CHAPTER THREE
CHAPTER CW: Purposeful misgendering
Dahliapaw could tell Petuniapaw was hiding something.
Despite the twoâs punishment being over for about a moon now, he noticed that they were still leaving camp in the early hours, usually taking a piece of prey or small herb bundle with them. At first they lied and said they were heading to the dirtplace, but eventually they stopped telling the lie and just outright said nothing when they returned in the early hours.Â
Dahliapaw growled. Leaf-bare had begun just days prior, and according to Blossomstar, it was bound to be a harsh one. Snow was already beginning to cover the ground, and cats huddled in their dens at night to keep warm.
Once again Petuniapaw had left their nest and stalked out of camp, and this time, Dahliapaw followed.Â
He made sure to stay far enough behind for his scent to be faint, but close enough to see where his sibling was going. He kept his pawsteps light, trying to avoid the usually satisfying crunch of the snow beneath him.Â
The two walked for a while, and Dahliapaw could feel his paws beginning to grow sore. He didnât like walking much, and was relieved when Petuniapaw finally made it to their destination. He crouched behind a large rock, resting his front paws on his tail to avoid getting too cold. He was confused when Petuniapaw slipped into a makeshift bush den, and even more confused when he heard voices.
âThank you again for doing this, Petuniapaw.â The voice was gentle, a hint of a purr in the speaking catâs tone.
âItâs no problem, Amber.â Petuniapaw purred in reply. They could be heard settling down. âHow are the kits?â
Kits? Dahliapawâs fur bristled, and he held back a growl. Petuniapaw was helping outsiders! Surely this was against the rules!
âTheyâre fine, sleeping now,â Amber was saying. âItâs about time I gave them names. Would you like to name one, Petuniapaw?â
Dahliapaw heard Petuniapaw gasp. âWhat? Me? Are you sureâŚ?â
âIâm sure. Youâve helped me so much, without youâŚI think we wouldnât be here.â Amber chuckled. âGo on, name whichever one youâd like.â
âTheyâre both she-cats, correct?â
âMhm.â
âOkay,â There was a brief silence, and Dahliapaw assumed they were thinking. âI want to name the black one. MaybeâŚBriar? Her fur is all fluffy, and it looks kinda spikyâŚâ
âBriar is a good choice.â Amber said. âI suppose itâs my turn..Iâll name my other daughter Maple. Her colorsâŚThe name fits her.â
âBriar and MapleâŚThose are good names!â Petuniapaw laughed, and Dahliapawâs ears pinned against his head.
âThey are,â Amber murmured. âI hate to cut our meeting short, but I feel tiredâŚI donât want you to get caught out here. I think you should head home, for your own good.â
âOkayâŚBye, Amber. Bye, kits!â Petuniapaw could be heard standing.
âGoodbye, Petuniapaw.â
Dahliapaw watched as Petuniapaw exited Amberâs den, and when they started to walk home, he followed.
âŚ
âGreat StarClan, how much sleep did you two get?â
Dahliapaw sleepily blinked up at Hazelcrest as she spoke. It was the dawn patrol, and he had been sent along with Hazelcrest, Rosewing, Petuniapaw, Lilyeye, and Treewhisker to check the borders.Â
He hadnât slept much since returning home. He was too busy thinking about Amber, and how his own littermate was blatantly breaking the warrior code!Â
He didnât know what to do, who to tell.
Rosewing puffed out her chest at Hazelcrestâs comment. âTheyâre growing toms, they must need more rest than us warriors!â She purred.
Lilyeye scoffed. âPetuniapaw isnât a tom anymore, Rosewing.â
Dahliapaw could see Rosewingâs demeanor shift in an instant, and she gave Lilyeye a glare. âAre you claiming you know my kit better than I do?â
âAt this point, Rosewing, maybe I do.â
Rosewingâs claws unsheathed, and she growled, only to be interrupted by Treewhiskerâs voice.Â
âStop it, you two. Youâre acting like a couple of squabbling kits. Look, an EagleClan patrol.â The tomâs voice was soft, yet still stern as he gestured towards the border.Â
The group of cats stopped to speak with the three EagleClan cats, dipping their heads in greeting.Â
âYewsplash! Hello!â Lilyeye exclaimed, stepping forward to touch noses with the calico she-cat.Â
Yewsplash responded with a purr, nudging her friend. âGood morning, Lilyeye!â
âHowâs EagleClan?â Treewhisker asked, stepping forward.
The expressions of the EagleClan cats dropped, and they shuffled their paws awkwardly before one of the warriors, Tansystone, spoke.
