“I fucked our bassist.”

The statement came flying out of nowhere, hitting Eli like a brick to the face. It had his eyes snapping up from his phone to stare at Zack, who was sitting in Eli’s desk chair, while Eli himself was on his unmade bed. They’d been quiet for the past fifteen minutes, with Zack idly twirling a pen between the fingers of his right hand and Eli scrolling through their band’s tags on Twitter. With how late it was, he figured Zack would eventually get up and face the drive back to his flat or would take it upon himself to crash on Eli’s couch. Whichever the drummer chose, Eli was not expecting that statement.

“What?” he asked before fully processing both Zack’s admission and the slightly teasing look he was giving Eli.

“You heard me,” he responded, still twirling the pen between his fingers.

Eli stared at him, a thousand questions fighting to pour forth from his mouth. When? Why? Was Sid any good? What happened? Don’t you have a girl? Who initiated it? Was this some ongoing fling or a one-time thing?

Thankfully, Eli stayed quiet, realizing the drummer wanted him to ask these questions. He wanted Eli to open his mouth and step into the sudden trap he’d laid. He didn’t give Zack the response he wanted, and simply shrugged before saying, “Okay,” and returned his attention to his phone.

“Okay?” Zack echoed, a smile evident in his voice.

“Okay,” Eli repeated again and attempted to give his friend an annoyed look. “What?”

“Nothing,” Zack’s smile only grew as he tossed the pen onto Eli’s desk and folded his hands over his stomach. They resumed staring at each other as if it were a game of chicken, and Eli strategically took the time to come up with another response.

“Congratulations?” he raised an eyebrow, pretending he had no idea why this subject was brought up.
