#Repost @orcaprojectoz Probable new species of Orca discovered! --- During our voyage researching Type D killer whales, we were lucky to spend time among a group of about 30 whales, which approached the vessel many times. When we towed the hydrophone behind the boat to record Type D calls, whales immediately came over to inspect it!!! . From wide-angle cameras mounted on the hydrophone, we obtained revealing underwater images as the curious whales showed details of their unique colour patterning and body shape. Here is this revealing footage of the inquisitive Type D Subantarctic killer whales! 💦 Genetic samples our team collected will help determine whether this animal, with its distinctly different colour pattern and body shape, is indeed new to science. 💦 “We are very excited about the genetic analyses to come. Type D killer whales could be the largest undescribed animal left on the planet and a clear indication of how little we know about life in our oceans,” said Bob Pitman, a researcher from NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California. 💦 This Type D killer whale imagery captured serves as a reminder of how little we know about life in our oceans. In the next few months, the DNA samples should finally reveal just how different the Type D is from other killer whales. 💦 A huge thank you goes out to our collaborators & the incredible research team that made all this happen: Bob Pitman, NOAA; Lisa Ballance, NOAA and Scripps; Bec Wellard @becandthesea , Project ORCA; John Totterdell, CETREC WA Cetrec WA, Jared Towers @jtcoastal , Bay Cetology Jared Towers; Mariano Sironi, @icb.argentina Instituto de Conservacion de Ballenas, Ocean Expeditions @oceanexpeditions , and Cookson Adventures @cooksonadventures @its_me_henrycookson. Maxwell Bay: Once aboard the Hans Hansson, we were shown our cabins before gathering for a safety briefing followed by lunch. Soon I heard the magical sound of the engine starting to churn... and metal clang of the anchor being raised, so I headed up to the bridge. We were cruising out of Maxwell Bay with the 75 foot (23 meter) S/V Australis not far behind us. Over the radio, our skipper and the Australis' chatted about weather and ice conditions. The Australis would be setting a course for the Antarctic Sound to the south and we would be heading west to Fort Point on Greenwich Island (one of the South Shetland Islands). Here's a view from just outside the bridge of the Hans Hansson as we parted ways with the Australis. #🇦🇶 #Antarctica #HansHansson #OceanExpeditions #Latergram #bonvoyage via Instagram http://ift.tt/2mGInIl

Taking a step back in time to this moment and reflecting about my journey and life...............nothing ever comes easily in life and is never a given. If you have a dream and want something bad enough then go for it and never look back. If you love someone then tell them today. If you have a relationship which deserves an apology then make one and forgive one another and move forward with love and understanding. If you have a dream then take the ride and buy the ticket. Be passionate, work hard and live life like there is no tomorrow. When I’m older in life sitting on the porch I want to look back on my life w/ no regrets and every destination or adventure attained. Once off the plane, all passengers were instructed to begin the walk to Maxwell Bay to board our vessels. This path would take us down the gravel airstrip, through the outskirts of the Chilean Base to the zodiacs. Our group was greeted by Juliette Hennequin & Dion Poncet (Hans Hansson's First Mate & Skipper)!Knew I was in for another excellent adventure after having such a phenomenal time with them in South Georgia! Bright white ice chunks littered the dark sand beach where the zodiacs landed. It was a busy place and I was happy to say a quick hello to Ben Wallis (@oceanexpeditions) skipper of the Australis, who was receiving his guests here, as well. Out in the misty bay were the three vessels awaiting passengers: #SeaAdventurer (117 pax), #Australis (7 pax) and #HansHansson (10 pax). #Antarctica #flythedrake #OceanExpeditions #QuarkExpeditions @quarkexpeditions via Instagram http://ift.tt/2mWzICg

#Repost from my great friend @maestro320 --- 🔵Maestro's Notes: This presentation courtesy of Our Friends in Ocean Exploration at OceanX @oceanx - Although millions of species are waiting to be discovered in the ocean, it’s widely accepted that there are not really any large mammals left to discover. Well, until now. There is only one known species of killer whale, divided into groups with vastly different behaviors and hunting strategies, called ecotypes. This expedition was filmed off Cape Horn, Chile by the team made up of International Scientists that included: Project Orca @orcaprojectoz Executive Director, Marine Zoologist and Cetacean Acoustic Specialist, Bec Wellard @becwellard Marine Scientist, Lisa Eisert Marine Biologist, Lisa Ballance @lisaballance04 Cetacean Researcher, Author and Skipper, Jared Towers @jtcoastal Ocean Expeditions @oceanexpeditions Adventurer, Traveller and Founder of Cookson Adventures @cooksonadventures , Henry Cookson @henrycookson_ Mariano Sironi @mariano_sironi Instituto Conservacion de Ballenas @icb.argentina and Oregon State University Professor and NOAA Researcher, Dr. Robert Pitman Type D was identified based on photographs of a 1955 mass stranding in New Zealand and six at-sea sightings since 2004. The first video record of this type in life happened between the Kerguelen and Crozet Islands in 2014. It is immediately recognizable by its extremely small white eye patch, narrower and shorter than usual dorsal fin, bulbous head (similar to a pilot whale), and smaller teeth. Its geographic range appears to be circumglobal in subantarctic waters between latitudes 40°Sand 60°S. And although nothing is known about the type D diet, it is suspected to include fish because groups have been photographed around longline vessels, where they reportedly prey on Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides). • For the original underwater footage courtesy of Bec Wellard @becwellard , please check out my previous post. Thank You. 🙏🙏🙏 https://www.instagram.com/p/CAXcQAHpyHB/?igshid=kj0gtmjs2uul
