A Comparative Analysis of Hook’s Ship and Cabin in Popular Media Portrayals
Part 4: Peter Pan (2003)
P.J. Hogan’s 2003 film is full of life and color, and Isaacs’ Hook is likewise a colorful character who, though grounded in reality, most definitely has a flair for the dramatic and a taste for the finer things in life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like the other Hooks we have seen thus far, Isaacs’ Jolly Roger appears to be the large stereotypical pirate ship that all children think of, despite the impracticality of a slower vessel in actual piracy. (By this point, I think we should just assume that all Hooks go for form over function when it comes to their choice of ship.) It’s a gorgeous ship, and I do wish we got more close-ups of the outside of this particular Roger so we could see more of what’s going on with all the decorative work on the outside of the cabin and the figurehead, etc. One thing, though, that stands out about this ship is that the mainsail itself has a giant skull and crossed swords on it. This would be completely impractical for any actual ship, as the enemy would see them coming and know they were pirates right off the bat…lending credence to the idea that this ship (and this Hook) may be deeply shaped by the children’s imagination. Then again…what else should we expect of a pirate ship whose name itself is the Jolly Roger?
The shots we get of the inside of Isaacs Hook’s cabin reveal the living space of a man who is accustomed to a decadent lifestyle but not so over-the-top as to be entirely unrealistic. While his beautifully decorated harpsichord is the centerpiece of the room, we also notice that he has several tables, a couch, and a globe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is about all we can tell from the in-film shots of the cabin, but some promotional material and a pirate-themed hotel that purchased a few set pieces from the film and set up their own room to mimic Hook’s can give us a few ideas about what the rest of the cabin might look like. (Big shout-out to @annabellioncourt for providing several of these bonus material images!)
Tumblr media
In the one promotional photo, there is what looks like a lute, perhaps, in the background. I also love the little detail of the skull and crossbones on the candle stand…and his li’l stripey socks.
Here we can see the full-sized bed with a gun and what looks like it might be an Eton crest over it. (Note that if you pay close attention in Hook’s intro scene in the film, you will actually see that the tattoo on his left arm is an Eton crest as well.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isaacs Hook also has a self-portrait in his cabin, it seems…which interestingly has a date on the frame of 1742. This is about the most specific we get with ANY Hook as far as time period goes. This is after the Golden Age of Piracy had really already come to an end, though it’s technically possible he might still have been “Blackbeard’s bosun” depending on his age, as Blackbeard’s career ended in 1718 in a battle off Ocracoke Island, NC. Isaacs himself was around 40 years old when the filming was done, so if we want to assume Hook was around the same age when he came to Neverland and the portrait was done shortly before then, he would have been around 16 at the time of Blackbeard’s downfall. A bit young but…it’s possible if he started his career at sea early. Cabin boys usually started out around age 12 but could be as young as 8-ish on occasion. However…this wouldn’t really track with Hook being an Eton student. Assuming he actually graduated, he would have been at the school until he turned 18. So while Isaacs Hook may have very well been a sailor or even more specially a pirate prior to Neverland…he likely wasn’t a peer of Blackbeard or the other more well-known pirates of the early 1700s.
Tumblr media
One last thing that is interesting to me is that in addition to the more standard weapons/tools like chains, guns, and boarding axes that we see in some shots, this version of Hook keeps what looks like an entire small cabinet of various tinctures and powders. At least the one of them which he removes is poison, but one wonders….are they all different kinds of poison? Or are some, perhaps, medicinal in nature or for recreational use?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a whole, Isaacs’ Hook is, I think, perhaps one of the most realistic portrayals of the character. While there are some highly fanciful aspects to his ship—like the giant skull on the mainsail—much of his personal space has the lavish furnishings one might expect of someone with an aristocratic background without feeling too entirely impractical. Add to that a concrete date on the portrait, and Id say this Hook is more grounded in reality than nearly any of the others we’ve encountered so far.

ok the whole theory that historical blackbeard's influence is what had stede bonnet's execution delayed something like 12x until blackbeard himself was hanged, after which the timing lines up for word to have reached Charleston, SC from Ocracoke, NC (almost 500mi apart) for Stede's sentence to be carried out - right? we're all familiar?
that really planted the image of stede being taken out of a cell, to his certain death, knowing it's because Ed is gone.

