This is Halloween - WIP Preview, Chapters 1 -5
Since these are still works-in-progress, it is likely that the following excerpts will change between now and the final draft! Please keep that in mind while reading.
Chapter 1: An Upcoming Celebration
Lilia: Mm-hm. Halloween—
Emery: Halloween is a holiday that falls on the last day of October — the thirty-first. Every year, ghosts that have passed through the veil are able to return to the land of the living. Not just ghosts that linger, either. All of them.
Lilia: …
Emery: What?
Lilia: I wasn’t expecting you to be so knowledgeable about it.
Emery: I… (She blushes a little bit, chuckling nervously.) Halloween is my favorite holiday out of the year. It’s the one night that I felt like I could enjoy myself without any issue and I could just… be me, you know? (There might be more behind it, but whatever it is, Emery can’t remember. What she can recall, though, is a really happy and warm feeling associated with it that just gets her so excited and hyped up. Lilia chuckles, a bit amused.) A-Aside from all that, the living set up decorations to welcome the ghosts. We also dress up in costumes!
Grim: What? Why?
Gus: Not every ghost is polite and courteous like us.
Grace: You say that, but I remember being told how you three frightened our poor Ramshackle students when they first arrived. (The ghosts yelp as Grace hovers behind them, floating back away from her like she’s on fire.) I think they know by now how ghosts can be.
Emery: Hey, Ms. Grace. (Grace sighs.)
Grace: Trust me when I say that their pranks are a good idea of what will likely happen. Tying shoelaces together, swapping the salt and sugar in the kitchen… messing with your closest, drying out all the pens… Believe me, I can speak from experience.
Grim: Huh?
Grace: I grew up in a very… haunted mansion.
Emery/Grim: What?!
Grace: I’d rather not talk about it.
Chapter 2: Decorative Displays
Deuce: How did you get the librarian to let you use the library for your venue? I thought that she would’ve—
Idia: It was pretty easy. Ortho asked, and she said yes almost immediately.
Deuce/Jack: Huh?!
Jack: It’s that simple?! I thought that… She seems so protective of the place, so… Really?
Cater: Nah, Ms. H is crazy about Halloween. I think the only one who might beat her in terms of hype is Emmy.
Emery: Wait, seriously? (Cater nods.)
Crowley: She’s always been like that, from the moment that she started working here. Halloween has always… lifted her spirits, so to speak. If any student were to ask to use the library, Grace usually says ‘yes’ in a heartbeat under one condition. She gets to be involved. One year, Octavinelle did a truly spectacular display that turned the library into a token haunted mansion with a seance table to boot. (Oh, wow… Emery can practically picture that in her mind. It sounded amazing.)
Vil: “So that’s why you went with the library… you knew it would be easy.”
Idia: Would’ve been easy either way… the library was just the best place to set it all up…
Vil: Excuse me?
Chapter 3: The Week Begins
Jamil: You’re scaring her, Floyd.
Ace: No kidding. I’d be scared too if someone twice my size was looming over me like that. (Emery hums in agreement.)
Floyd: Aw, really? (He crouches down to the girl’s height.) Hey, sorry, little minnow. You gotta watch where you're going or you could hurt yourself.
Little Girl: I’m sorry. I just… I couldn’t find… (Jamil crouches down next to her as well.)
Jamil: Couldn’t find what?
Ace: Get separated from your mom? (The girl shakes her head.)
Little Girl: Mommy stayed home. (She holds up one of the stamp cards that were a part of the event. It’s been filled out.) I’m looking for the place you’re supposed to go when you’re done collecting stamps. I’m supposed to meet my daddy there.
Floyd: Easy enough. C'mon, kiddo. I'll walk you there. (He takes the little girl’s hand and leads her to the front gate with the rest of the group following him. Ace nudges Emery as they linger back behind the others.)
Ace: You okay? Your enthusiasm is just gone.
Emery: I um… remembered something.
