes, and blindly trusts the word of another that it was worse, that anything done to fix it will ruin the new, better world, so they fight to keep things as they are.

(i think it's a nice contrast, considering how each of splatoon's main villains are trying to return the world to a previous state that they believe was better. proto, who should be heroic and good as agent 3, the captain, is closer to the villains than they are to being a hero)

they do have similarities though. the lengths they're willing to go to are extreme, and they have no objections to hurting others if they think it's necessary to their goal. the difference lies in the fact that bola will do what is necessary, while proto will do whatever is most effective. bola will spend years convincing the wider inkopolis populace that squidforce is corrupt, sowing seeds of doubt, because they know that just destroying the company will lead to another taking its place, and that having one single target to villify and blame will let squidforce appear as the victim in the public's eye, making their position even stronger and doing the exact opposite of their goal. meanwhile proto chooses whatever they think is the quickest, most effective way to achieve their goal, even if slower methods would be more effective, methods that go against their nature (as i'm sure sitting and plotting rather than taking direct action and fighting goes against bola) would be better for more people in the long run. proto never considers trying to find peace with the octarians, or helping them so that they have no need to take resources from inkopolis. they determine that the most effective way to eliminate the octarian threat is to make them incapable of presenting a threat. only the great zapfish was stolen in splatoon 1 (in this universe, but idk if they ever explicitly say all the zapfish you find are stolen from the inklings ingame), all the other zapfish taken were a deliberate choice by proto. performing the calamari inkantation in the final battle, where all the most elite soldiers were, wasn't to motivate themselves, callie or marie. they may not have known of the origins of the inkantation, but they still used it as a weapon to reduce the number of soldiers in the army (it wasn't so they could see the surface, seek a better life. it was only ever to further the goal). they stole the zapfish to starve them of resources, to force them to focus efforts inwards or starve, rather than outwards to take the surface.

(and it doesn't even work! for all of proto's plans and schemes and surety of purpose, they don't understand that people wronged are people angry, and that their actions cemented the population's support of octavio's desire to take the surface by force, inducing even more militarisation. they fall for the exact thing that bola knew to avoid)

even before bola knows what proto has done, they hate each other. when bola is agent 4, they joined as a bargain with callie, saving her cousin in exchange for help taking down squidforce. they have no loyalty to the squidbeak splatoon, they don't care what its goal is, and doesn't listen to a single order cuttlefish or proto might give. bola sees the orders as presumptuous and proto sees the refusal to comply as disloyalty. they don't meet well either, proto assuming that since bola is an octoling that they're a defected octarian (they weren't even born in the octaria/inkadia region, and they've been faced with the assumption for as long as they've lived in inkopolis) and bola deciding they hate proto on sight for it. it's not like that's unforgivable, callie makes the same assumption and she wins back bola's loyalty, but callie makes an effort to change and learn while proto is steadfast in the belief that they're right, their beliefs are right, and any offence bola might take is stupid because, in their mind, is a reasonable assumption to make. proto is pretty sheltered, so doesn't encounter non-octarian octolings in their daily life.

later, after it's revealed what proto has done (and that they hid the consequences from callie and marie after learning from the eights & marina that they caused a famine and mass militarisation), they hate each other even more. bola hates them more for what they've done, for all the harm they've done to their now-friends CB and Bubbles (CB would've never gone through her treatment, screamed herself so hoarse she's permanently mute, if the events of splat1 had played out differently). they hate that they unwittingly followed in proto's footsteps, they hate that proto lied to callie (who has grown close to the leftovers squad by this point in the timeline), they hate proto for still not caring about the people who died, only caring about the reactions of their close friends.

proto hates bola more after the reveal as well. they blame bola for turning callie against them, since they grew closer when saving marie and working against squidforce, forcing callie to reevaluate a lot of things and grow as a person. callie is disgusted when it's revealed what proto does so she leaves the splatoon while marie stays (not because she isn't disgusted, but because she thinks she's already lost callie, and can't lose the only family she has left). they tell proto exactly what they think of them, most of which proto refuses to examine because they're right they've always been right and there's no point thinking about the points of someone who was always going to be a traitor anyway (and who spread their ideals to proto's family, stealing them away, no that isn't stupid and wrong to think and no they're not going to examine that either).

it's not so strong in the universe where flora is agent 4 and bola isn't, since bola only knows proto second-hand, but they still hate each other on principle. mostly for the same reasons, but without the "you stole callie from me" stuff on top

i dont really know how to conclude this. oops i made agent 3 a character whose main purpose is to hate and be hated and serve the very principles they claim to stand against
