What is this idea that social media has about characters not being able to be their “own person” if they have a connection to or relationship with other characters?

I’m seeing it everywhere, not just with Star Wars, and I do not understand. It’s mostly focused on female characters, and I assume it’s a really terribly worded argument for women not having to be tied to men in any way in fiction - like literally in any way.

If that is the case, that’s fucking stupid. Characters having relationships with others is one of the main components of storytelling and fiction. It doesn’t matter what gender, orientation, race, whatever the fuck the characters are. It’s how it’s done that matters.

It’s so dumb. These fans are morons and I am so angry and tired.

i'm almost certain i said this in the tags of one of my old posts...or maybe in an ask... but being an este-stan when he's somehow offended the deranged portion of fernando / checo / max / pierre fans (obligatory disclaimer that i know it's only some fans) reminds me of this one lana del rey fan imploring lana to take down something that was offending nicki minaj stans:

Friend. Literally anyone of any gender can do any kind of drag.

Y’all don’t see much of my drag side here, just because I try to keep my tumblr a place where I don’t feel obligated to do self promotion, but my drag name is Jack Rabid and I’ve been a drag king for 13 years.

There’s a quick little obligatory ���how if started vs how it’s going” featuring me actually performing as well as one of my more exciting mugs sans the costume I wore that night vs that good ol’ Fred Durst look every drag king was a victim of in 2010. 🤣

I’m a producer for the Boyz of Austin, which is a drag king troupe in Austin, Texas that has the distinction at 8 years of being currently the second longest running show in the city (second only to Poo Poo Platter, which if you know is kind of legendary). I also used to produce King Fest for the Austin International Drag Festival, and this past April I personally announced over 40 kings in one showcase.

I’m a gay trans man, and for most of my drag career (12 of the 13 years), I identified as nonbinary. Literally. Anyone. Can. Do. Drag.

I’ve worked with a good number of the people in this post (I actually even have a lovely handwritten note from Hugo on my fridge from the time he stayed in my living room on my futon for a few weeks, which btw was his first time out of Aoetearoa, my roommate and I introduced him to Topo Chico, it was incredible. Hugo and I also were on a YouTube competition together waaaay before he was on House of Drag called King Me, which while it crashed and burned did cement us in the bonds of brotherhood for life 🤣). Just by looking it over, I can tell you there is every identity from trans man to nonbinary to cis lesbian contained within just the examples from this post.

In my own city’s scene, we’ve got trans men, afab and amab nonbinary people, hell, a very proudly intersex nonbinary performer (and they’re my drag brother, love you Stellar Manx), and even cis men who all do king drag. I have seen LITERALLY every gender identity you can conceive of in my time working for Drag Fest do king drag. All Drag Is Valid (thanks Paradox Rei), and there are No. Rules. There isn’t a drag council. Just do it.

And just to drive home the “fuck it, so whatever you want with you gender clownery!” I am also a drag queen:

Drag is a very personal art, so what it means to each person is going to be completely different, but it is literally just a critique and performance of gender, and no matter your identity you can take part in that.

I think one of the reasons drag kings aren’t as popular as drag queens, aside from the fact that straight women don’t like us, is that people are uncomfortable acknowledging masculinity as a performance. Like we as a society know that femininity is a performance, with its own costumes and rules. Masculinity is also a performance, and nothing makes that more clear than someone making an exaggeration of it

i would loveeee to do a rewrite of the star wars sequels, one that actually focuses on the main trio AS a trio unit, and has both rey and finn becoming jedi, and kylo stays as the villain, and the original trio are given better arcs (and so on and so on lol). and like, if these are part of the skywalker saga, actually tying them into the first 6 movies better, with lots of use of symbolism and weird force visions and whatnot. i have actually written what i've been calling "finn's prologue" and "rey's prologue" for this whole concept. but everything i would want to do for this rewrite is just so massive, and i truly don't know if i'll ever get around to doing it. but i like to think about what could've been y'know :)

Drabble:

Madeleine rouses from another one of her spontaneous naps. It’s getting a little tiring, always getting the urge to fall asleep, but Florence assures her it’s all part of the recovery process. After all, getting shot at and living to tell the tale isn’t kind to the body. And it makes Florence happy to see her resting, so she lets her body savor the soft cushions of the bed a little while longer.