âSo farâŚNot well.â He said quietly, his gaze fixed on the ground. âValleystarâs kits are sick with kittencough, and Iâm afraid Gorgefeather isnât doing too well either.â
âOh, so sorry to hear that.â Lilyeye murmured, a solemn look crossing her face. âI do hope they recover. If thereâs anything we can do, please let us know.â
âThank you. I knew we could rely on CraneClan.â Yewsplash smiled, before looking down at the smaller she-cat by her side. âOh! Mistpaw, would you like to say hello to the CraneClan cats?â
Mistpaw, who Dahliapaw noted to be only about seven moons old, shook her head.
âThatâs alright.â Yewsplash looked up at the CraneClan patrol. âI apologize, sheâs a bit shyâŚStill getting used to apprentice duties and all.â
âOh, we completely understand. Our apprentices arenât talkers either.â Treewhisker chuckled. âWell, we donât want to keep you long. Weâll be on our way now. Goodbye!â
âBye, now!â Tansystone meowed, and the two groups remarked their borders before parting ways.
âSounds like EagleClan is weak,â Dahliapaw said when they were far enough away. âWe should invade their camp! Take their herbs, their prey, their-â
âDonât be mouse-brained, Dahliapaw.â Lilyeye snapped.
Rosewing lashed her tail. âNever speak to my son that way again!â
Hazelcrest groaned. âSave it, both of you. Stars, my head hurtsâŚâ
The rest of the patrol was silent, with many unspoken words lingering in the chilly air.

BloodClan - Moon 0
All the Heads of Houses go out on patrol with the other member of their House.
Rowanfur and Podmeadow of HouseFlame go on patrol near the Thunderpath and overhear a kittypet crying out for his Twolegs to come back. Here, they find Fruittuft.
It seems that his Twolegs dumped him because he's sick with yellowcough. Rowanfur and Podmeadow bring him back to camp, and, while Podmeadow helps him get settled in the medicine cat den, Rowanfur immediately goes to Mumblestar to campaign for Fruittuft to be given his own House. His intentions are selfish, to say the least; he believes Fruittuft will feel indebted to him and his wife, so if Fruittuft gets his own House, House Flame will essentially have two votes at Council meetings.
Mumblestar, however, says no decision will be made until Fruittuft recovers. The subtext is clear: she doesn't necessarily believe he will.
Meanwhile, Egretdapple of House Gold takes his daughter (and apprentice), Dahliapaw, on a hunting patrol. She sees a rabbit across the border in BugClan's territory and doesn't hesitate to pounce...only to come face to face with a BugClan warrior. Egretdapple does nothing to help as the two briefly tussle, and although Dahliapaw is able to flee back across the border, her tail is mangled in the fight, landing her in the medicine cat den.

Yarrowpaw (Tabii)- Yarrowleaf
Asterpaw (Erin)-Â Asterpool
Dahliapaw (Ainsley)- Dahliapetal

CHAPTER ONE
CW: PARENTAL VERBAL ABUSE, CHILD NEGLECT(?)
âYâknow, we could really get in trouble for this.â
Dahliapaw looked back at his littermate. Petuniapaw stood behind him, their tail trailing behind their body.
He couldnât help but scoff. âWeâre eight moons old, Petunia! I know the territory like the back of my paw by now! In fact, when we get back, Blossomstar will wanna make me a warrior!â
âMm,â Petuniapaw shook their head. âI think youâre being mouse-brained.â
âAnd went youâre following me around like a lost kit!â Dahliapaw grinned, continuing to pad along the river. A feeling of triumph could be felt as he heard Petuniapawâs resigned sigh and pawsteps behind him.Â
The air around the apprentices carried an earthy, slightly musky scent that filled Dahliapawâs nostrils and made him wrinkle his nose. Even as a kit he despised the water. He always envied how the other clans had gorgeous forest territories, while CraneClan was stuck with the rivers and fish. How he longed to climb trees, to catch miceâŚ
Itâs alright, He thought to himself. One day Iâll be Dahliastar, and Iâll take over the clans! All of the forests and trees will be mine!
âDahliapaw?â
Dahliapaw snapped out of his thoughts with a brisk shake of his head, turning to Petuniapaw. They were staring forward, eyes wide.
âWhat? What are you looking at?â Dahliapaw huffed, mildly annoyed that his stream of thoughts had been ruined.
âWhoâŚWho is that?â
Intrigued, Dahliapaw followed Petuniapawâs gaze.Â
His sibling was looking at a young she-cat, who seemed to be searching for something along the edge of the river. Her fur was brown, with mottled markings. Her chest, belly, paws, and tail-tip were white, and her eyes were yellow.
Growling, Dahliapaw stalked forward, lashing his tail. âHey! Who are you!? This is CraneClan territory!â He hissed.
