I kind of really don't like how the Risorgimento in Hetalia is framed as a thing done solely by Veneziano and how it supposedly came as a surprise to Romano. First of all, it was kind of a long process, so it's been boiled down way too much, but I can forgive that because it's meant to be funny.

What I can't really forgive is that Romano is made obsolete in the comic, despite how influential the South actually was in making the Risorgimento happen. Just based on the Wikipedia page (I don't have the energy to go through an actual history book rn), there was the Carboneria formed in Southern Italy, not to mention that the unification happened under the House of Savoy, which admittedly was northern, but they first gained the title of king when they took over Sicily, and later exchanged it for Sardinia. Previously, Savoy ruled over duchies, but it was first when they gained the title King of Piedmont-Sardinia they started to consider uniting Italy. Those two are just the most obvious examples, but there's plenty more if you look into it.

It's not so much that South Italy did not want the Risorgimento or had no hand in it, it's rather that the results of it ended up being a betrayal, not just to the South, but anyone who was not Piedmontese – however, that betrayal was felt especially by the South. At least that's how I'm reading it. I'm sure I still ended up simplifying it a lot, and if anyone wants to expand on this, please do so.

General opinion: I stan him tons. Gotta love. He's great and I honestly don't like how some people portray him. So sad, Alexa play despacito.

Veneziano:

Sexuality hc: Pansexual or aromantic pansexual.

Gender hc: Nonbinary!

A ship: A, you guessed it, lot. I like itapan most besides gerita. Though I don't ship them often at all.

A brotp: Besides them with Romano, Platonic. Gerita. (Especially when they're both nonbinary aro disasters sign me up)

A notp: I don't got any.

Random hc: Ok, ok so this is a joke I had with a friend once. It's just funny and the first thing that came to mind. So they will put themselves in weird, potentially dangerous situations, but not because they're self destructive or anything. Just because they want to feel the most true emotions possible to make their art more expressive XD.

General opinion: I love them. They're great. As a character with a lot lf interpretations, it's hard to agree on stuff sometimes, but I love them regardless.

Romana:

Sexuality hc: Bisexual with a women lean.

Gender hc: Male to female totally and forever thanks Yuki.

A ship: I,,,, lot. Though pls, nyo framano or nyo germano.

A brotp: Her with her sister is the greatest, but I also love her with Nyo Spain because I'm soft.

Random hc: She's more realistic than Lovino and less of a complete romantic. She's still soft though and has wild dreams and ambitions. She's just more likely not to randomly fall for gorgeous sounding opera singers i guess XD. (Though that cute genderfluid model over there??? Holy fuck she's gay.)

General opinion: I love her,,,,, a lot. Like a lotta lot.

Veneziana:

A ship: Generally, I love nyo itapan and nyo rusita. It's so cute!! Also nyo ausita, tho that can have it's mehs.

Random hc: She's femme in build but dresses like a butch. She loves fashionable masculine clothing mostly for how comfortable it is but damn does she love fancy clothes on other people. She's big gay.

How to Pronounce 'Gnocchi'

Potato pasta sounds strange, so it's no wonder that it's called something interesting like gnocchi. You can read the word 'gnocchi' and get away with sounding it out however you please, but how should you say it when you order it at a restaurant? Just point to the dish on the menu? The way you pronounce it may have a lot to do from where you're from, which is why the proper pronunciation is often debated. You can hear an Italian say nyohk-kee or nyuh-kee, and an American say noh-kee or nyawk-kee...does anyone really know how to pronounce gnocchi?

The word gnocchi in Italian likely comes from the term nocca, meaning "knuckle." Gnocchi is named for its shape, and it is traditionally made by rolling a piece of dough against a textured wood board. It's simply named and simply made, too. The basic ingredients include water, potato flour, and breadcrumbs or eggs mixed together into a dough. Other variations of the dish may include milk, ground almonds, ricotta, and corn meal.

Gnocchi can be found all over the world in many forms, but it is most often associated with Italy. Every region has its own unique gnocchi recipe. In Rome, for example, a traditional gnocchi dish is gnocchi alla Romana, which is a baked (rather than boiled) pasta dish stuffed with cheese, butter, and milk. Similar to crepes and a little black dress, gnocchi is a staple to any Italian menu. In addition, it can be dressed up or down—you can find plain gnocchi on the kids menu or seasonal butternut squash gnocchi.

