So Celestia started her own Buckball Team for her School for Gifted Unicorns. So Twilight got Ponyville’s (and the entire Sport’s) greatest Buckball players to teach her School of Friendship in two weeks. Twilight also asks Rainbow Dash to help with the Cheer Squad but Rainbow Dash doesn’t really get what the Cheer Squad do. And the rest of the episode is her unenthusiastically trying to help the Cheer Squad.

Let’s start off with one thing people seem to misremember: Rainbow Dash teaches Fluttershy how to do a good cheer. And what does Rainbow Dash teach Fluttershy that makes her a good cheerer? Being loud. And that’s it. She wasn’t teaching Fluttershy to be a cheerleader, she was teaching her how to be a good audience member. Because cheering with a bunch of people you don’t know is a totally different experience than cheering with a routine.

With a crowd, you just have to hope for the best that they’re as much into it as you are. If you want to do a wave, you better hope the others are willing to participate. If you want to sing along with a wrestler’s theme song, you better hope the others are willing to participate. If you want to do a highly choreographed dance routine, being loud is not going to help you. All Dash knows about cheering is that the audience cheers when she does something awesome. Not that Cheerleaders help make said audience more interested.

And still, all the blame for this episode is on Rainbow Dash when Twilight Sparkle should get equal or more blame into this. She knew Dash doesn’t get Cheer Squad. She knew this was going to teach Dash a lesson. So she purposely set this entire thing up so Rainbow Dash can learn a lesson. Well, here’s some news people may not really grasp: if you put people who don’t have a passion or knowledge in a field, you’re not going to get good results.

A perfect example is Foodfight: the horrible CGI movie. There’s a story in this documentary about how a lady was assigned Lady X because she’s a girl and knows makeup. She doesn’t. She was hired to do texture work. Also doesn’t help that she was also doing things like making backgrounds and animation and storyboards. And look how well that movie turned out considering I’m pretty sure the rest of the animation team probably had similar stories. Or worse ones considering one of the stories.

Point is, if you hire someone who doesn’t have the passion for it or doesn’t know what they’re doing, this is just going to be painful for everyone involved. So let’s try positives: Snips being an Assistant Coach to try to push Buckball sales in Ponyville is a fun idea. So he has a strong investment in them doing well since if nobody is excited about the games nobody would buy the souvenirs.

Lighthoof and Shimmy Shake are fun new additions since they’re really into cheering. And they’re not total jerks about it like other fictional cheerleaders. Also, I can’t help but think of Round Trip’s joke with them. Yona is great since she’s a powerhouse who wants to make a pyramid and Ocellus is there because she wants to stand out, above the crowd, even if she has to shout out loud, except she shouts as loud as Fluttershy.

And then Smolder being in this team willingly is a nice treat. She pretends she isn’t interested but whenever Dash doesn’t her true feelings show up. And it's Smolder who finally pushes Dash to really put 120% into teaching the Cheer Squad. So while Dash is shown at her worst, Smolder is shown at her best. And the story ends with the Cheer Squad doing well and Dash realizing this was a lesson.

Again, a terrible episode because you’re seeing poor kids being dragged into a lesson to teach Rainbow Dash “you don't have to care about a thing other ponies like as long as you care about the ponies who like it”. A good lesson for accepting people liking things you don't, not a good lesson about forcing people to do things they’re not supposed to do. You can care for the people who like things you don’t. That doesn’t mean you should be forced to do a job you don’t care about. Or in this case, in charge of something you’re not passionate about. That’s how we got Foodfight. 

You want a good version of this episode that teaches this lesson? WordGirl: El Queso Mysterioso. WordGirl is dragged along to a Magic Convention while Dr. Two-Brains is dragged along to do the Henchmen’s Crimes since its Henchmen Appreciation Day. But he is slowly won over because they’re enjoying it so much he’s enjoying this, which gets WordGirl to start enjoying the Magic Convention instead of accidentally ruining it for people. No need to remind people about abusive teachers like when this first came out.

Or I can just tell you the cliff notes version: the rewrite focuses more on the Cheer Squad trying to do things on their own before asking Dash to help, who does so because she thinks they’ll ask AJ since she’s better at cheering. The daughter of Vinyl Scratch and Octavia. A soft spoken and humble mare, it's amazing to see the switch in personality when she gets on stage and proudly shows her skills. Her special talent is Swing Music and she plays the Double Bass.