A little while longer doesn’t last long, because she spots Florence lurking at her door holding a tray full of foods that she carefully selected (and prepared herself, because she knows Florence is conscientious like that). The smells are a cacophony of herbs, seasonings, and fragrances she sorely misses coming off from hospital fare diet, and Florence must have sensed her anticipation because a soft smile forms on her face as she sets it down on her bedside and sits next to her.

Madeleine sits up, or rather leans at Florence’s strong arms as she helps her sit up, and waits patiently as Florence will no doubt mother-hen her. But instead, Florence keeps her arms nestled around her, letting Madeleine tuck her head next to hers -- its a perfect fit, much like almost everything about them really. 

Her lips are brushing at her cheeks, the soft flush of blushing is surely setting upon their faces, but they both pay it no mind. Madeleine can spend an entire day just nestled in Florence’s arms, especially as she whispers sweet words from a pop song and the smell of her cooking wafting in the air.

AEW Full Gear 2021

In which AEW once again proves 'predictable' never precludes 'satisfying,' and every proper ending opens up a world of new possibilities. - There are many great essays on the success of the Hangman Page story and so I hesitate to write my own, and it seems silly to state the obvious -- charting the course from the genesis of AEW, hell, even from the then-anonymous Page being the fall-boy for Bullet Club in ROH, through to the unexpected title match against Jericho at All Out 2019, the uneasy Tag Champ, the insecurity and anxiety caused by his so-called friends in The Elite, the long wandering of the lonesome lush and the rebuilding of the crowd's chosen avatar, this anxious millennial cowboy who is more over than CM fucking Punk because he's gained the power of self-respect? -- it's one of the best wrestling stories I've ever seen. More on the main event later, obviously. - One of the issues with good ol' JR is that he's so iconic as to seem stale or anyway his 'good moments' are almost background noise, he's the soundtrack of pro-wrestling, his gaffes are all we really notice, aside from his catchphrases. He did have some good moments though. ...Hangmin. - No notes about production, really. Pacing of the card was such that I wasn't fatigued by main event time -- I was ready. Full Gear did not beat the brakes off like All Out, but it was a good card, overall.

*Pre-Card Hikaru Shida & Thunder Rosa v Nyla Rose & Jamie Hayter (**) - Theoretically a table-setter for the TBS tournament, the women here get a good amount of breathing room as the only match on the buy-in, but it doesn't really mean anything. I do like that both Shida and Thunder Rosa have the same sort of pragmatic alignment-- they're fundamentally just and will aid any and all faces, but that never rules out viciousness. - I am ready for Jamie's turn on Britt. I am ready for Jamie to show what she's got, she's a main event level talent. - Reflecting on Eddie's passing 16 years ago to the day in the same city... Is there a better use for the beloved backstage Vickie than to be screaming and shrieking ringside? After all this time? Especially given how superb Nyla is when she gets the mic? *Main Card MJF v Darby Allin (****1/2) - Note of appreciation for Max's lilac gear and terrible entrance robe. He knows exactly what he's doing. - I underrated MJF's ring work here, though that's exactly what he wants us to do, he's not going to give the fans flash or a reason to begrudgingly appreciate him. He sells magnificently, and he has a bag of tricks we will never see. No accident either, that his best matches are against Sammy, Jungle Boy and Darby. - This one was the best of the best though. An excellent chemistry between these two, with MJF big and strong enough to really manhandle Darby (backbreaker spots, lovely) and Darby going full human missile. -I understand the logic of the dirty finish from the heel trying to close down their talented rival, but Bryce took too long with the skateboard and was in poor position for the count. Otherwise a 5 star match. The Lucha Bros (C) v FTR for the AEW World Tag Team Championship (***1/2) - I am all the way back in on FTR since they've been back, even if I still have a no better than 50/50 chance of identifying Dax or Cash from each other. The gimmick of not caring to match the pace of the Bucks or Lucha Bros has melted into the background of just being hard working and clinical and not opposed to fancy moves if they get the job done. Which actually suits the Bret Hart mega fans very very well. - Penta El Rainbow Fish gear = fabulous. Alex Abrahantes continues to be a value add out of nowhere, more power to him. - Obligatory comment about the inhuman ability of Rey Fénix, I cannot believe he exists. - ...finish sucked. What was that about? So they pinned the wrong dude because he put on a mask? Miro v Bryan Danielson (***1/2) - Fascinatingly, just the second head to head match between these two, though with an abrupt build due to Miro's replacement status, and what appears to be a legitimate injury limiting The Once-and-Future Redeemer's explosiveness, a certain inevitability crept in early. This is the prototypical Danielson match, working steadily, menacingly, from underneath, finding a strangely realistic path to victory against a bigger and stronger opponent. - Outcome leaves two large questions, 1- re: Miro v God, once again de-railed just outside the station, 2- Bryan Danielson, underdog of all underdogs, is headed to a title match a couple months into his tenure in the promotion.