How to Pronounce Gnocchi

Just like every region in Italy has its own unique gnocchi recipe, each region of Italy has its own variation of sounding out g-n-o-c-c-h-i. It's like having a Southern accent versus a Midwestern accent. Some roll the "gno-" off the roof of the mouth, resulting in a "nyo" pronunctiation. Others simply say "no," which in my opinion is much less exciting. The second half of the word,         "-cchi," is consistently pronounced like "key." So, the real aspect of pronunciation that's up for debate is the first half of the word, a simple three letters. 

The Italian language is one of the romance languages, which is associated with passion, rich culture, and suave. The underlying suave and smooth sound of Italian is why pronouncing "gnocchi" with a fancy "nyo" sound seems most fitting. Not only is it interesting to hear, it makes you sound like a pasta connoisseur. Repeat after me: nyoh-kee. Don't believe me? The Oxford English dictionary supports this pronunciation as well. 

There are numerous answers to the question of how to pronounce gnocchi, but the one that seems the most interesting and true to the Italian language is the pronunctiation with a rolling "nyoh" sound. There is a wide spectrum of accents throughout the world, even just in Italy alone, so it is unfair to say that there is just one right way to say it. However, if you're stuck asking yourself how to tell the waiter you want the small pasta rolls made with potato flour, I suggest nyoh-kee.

about the “Romana” thing

So... hot take spamano gang, I have seen a lot of Nyo!Spamano in which people refer to Nyo!Romano as Romana and I just... don’t really like it? more like I understand why is there but come on, how about just simply Roma? I know it gets too close to grampa Rome and in spanish it is actually the same, but I always thought of Romano as the direct heir of Rome so... yeah (like c’mon Romano=from rome, it’s obvious and it’s there and my baby is the eldest so there is that, leave my hc alone ;-;) it’s just that to me Roma sounds so much better that Romana and my baby deserves the best of the best and I don’t know if it happens in other pairings with Romano bc I just read spamano but well

Veneziana- Alice Vargas

This chick is a badass. Unlike her male counterpart, and even her sister, she's a hard worker who doesn't stop until she gets things done (stemming from the common stereotype that Northern Italians are serious hard workers). She doesn't expect others to work as hard as her, however, and even likes when people let her take initiative. She's an emotional, cheerful, and protective person who lives to and for love. She likes caring for people and acts like a big sister. She has a close relationship with her actual sister as well. She's strong-willed and stubborn, with a love for debate—peaceful or otherwise. A bit of a tease, she likes to make jokes and flirt with others to see their reactions. She's a little rough around the edges and accident prone, but she'll get the job done. She works off of random spikes of energy rather than a scheduled approach, and often has great bouts of inspiration. She's more tomboy-like than most, especially her sister. She gets along well with Germany, Prussia, and America as a result.

Romana- Chiara Vargas

You know that one chill friend who could kick your ass if you cross a certain line? That's Chiara. She really doesn't care much for work, and though she'll get things done if she needs to, she usually lets Veneziana deal with things (not that Vene minds one bit). Unlike Romano, though similar to Veneziano, she is artistic and often locks herself away for days at a time when inspiration strikes. She's profane and blunt, though she tries not to be impolite. She gives off a strong, dominant air, and she's earned the respect of many people. She's fairly laid-back and calm and she tries to avoid conflict. Sometimes, though, she manages to get pissed off enough to throw her chill nature aside and put you in your place. When this happens, she can get quite bossy (inherited from the Maiden of Eternal Sunshine herself). Spain is like a mother to her, and she's very family oriented. She has a love for clothing, designing, and hair products. Looking good can raise her confidence, mood, and energy so much she's it's almost unsettling. She's really close with her sister, they tend to do a lot of stuff together, and she's really protective over her.