Ace: So it’s not just your dreams anymore?
Emery: I guess. It wasn’t as strong as my dreams, but it was something. …I nearly remembered my mom. I heard her voice, and then snapped out of it before I could see her face. (Ace nudges her.)
Ace: You’ll be fine. It’s Halloween, so stop moping. Who knows? Maybe your mom’s here.
Emery: You think so?
Ace: Lots of people come here, so maybe. (Emery hums. Her mother’s voice did sound a bit familiar… like she had heard it recently. She wasn’t sure where from, though. Maybe when watching a movie with Ace and Deuce? Or from one of the portraits? Or her mind is playing tricks on her or something, she had no idea. She sighs, shaking her head. She could deal with this later, after Halloween was over.)
Chapter 4: Like Dark Clouds
Vil: As much as I enjoy seeing you, you’re blocking the entrance.
Astor: Sorry, Vil. (It seems Vil’s return causes quite the stir as soon as Astor says his name.)
Man A: V-Vil Schoenheit?!
Woman B:  No way! The celebrity model himself?! (Oops. But still, Vil puts on a smile and shows it to them.)
Vil: Happy Halloween, everyone. I hope our festivities are to your liking.
Woman C: Oh yeah, I did hear Vil went to school at Night Raven College. And I get to meet him in person! I lucked out big time!
Man A:  Hey, could I take a picture with—ah, whoops, no photography in the Mirror Chamber.
Woman B:  Even if there was, supermodels like Vil don't let your average Jill waltz up for a selfie.
Vil: If you’d like a picture, then by all means. (This catches the man and woman off guard.) Not in the Mirror Chamber, of course. We can take one outside. Shall we? It’s dark, so watch your step. (They leave.)
Trey: Have a lot of people shown up just for Vil?
Astor: Not a whole lot, but still a good few of them. Vil’s more approachable than he looks, and plenty of his fans are finding that out when they come by to visit. I think he’s also been distracting people when they ask for a picture with just me.
Trey: Huh?
Astor: Don’t look at me, I don’t know why either. Dad doesn’t want pictures of me alone to go viral, so Vil’s been stepping in to make sure that doesn’t happen. Instead of a picture with me, it’s with the both of us. It’s better that way, I guess.
Trey: That makes sense. I think. (He’s not even old enough to have a Magicam account of his own yet, and the only reason he has a phone at all is for emergencies or to contact his father.
Chapter 5: Magicam Monsters
Grace: This has gone off the rails… Dire, please help and do something!
Crowley: Why me?!
Grace: You’re the headmaster!
Crowley: Um… well, uhh… (He glances back at the students and clears his throat.) Everyone, settle down! And uh… you tree-climbers! Get down from there this instant! Otherwise… (He’s floundering.) Otherwise, the school’s security system will identify you as a threat and expel you from our campus!
Emery: Do we even have a security system? (Lilia shrugs. Emery supposed they didn’t, because otherwise Grim wouldn’t be able to sneak back in on that first night…)
Crowley: After I saw the Halloween crowds, I took the initiative of installing one in case of bad actors. (Grace raises a brow, but says nothing. Crowley clears his throat again.) The system activates as soon as it spots exceedingly dangerous activities. Yes, safety measures are firmly in place!
Man A:  Night Raven College has a security system? Siiick!
Man B:  And it sounds like a real fancy one. NICE.
Woman C:  So whatever we do is cool as long as we don't get kicked out? Sweet. Let's see how far we can push it!
Crowley: Ah…
Grace: (in a low tone of voice) You were bluffing about the security system, weren’t you?
Crowley: Not so loud! (whispering so that only the students can hear them.) Do you really think a security system so convenient actually exists?! Of course I made it up! Nobody could’ve predicted this happening! (Emery glances over at Cater, recalling his strange behavior over the past few days. Had he seen this coming and kept it to himself in order not to ruin the holiday?) I thought that it would be enough!