Crimson Cut-

The child of Rarity and Fluttershy. A confident and proud pony who seems spoiled at first but is actually very kind. Their special talent is grooming pets and dressing up the pets is thier favorite part of the job.

Chaotic Charm-

The daughter of ponyville's strangest couple, Discord and Tree Hugger. A sweet yet sassy creature, she's a famous stress management therapist known to be able to "eat the stress itself" or so she claims. No one knows if she's joking or not.

Smokey Mirror-

Son of Starlight Glimmer and Trixie Lulamoon. He's a kind stallion with a monotone voice. He's a magician specializing in illusions but lately he wants to learn more advanced magic.

Apple Dusk-

Daughter of Rainbow Dash and Applejack. A very laid back mare but is also a hard and strong worker. She loves making apple crisps for her friends and talking with her cousin, Sweet Ambrosia. Can be a bit blunt and dense to other's affections at times.

Crystalline-

The happy-go-lucky genderfluid kip of Smolder and Ocellus. They're always bright and cheery but know when to reign it in when things are serious. Is actually known to be quite posessive and scary if their friends. Enjoys baking with Apple Dusk.

The Night Watch

‘ring! ring! ring!’ Made a distant noise in the closeted office. Ocellus rolled her chair up to the desk, which held the phone and answer machine, clearly emitting the sound. She reached out her hoof to press the red button(the one you answer with), but as soon as she did, there came a sound of hurried footsteps through the hallway on her right. 

“F-Foxy,” she jumped, quickly moving to close the door. When she pressed he button, a large thud was heard soon after. “Huh?” 

“Hello- uh, hello, hello!” That voice seemed strangely familiar, so, Ocellus took a deep breath and decided to brace herself. 

The door bolted upward, and before Ocellus could thoroughly scan who it was, something rushed toward her. “Woah,” she exclaimed, moving out of the way. 

“Watch your left.” The Phone Dragon, Smolder, came in with an office chair that slid all the way to the other side of the room. Once she made it, she quickly pressed the other door’s toggle button, making sure to close out one of the other animatronics. Ocellus retaliated by fanning herself with a hoof, her face turning slightly red. “You know, you’re lucky I care about you, or else I’d stop trying to help you every night.” 

Ocellus chuckled nervously, tugging at her collar. “Y-You, uh... s-said that three nights ago.” 

“Eyes on the camera!” Smolder hissed, pointing a claw at the bug-guard. 

“Y-Yes ma’am, sorry ma’am!” Ocellus made a point of holding the camera against her muzzle and trying to ‘fully immerse herself’, but then, lowered it a little to ask a question. “Wait, didn’t you die before?”

Anyway, here's my next gen kids for the Young Six plus three random creatures that are part of this friend group. I decided to put them together in one big group picture instead of making individual refs for them. Shoreline Daughter of Sandbar and Yona, Shoreline is an even blend of her two parents. She shares her dad's easygoing nature and also shares her mother's strength and has great pride in her pony and yak heritage. Her special talent is building sandcastles. Ladybird Daughter of Smolder and Ocellus, Ladybird is a very excitable hybrid who's always open to make new friends. She loves to laugh and cause a little mischief, but it's all in goof fun. Bright Star Daughter of Star Tracker and Mina, Bright Star is a big geek who loves all things nerdy. She often writes fanfics about her favorite media and draws her own comics in her free time. Periwinkle Son of Gallus and Silverstream, Periwinkle is a very agile flyer in the sky and a swift swimmer in water. He's a big fan of the Wonderbolts and dreams of becoming the first non-pony creature to be accepted into the team. Saul Adopted son of Holiday and Lofty, Saul is an abbysinian who is very stylish and always loves to look his best. He also cares very deeply for others and how they're feeling. How have you been? Is everything okay? You do matter. Let’s go grab lunch sometime. Crimson Blossom One of the many non-pony students at the School Of Friendship, Crimson Blossom is a very friendly and soft-spoken kirin. He's close friends with Saul and secretly has a crush on his brother Daylight Flight.