Are there any locations you would recommend I add to my travel bucket list if I’m interested in pirate history??
Hard to say when there's so many locations worldwide without narrowing it down. If we're talking the US, the east coast is really where most of that history occurred. From bottom to the top, I'd recommend - St. Augustine FL (for the Pirates and Treasure Musuem), - Savannah GA for The Pirates House, - Charleston SC for Charles Towne Landing, White Point Gardens, and the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon - Southport NC for their Maritime Museum on the Cape Fear River - Bath NC for Blackbeard stuff and to visit Edward Salter's Grave (the only buried pirate in North America you can visit) - Beaufort NC, for their Maritime Museum on the QAR - Ocracoke NC, for a Blackbeard location - Cape Hatteras, NC, for the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum - Jamestown VA, some of the founding members sailed with Francis Drake - Hampton, VA for the Hampton History Museum - Colonial Williamsburg, VA for the Old Gaol were pirates were held - Newport RI for various pirate stuffs - Lynn, MA for Dungeon rock where according folklore a pirate was trapped inside and died. - Yarmouth, MA for the Whydah Shipwreck Museum for Sam Bellamy artifacts.
There are of course small tiny areas that are of interest for various reasons, but feel free to ask and enquire about any of them, happy to answer! :)

Unable to sleep, Joel and I get out of the warm tent and decide to wander the darkness. On our way down the creepy boardwalk, we tepidly dodge blades of grass, having been traumatized from the earlier tick running up my leg. We make our way to the beach and it is empty, dark, and ominous but lit by a full starry sky. We chat and stargaze.
Poor Dylan is fully sick now and can't be getting the best sleep. He borrows one of Joel's eye masks. Allen is also not 100% and craves the AC of the van and hotel. The day's low is 28C. The tent is warm and uncomfortable.
In the morning, Joel and I awaken by the light and sneak out of the tent again, letting the others continue sleeping. We walk to the ocean more and wade into the water. After some convincing, Joel joins me in jumping into the ocean and we enjoy the renvigoration of the waves that remind us of West Edmonton Mall Water Park. The beach is beautiful and empty of the off road trucks that saturated it the day prior.
Assembling ourselves, we mosie to the ferry terminal to Ocracoke Island. We scrounge for coffee, which Joel finds via a vending machine, and meander the nearby shops. We talk relationships on the ferry while dodging sea spit and watch the seagulls ride the air flow above the ferry. Allen zonks out and snoozes in the van. The group decides they don't really want to camp another day in the incessant heat, and Joel books a spur of the moment hotel in Jacksonville, NC.
Orcacoke is an interesting island. All the locals drive golf carts around which we evny in the hot sun. Most buildings are on stilts or owned by rental companies. Seeking food, we stop at Smacnallys for fish sandwiches and plates of shrimp. We do a bit of shopping in the sunny heat and Joel is unfortunately scammed a tip at a local ice cream shop. Joel gives them a calm but firm piece of his mind, and after 15 minutrs of walking, we see a $1.30 reimbursement show up on his email.
After checking out the local lghthouse, we retreat into the van. Dylan, Joel, and I are sunburnt. The group starts to slow down. Waiting around the next ferry terminal, we explore the local fauna and restrooms. Joel entertains me with facts on the meaning of the word "Horizontal and puns like "Imma lichen this bench". Dylan becomes addicted to trader Joe's Licorice.
Arriving back at the mainland, the sun is setting. Our GPS starts going wonky so we have to disconnect and Joel navigates verbally. The surfboard on top of the Jeep in front of us almost flies off and someone is lighting off fireworks near the glass station. We are eager to get to our hotel, but still are over an hour away.
Picking up aloe vera at a massive Walmart, Dylan and Allen are pretty much spent. The mood is low but functional, and we are forced to the drive through of a Wendy's once we realize their doors are not open. Watching cockroaches outside, the staff inform us they are out of chicken and we pivot to beef. Allen is zonked and sleeping again (Sleepytime Tylenol coming in clutch) and the rest of us swap work stories having perked up with food.
The hotel is cheap but cool ❄️. Joel, Blake, and I inspect what appears to be pubes on a bedroom door. I discover that I have left my stinky shoes in my suitcase the entire day seasoning in the hot van, and my clothes smell like ass. Blake and Joel sip beers. Time for bed.

