When we towed the hydrophone behind the boat to record Type D calls, whales immediately came over to inspect it!!! . From wide-angle cameras mounted on the hydrophone, we obtained revealing underwater images as the curious whales showed details of their unique colour patterning and body shape. Here is this revealing footage of the inquisitive Type D Subantarctic killer whales! 💦 Genetic samples our team collected will help determine whether this animal, with its distinctly different colour pattern and body shape, is indeed new to science. 💦 “We are very excited about the genetic analyses to come. Vietnam OCIP

Writing this because it’s 2am and my flight is at 7 and we all know if I go to sleep now I will never wake up on time =P

Winter (lol winter in sg pls) hols have been pretty cool. Went to Vietnam for a good 10 days. The country and its people are amazing. We went to a province south of Ho Chi Minh City for an Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP). Honestly speaking, it was way easier than I expected. We had a proper motel with proper showers and food was aplenty. Compare this to my previous OCIP in Cambodia where we stayed at what essentially was a textile workshop where we slept on mattresses on the floor with mosquito nets. In the day, the women of the village would come over to work and sew clothes for the textile business they were running. The villagers were a generally friendly bunch and extremely hospitable. Many of the children could not speak much English if at all but they are able to write out sentences. In the first few days, communication was extremely difficult due to the language barrier but as you got to know the people you realize many of them are not speaking English due to the fear of getting it wrong. However, they were very enthusiastic about what we were teaching just that to took a day for them to warm up to us and us to them. The children were also extremely nice (one of them brought a soccer ball on the third day once I told them one of my hobbies was playing soccer which was so touching)The secondary school also held a campfire in gratitude and commemoration of our visit there and we all had tonnes of fun (especially Karl I'm sure eyyyy). A real campfire too like wow it was amazing. The countryside is also very serene and peaceful with paddy fields sprawled all over the area. The place reminded me a lot of Bangladesh though with a warmer climate and Buddhist influences. A lot less trucks and more bikes too! Food here is also amazing. We were served Vietnamese style cooked fish and chicken and served the freshest fruits you will taste. They gave us a huge tray full of jackfruits and honestly I could have finished the entire tray by myself it was that amazing. We also got sugarcane juice which was sweeter and more flavourful than any I could find in Singapore!

The last 3 days were RnR in Saigon. The city is your typical bustling South East Asian city (mind you Singapore is not a typical South East Asian city) with traffic zooming all around you even till 2/3 am. It’s almost like a less crowded, less busy version of Dhaka. Also, I learnt that the Vietnamese really love motorcycles like I swear I saw more motorbikes in an hour there than I have in my life. We went to a couple of places like the Mekong Delta which was pretty meh and the colonial Post Office. Quite a few of the buildings were designed during colonial times by the French so the architecture is different from the British ones what I’m used to seeing in Singapore and Bangladesh. 

One of the more memorable parts of the RnR was the war museum where there were relics such as the torture devices, guns and photographs of the Vietnam War. Interestingly, the war itself was called the American War in Vietnam (which makes sense since they saw America as the aggressor). The museum itself was amazing showing the Vietnamese perspective to the war instead of the American one we are so used to hearing. Completely changes your perspective because obviously if you hear American accounts of the war they would skip out many of the atrocities of it and sugarcoat a lot of parts. Like honestly most of what we read about the Vietnam war is about Americans being pissed at the war because their being drafted into it and their sons or brothers are dying completely ignoring the many sufferings and evils of what was going on in Vietnam itself to its own population. Things like the brutal killings of villagers, carpet bombings and the use of chemical warfare on the civilian population. It’s really saddening to see that so many had died and suffered in a war which was ultimately aggravated by foreign powers by nothing more than mere ideology and protection of their “interests” which the people on the ground in Vietnam had to suffer for and had no idea why there were even foreigners invading their land. 

Not to leave this post in a sad note, the rest of the few days we went around exploring the city for what it is and admire how well the country has recovered from a war that ravaged it merely 40 years prior.The city is now bustling with people from all walks of life running businesses, going to university, selling delicious street food and living their lives in general. There is a high octane atmosphere in the place with an incredibly vibrant nightlife scene with bars, clubs and cafes littered along the French-inspired boulevards. The best thing about Vietnam? Their coffee. Rich, aromatic and strong, their style of coffee brewing produces one of the best cups of cà phê I had the pleasure of having. Literally, every shop, even those that don't even specialize in coffee, have amazing tasting coffees on offer. Lest not forget the food too which is incredibly healthy consisting mainly of vegetables and noodles yet delightfully sumptuous. 

All in all a brilliant trip to remember and kickstart the winter holidays. Really miss the place and hope to be back to explore more of what the country has to offer. Will be off to Bangkok soon and hoping for another amazing and probably chiller experience to remember. For now here’s a picture of this amazing city:
