✹‒ sneak peek…THE LAST MESSENGER ( an original story concept )
word count: 950
warnings: slight spoilers ( but let’s face it, I’ll probs never finish this anyways lol); amateur writing
Ward began to stir, eyes fluttering open as he gained consciousness. His vision was blurred, so he could barely take his surroundings into account. All he could make out was that wherever he was, it was dimly lit and cold. How did he even get there? The young foot soldier struggled to recall the details.
He had been nearing the end of the second week of his first big mission alongside the legendary tracker, Margrave, and a swarm of other troops. That morning he swore he spotted a figure looming in the distance of The Veiled Forrest. He was quick to alert Margrave, who was, to no one’s surprise, quick to dismiss the rookie foot soldier. Ward was instructed to get some much-needed rest at his post, but the stubborn young man couldn’t bring himself to listen to his commander. No. He just had to seize the opportunity to prove himself. Sneaking off into a deeper part of the forest was the last thing he remembered.
With a sigh, Ward attempted to get up from the hard cold ground his face had been planted to for heavens knew how long. That was when he noticed his hands and feet had been bound together. “Bloody hell!” He cursed under his breath as he continued to struggle against his restraints.
“It’s no use.” A feminine voice said. “You’ll only hurt yourself if you keep writhing around like that.”
It was then that Ward realized he wasn’t alone. His frustration quickly morphed into something much more intense, fear.
“W-who are you?” He stammered out; eyes squinted as he did his best to spot her amongst his dark surroundings. “What do you want from me?” A playful laugh echoed around him. He couldn’t even tell which direction the voice was coming from, which only further fueled his shameful panic.
“Perhaps something? Or perhaps nothing?” The voice teasingly replied. After a short stint of silence, a hooded figure stepped forth from the shadows, candle in hand. “It is you that should answer to me, soldier.” They bitterly spat.
Ward didn’t dare reply as he kept his gaze locked on the looming figure in anticipation. His captor grew closer to finally reveal their face to him. The terrifying hooded figure that once stood before Ward revealed themselves to be a delicate looking maiden. He noted that she was quite tall, with long ravenous hair, olive colored skin, and eyes as dark as the night sky.
“You’re the one who brought me here?” Ward questioned in confusion. How could such a frail looking flower manage to do all of this to him? It just didn’t make sense…
“Obviously.” The maiden scoffed. “Now, enough questions. You do not get to try to hunt me like I’m some wild boar then question me!” She added. Then it all began to piece together for Ward. “You’re the messenger...” He thought aloud.
The maiden nodded. “Yes. And you’re one of Margrave’s ingrate soldiers after my demise.” She slipped through gritted teeth, before crouching down to his level. “Although, if an imbecile like you is the best Margrave can do then I suppose I have nothing to fear.” The messenger taunted.
Her long fingers reached to push back some of his unkempt hair from his face. Oddly enough, her chilling touch felt oddly soothing to Ward. Perhaps even familiar… “I’ll tell you what, I’ll spare you this once. However, you must do something for me in return, boy.”
Boy? he thought. “What do you want me to do?” Ward asked, his fear now shifting into curiosity. “I wish for you to warn Margrave that his hunt is futile. And then I want him to pass along the same message to that wretched regent.” The messenger instructed. Ward gulped. How was he to face the Margrave with such a message? Especially after directly disobeying his commands and getting kidnapped by the target.
“Even if I did give him your warning, it wouldn’t change anything.” If anything, the esteemed tracker would take the warning as motivation to prove her wrong. “It’s unlikely that a man of his caliber would listen to a mere foot soldier like me—.”
“It is in his best interest that he does.” The messenger interjected. “He cannot win this war he has proclaimed against The Conjurer. Attempting to do so would be suicide.”
“Suicide?” Ward repeated incredulously. “You don’t understand. The men you’ve spotted on this hunt are hardly half of the amount under his control.” The foot soldier attempted to explain. “Margrave’s got hundreds more—perhaps even thousands— under his control by decree of the Queen.”
“It is you who does not understand.” The messenger smirked. “You all may have the numbers, but numbers mean nothing when faced off against power. The Conjurer is unlike any other magic siphoner your kind have faced before.” She assured with what Ward assumed to be a gleam of pride. “There is a chance your lot might manage to maim The Conjurer if this war is seen through. However, countless lives will be lost in the process.”
Ward’s jaw dropped at the mere thought. Was it even possible for one man to hold such power? If that was the case, why hadn’t he intervened? Nothing was making sense. “That is under the assumption Margrave fails to have your head, no?” Ward inquired.
The messenger rolled her dark eyes. “That is under the assumption your leader is as wise as he claims to be, but let’s just say that my death would result in the annihilation of life as you know it. So, if Margrave values anything or anyone more than this hunt, he’ll call it off while he still can…”

✹‒ a peek into...THE LAST MESSENGER ( an original story concept )
❝ For centuries, the rare magic siphoners utilized malevolent familiars known as messengers to do their bidding. Messengers were blessed with the gift of immortality in return for their protection and loyalty. This gift was bestowed upon them when magic siphoners linked a part of their souls to them. Some were even said to be granted other abilities in addition to an extended life. Beloved pets were most widely chosen to be messengers. However, it has been discovered that Cosimo, otherwise known as The Conjurer, has the first ever known human messenger under his command. That is our key to his downfall. If you kill a messenger, you deplete a magic siphoner’s power. Successfully hunt the messenger and The Conjurer will finally fall... ❞
