Last summer, music fans in the city and suburbs got the sad news that Val Camilletti, proprietor of the famed Oak Park record store Val's Halla had passed away. Her encyclopedic knowledge of all musical genres (and being a big Elvis fan) endeared her to many looking for music. She opened her record store in the early 1970s on South Boulevard but later moved to Harrison Street. This month a new mural was created to honor the Oak Park resident and beloved business owner. The mural of her unmistakable smiling face is not far from where her original store was on South Boulevard. The artwork is part of the mini mural series that takes up space under the Oak Park train tracks. It was painted by @joeabboreno. This week will have marked the 99th birthday of Henrietta Lacks, the African American woman whose life changed science, but under controversial circumstances. In 1951, Lacks, a young Baltimore mother, complained of bleeding and doctors at Johns Hopkins discovered she had a large tumor on her cervix. Samples of her cancer cells were examined but taken without her permission. Neither she nor her family were paid for the work that came as a result of the study of her cells, known as HeLa cells. Those cells were dubbed “immortal” because they continued to thrive, leading to many scientific advancements for drugs treating polio, leukemia, Parkinson’s among others. Lacks died in 1951 at the age of 31 and was buried in an unmarked grave. According to the Henrietta Lacks Foundation, while the cells were of great importance to researchers there were “damaging consequences for her family, many of whom often struggled to get access to the very health care advances their mother’s cells helped make possible.” Her life was the subject of a 2010 best seller “The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks” and an HBO movie based on the book, starring Oprah Winfrey.