The Super Kliq v Jurassic Express & Christian Cage (***) - Match-up did not augur an excellent match, Jungle Boy simply isn't on the level (yet?) and Christian's pushing 50, so unless this was going to be an unexpected showcase for Luchasaurus, the Super Kliq was operating at reduced speed, and the Bucks at a reduced speed is generally just less fun. - That said, Christian's timing, especially as someone who moves a little slower now, is impeccable, and thus he still looks so natural and fluid, especially compared to his partners. - Boondoggle at the top of the stage and subsequent back and forth was not a technical or spectacle success and 22 minutes felt greedy, relative to the rest of the card. - Does anyone else feel like Adam Cole isn't exactly best served by tagging with the Bucks? He's their size so not stronger or heavier hitting, but also somewhat slower, less daring and acrobatic. He's a bigger bastard, and he has the presence, but as a wrestler he's lost in the wash next to them? - Has Jungle Boy become a Jungle Man after killing Nick? Probably leads to a rift between him and full-heel Christian if they continue down this road.

Cody Rhodes & PAC v Andrade El Idolo & Malakai Black (*1/2) - Pass. - Kidding, but like, enemy of my enemy leading to this strange carousel where three excellent workers and Cody manage to have a nothing of a match... I mean could it have at least devolved into chaos? - Andrade probably looked best in this one, he has a fascinating affect where he's a cool looking guy who can work with the best of them but it's like he's restrained, his fashion choices are iffy, he doesn't connect with the crowd right away... anyway he's coming into his own in AEW slowly but surely. Dr Britt Baker, DMD (C) v Tay Conti for the AEW Women's World Championship (**1/2) - Tay didn't bring back up, which continues to be a curious strategy against Britt and her goons. A lot of the improvement in Tay's work is attributable to her focusing on the judo and adding high-risk maneuvers to distract from her so-so footwork and striking, she's found her niche and is thriving there, but she was not going to upset the champ on the strength of a half-assed program about... asses? nepotism? - Which is really, I mean, Britt's not a great wrestler, and neither is Tay, and the story is once again nearly MIA, meaning this reign goes on and on until something personal happens. Which is why I see Jamie Hayter as the best option available, even more so than Thunder Rosa. I want something compelling out of this division, the talent is there!

Eddie Kingston v CM Punk (****) - Best match since the curtain jerker, a deeply personal brawl between two greying oversized boys that delivered on the promise of their war of words and left both bloodied and somewhat defeated, somewhat humbled, mostly still angry. - What if Eddie had won? Suppose he's excused because he didn't even really want to win, he wanted to hurt Punk, and he did, he did... I don't know, I have been sort of fascinated with what hasn't happened to Punk, namely the idea that he can't come back and be a world-destroying Best in The World type despite the magic and fervour he can conjure on the mic. But he's back and he's good and he's a problem to be met head on. Is it gauche to speculate when Mox is gonna be back? The Inner Circle v America's Top Team in a Minneapolis Street Fight (**) - I have been skipping these segments for a couple weeks now, I simply do not care for a feud between competing chauvinisms, and am curious who is served by this? Ethan Page and Scorp are taking the backseat to the MMA dudes, but Paige Van Zant seems like the only real prospect there and she wasn't even in in attendance. - Dan Lambert is funny though, and the blue sweatsuited clown was the highlight of this trashfest, right after the recurring commentary bits about the toaster and the bundt pan. - More fun than anticipated/dreaded and a decent palette cleanser in the scheme of things. Finish was... something, I assume it was meant to look like the Popeye Guy (who I am reliably informed is an MMA legend I guess) knocked Jericho clean out. - Do I wish we could've had a Sammy Guevara TNT title match? Maybe, but any given wrestling card is better served by approaching the night as a variety show, and this was fine, really.