Grace: Well it wasn’t. What do you suggest we do to get rid of these… these monsters?! (Emery hears Lilia chuckle.)
Lilia: I have an idea… (He curls a hand around Emery’s shoulder.) Distract those Magicam Monsters and Professor Trein.
Cater: What’s with the look, Lils?
Emery: I’m kind of confused, too.
Lilia: While our dear magpie— (Magpie?) —keeps them busy, we’ll use our magic to eject those monsters from the campus.
Cater: Lilia—
Malleus: Simple and to the point. I like it. Blowing them off of the campus should be easier than spinning thread.
Lilia: Hold on. If you don’t restrain yourself, you’ll blow the campus away with them. Don’t harm them, just… be discreet and get them out the gate. (Emery glances back at the tree.)
Vil: (sigh)
Emery: I’ll do it.

Halloween is Emery's favorite holiday. Upon discovering the grand festivities that Night Raven College puts on each year for both the living and non-living, she couldn't be more excited to spend the day at the school with her friends. With the fancy costumes, elaborate decorations and treats, it is set to be quite the memorable Halloween with everyone lending their aid. However, the campus is opened to guests for the week of Halloween. As it turns out, a few of those guests have less respect for not only Night Raven College but its own students as well. Terror looms on the horizon, and not in the way that Emery wants. Can Night Raven's students keep their beloved holiday from turning into a total nightmare?
We're back~! After a while because I decided to add in some of the events in the game to Twilight's Emissary's timeline, so it took a while to get those things sorted out. It's to help Emery/Yuu's relationships develop better with the TWST cast outside of the main story such as those with Malleus for example.
Also to develop a bit of OC lore for Grace and Astor, but that's primarily going to be in Endless Halloween for a variety of reasons we'll get to later. Also Lore in general? I love dropping some lore.
And now to drop this chapter! Enjoy!
Please keep in mind that the following chapter takes place shortly after the events of Book 2.

Valentine's makes ADeuce scramble to figure out what to do. Emery, meanwhile, is completely calm about it and doesn't see it as much of a big deal as the boys do. She does make something for her friends and her boys.
She had a hard time getting away with it because Valentine's Day overlapped a little with VDC and bringing all that sugar into Ramshackle was difficult to do with Vil, but she managed to do it.
Each of them is personalized depending on the person she's giving it to. For example, Ace and Deuce get special chocolates from her in the shape of hearts and spades. Emery struggled with them so much that they came out messy and not as perfect as she wanted. She was embarrassed as she gave out the chocoloate and cookies she made.
They eat them either way. It's not the look that matters, but the taste, says ace and gets elbowed in the ribs for it the thought that counts. All the housewardens, the first years (yes, even Sebek... and Ortho, because he isn't a student yet) and Lilia and Jamil. They're all platonic and it's meant to show her appreciation for their friendship and to be kind.
Astor has those little valentine's cards the elementary schoolers get to hand out to their classmates. Except he has a shit ton of them and is passing them out to all the NRC students and staff so they have a Valentine no matter what. Those he's closer to get little personal messages written inside. For example, Azul's card is telling him that he's really smart while Riddle's tells him that he's a good leader.
Emery does get quite a few from accidental admirers on Valentine's Day, as well as a couple from her friends all under the guise of being platonic, but whether they are or not is up in the air. I've also been amusing myself with the thought of ADeuce, the other first years -- or even members of the VDC squad since that would overlap with the holiday -- stepping in when there's that one very aggressive and persistent suitor.
Ace: "Just because she's nice to you doesn't mean that she actually likes you. So knock it the fuck off."
In the end, the most of the VDC crew, Astor and the Ramshackle duo manage to figure out who sent each card that Emery gets because a lot of them aren't signed. A majority of them were from friends and meant to be platonic. Others needed some bros on stand-by just in case as Emery has to let some of their classmates down as easy as she can manage.
Which leads to this conversation at the end of the day.
