deranged rant below the cut about glinda and her social performances

glinda exists in this fuege state of understanding and analysing the people and world around her but utterly, absolutely not understanding herself.

the entire popular song, while a performance of glinda dumbing down her own intelligence out of habit, is also an acute deconstruction of the role and power of public figures. social perception is king, and we know that because the wizard of oz exists. his power is nothing but perception, it comes entirely from looks and manner and how to play to an audience. glinda's intrinsically understood how their government/structures of power works without even meeting the damn man.

but! at the same time! the entire popular sequence is bombastic and silly and makes glinda come off as a dizty moron. it's almost as if, in understanding how to appeal to the masses and how to secure herself as Somebody, glinda's stuffed the parts of her that are so brilliantly smart into a box and shoved it under the metaphorical bed. it only shines sometimes, when she's alone in a room with someone who's peered at her and seen through the performance. someone glinda deems as safe, and real.

and i think she's only half-aware of this. because glinda does also enjoy the performance, its honestly a facet of her personality, but i think shes gone so far into it that she starts to believe this is just how she is. that its not strategy, it's not a desperate- and deviously smart -effort for attention and honours and love, its just how glinda is! shes popular! she gets people! its just how she's born, because isnt everyone so unfortunate to not have (these very obviously developed skills) this know-how, aw! she's not fundamentally lonely and unhappy with herself, she's not profoundly afraid of never being loved, or known, or even remembered. she's glinda upland, she's the most popular, most well-known, most adored, it's just how she is of course!

her fears, by the time of shiz, seem subconscious, at least to me. i think it's fundamental fears that she carried as a child and learnt how to cover them up, learnt how to navigate to get what that child wants. but in doing so, she's simplified herself to such a degree that she doesn't even allow herself to understand who glinda, now, is. or even, she's performing so well she's even convinced herself that its a non-issue that she's perfectly fine as she is. because the plan is working, isnt it? people love her. no need for introspection if its working!

she's just. so many things and can only conceptualise one or two of those things because in order to be popular, you have to be digestible and noticeable to the people around you. you have to be one-dimension, simple and easy, but loud enough that everyone notices. it develops into her acute narcissism because glinda deep down believes- or rather knows -that popular is all she has. so popular is all she becomes. she doesn't think beyond those terms because she never allows herself to.

the outlier here is the wish to become a sorceress and study magic. (which is so inherently linked to elphaba, soulmatism there). because that requires that ridiculously sharp brain of hers that glinda's been ignoring because She Is Popular, and in doing so glinda's efforts to learn magic is sort of her attempting to be who she actually is, deep down. a little girl who loves magic and wants to do good with it, who was gifted a pointed black witch's hat by her nana. but, by the time she's at shiz, she's so consumed by the efforts to be popular and liked and to fit in and have that influence - to be somebody, even if it isnt who glinda actually is - that in trying to become a sorceress she uses all her popular tricks. ala, an egotistic, narcissistic, social ladder climbing, seeming-idiot.

which is just so fascinating. she's aware from her upbringing as a rich, upper-class socialite how looks and appearance are everything. shes so desperate to be loved and to fit in and to never, ever be on the out that she compartmentalises everything that isn't digestible and easy and one-dimensional. and for so long, and for such desperation, that glinda boxes herself into an imaginary world - the world of upper-class social circles, something entirely disconnected from reality. its all she knows, its the only reality she's ever really operated within, and so its all she's trying to be, and it makes her come across as this stupid, air-headed fool who cares so much about herself she's only marginally aware of everyone else.

she's also constantly building different realities and disfiguring herself into them to fit. she uses all that intelligence she has to lie and lie and lie to herself and does it so well that's all she thinks there is. all her subsequent actions are built off of this genuine belief that that is how the world actually works, and that this is how she is. because she's so, incredibly good at never being who glinda upland actually is that's she's convinced herself, too.

but. god. glinda's only doing this because there's this hole in her chest she's using crowds to fill. and in doing this, she will never get the love she's craving because the people dont know her, and so cant love her, and the desperation is there to simply find different people, more people - because if it isnt working now, surely fiyero will fix it. surely scale will fix it. surely if she's popular at university, popular at the city, popular on a state level, then that love will satisfy her, finally.