Kenny Omega (C) v Hangman Adam Page for the AEW World Championship (****) - So Kenny's injured and has been injured and yet they went all out with this shit. Springboard top rope powerbomb whatever the fuck, Tiger Driver 98, Snap Dragon on the apron, some sort of top rope exploder suplex...slam? - Kenny sold that ringside sign of 'What would Kota think?' deadly well, and you know, that's the obvious reason we weren't going to get a Hangman kick-out of the OWA. And actually, that's good, though... it did leave this match with a bit of a deficit-- Page was rarely on the verge of defeat, rarely looked overmatched, and in the homestretch was stealing Kenny's moves (and by extension, Kenny's old oMegaman gimmick,) and had the champ dead to rights long enough for the Young Bucks to move to intervene and then think better of it. - My main complaint with the Bucks inserting themselves there is that it messed up the camera work and cheapened the final blow of the buckshot lariat and then it was just... over. Kicking out of Kenny's finish would've given that titanic moment, having the Bucks let him win, in a way? A blemish, albeit a small one, for now, until we see how it shakes out in the reign of Hangman Page, World Champion. - Page has held the Carolina Wrestling Federation Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship, but this is obviously his first major singles title, and he is obviously the least heralded of the AEW champions, and definitely the first to have made his star from the ground up in AEW. It feels good, it feels natural.

I hate to be an asshole, but I see this a lot and I'd like your take because while we have differing opinions on some things, your metas are spot on (and I binged half your stories last weekend, oops) and I know you'll be straight up with me on this. What "chemistry" between Zuko and Katara? I keep seeing that and not getting it? The chemistry when he roughed up her grandmother and threatened her village? The chemistry when he tied her to a tree and violated her boundaries? (1/3)

The chemistry when he hired a trained assassin to stalk her good friend and if collateral damage happened, oopsie? The chemistry when he stabbed her in the back after she was nice to him in the crystal catacombs? The chemistry when he demanded that she accept him? Or the chemistry when he showed he didn’t know her at all? The chemistry when both of them were grossed out being thought a couple? Or is it the chemistry when he saved her and Katara couldn’t wait to kiss another guy? (2/3)

I dislike r/eylo from Star Wars fandom. I think it sends the wrong message. But as much as I hate it, there was chemistry there from the first. Rey is attracted to him and Kylo is attracted to her. They don’t want to be, but they are and it plays out in the next two movies. There was none of that in ATLA and I can understand z/ks saying it but other people? What am I missing? Where am I not looking? I’m not even that huge on Katara/Aang but Zuko/Katara chemistry where? (3/3)

Obligatory disclaimer: this is my personal response to anon’s questions and my personal thoughts on Zvtara’s chemistry. I’m not going to put this into the main tags - much less the Zvtara tag! - because while I believe this is a genuine question, I don’t doubt there’s at least one person out there who will misconstrue it as “hate” because the A:TLA fandom is, uh, aggressive in its ship wars lol. However, if I have any Zvtara shippers following me, I encourage you to reblog this post with your own thoughts! Please refrain from sending your commentary on anon unless you’re going to be friendly about it, lol; I like to keep my blog positive and welcoming! Thank you :)

Firstly, I am EXTREMELY flattered that you enjoy my metas so much and binged half my fics!! I was grinning so gleefully as I read that part of your asks,, y’all are too sweet to me. 💛

Okay. Moving on.