so if javid denkins is to be believed (and I cannot stress enough that I don't believe that account is really manned by david and I never have, call me a skeptic, but I'm suspending disbelief for now) and their newest puzzle likely pointing to North Carolina as the answer, AND we have confirmation that Hornigold has been cast for s2, I am :) Very Very Afraid :))))) For Blackbeard :))))))))))))
For those who may not be familiar, Ocracoke, NC was real life Blackbeard's fav place to hang out with real life Stede Bonnet and allegedly would throw absolutely buckwild pirate parties there. It is also famously the location where he was shot 5 times, stabbed 25 times, and BEHEADED in his final battle against the royal navy, and while real life blackbeard was a terrible person and had a fate to match, my boy ed? eddie my love? edward "most beautiful man alive" teach played by mister waititi with the big brown doe eyes and perfect tummy? he doesn't deserve that and i WILL be chaining myself to the hood of david's car if he tries to pull any funny business regarding this matter

Do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?
I love research. Absolutely love it. My search history is such a mixed bag.
I would say the fic I've done the most research for was Something Old, Something New. It was for @thebasementspouses Villain of the Month Bingo for January 2024 for Nick Fowler.
I researched the charming vacation spot of Ocracoke, NC. I'd been there before but I looked up hotels, beach rental locations, local eateries and shops, times/days of store openings and availability. This story is probably also my longest one-shot of about 9.5k.
If I could post my fics on my fridge, I totally would. And this one would be up there with my Deadpool magnet shining brightly lol.
Thank you for the ask, this was a nice stroll down memory lane.

Ocracoke to Hattaras Island
Monday, March 11, 2024
We slept late and had a leisurely breakfast. We found an open restaurant with a GF menu and got delicious takeout for lunch. We overhear people at the restaurant talking that the ferry from the mainland was cancelled due to wind. We only have 2 hour drive to out next campsite and 1 hour of that ride is another ferry, so we saunter up the island to the Hatarras ferry.
There is a lot of flooding on the side of the road.
Tumblr media
As we approach the narrow causeway we signs of a breakthrough of the ocean. The body-sized beige sandbags on the ocean side of the road are broken and the sand is spread across the road. There is a temporary "High Water" sign.
Tumblr media
Then we see the front end loaders and earthmovers ahead of us. There are portable traffic lights that clearly get a lot of use controlling alternating use of one open lane while the heavy equipment clears the other lane.
Tumblr media
We arrive at the ferry and are #2 in line. The 1:30 ferry doesn't show. The next ferry isn't until 3:30, but we hear that the ferries haven't been running all day but maybe the 3:30 will, so we decide to wait. A large line builds up behind us after word gets out that the 2:00 left Hatteras heading our way.
Tumblr media
But there is no traffic getting off the ferry, so we play ball with Dora in the middle of NC Rt 12. Why not?
Tumblr media
You can see where fairly recent storms took out the previous ferry landing.
Tumblr media
The 3:30 ferry arrived.
Tumblr media
We make it on the ferry which makes a very circuitous route between and around the sand bars. This used to be a much shorter trip. The ferry engine has a 1 second cavitation rock plus the heavy waves from the still high wind. Jeanne -- who normally has good sea legs -- is starting to feel nauseous by the time we get to land. This section of the Outer Banks is connected to the mainland by bridges, so there are many more stores and gas stations. We buy groceries, fill the fuel tank, and head for the next National Seashore campground.
Tumblr media
We check out the historic lighthouse on our way out of town toward the campground.
Tumblr media
Tim has a multi hour zoom call. It was a nice evening, but a long time to sit outside in the wind.
