Snippets: Midsummer Heat
Word Count: 234
Characters: Pigeonfur, Peakclaw
A warrior must patrol rain or shine. Though, Pigeonfur would prefer he didn’t have to.
—————
Pigeonfur hissed as loose pebbles dug into his paw pads. The blazing heat of the sun pressed against the dark fur of his back, and it was only determination keeping him moving.
In front of him, Peakclaw stride forward as if the mountain terrain was no different than the soft, mountain flower dappled hills of BoulderClan territory that he came from. If there was one thing Pigeonfur could give the other tom, it was that he could traverse these mountains like there was nothing to fear.
Irritably, he scuffed his paws to send a few pebbles off the path. They tumbled off the cliff, somewhere far unseen, and there wasn’t a noise in return; it had been swallowed by the howl of wind.
Pigeonfur slammed into Peakclaw’s hindquarters after the tom suddenly halted. He snarled. “Keep moving! I’m not looking to stand next to a cliff all day.”
Peakclaw whipped Pigeonfur upside the head with his tail. In retaliation, Pigeonfur snapped his teeth in the direction of the gray tail, catching a few hairs in between his fangs.
“Ugh!”  Peakclaw growled, pulling his tail away. “I stopped because there’s a fox den up ahead, but if you want to get ambushed by a fox, be my guest.”
“Lead with that next time then, badger-face.” Pigeonfur bristled with indignation.
“Use your nose next time then, dirt-breath,” Peakclaw spat back.
It would be a long patrol…

I have an OC with the name Ferretpelt but I'm unsure if that's too boring...Would there be a suffix that works better? He's a cat who dislikes being in leadership positions, is stern and loyal to his clan and leader more than anything and can become hostile if encountered less than kindly from other clans/rogues, etc.
Hello there, Mouse! There’s nothing boring at all about -pelt (or -fur), to my way of thinking. I could see him possibly being a candidate for -heart, if that unswerving loyalty is firmly tied in with his moral code, and that moral code is very important to him. But if he doesn’t quite seem like a like a -heart cat to you, then -pelt is a good fit. It works well for a cat who doesn’t fit any of the skill or personality prefixes. Plus, it adds some balance to the Clan’s suffixes – not everyone is going to deserve -claw, -nose, -tail, or the like. And that’s okay.
Honestly, I feel like it’s the character behind the name is what makes the name interesting and memorable, not necessarily the name itself. Just because he may not have any exceptional skills, and doesn’t fit the three personality suffixes, doesn’t mean he’s boring. I guess what I’m trying to get across to you is, if you feel like the name fits him, and you like the name, don’t worry about whether other people will think the name is boring. Just as an example, the warrior name of my main fanfic character, Pigeonstar (who is my avatar picture), was Pigeonfur.
Sorry for the rant. That was probably a longer answer than you expected, lol.

Character Highlights: Pigeonfur
One of the original Clan founders. Began as an apprentice under Cicadafur.
Pigeonpaw always felt overlooked and overshadowed by his peers. He was the runt of his litter and was born during newleaf when there was many kits in the nursery. It’s no surprise then that Pigeonpaw was left searching for a way to stand out (aside from being the smallest). However, he wasn’t as good at hunting as Beepaw, not as good a fighter as Heatherpaw, couldn’t run like Yewpaw, nor climb like Littlepaw. During assessments, his senses weren’t sharp like Petalpaw’s and his memory wasn’t as clear as Turtlepaw’s. It seemed that he was doomed to be just another set of claws in his Clan.
His training was almost over, and he still hadn’t found his niche when Brindlecloud approached him at a gathering. They told him that StarClan foretold something coming that would change life as all the Clans knew it. A new Clan, Brindlecloud said, a clan where community wasn’t based upon blood but merit and care. Brindlecloud wanted him to join this new Clan. At first, Pigeonpaw turned them down. How could he leave his Clan? His family? Especially at the word of a random warrior?
But the thought had become ingrained in his mind like a tick in fur. No matter what he did, it couldn’t be dislodged. So he met with Brindlecloud again and told them he had changed his mind and wanted to join. Partly because he wanted to, and partly because he felt honored that Brindlecloud had chosen him out of all cats. Surely the warrior had seen something in him that no other cat had seen before?
His new mentor was Cicadafur. They were… odd. He didn’t like talking to them much or any of the other cats. Especially fox-hearted Peakpaw who whined incessantly despite his innate talent for fighting and perfect mentor. That resentment for Peakclaw only grew as his feelings for Brindlecloud did. Brindlecloud had chosen him, selected him out of a group of eight apprentices, and yet chose Peakclaw of all cats over him?
He stayed bitter for his entire life. Despised his name, which denoted him as average for the rest of his life, and died of green cough at fifty-three moons after training one apprentice, Pricklefang. An average cat through and through.
He has one solace though. He doesn’t have to share an afterlife with Peakclaw and has stars in his fur. Strange how life turns out, isn’t it?