So, the main question here seems to be this: What chemistry exists between Zuko and Katara in A:TLA?

Short answer? None, in my opinion.

Longer answer? For all the reasons you outline in your asks, I do not perceive any romantic chemistry between Zuko and Katara within the series run of A:TLA. Note the qualifiers: “romantic” and “within the series run.” I’ll try to break down what I mean!

“no romantic chemistry”

For one, a romantic interest with anyone in the Gaang would have undermined Zuko’s entire redemption arc, full stop. Yes, I mean anyone. For Zuko to have joined the Gaang because of romantic interest* would have been… counterproductive. Zuko joined the Gaang because he realized - to put it very simply - that the Fire Nation was wrong. He realized how he’d been indoctrinated since birth. He realized that he could help the Avatar (instead of trying to, uh, kill him lmao) by teaching him firebending. He realized he could help Aang defeat the Fire Lord and bring peace to the four nations. Zuko realized he could help end the war. He could help break the cycles of violence and abuse that had in part made his own life so miserable. For him to join the Gaang because of romantic interest? Completely takes away from all of that. A key theme of A:TLA is dismantling imperialist power, propaganda, rhetoric, etc. Zuko’s decision to fight against Fire Nation imperialism is crucial to his redemption. He could not have been redeemed without making that choice. Thus, if Zuko had joined the Gaang because of romantic interest, it would have been completely counteractive to his redemption.

(*That is, the relatively popular [? I think?] implication that Zuko and Katara’s moment in “The Crossroads of Destiny” was romantic-coded and thus Zuko should have joined the Gaang at the end of Book 2 because he had romantic interest in Katara and she in him. I genuinely am clueless how people interpret that moment as romantic - like to me it’s honestly heartbreaking! Katara offers Zuko tentative sympathy only for him to stab her in the back minutes later - so if someone would like to share some thoughts, please feel free to do so!!)

On a similar note, for Zuko to take the lightning for Katara at the end of the series because of romantic interest would also undermine his redemption arc. Please note: this does not mean Zvtara shippers cannot interpret the Agni Kai as being romantic-coded. Of course they can! That’s what fanon is for! Transformative works! But in terms of canon, Zuko did not try (and fail, rip) to redirect Azula’s lightning because he was romantically interested in Katara. (I mean, in terms of canon, Zuko and Katara were both romantically interested in other people, too, so… Moot point, lol? But I digress.)

Zuko taking the lightning is about him learning to earn forgiveness and accept unconditional love from his family (both Iroh and the Gaang). It is a selfless act, and it directly parallels Zuko’s selfish act in “The Crossroads of Destiny” to stand silently while Azula strikes Aang with lightning, thus becoming complicit in Aang’s death. The point of his “sacrifice” is that Zuko would have taken the lightning for anyone (and don’t get me wrong - the moment is doubly powerful with Katara, as she’s a primary protagonist!). Zuko did not attempt but fail to redirect the lightning because it was Katara he was protecting; he took it because it was the right thing to do. Zuko has learned to differentiate between “right and wrong” on his own. To at last put others before himself. To make his decision about romantic interest? To make Zuko’s most selfless act in the series (not to mention one of his only 100% selfless acts!) about out-of-the-blue “romantic love”? That not only lessens the impact of his decision, but it is also reductive to Zuko’s entire character and arc. There’s no romantic chemistry there.

Again, of course, fanon exists for purposes such as interpreting Zuko’s failed misdirection of the lightning to protect Katara as romantic. Go wild!! I’m talking strictly about canon.

So that pretty much summarizes why romantic interest with anyone in the Gaang would have been detrimental to Zuko’s redemption, hence why Zuko doesn’t have any canon romantic chemistry in the Gaang. It just ain’t there! It would have screwed over his arc! And again, because of all the reasons you outline, I cannot comfortably interpret any romantic chemistry between Zuko and Katara within the series run of A:TLA. Personally, romantic Zvtara would have been too sudden, too unexpected, and too… well, as I said: uncomfortable. Why would Katara have romantic interest in a guy who’d hurt her so many times? Who she’d only just forgiven? Why would Zuko have romantic interest in Katara, a girl he barely knew for most of the series? Especially when he already had feelings for a childhood friend? I, personally, just don’t get it.