glinda's entire existence is her consciously and unconsciously performing so incredibly well for something she thinks will fix the utterly consuming fear of being alone. and it never works. until, and after, elphaba, it never ever works. in every crowd she's in, she's not known or understood and therefore still alone. she's still a scared little girl shouting for someone to look at her, please, she will be good and popular and whatever you want her to be, but just look at her so she isn't so scared of being nothing at all.

she's brilliant, and she's stupid, and she's brilliant at being stupid, and it makes me want to slap her.

i'm serious... her mom died when she was a toddler and jerry hasn't had a long-term relationship since, so he's the only parental figure that she has

she refuses to do any drugs during lacrosse season. she's so strict with her diet during the season that she won't ingest anything other than quality, nutritious food. she also needs to submit a drug test a few times per season so she doesn't wanna risk it.

in the off season, she's more willing to have a puff or two at a party or take an edible before a movie night or something (i don't see her doing any drug other than weed)

she lived with manny during her freshman and sophomore years

I’m a new fan of asoiaf (and Arya obvi lol) and I love ur blog <3 there’s a popularish post on this site that basically talks abt how the comparison between Arya and Lyanna is meant to convey that they were both tomboys and not that Arya is actually really pretty and I generally agree bc obviously yeah but it seemed kinda weird that like so many of the ppl reblogging that post were like either huge Sansa stans or were hellbent on telling others that Arya is NOT pretty which… I feel like is also missing the point?? Idk if you know which post I’m referring to, but either way I was wondering if that’s like a general fandom opinion that Arya is meant to be this conventionally unattractive person that doesn’t have looks really tied to their stories (kinda like Brienne)? I can take a guess at which post you're referencing and yes, it is a generally accepted idea that Arya isn't meant to be pretty. I don't think that's specific to Tumblr either, I've seen people on tiktok/reddit/twitter/etc. argue the same. While I do think there's a point to be made about Lyanna's memory being romanticized, I disagree that the conclusion should be that Lyanna and Arya aren't meant to be pretty. The idea that personality and looks aren't dependent on each other seems to be a difficult one for this fandom to grasp, so they treat Lyanna being pretty and her being a tomboy as mutually exclusive when they can (and do) coexist. There would be no point in Arya and Lyanna being referenced as pretty as many times as they are (several times for each of them) if that wasn't the case. "Missing the point" is a great way of describing it because this take is dependent on ignoring what's written in the books. As usual, I think this links back to fandom's inability to comprehend female characters that don't neatly fit into flat archetypes and their placing value on beauty and not wanting said value associated with the wrong "type" of characters. Arya and Lyanna being pretty and wild/non-conforming seems to be a little bit beyond fandom's processing capabilities.

the blk yn “stereotypical” stories are self indulgent and the relationships are unfulfilling and unhealthy. yeah. 

i never mentioned fully the stereotype thing that’s associated with blk yn fics and that’s because i have never really understood what ppl meant by it. and this isn’t to be funny towards the ppl that say that abt those certain fics.

i somewhat? get what ppl mean by yn is written as a stereotype when it comes to the toxicity in fics but because these stories are written by blk women for blk women who feel comfortable with those types of behaviors, dynamics and relationships i feel it shouldn’t be seen as blk women writing themselves as stereotypes because the comfortability with that idea of relationships comes from somewhere and it’s not no stereotype. 

stereotype: 1. a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person

that word itself just projects an idea on those ppl and (not to use a buzz word but) dehumanizes them. it dilutes and dismisses the perception and character those women see themselves as and i don’t personally think that okay. 

lots of ppl are accustomed to or find comfort in certain dynamics and behaviors for so many different and very personal reasons. (whether extreme or not.) without even knowing sometimes we all do or have because we are still ppl at the end of the day. so chalking up someone’s humanness to a stereotype is unfair to me. it’s the same shit that ppl did to us back in the day and still do till this day and i find it unnecessary to do amongst ourselves.

that’s why i chose to say the relationships in those books and fics are unfulfilling. the dynamics, behaviors and all that ain’t healthy. if we being real. and that’s more than just a stereotype. i also dk what ppl mean by her being a stereotype in particular. maybe being extroverted? ion know. 

but ppl who want to write those things are going to do what they want but that doesn’t mean..

blk women don’t deserve or that it’s impossible for us to have more exposure to more fluffy and healthy dynamics in books with us as the main leads (also all blk ppl cause not just women read books obvi and want fluffy romance that’s another convo tho). it’s also important we showcase blk girls in various ways because we all are very different.