The she-cat looked up, eyes widened. She began to take slow pawsteps backwards, trembling, her ears flattened.
âIâm sorry! I was justâŚâ
âLeave now, or else!â Dahliapaw hissed, and the she-cat scrambled away.
Petuniapaw shuffled over to their brother, looking up with a saddened expression. âDahliapaw, she seemed harmlessâŚYou scared her!â
âUgh, you shouldâve become a medicine cat instead of Orchidpaw!â Dahliapaw groaned, glaring down at Petuniapaw with an irritated twitch of his whiskers. âWe didnât know who that was! She wasnât a clan cat, she couldâve been plotting an attack! You never know!â
Lifting his nose in the air, the cream tom turned and started to make his way back to CraneClanâs camp. âNow, I canât wait to tell our mentors and Blossomstar about how I chased off a rogue all by myself! Theyâre gonna be so proud!â
âŚ
Blossomstar glared down at Dahliapaw from the TallHill, the tip of her tail lashing in irritation.Â
âLet me get this straight, Dahliapaw,â The she-cat meowed. âNot only did you and your sibling leave camp without warning, but you also chased off and scared a cat without asking what her business was in the territory?â
Dahliapaw frowned, lowering his head. Shame burned through his pelt.Â
âYes,â He mumbled after a pause, looking back up at the calico she-cat. âBut Blossomstar, I thought-â
âDahliapaw, I appreciate that you were trying to help the clan.â Blossomstar interrupted. âBut what you did was dangerous, and you dragged your sibling into it! What if this rogueâŚIf they were even a rogue at all, which I doubtâŚWas part of a group? You two couldâve been ambushed! Torn to pieces! And none of us would know what happened!â
âBlossomstar, if I may,â Rosewing, mother of Dahliapaw and Petuniapaw, stepped forward from the small group of gathered cats. âDahliapaw was just doing what he thought was right!â
âDid I not mention that already?â
âOf course, you did, butâŚHeâs just an apprentice! He barely knows any better!â Rosewing insisted, sitting beside her son and curling a tail around him protectively.Â
Petuniapaw scooted away. Dahliapaw shot Rosewing a grateful glance before turning back to the leader.
Blossomstar sighed heavily, shaking her head. âGreat StarClanâŚâ She murmured, before looking into Rosewingâs eyes.
âRosewing, Iâm going to say this as gently as possible.â She began. âHe wonât be young forever!â
âBut-â
âNo âbutsâ. Youâve tried to pull this trick ever since he was in the nursery. âOh, Blossomstar! Heâs just a kit!â, âHe doesnât know any better!â...Itâs infuriating, to say the least.â Blossomstar rolled her eyes. âAt this rate, youâre not doing anything but raising a spoiled, entitled cat who runs to mommy for protection whenever he does something wrong!â
Dahliapaw glared up at Blossomstar. He could feel Rosewingâs fur burning with either embarrassment or rageâŚPossibly both. He felt just as angry. How dare Blossomstar speak to his mother that way!
Her tail curled more around the apprenticeâs body, and she let out a huff. âItâs not my fault you clearly have a preference for Orchidpaw and Petuniapaw!â She exclaimed.
âAnd itâs not my fault you have a preference against them.â Blossomstar meowed, a cold sadness in her tone as she stood. âThis clan meeting is dismissed. Because they both left camp without permission, Petuniapaw and Dahliapaw will both be the first picks in dawn patrols for the next quarter moon. That is all.â
Cats began to disperse, and Dahliapaw watched as Rosewing turned her attention to Petuniapaw, giving the young cat a glare that made them shrink down to the ground in fear.
âYou!â She hissed. âWhy didnât you stop Dahliapaw if you knew he was doing something wrong!? You couldâve prevented this!â
âIâŚâ Petuniapaw looked at Dahliapaw, silently pleading for help.Â
Dahliapaw looked away.
âWell? Hurry up and answer, mouse-brain!â Rosewing snapped, making Petuniapaw flinch.
âI tried, butâŚHe didnât listen to meâŚIâm sorry, mama, Iâm sorry-â
âEnough! Because of you, Dahliapaw is in trouble!â Rosewing turned away, her gaze softening as she padded over to Dahliapaw. She sat down, purring as she began to groom his fur. âYou poor thing, youâre all fluffed upâŚMy babyâŚâ
Dahliapaw tried to ignore it, but he could feel Petuniapawâs eyes glaring at him from their spot. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see them pick themself up from the ground and slink away, towards their father Owlspring.
A little voice deep inside of him told him to follow his littermate.
He didnât listen, and instead leaned deeper into Rosewingâs warmth.