But. You know what Zuko and Katara do have in canon?

A phenomenal platonic bond.

It develops very late, admittedly; Katara has only forgiven Zuko for the last five episodes of the series (5 out of 61… Katara was only on good terms with Zuko for 8% of the series, lmao). But Zuko and Katara are very, very similar personality-wise, so it follows that (eventually) they’d be great friends! Yeah, Zuko acts like an entitled dick for a good portion of “The Southern Raiders” lmao, but he ultimately respects Katara’s decision to spare Yon Rha (love that scene so much 🤧). Katara recognizes that Zuko is trying his best (if sometimes falling short) to redeem himself and earn the Gaang’s trust, and she also understands how - while she is completely justified in her anger! - holding that hatred close to her chest isn’t good for her. So she offers him a third chance (and honestly, Zuko should be forever grateful for that lmao!).

So what can a strong platonic bond lead to? Well, if it’s in your taste, a romantic relationship!

“within the series run”

As aforementioned, I don’t see any romantic chemistry between Zuko and Katara within the series run of A:TLA. I think Zuko has hurt Katara in too many ways - and again, she has only just forgiven him by the end of the show - for there to realistically have been any blossoming romance between them. I think romantic interest for anyone in the Gaang would undermine Zuko’s redemption. I also think M@iko and K@taang are well-implemented romances into A:TLA, so romantic Zvtara would not have fit into the narrative. (Doesn’t mean someone has to ship them!! I just mean they made logical sense and had narrative purpose within canon. That’s all.) But again, Zuko and Katara have a great platonic bond. So while I don’t see romance within the series run, I can understand why people might be attracted to Zvtara in post-canon!

Post-A:TLA (disregarding LOK, which I haven’t even seen lol) Zvtara has some solid potential. I’m personally intrigued by the idea of how they’d navigate their relationship amidst all the politics! Basically, any relationship with a strong platonic bond can have potential for “more.” That’s why people ship T@ang, that’s why people ship Zvkaang, Zvkka, M@ilee, etc. So while Zvtara may not have romantic chemistry within the show - in my opinion! - they’ve got one of my favorite platonic bonds, so I can totally get people wanting to explore that bond in post-A:TLA and possibly translating it to romance.

So for some people, then, it might be less about “chemistry” in A:TLA itself, but more how their relationship could grow and change after the end of the series!

Quick sidebar: I mentioned that while I do not interpret the final Agni Kai as romantic, I’m fine when other people do. It’s fanon! Ain’t no big thing! But also, Katara has forgiven Zuko by that point. I, personally, am not comfortable with reading any of Zuko and Katara’s TSR-and-earlier interactions as romantic because of the imbalanced power dynamic. Example: I don’t think Zuko tying Katara to a tree and manipulating her with her mother’s necklace was romantic, and I don’t like the resulting implications when people do treat it as such. Zuko was still so indoctrinated by Fire Nation propaganda… Yeah, from Book 1 to about halfway through Book 3, I personally don’t feel comfortable shipping Zuko with anyone outside of the Fire Nation. Pre-redemption Zuko was not the most fun person to be around if you were non-Fire Nation.

But as I’ve said, these are all just my opinions! Again, if I have any Zvtara shippers following me, please feel free to reblog with your own thoughts! I would love to know where the idea comes from that Zvtara had chemistry within A:TLA, since I personally don’t see any romantic vibes (though platonic chemistry, of course, abounds.)

(For the record, I don’t know anything about Star Wars, which is why I haven’t brought up R.eylo, lol.)

TL;DR - To me, there isn’t any canon romantic chemistry for Zvtara. Narratively, I think it would undermine Zuko’s arc. Logically, because of how Zuko treated Katara for 92% of the series, I personally cannot interpret any of their interactions as romantic. But their platonic bond? Beautiful!! Thus, if people want to explore post-A:TLA, fanon Zvtara, I am all for it.