Emery: "Well, that puts a name on almost all of these." Jamil: "Almost?" Emery: "Mm-hm. This one." (She holds up one last Valentine's card that has been clearly made by hand.) "I still never figured out who sent this one. Rook: "If you wish, I could hunt down the admirer--" Emery: "I've had enough of that for today, thank you." sigh "I'm going to bed. Don't touch my card." (A beat.) Vil: "You already know who sent it, don't you?" Rook: "Oui." Vil: "You're not going to tell her, are you?" Rook: chuckle "Now where's the fun in that?"
Rook just likes to watch from the sidelines and cackle to himself as he watches Emery be oblivious as shit to the whole situation.
No matter who sent it, Emery does cherish it. It's the first, sincere and non-platonic valentine that she's received that wasn't a joke, made her uncomfortable or hurt her in any way.

" Look at them! They're so adorable!"
" I don't know about that, but it is strange that they look so similiar to us. "
Right at the deadline, and I finish with these. I had too much fun with drawing the Tsums, that it got done twice: once for Astor, and again for Emery.
I like to think that Tsumery is the only one that makes a reappearance after the first Tsum visit. This time, she drags Astor-Tsum with her along with the others.

Astor Crowley
The latest addition to the Twilight's Emissary cast. There's not much about him yet, as he only appeared at the end of Book 2, but my friends instigated an idea of mine and now Astor's here.
More of him to come in the future!

In which the tournament finally takes place.
Getting this installment of the series out took far longer than I expected it to, but here we are at the end of Book 2! Thank you to everyone who left comments and kudos and kept supporting from the background during the struggles I had to keep up with this.
We've made it to the end of Book 2, and I'm excited for it. There's one little thing that was mentioned earlier that has yet to be properly resolved. I'm a bit nervous about this, but enjoy the chapter and the surprise.

This is Halloween: WIP Preview, Chapters 6 - 10
Since these are still works-in-progress, it is likely that the following excerpts will change between now and the final draft! Please keep that in mind while reading.
Chapter 6: Disregard and Disrespect
Grace: (as Idia pulls his glove back on) Ortho Shroud, what were you thinking?! (Ortho jolts a bit, not expecting to be yelled at like this.) Activating something so dangerous and at guests no less! While I agree that their actions might not have been the most reasonable, there was no need for you to--!
Ortho: But I was so close to destroying the bad guys!
Grace: Zip! Do not say it like that. (Ortho shuts his mouth. She groans, pinching the bridge of her nose. She needs to rest for a week after Halloween is over.)
Ortho: Why did you kick them out?
Grace: You can’t just blast people! (She can’t believe that she had to say that. Ortho pouts, looking fairly similar to Astor when he’s angry about something. Grace sighs, rubbing her temple. If she wasn’t currently incorporeal, she could swear that she was getting a headache.)
Idia: Ortho, what happened? I’ve never seen you like this before. (Ortho looks a bit disappointed for a moment before leading the pair over to a nearby table where a library book lay. Grace picks it up, to find that there’s something dripping from it.) Did someone spill soda on it?
Ortho: (nods) Those visitors were eating sweets and drinking soda inside the library. I told them to replenish their nutrients outside, but they wouldn’t listen to me. In fact, they surrounded me and gushed about the ‘cute robot costume’ I had on. They even started to poke me!
Idia: Wh-What kinda bottom-tier behavior...?!
Ortho: They said things like, "You live around here, kiddo?" and "Baby want a waffle?" They tried to shove food into my oral cavity. Foreign objects in my system can cause breakdowns! And while I was protesting and arguing with them, a soda can got tipped over. (To Grace) I'm so sorry for ruining a valuable library book.
Grace: Well… the good news is that it’s not one of the rarer books in the library’s collection. It doesn’t seem too damaged, so I’ll talk to the headmaster about trying to find a way to fix it. If not, it won’t be too hard to get a replacement.