Japan- Honda Sakura (本田桜)

Sakura is a Yamato nadeshiko (ideal Japanese woman) type of person, who's wise, loyal, mature, humane, and domestic with a bit of hidden childishness—a blossom by appearance and a wildflower at heart. She's really passive and tends to hang on the sidelines, but she can make herself heard if she wants. She tends to daydream—usually, being the himejoshi she is, about shoujo ai—and yearns for an adventure. She's often called "Sakucchi" (a typical Japanese nickname for a Sakura) or "Mameko" (literally meaning bean child). She has a not-so-secret love for all things cute, and enjoys gardening and tending to her pets. She's a closet Otaku and a little obsessed with foreign culture, both thing's she has in common with America. She's diligent, polite, and sweet, but tends to hide her problems away from others and often times herself. Sometimes she gets self-conscious about her height, and has been caught on multiple occasions trying on Romana's heels. She's admitted to admiring the west and western culture on multiple occasions. Though she's quite shy and antisocial at times, she really wants to have more friends and admires America's socialization skills.

Germany- Monika Beilschmidt

Monika is a habitual worrier. She's the one who goes out with everyone as the designated driver and only cracks open a single beer once she gets home. Prussia, Veneziana, and America are constantly trying to get her to loosen up and have fun, but she always starts worrying something will go wrong if she's not on watch. Occasionally, however, she lets up, usually when she's doing something she enjoys. She's a bit on the quiet side and speaks as little as possible, unless she's lecturing. She's a bit self-conscious about her masculinity and height and it surprises people when she does girly things. She wants to do more feminine things sometimes, but doesn't know how to go about it. Once Romana gave her a makeover, and she was really happy for a few days. She has a weakness for sweets and loves dogs. She often takes on the role of a babysitter for her friends, despite being quite young and lacking experience, and tries to keep everyone out of trouble. Though everyone exasperates her, she has a certain amount of respect and understanding for them, and really cares about her friends. Unlike her male counterpart, she doesn't need a manual to do much and is quite lax on the rules, but she's still really socially awkward. Being a peace maker, she's often annoyed by Veneziana's tendency to fight and need to win. She likes more mellow activities, such as reading and biking, and likes spending time with Prussia and Austria.

Prussia- Julia "Julchen" Beilschmidt

A "maga amazing" girl with an oversized ego, she can be a bit over baring, but she's also better at understanding people and giving advice than her male counterpart. She's serious, book-smart, and hard-working, but it's hidden under her wild nature and strong will. She believes her younger sister, Germany, is the cutest thing and calls her Schwest. She's optimistic and tries to make the best of her situations. She's a bit of a clean freak and enjoys cleaning for others, despite her the lazy air she gives off. She seems to have an interest in skylines and interior design. She often gets in fights with Austria, but they usually make up almost immediately. She likes to listen to Austria play violin and has a nack for singing. She's modest and humble when it's called for, and doesn't give compliments often—which makes them all the more meaningful. She seemingly speaks bird(evident by her constant whistle conversations with Julchick) and is quite the animal whisperer in general. She's actually fine being alone and prefers it sometimes. She has a habit of blasting German rock as loud as possible, though Monika is used to it at this point.

Spain- Isabel Carmen Fernández Carriedo

The epitome of style, Isabel has a sophisticated air about her. Her hair, clothes, house, and things are well kept and she doesn't like losing or breaking things. People seem a bit surprised when they learn she has a bit of a wild side, as she never seems to get dirty and likes to keep things orderly, but she does have a passion for sports and dance. Despite all of this, she isn't actually in the best place politically or financial, but she has a "fake it till you make it" attitude. The happiness and comfort of others has always been a main priority of hers, but she is the boss and she'll make that known. As one of the oldest European nations, she believes she should be respected and admired. She likes to enjoy herself, whether she's relaxing or partying, and enjoys wine and wine based drinks. She always has a fan on her for some reason and can do quite a lot of things in heels. She's fiery, loud, passionate, and rather funloving, but she can become serious quickly and doesn't like being disobeyed. Family, tradition, and religion are everything to her and she's rather protective, affectionate, and clingy.

“Fuck off,” Romana grumbled, rolling her shoulder back to shake off the brief nudge she felt. “It’s too damn early for this.”

However, as soon as she settled back down again, she felt another pat at her shoulder over the covers. 

“I said fuck off.” 

Another pat. 

