Max was quietly scrolling on his phone after the Las Vegas grand prix, enjoying some down time before the final race of the season . He was just absently looking on tiktok when he received a phone call from none other than Lando. 

“Lando, mate how are you doing after the Las Vegas grand prix?” Max asked, knowing Lando had been taken to medic after his nasty crash at the recent grand prix 

“I’m good, still a bit sore but I’ve gotten the clear to race in the upcoming race so I’m looking forward to that” Lando explained “Thats not why I’m calling though” he continued 

“Oh. What’s up then?” Max asked slightly confused 

“Y/N Y/L/N was at the Las Vegas grand prix and you met her? How was she? She got invited by Red Bull, how did that work? Is she as pretty in person as she is on social media?” Lando rambled on 

“Lando take a breath” Max chuckled “But yes she was there, invited by Red Bull. I think they just reached out to her and asked if she wanted to come. How is she? Dude I don’t know, she’s nice, kept thanking everyone for the invitation, she told us she’s a massive F1 fan which was cool” Max answered the boys questions 

“And as for her looks, I have a girlfriend however yes she looks the same in person as she does in the media” He rolled his eyes even if Lando couldn’t see him. “Why are you so curious?” He asked his friend trying to understand where all this was coming from 

“She’s been one of my biggest celebrity crushes and I was so looking forward to hopefully getting to meet her when I found out she’d be there but then I crashed” He chuckled slightly at how much he sounded like a little kid “Then I saw you met her and just wanted to see what she was like” He explained to Max 

Max let out a laugh before answering the younger driver “Well Mate, you should have McLaren invite her to the final race of the season, this way you’ll get to meet her” Max suggested “Im sure she’ll accept, I believe she said filming for her show hasn’t started yet so she’s available” He explained to Lando 

“Ohhh maybe I’ll mention it to the admin team” Lando said more as a thought than a concrete response “Anyways I have to go, Oscar and I are filming a PR video. Thanks Max, see you in a couple days” Lando said before hanging up before Max could say anything else 

Max just laughed “Bye to you to” he said out loud before going back to scrolling on his phone.

“You were one of my biggest celebrity crushes” He told you a small blush appearing on his face “Which is why when I didn’t get to meet you after Vegas, I may have mentioned to someone on the admin team to reach out and invite you to the last race of the season” He finished 

“Wait so you already had a crush on me before we even met? Lando thats so cute” You smiled at him “I get why Max commented that now, you really were the mastermind, I’m impressed” You smirked 

“Really? You don’t think its weird or anything?” He asked for reassurance 

“Not at all” You told him, moving closer to him on the couch “If you hadn’t have done what you did, who knows if we’d be here right now” You explained smiling at him, Lando returning the same smile

It was a warm summer night in the OBX. The sound of waves gently crashing against the shore, and the crackle of the bonfire that lit up the small circle of people gathered around it, filled the air. The Outer Banks was always beautiful, but tonight it felt different—it felt alive. Laughter echoed in the distance, music floated on the air, and the scent of burning wood mixed with the smell of fresh saltwater, lingered.

You stand with your feet in the sand, allowing the water hit your ankles, taking pictures of the scene before you. The candid moments are what you enjoy capturing, the band of kids skipping, Sarah and Kie attempting to jump over the waves, and JJ and Pope betting on who’ll be the drunkest. Through the lens of your camera, you scan the party looking for something to snap a picture of. Your gaze falls on the figure, laying against the driftwood, watching the party.

Rafe.

He stands with a beer in his hand, observing the partygoers. You catch his eyes in a brief exchange, that has him making his way over to you. Readjusting your camera you aim to capture the bonfire, but a face appears blocking your view.

“Always hiding behind a camera, huh?

Resting the camera in your hands, you respond with a grin.

“It’s called capturing.”

His face scrunches up like the realization just hits him. “Right, capturing, I forget. Too good for the bonfire? Shouldn’t you be mingling with your friends?”

His tone is teasing, but there’s no hint of mockery in his voice. You laugh lightly, shrugging your shoulders.