**we should keep in mind a fictional! character we call blk yn can be a ya (young adult) so mistakes and learning experiences in fics aren’t always useless. (though it seems we’ve had enough of it im just saying)

with different ways of thinking, with different styles, quirks, and personalities. right now it’s mostly coquettes, bimbos, and baddies being written almost similarly each time. and that’s perfectly fine but i think there’s something else that ppl are wanting to see but i would like to know what exactly.

do you guys want see her in different styles? talking differently? as an ambivert or a shy girl? someone who doesn’t talk much or someone who does? like what would be the opposite of the “stereotypes” you normally see?

but honestly, because of that maybe give writers prompts and requests with what you’d like to read. there are many writers who always have requests open and lots of times those asks are some of their most popular posts!

ppl started only reading or getting used to smutty and plug books cause that’s all there was, (there was an influx at the time) especially since 2020. that’s also when the blk fic community began to grow so there were more blk fics and writers than it used to be. so maybe we can try and do that with fluffy, fantasy and wtv other fics. 

**also there are some really good books on kindle for you guys to try with blk girls as the lead that might be interesting for you. here’s some of my suggestions: sunny disposition! and excuse me while i ugly cry! (these are just from the top of my head)

i personally have noticed so much about myself from reading more wholesome stories and stuff so reading other fics or books sometimes isn’t for me. it’s books i’ve read that i look back at and see how much i have grown from what i used to be into. that’s why i don’t reblog as much anymore too because i want to find more that is more personally up my alley.

so yeah let’s just try and find and create more books that are healthier. blk girls deserve love, kindness, to be treated gently not weak (or a like a child) and have sweet stories. stories and portrayals that heal us.

we can have suspense, drama, mystery, ups and downs, and even rain but i think a lot of us just want the sunshiney stuff. maybe that way we can digest the suspenseful and dramatic stories (that aren’t toxic) in a better way.

like i said in my last post we read and write for comfort so i think we can use this as a way to heal ourselves as well.

hiyaaaaaay now thats definitely a question😭 disclaimer: this is veeeery wishy-washy and fanfiction-y, based on barely anything else but *vibes* and my observations. this is strictly my perspective, and may not at all overlap w anyone's involved. none of this should be treated as actual information (just like anything else i say, pretty much).

so the quick answer is: yes. (but "feelings" is very broad)

in depth: i am 99,9% sure the answer is yes. at some point(/s), to some degree, some kinds of feelings, definitely yes. in the beginning it (whatever it was) seemed to pair with a sort of admiartion, which im sure they still have, but back then K could have been more like a far away, untouchable, sensational concept, now K is closer and she knows her well and loves and trusts her (and she is her god. never forget that😭😭😭). like rn she for sure loves K very very dearly and very very much. do you know abt that kind of love when u r not exactly sure what box to put it into, but all that matters is that its there and its a big feeling. and maybe u would be open to it being sexual/romantic too, but u might as well be fine w nothing of the sort ever happening, u just want to keep each other close. well they seem to fall under this bracket from where i stand.

obvi we know K has vocalised her opinion on the matter back in the days pretty clearly. and i'd argue that she has kept doing so up until very recently. and i'd also argue that so did T. like, the jig has been up for a decade, i think atp its their subconscious speaking sometimes, and they might not even be fully aware of how they r coming off (for example: the way they kept describing each other when asked abt their ideal partners. like, im sure they do not spend their days actively pining for each other. but like. u see it, i see it, we all see it?). im not saying they'd be perfect together w no issues and no rough times, bc thats just not realistic at all, but i know for a fact that they do love each other so very much im not even sure what a person can do w that intensitiy. (do they love each other the most? like, im not joking here, do u remember the times they have both said things like "u r my fav person" or "i definitely love u very much" or T pressing K on who she loves the most until she said her name? like??? if things have happened in the last months then i think ppl might have fallen out of Ts line who had a chance at being higher on the list (for a few possible reasons. such as being a romantic partner and how u r "supposed to" place those ones higher. but i get that. i just also have a lot of feeling abt this, surprisingly) then they *do* do love each other the most, dont they? so its all veeery complicated w them😭

