Of All The Trades (Part 1)

Summary: How Jack and Abby first meet.

Jack tried their best for this. They quietly chided themselves in 'why did you think taking a computer science course was a good idea' in the back of their mind. It had seemed like a good idea at the time. They might need the knowledge for website development and editing in the future.

They pinched their fingers at the bridge of their nose and sighed softly. Jack picked up their books and stuff them into their back. Class was over.

Now, it was time they got home. They needed to make haste in getting back to meet their new roommate. Jack had rented a small half house down in the college town while they went to their college and the price had been a bit... too much. A roommate was needed and someone was coming early this morning to start bringing their things in to the extra room. They dreaded it a bit because they weren't the most social, but they could manage. The emails and phone calls told them said new roomie wasn't all bad.

As they tried to leave the classroom, they were stopped by a group of three women who stood outside the classroom and blocked the door. Jack stood by, looking clearly conflicted in asking them to move. The three of them were all chatting softly and smiling at each other. It'd be rude to interrupt, right...?

"But good luck on your website, I'm sure you'll be fine! You're good at computers and design," one of the women said, a sandy blonde crown of curly hair adorned her head.

The redhead with a long bob cut she was talking to smiled sheepishly and waved her hands in the air. "Stop! I'm just doing my best, don't kiss up to me," she teased.

Jack tried to clear their throat softly to try and get the girls to take notice and move out of the way.

The two girls who had started the conversation, included the blonde, and they both gave them sideways glances. Their appearance and goth clothing style seemed to throw them off a bit.

"Oh!" the redhead smiled and gently tugged on her friend's arm. "Move out of the way, Celia, people need to leave." She flashed them a smile as she pulled her friend free of the doorway. "Sorry about that!"

They tried to flash a wary smile as they dodged around them. It probably looked more like a grimace to the three friends. Jack huffed inwardly and hurried themselves along. No need to make it awkward.

Hurry back to the flat, get a little cleaned up, and meet the new roommate. They tried not to focus on that awkward confrontation as they hurried up to take long strides and hurry themselves along.

Jack sighed deeply as they finished putting the dishes in the tiny kitchen away. The house they rented wasn't much more than a small cabin, but it was home away from home.

They felt a nervousness in their gut at having to meet a new roommate. It wasn't a bad thing, but they were nervous about having the idea of sharing a space with someone they barely knew. Most of their friends already had dorms or apartments. They couldn't convince one of them to move in with them. They sighed deeply and finished putting away their two mugs.

"It'll be fine, Jack," they attempted to reassure themselves. It wasn't going to be bad.

As if reading their mind, someone knocked on the front door. Jack scrubbed their hands on the black pants they wore to get rid of the remaining water on their hands from washing and drying dishes.

"Coming!" they called.

Jack made their way to the door and steeled themselves with a deep breath and brushing some hair from their face. Then, they opened the door.

In front of them stood one of the girls from earlier. The redhead who had chastised her friends for standing in the doorway of their classroom. She had fairly bright red hair and other than that oddity, she was... fairly normal. And fairly cute. At least normal by their standards. A little too normal, maybe. Compared to them and their goth hair cut, piercings, and dark clothes, she was normal. It gave him a small relief to see her so average, even if it was a little odd.

"Hi- oh!! You! I met you earlier!" she smiled brightly at him. The girl set one of her bags down to shake his hand. "My name's Abigail, we talked on the phone to rent a room?"

They tried not to laugh and a smile quirked at their lips.

"Nice to meet you," their voice was low and shy, absolutely the opposite of their appearance.

"Thanks for inviting me, I can't wait to get to know you." Abigail smiled so bright again and they led her inside. "Now, where can I put my stuff?"

This was going to be the beginning of what they hoped was a decent friendship.