Chapter 7: A Breaking Point
Astor: B-But--! This is the first time we--! (Astor shuts his mouth, but the look on his face is enough to speak volumes for how he’s feeling. Crowley heaves a sigh.)
Crowley: We can fix the statues easily enough. But if anyone got injured, that would be more than difficult. It’s a matter that we’d have to report to the police, and if that were to happen…. I don't even want to think about it! (A beat. Grace clears her throat.)
Grace: Th-The point is that no matter how much everyone was looking forward to this, we as your teachers and technical guardians while you’re on campus, cannot take the risk of the situation getting any worse.
Jade: Is there some reason he wouldn’t want the police sniffing around? A secret he doesn’t want them to unearth? (A chill runs down Astor’s spine as Jade leans over his shoulder to ask him directly. Astor bites his lip and dashes over to hide behind Emery. She sighs and pats his shoulder.)
Deuce: We’ve worked so hard to prepare for this…
Epel: RIght. Everyone was so excited for the party!
Jack: And the islanders come every year. We’d be letting them down, too. (Emery sighs.)
Grim: YEAH! And it's, like, against my rights or whatever to miss out on fancy party food! (A beat.)
Emery: Wait! (Emery rushes up to the staff.) I get that this is a delicate situation, I do. But what if the campus was safe again? If the problem was solved and no one was in any danger, would the party still go on?
Crowley: Hm? Uh… well, yes, but-- (She tries her best to put on her puppy dog eyes.)
Emery: Please?
Crowley: (to himself) Please don’t do this to me… (to Grace) Grace?
Grace: Huh? Well, uh… I believe that this would be better for you to answer--
Chapter 8: Terrific Terror is Trending
Vil: …I suppose you have a point. It worked out well enough, as far as ad-libbing goes. …Astor?
Astor: I think I bit my lip that first time around. I didn’t realize that these things would be so sharp… (Vil sighs as Astor tries to wipe away the bloody smear on his lip. He gives him a tissue to deal with the injury, muttering something about the fangs.)
Epel: (as Vil cleans up Astor’s face) Um, Vil? Are you sure that you two should be driving them off?
Vil: Mm? Absolutely.
Astor: No. (Vil shoots him a look before sighing.)
Vil: Think about the vindication you’ll feel after striking back at this nuisance. (Astor hums.) Child or not, you shouldn’t let someone so easily take nonconsensual photographs of you among other things. (Other things?)
Epel: That’s not what I meant. What if word spreads that you’re a vampire? And the whole prince of the night thing… (Oh, that. Vil and Astor exchange looks with each other. Did no one tell Epel? Rook chuckles, putting a hand on Epel’s shoulder that serves to startle him.)
Rook: Monsieur Pommette! What a sweet soul you are. (Sweet soul, he says, but Epel looks ready to tear someone’s head off from that scare.) Worry not, measures have already been taken. (He hands Epel his phone. It’s a Magicam search for a specific tag that the pair came up with earlier that morning.) This is what comes up on Magicam when you look up the hashtag #BewitchingVampire.
Epel: Wow, that’s a lot of posts…
Astor: Pomefiore took them this morning and posted them on Magicam with that hashtag. I talked to my dad about it, and he said it was okay. Though, I think posting all three hundred was a lot.
Chapter 9: Foolish Mortals and Ghoulish Delight
(A door appears before the Magicam Monsters, and Emery pushes it open.)
Emery: Here, come with me. (The couple looks relieved as they rush towards her. Emery leads them up the staircase and down a hall lined with various portraits of people ranging from historical figures in her textbooks to faces she doesn’t know.)
Woman: Th-Thank you so much! I thought we’d be stuck in there forever!
Man: Who are you? …wait, are you the girl that goes here? I heard rumors about it on Magicam!
Woman: Wait, is that you?!
Emery: Yes, I’m afraid that it is. (And now… time to play the role. Knowing Emery’s aversion to lies, the script that they came up with only twisted the truth slightly.) I am a student, but I am also the keeper of this place.
