Part 3: “Am I not as thoughtful as you thought I’d be” Rating: Mature Previous part Next part Pairings: Finan x OC, Uhtred x Gisela x OC

The nun who helped her through the birth, Hild she learned, tried a few times alongside the priest Beocca to try to get her to acknowledge the newborn. Hranni rebuffed them each time, and could not meet them in the eye for she felt so ashamed. She knew it was only a baby, but it was the son of a father who did unspeakable things and she could not bear the possibility of submitting some future other to that horror. It was better if the baby knew nothing of its parentage, including of her. She knew Christians often gave babies away to the church, and after her body pulled itself back together after the birth, had insisted the same be done when they reached Eoferwic. It seemed everyone else disagreed. Gisela was the only one who did not treat her like something about to break, and for that she was thankful for the lady’s companionship.

Hranni spent the time journeying to Eoferwic alone in a cart either fixing these thoughts in an endless pattern in her mind that felt like an open nerve anytime she wandered to thoughts of Katla, or sleeping dreamlessly. Beocca said it was to be expected after such an ordeal, as he so diplomatically put it. In one of her waking moments left alone from her usual visitors, Sihtric came to see her.

The weight that seemed to be ever present on his shoulders seemed lifted, riding a new horse and his weapons returned to him. He excitedly told her of how he is now sworn to Uhtred, and his new lord had also promised that Dunholm would soon be taken from Kjartan in the name of King Guthred.

“He now knows Katla is there unwillingly and promised she would be a widow before winter. He is an honorable lord. He’ll do well by us.” Sihtric insisted. She only nodded in reply. Uhtred seemed nice enough when he had come by the evening after the birth once the procession had started again. He asked her a few questions of her family, of Sihtric, and Katla. He did not push her about the babe or for details, only thanked her and left.

“If you believe he’s trustworthy, I’ll follow. I promise.” Hranni replied. Sihtric moved his horse closer to the cart and matched the pace enough to move his hand to her shoulder. She looked up at the mismatched eyes now so much brighter in the daylight and placed her own hand on top of his.

“Hranni, if you want I,” He paused, and she watched as his sharp jawline tensed a bit before relaxing again as he let out a sigh. “I’ll claim him. As my own. I told Uhtred already we were not together, but no one else.” His offer caused her to pull her hand back, around her middle, and he likewise pulled back at the first sign of her discomfort.

“I… Sihtric, that is very kind of you to offer. But it is not necessary. I will not speak of this again.” The words felt prickly in her mouth.

“I understand.” He said, and Hranni knew he did.

That night, they reached Eoferwic and she did not have a chance to talk with Sihtric again before Gisela brought her to a small room with the first real bed she had seen in nearly a year. “This is yours, while we’re here.” Gisela told her and was off again, leaving her truly alone for the first time in a long time. Hranni quickly checked that the door was well and truly closed, and felt a rush of joy at seeing the wooden beam serving as a lock on the inside of the door. She moved the beam down, and pushed and pulled at the door to ensure it could not budge an inch, and settled down to sleep.

The morning saw a whirlwind of activity she watched from the safety of a small window in her room. She noted the big gates she could see and how people walked freely in and out, and Hild had come by to take her to a nearby river for a wash. On their return, she saw Uhtred and Beocca coming to them. Beocca looked absolutely bothered, but Uhtred elbowed him lightly.

“Hild,” he nodded towards her, who also gained a decidedly annoyed look on her face, “Hranni, I’d like to talk with you again, in private if you don’t mind. Beocca and Hild can wait nearby.”

Hranni had little idea what more he had to say to her, but nodded in agreement despite the eye roll Hild gave him, who then wandered to Beocca. Uhtred gestured ahead of him, and Hranni followed his lead as the two walked a little ways away from the others.

“Gisela has been worried about you and your son,” He began, and she winced instinctively. Gods, what could he say to her he thought would work that the others had not already tried? “Sven and Sihtric may both be Kjartanson, but as I know the both of them now, that is where the likeness ends. Sons can take after their fathers-”

Hranni heard that familiar buzzing in her ears as her body focused into nothing but a font of anger. Before she knew what she was doing enough to stop herself, whipped a full-armed slap across the lord’s face. The hit took him hard, and both stood in stunned silence as Hranni covered her mouth with her hands in shock at just slapping the man who had promised her sister’s freedom. She heard a gasp from Hild off in the distance as the sound of the hit could surely be heard all the way back to Eoferwic. Before Uhtred could even react, Hranni walked as fast as she could back in the direction of the river as that was the only place she was sure she could be alone at this moment.