the thing i am not certain abt is if T ever called it what it was, even only to herself. bc. like she doesnt seem to be a very big fan of said possibility of said feelings towards said person regardless of whether or not its true. like yes she will float the idea as a """joke""" of K being her partner at netflick in the middle of watching something totally irrelevant. but as a sentimental deep and actual reality im decently sure she does not like it. at different times of the last decade for different reasons (understandable ones, if i might add. the worst of it is that i can easily justify everything from both ends and thats why its just so UGH bc i get it. but i still think they r silly for doing things the way they do them). i think she knows on a level of being aware of what time it is, but the most in-character thing in my head would be for her to just go "no💗 like okay i see u i hear u i cant do anything but accept the fact that there is smth but just no. we got to stop, we cant be doing this. so i will not be acknowledging anything of the sort. bye". like ik it sounds stupid spelled out like this, but what i mean is that i feel like she worked on putting these things neatly away (before they even really had a chance to form into a graspable thought), and despite the box being made of glass and a little seetrought here and there, she seems to be content abt it being as it is.

chicken girls s10 opinions! (since the final episode came out today)

this season was honestly ROUGH with many different details that made it better and worse in some ways?

season 10a (episodes 1-10):

• the beginning of season 10a was such a slow beginning! getting through the first few episodes was such a bore and i would often skip weeks of watching😭

• i love brat for trying out the parallel between the second gen (s7-9) and third gen (s10) plot lines but i hated it! I’m sorry!!! it was kind of messy and pointless to say the least

• ivy is a boring protagonist and that’s that. after having iconic characters like rhyme and harmony as our leads, ivy didn’t have the spark that they did? she got severely better in 10b (will go in depth later) but she was such a bitch all of 10a!

• kara and ivys beef was honestly funny to watch. im somewhat of a kara stan so to see their beef that was REASONABLE was entertaining and one of the saving graces of 10

• you could tell the writers were bored out of their minds making this season! half of the plot points were either dropped mid season or not even fully developed!!

• bailey and her brother were kind of annoying im sorry. she felt like a sport version of leyla that was whiny literally the WHOLE season. this isn’t the actors fault at all, it’s simply THE WRITERS FAULT

• jj was a chill character. i liked her and she made sense. her home plot line was really sad and bailey had her best moment in the whole season by helping jj which i enjoyed. jj and bailey are one of my fav ships this season btw, they were cute and i enjoyed watching them! (sorry reading this back, this sentence made no sense😭)

• the gen 2 chicken girls were so boring in 10a. i feel like the writers just wanted to keep them in so ppl would still watch for one reason or another. in result of this, they got the dumbest plot lines in the show. I MEAN WHAT WAS THE TEST PLOTLINE W SIMONE AND PETRA?! my girl simone went through sm in 10b tho which ill go in depth on later obvi

• why did poppy do a full personality 360 from forever team? made no sense whatsoever!

• LOVE LOVE LOVE that we brought the dance team back!? it was random but i loved the og plot w the dance team and all that

• petra was a bitch in 10a and i loved her sm😆 she was a better written character than the 4 lead girls and idk why the writers did that but slay!

• kara x bailey, i was waiting the whole god damn season for and we didn’t get it😭

• the best character award goes to finn! he wasn’t annoying and remained my favorite character the whole season. some of y’all bout to hate but he was the best male character chicken girls has SEEN. he was such a better love interest that both walker and tk

• ivy and finn were cute ig? idk they got a build up which i liked but it was also out of nowhere

• finn, kara and jj were such a trio this second half and i LIVED for it! they were so supportive towards each other

• bailey tempering with more stuff she shouldn’t be dealing with YET AGAIN!! she didn’t need to do that whole thing for ben and set him up w a girl that was literally sapphic and liked her😭

• ivy tryna kiss petras man? kinda bitchy but it was fun to watch more in 10b than 10a? ivy and theo were also kinda cute ngl and they had chemistry

• SIMONE AND CLAIRE WERE AT EACH OTHERS THROATS.

• bailey got better FINALLY. getting her OWN plot line without having to temper with other peoples? YES YES YES. and it was abt trust issues too. ugh so real girl

• petra was so real all of 10b and also deserved SO MUCH BETTER OMG. i felt so bad for her the whole second half

• the whole football, dance crossover bailey thing was kind of a smart move on the directors part? idk it was kinda boring but also gave bailey MORE DEPTH WHICH SHE NEEDED!

• kara and ivy had that really cute moment where they forgave each other and ended the rivalry. absolutely loved that

• ivys eating disorder was so important and a great plot point. i love that she was able to open up to the team! my only criticism was that (again, like most of the season) came out of nowhere!

