Let’s Talk About More Burned Characters
Because I really don’t know how to stop myself, I’ve put together some information about the supporting cast for Burned. These characters may not get as much page time, but I still LOVE THEM ALL and would like to briefly talk about them!
Neil’s Children;
These three characters are already a pretty tight friend group when Neil meets them on his first day of classes. He’s significantly older than them, a result of his late surge. Regardless, they immediately take a liking to him, and in almost no time he considers them his LITERAL CHILDREN. They tend to follow in his footsteps and pay attention to what he’s doing; when Neil upsets the social order, it inspires them to stop following the status quo. A strange occurrence leaves Neil feeling particularly protective, but he wonders if it’s too late to really protect them.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Neil’s Outer Circle;
All three of these characters are incredibly skilled Psychs who go out of their way to make Neil feel welcome at Harmonium. Dani is involved in the first display of Psych abilities that forces Neil to accept the reality of his situation, Lyla treats Neil like any other incoming Psych, and Jasper eventually becomes Neil’s teacher and something of an older friend and guide (even despite the tension born from their mutual interest in Alex).
~*~*~*~*~*~
Some “Adults”;
Neil learns fairly early on that the “authority” figures at Harmonium are still basically children themselves; a lot of Psychs never fully mature due to the responsibilities placed on them so young. While Jayce does try to help Neil and is initially the only other person who knows about the amnesia, it becomes clear that there’s some favoritism toward Neil due to Jayce’s past proximity to Neil’s mother. Celeste was known for sparking debate in the Psych community due to her brash and often impulsive style of leadership, but her death (as well as Claire Destella’s) has nonetheless sent a shock through the system. Ben Zhao steps in to take her position as the only surviving member of the mission that took the women’s lives, but Neil wonders if he has any idea what he’s doing. Neil gets the impression that this older generation may be hiding something. Something big.

Character Profile: Jayce Malveaux [The Psych Quartet]
Guide • 28 • Gemini • ENTJ • Light {newly-appointed headmaster//well-meaning but sort of bumbling//definitely hiding something//obsessed with coffee//fun bc French accent} [Character Tag]
As the newly appointed headmaster of Harmonium, Jayce is Neil's only touchstone to his past. He helps integrate Neil into his new life, but Neil gets the feeling that Jayce is hiding something important. Confident and intimidating but ultimately friendly, Jayce does his best to fill the shoes of the headmaster who came before him while attempting to usher the community of Harmonium out of a period of mourning and into the new opportunities presented even in the wake of tragedy. Jayce tends to be a bit hot and cold and can switch hats and moods with the snap of his fingers. Under his subtle but charismatic exterior, all he desires is to make Psych society a better place.
While he’s on the green side, Jayce is determined to step into the role of Harmonium Headmaster after the sudden passing of the previous holder of the position, Claire Destella. He has the credentials and experience despite his youth, and as one of the only living Light Psychs, he’s uniquely qualified to lead. His identity sits on the line between Bases and Elementals, a fact he could use to bridge the gap.
Jayce is the first person Neil meets when he wakes up at Harmonium. He eases Neil into his existence as a superhuman and tries to help him make sense of the recent tragic events. As it turns out, Jayce was a close mentee of Celeste Reignier, Neil’s deceased mother. He feels a particular affinity for Neil and from the beginning, pushes him to strive for greatness.
“You were never built for bare minimum. Excellence is in your blood. On the one hand, that’s a lot of pressure, yes. But on the other, it makes you want it. It makes you want to run, to reach, to grasp your fate in your hands. It makes some things easier, and it makes you work much harder for others. Either way, you’re already learning though, aren’t you? You were never destined to be some torch, Neil.” Jayce flashes his teeth, eye alight. “No. You will be the sun.”
Though he’s well meaning, Neil comes to suspect that Jayce is in over his head as the leader of Harmonium. There are several occasions in which Jayce’s favoritism toward Neil is shown, and nothing drives Neil crazier. He also discovers that Jayce is withholding information which could potentially send the Psych community into chaos.
Not only that, but Neil learns early on that Jayce has become Clark’s legal guardian in the absence of his parents. His background is a mystery that Neil unintentionally unwinds bit by bit, regularly stumbling into new information that makes him question Jayce’s authenticity. Every meeting in the coffee-soaked aroma of Jayce’s office leaves Neil feeling more confused and frustrated, and he wonders when Jayce will surrender his ego and lay out all of his cards. It might be the difference between Neil rekindling his past or losing eighteen years of his life altogether.
Jayce knocks his desk twice and presses his lips together. “Is there something personal going on between you two?”
Neil’s cheeks flush hot. “Not anymore.”
“I see. As I’m sure you can imagine, my job doesn’t entail knowing the intimate details of every romantic endeavor on this campus, so you’ll have to forgive me for putting you in that position. I’m not sure what happened to his teammates, but Clark will be dealt with. I promise.”
An overheard conversation alerts Neil that Jayce would much rather have Celeste’s old position as Elite Commander; while he’s allegedly doing his best, Jayce makes several grave missteps in his first term as headmaster. As a result, the social order sidles up to the edge of a knife and threatens to tip altogether.
