I find it interesting how both Kendall and Logan depend on drugs in some way (Kendall’s substance abuse, Logan’s reliance on prescribed medications). Though there are clear differences in their relationships to drug use, they are similar in that both of them want to keep it under wraps due to it being perceived by others as a weakness that makes them incompetent, unstable, unpredictable, and unfit to hold a position of power — and so, possibly because they are so personally familiar with this, weaponizing it is their first instinct to undermine each other. Logan spreads lies to the press that Kendall relapsed and was high during the vote of no-confidence. Kendall tells Sandy and Stewy’s PR team what medications Logan is on to foster doubt in Logan’s leadership among the major shareholders. Obviously, Kendall and Logan have different reasons for using drugs and they take this into account based on how best to leverage public opinion. Logan presents Kendall as being erratic, mentally ill, and untrustworthy while Kendall presents Logan as an incapable old man whose mind and body are failing. I also think that in their private lives, controlling each other’s drug use becomes a way to establish a sense of power over each other, even in small ways. In Safe Room, Kendall insists that he be the one to give Logan his pills throughout the day, saying that the previous person performing that job “missed a dose”. He wants any illusion of control he can have, and this feels like control, no matter how insignificant it really is. Logan limits (or tries to limit) Kendall’s drug use by having Greg keep an eye on him at Tom’s bachelor party and, more indirectly, by sending Naomi off the yacht in This Is Not For Tears, displaying his surveillance and command over Kendall’s life.
#something something needing to be seen as godlike and infallible to be trusted as a leader… something something using/needing drugs is#assumed to speak to a deeper fundamental flaw in a person….#something something kendall and logan knowing this from personal experience and seeing it as a tool#obvi drug use linked to addiction and drug use prescribed for physical health problems are treated Very differently and#I’m not trying to say they’re the same at all. but there are certain similarities in how#they’re used by the characters for their own gain#is this anything? idk i don’t really have an overall point but#i think there’s something here#kendall roy#logan roy#succession#succession hbo#ruby (unfortunately) watches succession#addiction tw