• i feel like they could’ve afforded a better set. you could even tell regionals wasn’t even real bc they didn’t even have a stage

• bailey and sage! i liked them ngl and i hope sage comes back

• why did ivy go back to finn? like she wanted theo the whole season and then went back to him?…I LOVED IT! again, gave the season a bit of spice towards the end which came back to me wanting more!

• the last two episodes were REMARKABLE! 10B WAS GOOD AS IT STARTED OUT BUT UGH GOT SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING AND I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE THE NEW EP TODAY

• petra needs to come back. i miss her already :(

• i lowkey thought jj and finn were gonna happen but I GUESS NOT. no but i also feel like jj was hinted at as being sapphic. she said smth like "the upsides of being a lesbian are.." and idk if that was referring to bailey or not but i found that interesting

• the group dynamic wasnt there until the last three episodes which was like again, the writers fault but them getting the bracelets out of nowhere was so confusing

• THE LGBTQ SHIPS THIS SEASON (canon and non canon) WERE SO GOOD BYE- BAILEY WAS DEF A SHIPPABLE CHARACTER AND UGH I JUST LOVED IT. FINN MY TRANS BABY!!

• now finally, the gen 2 chicken girls and they're PLOTLINE THIS SEASON. 10a was pointless but 10b. wtf was going on! nothing was working out and simone deserved sm better. claire and bel were SUCH trashy friends. poppy wasn't even given a bracelet so idk why she thought she was a chicken girl?! the existence of leyla was also 100% wiped and it felt like everyone forgot her?? claire also got so mad at simone for giving the bracelets away when she and bel didn't even care about the group the whole season💀

final thoughts:

sorry this was like a 85% bashing on the new season but chicken girls has gotten such a downgrade over time. the fans honestly deserve better if any of them are even still watching lmao. i think we are getting a season 11 bc of the cliffhanger as well as corrine joy (simone) posting a tiktok of them filming. if we do get a season 11, ill probably tune in and give my opinions but that's all for now. i would say to the chicken girls fans and anyone else to give this season a watch in your free time. it isn't terrible but it isn't the best we've ever seen from chicken girls *ahem seasons 3 and 7*. anyways, yeah it is worth somewhat of a watch. the start of the season compared to the ending is astronomical on how much of a change it was. ok bye now haha

I actually think that he still suffers from depression from time to time, even now tbh. This is just based on some things I've heard him say, and things I've picked up about him. Having dealt with depression (and anxiety) myself at certain points in my life...Sometimes you can just sorta sense some things about ppl.

So do I think that he has some emotional things going on sometimes? Oh yea, I def do. He was very interested and was asking Janelle Monae for the number to the Emotional Coach that Janelle uses after Janelle mentioned during the Actors on Actors interview how much it helped Janelle. So yea for sure, I def think Austin goes through some emotional things, and there might be some things he's still not emotionally worked through yet. I mean, that's just life sometimes. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Honestly? I think the V breakup was probably for the best.

Think about it.... V met a younger Austin when he was just about 15/16 years old.... And then 5 years later, they begin to date... Then, not too long into the rlshp, his mom gets sick with cancer and then she dies. 😔 Then, about 2 years later HER (Vanessa's) dad dies.... 🥴 Again, these are all stressful events... 🥺 And keep in mind, he dated V all throughout most of his entire 20s.

If you are having issues in the rlshp, or maybe the two of you have grown into two different ppl, then there's nothing wrong with breaking things off. In fact, that's actually the best thing to do imo. Yes, it's painful, but it's better to let that person go and allow them to find someone else who might be better suited for them, and someone who might be better suited for you as well. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Maybe he knew he wouldn't make a good husband during that time. Maybe he needed to feel like he was really autonomous and stable in his career, and not just V's arm candy. And maybe (just maybe!!) Vanessa was sweet, but just not "the one" for him. That is so shocking I know lol, but it could be the truth? 🤷🏾‍♀️ There are so many things we just don't know that could have been going on in the rlshp. Either way, she seems happy and engaged to Cole now, so in reality, maybe Aus did her a favor! 😄

Rewatching Jordan Peele's twilight zone.........and uguguhu who wants to DISCUSSS 😤

I liked the new series sm as a whole I think they did a great effort at capturing aspects of TZ while doing their own thing which I definitely appreciate. Nightmare at 30,000, 6 degrees, and you may also like were an awesome direct nod to og episodes, but....