Romana finally let out a loud groan as she lifted her head up from her pillow to send a harsh glare over her shoulder. “What the hell do you-” 

Instead of the annoyingly familiar sight of Spain’s eager grin, Romana found herself face-to-face with a cat she had never seen before in her life, a curious bundle of tan and white fur with a rosary draped comfortably around its neck in the place of a collar.

She stared at the cat. 

It stared back. 

Romana blinked once and then reached out to poke at its face, where almost immediately upon contact, it started to purr hard enough to make her whole hand vibrate.

“What the fuck?” 

Romana jolted up, the sheets tumbling back down to her legs as she screeched. 

“Huh?” Spain shot up on the other side of the cat, messy brown hair sent flying across her face as she swiveled her head around to look around the room. “What happened?” 

“What the fuck do you mean what happened?” Romana snapped back, gesturing wildly towards the stray cat between them. “There’s a fucking cat in our house!” 

Spain’s confused look didn’t die down until she glanced down herself, which made the sleepy panic fade away into a completely adoring smile. 

“Ah, it’s so cute!” she cooed, reaching down to pet it and laughing with delight when it rolled over to let her ruffle at its stomach. “And friendly too!” 

Romana sputtered in disbelief, looking back and forth between Spain and the new cat, neither of which seemed to have any problem with the fact that this was a completely new scenario for both of them. 

“Spain.” 

Spain glanced back up with an easy smile, moving her hand up to start rubbing at the splotch of tan fur on the cats head. “Hmm?” 

“There’s a cat in our house.” 

“And?” 

“We don’t have a fucking cat.” 

Spain paused, freezing in place for a moment before she looked back down at the cat thoughtfully. 

“Oh yeah.” 

Romana buried her face into her palms with a groan. “Why do you have to be so goddamn stupid?” 

Instead of a human voice answering that question, a loud yowl from the floor was her response instead. 

She whipped her head back up, peering over the edge of the bed to see roughly seven pounds of sheer rage condensed into a caramel brown cat that hissed right back at her.

That was enough of that. 

“Oh no,” she snapped, kicking the covers off of her legs. “Absolutely fucking not.”

“They’re not hurting anyone!” Spain protested, the cat by her side now sprawled out onto the bed. “Can’t they just stay for the morning?”

“No.” Romana leaned over and scooped up the still purring cat, who seemed completely content with being draped over her arms like a towel. “I’m not dealing with this right now.” 

As soon as she set her foot on the floor though, the other cat darted out to swipe at her ankle. 

“Fucking-!” The cat retreated to the corner of the room, where it immediately puffed back up and hissed at her again. “Fuck you too!” 

She fumbled out of bed, swinging the mass of cat out with her as she turned back to glare at Spain.

“Get that one and put it outside,” she bit out, glaring down at the unbothered cat when it reached up to rub its head against her arm. “It’s too early for this shit.”

She didn’t stop to see if Spain followed her orders, focused on hauling the vibrating lump of tan and white fur in her hands out the door instead. 

It dropped gracefully to the ground once she made it outside, although it quickly tried to dart back in past her feet. 

“You stay out here,” she snapped, crouching down to push its face back until it was out of the door’s reach. “I don’t know how the fuck you got in, but you better not come back, you hear me?” 

It let out a cheerful chirp as it sat down right on her doorstep, fluffy speckled brown tail swishing happily against the stone. 

She narrowed her eyes.

“Little bastard.” 

Romana slammed the door right in the cat’s face and felt absolutely no remorse for it as she stormed her way back to her bedroom, exhausted and irritated beyond belief for what was way too early in the morning.

“Get the-” Romana paused, eyes narrowing as she stared at Spain. “What.” 

“It purred!” Spain looked back up at her with the now hissing cat in her arms, sporting several new angry red claw marks up and down her arms in stark contrast to the ecstatic look on her face. “Roma, it was purring!” 

She leaned down to rub her face against its fur with a bright smile and immediately recoiled back when it clawed at her cheek. 

“Ow!” Spain glanced back up at Romana with a pleading look, now complete with a new set of scratches running down her face. “I swear it was purring earlier!” 

Romana looked at Spain, and then the cat, and then Spain again before she turned right back around and left. 

She fully intended on writing off the past fifteen minutes as a fever dream and not even God could stop her now, stray cats and idiot girlfriends be damned.
