I feel like we don't often enough acknowledge that words are symbolic, rather than direct, and that the idea that others are similar to us is largely an illusion. Not a single word we say is 100% what the other person hears. We grew up in different locations, with different friends, different teachers... the image and memories that come to mind when I say anything are fully different than everyone else's. I think we deal with this by projecting our experience into the gaps. If we had to ask for clarification on every word, communication would take too long, so making assumptions about the unimportant details speeds stuff along. And this creates problems. It's the source of miscommunication. I had someone disagree with me on this idea, and by asking about specific definitions, we discovered that the word "information" meant something subtly different to them than it did to me, and that subtle difference changed the whole meaning of what I said to them. If you're not aware how often you're projecting your experience into the gaps left by language, you risk building the false idea that everyone is more like you than they actually are, and when you think they're using the same logic paths you're using, but they're coming to a different conclusion, you can easily end up incorrectly believing that they're not following rational logic paths at all. So here's my rule: Everyone is acting rationally all the time. no exceptions. And coming to agreements is just a matter of identifying which of our word meanings don't align.

Pac: [Stands where Bad was planning to place the mine again]

Bad: Stop it! Ok. Don't touch it, it's right–

Pac: [Blows up] AAAA!

Bad: Yes, I literally did! I said "Don't step on the mine! Don't step."

Baghera: Oh, I'm sorry, oh ok, I didn't understand, clearly.

Bad: Let's try again, one more time. Ok: that is a mine, don't' step on it.

Baghera: This one, right? [She steps on it]

Bad: WHAT THE FUDGE! It literally was there for 2 seconds!

Pac: [Cracking up]

Baghera: No, it was to be sure!

Bad: How about this– I'll put the mines later, you guys just assist–

Baghera: No, to be honest, I promise I stop now. I swear. I swear.

Pac: Yeah, me also. I swear.

Bad: ...Ok, let's try one right here. And so what we're going to do is we're going to put–

Baghera: [Tortured whining] I want to go, I want to burn! I want to go!