Man: Huh?
Woman: You really live here?!
Emery: Someone has to tend to the ghosts’ home. And they are very displeased about trespassers… (She glances back at them as they step into a more open space. Emery places the candelabra down in the center of the room. Dusty instruments lay about. She didn’t know where they came from, only having found this space recently. They might have been here for a while. She had no idea what to do with them before, but now they make the perfect props.)
Man: (as Emery picks up a tambourine) C-Can you help us get out of here?
Emery: I’m afraid that all trespassers must pay their dues. (She shakes the tambourine a little.) The residents that call this their home will not be happy when they discover you. I suspect that they’ve already been made aware of your presence. And there’s always room for more spirits here.
Woman: Please let us go. We won’t--! (Emery shakes the tambourine.)
Emery: As keeper of this place, it is my duty to protect it and all who live here. I promised them that they could have a little… fun if anyone dared to set foot in this place. All I have to do is call them forth.
Man: Wait, there’s no need to do that! We just--
Emery: Set foot in someone’s home, ignoring the warnings that we had put outside for the safety of others. And now you must pay the price. (She shakes her tambourine again, seeing the fear start to grip the couple before her.) Horntoads and lizards, fiddle and strum… answer my call by beating a drum!
(The drum in the nearby corner echoes with a heavy beat from Gus’s hand. The ghosts play the instruments, keeping their forms hidden from mortal eyes.)
Emery: Ghostly fiends and furies, old friends and new! Blow into a horn so we’ll know it’s you! (Phineas decides to blow the trumpet right about Emery’s head, making her flinch at the noise a little. She clears her throat, remaining calm as she continues.) Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat… call the spirits, wherever they’re at! Rap on a table, it’s time to respond. Send us a message from the great beyond! (Lilia’s cackle and Malleus’s dark laughter echo through the dorm with Grim’s high-pitched giggles to cap it off. Heavy thuds courtesy of Silver and Sebek are the icing on the cake while they hide under the table.) Goblins and ghouls from last Halloween, awaken the spirits with a tambourine! (To punctuate this, Emery shakes her tambourine. A simple spell from Malleus causes the sound to bounce around and make it hard to tell where it’s coming from.)
Chapter 10: Our School on Halloween
Malleus: Me? Ah, you’re referring to the situation with the Magicam Monsters. (Emery nods.) I simply provided basic courtesies that anyone should expect. As I said, I had a most pleasant Halloween at Ramshackle Dorm. That would have never happened without you lending us the use of your dorm. Returning the favor was the least I could do.
Emery: What do you mean? (Malleus gestures for her to follow him towards the building. Curious, Emery follows. Her eyes widen when Malleus opens the door to the foyer.)
Malleus: While we were… removing some of the modifications we made to scare the Magicam Monsters away I thought that it would be fair to repay you for allowing us to use your dorm as our venue. So Lilia and I took the opportunity to make some repairs. It is not much, but it will make your stay more comfortable.
Emery: You fixed the windows. Y-You patched the holes in the walls and the floors a-a-and the roof--! (The furniture’s all repaired, the pictures are restored… With a grin, she runs up to her room to find it in a similar state. She had little doubt that the rest of the spaces Diasomnia had been in were the same.) You even fixed the lights…
Malleus: Not completely. I wasn’t sure how the electrical system functioned, and it doesn’t work well with my magic so we couldn’t repair that I’m afraid. Only the fixtures themselves have been repaired.
Emery: Thorne, this is so much more than I could ask for! (She hugs him tightly, much to his surprise.) Thank you so much! (He seems startled for a moment, but then smiles and places a hand on her shoulder.)
Malleus: It may have been a mere seven days, but this year’s Halloween was a special one. I do hope you enjoy the rest of your night. Happy Halloween. (He disappears in a burst of fireflies. Emery sighs, looking  around at her dorm. Truly… she had no idea how to thank him for all of this.)
Emery: Happy Halloween, Thorne
