Q+A: Crooked Royals
Firstly, where did the name ‘Crooked Royals’ come from? We get asked this a lot and unfortunately, it’s not very interesting we played around with a ton of really ‘meh’ names and finally came up with “Crooked Royals” as a hybrid name stolen from two specific bands. If any of you reading this can guess those two specific bands right, we’ll send you a picture of Christian dressed as a chicken.
How would you guys describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before? Honestly, we don’t know, we’ve tried to put a label on it, I guess Metalcore is the boring answer? We’re just trying to make something using different inspirations from all waves of music that we like the sound of and hoping others might like it in metal form.
This is your guys second release, the first EP being ‘Intertwine’ - how do you feel that you guys have grown between the two EP’s? Working on the first EP felt like a fairytale especially with the story that surrounds it. But when we got back to New Zealand we felt like all of us needed to step up our game in every aspect in order for this fairytale to mean something. So, to answer the questions, we have grown in every possible direction. We’re more competent musicians, we’re better at creating a more dynamic sound, Lee even manages to make it to most practices now as well!
How did you guys all meet? Tinder…essentially. Conor, Jake and Lee all met via Nzbands and had a band going for a little while where they then met Christian and Keane (then Kindred Vice) through the local music scene and we’ve all hated each other ever since. A true 21st century romance.
Walk us through your typical song creating process - is it always similar? Or do you find it changes with each creation? It never ends the same, sometimes Lee and Christian write the lyrics together, sometimes one of them write all the lyrics, but a songs inception is always the same. We don’t hear from Jake for a couple of months and then suddenly, he drops a banger of a demo seemingly out of nowhere! We don’t know what he does (ie. How many children he sacrifices) but it works. Keane adds his drums and Connor lays a fat bassline down and there we have it, a beautiful car crash of sounds that we call a Crooked Royals song.
What’s one song off ‘Rumination’ that you guys are super proud of? Run us through what the song means to you guys? That’s tough because literally every one of us would name you a different track as individuals. But collectively I think we would all say we are super proud of the title track “Rumination”. It was the first song we ever wrote for [Rumination] and it was fresh off the emotions we felt from recording [Intertwine]. We were all inspired to try and do something different and experiment a bit with this new-found confidence we had as musicians. Every time we play the song at practice or live that emotion is still there.
What do you guys think the best thing about the local scene is? The comradery for sure, so many bands connect and hang out socially as well as playing gigs together and supporting each other, feels like one big family! Love you Morty xoxo
And what’s one thing you’d love to see change/improve? With the local scene? Nothing, everyone is fantastic! With the band? Honestly, we would like to see a change in gas prices so we can improve our ability to get out to more people around NZ!
If you could collaborate with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be? Again, that would be tough because every one of us as individuals would have a different Answer. Christian would probably say Atticus Ross. Conor would say Eddie Vedder-Pearl Jam. Jake would say Synyster Gates-A7X. Lee would say Tom Searle-Architects (RIP). And Keane would say Corey Taylor-Slipknot/Stone Sour.
If you could start one dumb rumor about the band - what would it be? Our drummer Keane is Zayne Malik’s metalhead brother.
Lastly, convince our readers in only 3 words to come check you out next time you’re playing in their town? Christians dadbod dancing

Quick Fire
The one song I wish I wrote is… Christian: Return to the Earth – Contortionist
Three things I can’t live without are… Jake: Guitar, guitar, guitar
Phones out, or phones away when watching a gig... Lee: Schrodinger’s Phones. A state at which phones are in and out simultaneously
If I held a world record it would be for… Keane: The amount of time insults and physical abuse is hurled at a human being. That person being our singer Christian.
My first memory of loving music is… Connor: Of course, discovering your first band you love that sends you into a Limewire frenzy is up there (if you don’t know, you are too young), but above everything probably the first time you have a jam with your mates. Thinking you are the shit covering your favorite songs. Keeping in mind you sound like dog shit because you just started playing but hey. You love it.
The song of mine that I am the proudest of is… Everyone: Rumination
One band I could listen to on repeat forever is… Christian: Lindsay Lohan’s band from the movie Freaky Friday. Pure inspiration.
The ideal environment for me to create music in is… Jake: Anywhere you want it to be. You don’t know where inspiration and the creative juices can hit you. It can be a quite space in your house, while you’re with the bros having a drink, on your couch while having on a cold rainy day with a cup of tea, a train station in India. You make your tunes anywhere you want.
If I could have any two bands open for me, they would be… Everyone: Veil Of Maya and Architects. To be fair no way in hell they would ever open for us, we would open for them. We just would love the chance to play a show with them.