"I’m mingling. I’m just doing it in my own way."

He smirks but doesn’t push you any further, watching you for a moment before nodding in appreciation. Rafe lowers himself to sit beside you, crossing his arms over his chest. His eyes briefly glance to the group at the bonfire, then back to you almost like he’s calculating his next move.

"So, what’s your deal? You’re always taking pictures, always writing. I never hear about anything other than your camera or whatever new hobby you’ve picked up."

“Why are you so curious?” You ask raising a brow.

“But if you must know, it’s not about my camera or the hobby. It’s about finding the beauty in things most people overlook. Like flowers and other plants, people just walk all over them never really taking them into account. It’s the little things.”

His eyes flicker with something unreadable, as he scans your face. The corners of his mouth turn upwards as he nods his head.

“Sounds boring, but I get it."

You laugh, kicking sand at him, as he narrowly avoids it. Silence falls between you, but it’s not awkward, it’s comfortable.

“I wanna show you something.” He extends his hand.

rafe’s phone

He leads you to his truck parked in a clearing past the beach, a street lamp illuminating it. He hands you a small leather journal, with a pen attached to the bottom. He gestures for you to open it as he begins.

"I remember your love for writing and I’ve been writing a little. Songs, I mean. But it’s... it’s nothing. Just stuff I mess with when I get bored."

The pages are filled with lyrics and headings. The songs are either really short or really long. The lyrics are ambiguous but they all seem to be about pretty much the same girl.

“Rafe, these are really good. You should share these, you could definitely do something with this.”

He hesitates, and for a moment, his confidence seems to have faded completely. He lowers his gaze, almost embarrassed, as though the idea of sharing something so raw with other people feels like exposing a part of himself he’s not ready to show. But after a beat, he meets your eyes again, an unspoken challenge in his gaze.

“I don’t think I’m ready for that yet, I mean I’m not really sure why I’m sharing it with you.”

You smile gently, sensing his vulnerability. You don’t push him, instead closing the journal.

“Well thank you. This is..it’s amazing truly. Maybe one day I’ll see you at the Grammy’s on tv. Wouldn’t that be something, huh?

Rafe looks at you for a moment, considering your words carefully. There’s a flicker of something in his eyes—a deep longing mixed with fear. It seems as if he wants to say something, but he offers you a smile instead and suggests you head back.

When you guys arrive back, people are spread out and away from the bonfire, opting to huddle together and surf the waves. You engage in quiet conversation with him sitting by the fire, drifting between lighthearted banter and serious discussions about your futures.

You don’t even realize how close the two of you are until, the sound of his breathing starts to overpower the sound of the waves crashing.

He stops talking then, his face turning to look down at you with an intense look on his face, and there’s a slight waver in his voice when he speaks.

“You know, you make it really hard to keep pretending like I’m fine.”

Your breath hitches, the emotional weight of his words catching you off guard. Before you get a chance to respond, his hand finds your cheek, and for a split second it’s like the world around you disappears.

He leans in slowly, giving you a chance to pull away if you want. But you don’t. And your lips meet—tentative at first, testing the waters. It’s gentle, but there’s a heat that builds between you, a yearning that neither of you can ignore. As the kiss deepens, there’s a sense of urgency, as if you’ve both been holding back for far too long.

“I don’t know if I can stay away from you.” He whispers against your lips.

The kiss ends abruptly when you hear someone calling you out by the sand. You pull back, your heart racing.

“I should...go see what that’s about.”

Rafe’s hand lingers on your wrist, pulling you gently back toward him. His voice is low, “This doesn’t end here, does it?”

You hesitate, but you offer him a small smile, before getting up and walking away. Leaving him standing there, still feeling the weight of your kiss on his lips. You don’t answer, but your silence speaks volumes.

a/n: this is kinda bad, but um 😕 if you stick around it gets better i think. being a student is stressful on every aspect of my life rn. also if anyone wants to be tagged just comment, and ill make a taglist. hope you enjoy!! for now the chapters are gonna be, odd = present, even = past. hoping to get chapter 3 out by 6pm est tm.