She did not hear anyone coming in her direction, and as the river came in sight she quickly plopped down onto an overturned log.

“Why! You idiot! Think then act, you idiot!” She muttered angrily into her own fists as she rocked back to stare up the blue sky, and tried to breathe even as she felt overwhelming shame again rear back up inside her. She spent long moments steadying her heartbeat as her pulse quickened to an almost painful level, and as she heard the buzzing give way to the gentle sounds of the river, she heard steps behind her. She turned, rubbing tears off her cheeks that she didn’t even feel fall, and saw Beocca coming towards her before he sat next to her. He said nothing for quite a while, but Hranni felt surprised at how she welcomed his presence.

After a while, once her breathing had returned and all the numbness of shame left her, he turned to face her.

"Tell me, what do you know about baptism?" He asked gently.

Her eyes narrowed as she struggled for the words to reach past her throat. She met his eyes for the first time then, jaw tensed. "It is what you do to babies, to bind them to your god after they are born." Hranni watched as Beocca wrung his hands together in his lap. What was he trying to convince her of?

"Yes, in a way. God accepts them, and cleanses them of all sin," He said as if she a child he were teaching. "All the evil that has touched them." He said the last words softly, voice lilting up in a way that reminded her of her own father when he was teaching Katla to walk. Guiding, there to catch you but intent on setting you on the right path. As quickly as the memory came, it was replaced in a breath with the image of him run through by Kjartan's sword.

"What of it?" She muttered, lowering her eyes again at the memory. If only she had not froze at the sight, if only Katla had decided to leave her, if only - she felt a hand gently tap her chin up to coax her back.

Blinking away at the onslaught, she again met Beocca's face as he searched her own.

"I tell this to you because I know you fear what your son could become. If you permit this, I will cleanse him of the evils that may be in him. He will be his own man, with your love to keep him on a good path."

Tears pricked her eyes. She opened her mouth to speak but her words failed, as they so often did as of late. A quiet whimper escaped her instead as his words tugged at that painful chill in her chest that had not left her since the boy's birth. He was a babe, and his cries that sounded so far away at his birth echoed now in her mind. Hranni wanted her mother desperately, she had promised she would be there to meet her first grandchild but the Norns must have laughed at her mother's promise.

"Fine." The word came out clear to her surprise. She swiped the tears that fell down her cheeks and swallowed down the ache in her throat. Her mother could not meet her grandson until he fell with a sword in his hand for she surely had done the same and was waiting for them in Valhalla. This is for her mother, wherever she is waiting for them.

The pair walked back to Eoferwic, and insisted she rest for a bit before they again returned to the river. Hild stood there waiting, the boy wrapped in a thick blanket in her arms and Gisela next to them. Hranni felt a smile twitch at the corner of her lips as Gisela held a hand out to her. She had been rooting her to the ground these last few days as everything else had spun out. She gently took her hand as the two moved closer to the water's edge to watch. "It will be alright, Hranni. I named him Randwulf, for the shield and the wolf. You are bound to us now, dear. As wolves protect their own pack, we’ll protect you, and as a fierce shield maiden, you’ll protect us.”

Hild passed the boy to Beocca, and Hranni ignored most of what he said because this was the first time she really looked at her son. The little thing had a hand wrapped around Beocca's thumb, the other waving idly from his blanket as he babbled. Beocca took him from the blanket and gently dipped him in the cool water, the boy uttering a small cry at the sudden chill as Beocca said something before being passed to Hild who quickly wrapped him back up.

"Is it done?" Hranni asked her. Hild nodded, and held Randwulf out to her. Hranni hesitated a moment, then took the little bundle in her arms for the first time since his birth four days prior. The weight of him felt awkward in her arms, but his bright little face smiled up at her. She felt as if he had not forgotten her, and seemed to find her absence these last few days of no consequence as he settled in her arms. Hranni traced his little face and smiled as he grabbed her finger, desperately trying to hold the digit still in his pudgy little hand.

"Would you like to join us for our meal, Hranni?" Gisela asked her as she too smiled at the little one.

"I think I’d like that . I suppose I must apologize to Uhtred. He was only trying to help."

"All of us told him not to dare try it. I don't think an apology is needed," Beocca said to the women. "But it was nice to see him make an effort."