I do feel like there are some holes that could've benefited from longer episodes or just editing plot-wise. Though overall I love it it does feel lacking to me over certain things, a lot of endings felt lackluster and didn't give justice to the insensity and performance some of these ppl gave. like A Traveler was awesome but I feel like it needed a different exposition or ending, and you may also like was close but it relied a lot of being referential to previous aliens and I feel like the direct conversation w the queen was less impact full than the main character analyzing her own reasons why she would want the egg. Even 8 had the issue of being too much "tell" in something that should be illustrated and fleshed out. 8 was frustrating because I was kinda writing my own plot while watching and the way it ended was just NOT good sorry. I wanted to like that ep so bad but I feel like they circle around important key themes without actually or entirely expressing them in a way that is effective. I feel like there is too much handed to you in certain episodes and you have full arms and are sifting through some irrelevant visuals, red herrings, and unfinished plot points.

Obvi Wunderkind is a simple chefs kiss imo I think this captured old tz pretty well in the buyers remorse vibe although i wish they fleshed out the societal implifications of olivers rule. Also, Meet in the middle was v well done as well it was so nice to see that actor do a more serious roll.

Try try hit me rlly hard and in a way is my favorite among w Nightmare and 6 degrees. I think Try was a fantastic allegory for male entitlment and the way certain men are allowed to repeat and repeat the same violent and predatory behavior while hiding behind accepted societal conventions (being "charming", "unassuming white guy", "nice enough") without accountability. I loved the resolution and how even one time, her seeing him for who he is and defending herself gets him to stop, it's almost like complacency is the fuel for the predatory (!). That's an episode that would've saved my life had it come out when I was younger.

I didn't like "small town" because I feel like it missed a lot of ways that it could've been an impact full episode but it felt v rushed and poorly put together towards the end. I wanted to like the "comedian" and "ovation" (i will say the ending was good I just don't think he path taken was what it could've been) but it felt very expected.

In fact, she was pretty poor. Pe told her that she was the middle child out of 6 kids and a dad that barely could hold a job. But her older siblings took care of her and he others.

And one of her older ones got accepted to the school Fi was attending. It took a toll on them to even get nominated for this school. They really got lucky for going to school there.

And as fate would had it, her sib became good friends with Fi, and once he finally visited their home, her words could only describe it as sparks flying. Fi continued further that meeting her older sister, the sib that got into his school, was a sign of good fortune. Bc of her, he and Pe would have never even crossed paths.

The way her on-and-off bf looked at this girl, that was clearly out of her league, didnt sit right with her.

And the reason why they got married without nobody knowing was bc Pe ever really liked big weddings and liked to keep it stress free. So they went to the courthouse and got married there.

Pe excused herself, leaving Fi & Br alone at the table. And to say that the rich girl was pissed would have been the understatement of the year.

Okay, i have whole ass theories on this, and a couple of fics/series on the docket to include some Barhoun stuff.

Sometimes... I believe that they dated back in college, somehow became friends, spent lots of time studying, late nights, add in a little bit of booze into the mix and one thing lead to another and they fucked. It was out of sheer convenience that it continued or became something more. like, they were both heavy into school, focusing on future careers and making it in the legal world and a lot of other people may not have understood that and demanded more time/effort into a relationship. Whereas with each other it's just a couple of added little kisses when they greet each other, studying while cuddling and some sex added into what their friendship was prior. And then that's that, they graduate, both start working and out of that little Harvard bubble they kinda realize that they're not relationship material but stay good friends and the occasional fuck buddy. AND, while I fully believe that Lucia and Rita are the BEST of friends and Rita takes her on shopping trips and invites out to the hamptons and they gang up on Raf sometimes in a teasing way only a bestie/gf and a mom can, that Rita's parents *absolutely* would *not* approve of their daughter dating Barba. I canon her parents to not be the best, and obvi they're rich and upper east side kinda ppl. So the scholarship kid from the Bronx isn't going to be good enough, ya know?

Option 2: of them just being besties and not dating through college is kinda they casually date as adults, things don't get too serious because they simply *cannot*. Rita likes to dote on people, she likes to gift, she'll *regularly* come home with presents ranging from Raf's favourite sweet treat from the bodega on the corner to cufflinks from Tiffany's kinda thing. She spoils, a lot. And Raf can't deal with that, because they do come from very different backgrounds and he sees it as both a waste of money and like he's a charity case. Make sense? Like, while they both do have some fancy tastes, he just doesn't always feel like he fits into Rita's world. NOW in this situation (and this is the premise for an upcoming series); there is an easy solution. Raf also feels like he's not that great of a partner because he's always working late, can be standoffish/brash, or not always there. Rita's like, too much for him, so... if you add in a third person to make a throuple/poly, THEN Barhoun works. Poly Barhoun is just the far superior ship, Rita has someone to spoil and fawn over, Raf knows that his (third) partner has someone with them and taking care of them when he ends up sleeping in his office cause a case load is too much.

Now: canon wise, here are my speculations pertaining Barhoun.

s14: we first meet the two of them, they're very obviously still banging. Like, they're almost *too* flirty but trying to cover up the flirty if that makes sense. it's all "ms calhoun" "mr barba" with these little smirks, the "ms calhoun, long time no see" and she returns it with a little nod and a grin like she didn't wake up in his bed that morning. PLEASE. you're fooling NO ONE. potentially also dating at this point.

s15: still casual, still banging with potential dating. rita reps liv & amaro in this season, they clearly can't afford her, so it's obvi a favour for Barba.

s16: they fucking FIGHTING in this season, something went down, rita's willing to let it go but barba's got a stick up his ass and when he doesn't back down, she obvi fights fire with fire. they're at each other's throats in her first ep of the season and still tense in the second (my personal two fave options for this are: barba found out about rita/tucker and is irked she never mentioned it. OR, Rita fucked Liv and barba's livid because rita obvi would know that barba was harboring feelings)

s17: back to being friends, whatever happened, the water's cleared, they're still not perfect, but they're back to the teasing and the little games. s18: similar vibes.

Rita: while she has chemistry with plenty of the SVU characters, and a lot of them seem like they could work with her, there's always an issue that wouldn't make it work long term. The only person I can see her successfully being in a long term relationship with is Casey.

i'm gonna start with my train of thought about the actual narrative arc here so that ppl can skip over if they find it boring LMFAO but. without spoilering too much obvi the point is for robin & nance to get together despite the odds and the more i think about it the more i want to explore…. how the repression of these new monstrous traits would reflect the repression of gay feelings/identity in 80s rural indiana. and especially considering the difference between rob & nancy's monster forms…. like the idea that nancy can actually function well as a vampire because she's so familiar with the idea of showing the world a very curated face while robin, who already struggles with “toning it down” and fitting in, now forever hosts a creature that is considered by the world to be ugly and uncontrollable despite her best efforts to NOT act according to her nature. THE DIFFERENT METHODS OF HIDING IN THE CLOSET!! THE DICHOTOMY!!!!! and i am also interested the confusion that I imagine would come w trying to navigate the formation of a relationship with someone who is fundamentally changing even as you are getting to know each other. to be falling in love with someone WHILE they develop traits that will change them irrevocably?? having to really think about whether you’re in love with the human parts or the monster parts?? not knowing where one ends and the other begins? AND ALL THIS KNOWING IN UR HEART IT WOULD JUST BE EASIER TO LEAVE BUT YOU CANT BRING YOURSELF TO?????? i’m feral. also if anyone read this far i am in love with you

okay (still panting) random headcanons

- once rob gets a handle on transforming she’ll go woof mode just to give nancy the best snuggles

- she also is now extremely invested in any sports that involve balls being thrown. has to be dragged away from tennis courts regularly

- tbh vamp nancy gives me very elinor from first kill vibes as in she would feed off random men at clubs for sure

- rob comes to be her guard dog OBVIOUSLY

- the only downside to this system is that once in a while nancy accidentally picks on someone who is absolutely Rolling and comes home insanely high and distraught and has to be babied until it wears off

- obviously there is a lot of Biting in the bedroom. no further comment

- actually at some point they figure out how to have nancy feed from and [redacted] robin at the same time which i’m sure feels like being on ecstasy especially because robin is now a Certified Whimperer and has to be [i am dragged forcibly out of the room]

- i feel like long term they develop more of a santa clarita diet style of dealing with things? nancy does all the dirty work and rob keeps an eye out and cleans up and when they do actually have a steady supply of blood nancy starts making smoothies and cocktails and shit out of it because she still has Manners
