And Just Like That...is Cringeworthy, Not Binge-worthy

I have a new guilty pleasure: no, it’s not Riverdale, nor is it the umpteenth season of The Bachelor. It’s And Just Like That…, the reboot of Sex and the City starring Sarah Jessica Parker and her (mostly intact) group of gal pals as they help her move on from the death of her husband, John James “Mr. Big” Preston (Chris Noth). Where Sex and the City was a fun romp exploring the lives of Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) through singlehood and coupledom, And Just Like That is strictly a cringe watch, not a binge watch, as the reboot attempts to correct some errors, including the lack of diversity, of the original show.

Over the course of the first season, we are introduced to Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte’s new friends, all of whom are a part of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community (Kim Cattrall did not reprise her role as Samantha due to an ongoing feud with SJP). There’s Charlotte’s new friend Lisa Todd-Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker), Miranda Hobbs’ hip professor Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman), Carrie’s podcasting partner Che (Sara Ramirez), and her realtor Seema Patel (Sarita Chodbury). All of these actors are wonderful additions to the cast–it’s just too bad the show squanders the opportunity to flesh out the characters beyond what they look like or identify as. 

As Deborah Willis discusses in the documentary Through a Lens Darkly, it’s important to have representation. She explains that “Black people were subjects for the photographers, but none of the photographers were African American.” The original Sex and the City had an overwhelmingly white writers room, and it seems And Just Like That...is making up for it with the introduction of BIPOC women behind the camera in both writing and directing positions. But despite the attempts at increasing diversity off-camera, that doesn’t mean the characters’ escapades at welcoming diversity on camera are any less cringeworthy. 

In the pilot alone, Lisa is referred to by Charlotte’s husband Harry as “Black Charlotte;” later, Charlotte and Harry attempt to befriend more Black people after fearing Lisa and her husband will be the only non-white people at their dinner party.  

Miranda’s attempts to befriend her professor may be more awkward. When Miranda first meets Nya, she spends too much time complimenting her braids, over-explaining that her compliment had “nothing to do with it being a Black hairstyle” and then insinuating she signed up for her class just because Nya is Black.

This whole video is just one giant face palm.

But the worst offender might just be Che Diaz, a Latinx nonbinary comedian who has become the subject of multiple think pieces. What should be an innovative character highlighting the joys of representation becomes the most annoying human imaginable, an unfunny comedian who introduces themselves to Miranda by shotgunning a joint into her mouth at a bar. Miranda’s coming-out story should be a point of pride, mirroring the real-life story of Cynthia Nixon’s own coming-out; instead, Miranda’s plot feels like an insult to her ex, Steve Brady (really the last good character on this show) and an embarrassing attempt at understanding real-life coming out stories in the queer community. 

And that’s the problem with And Just Like That: it doesn’t understand the people they are trying to write about. Sex and the City was largely white and heterosexual: while they did have excellent recurring gay characters in Mario Cantone’s Anthony Marentino and the late Willie Garson’s Stanford Blatch, the core four’s gay panic is unmistakable. In one episode, Carrie dumps a man because he is bisexual; in another, Samantha dates a woman, only to break up with her because they talk too much, which perpetuates stereotypes regarding female relationships.

Which is why And Just Like That…is so disappointing. It had the opportunity to create a new, updated spin on single life in NYC with perspectives that weren’t just white women; instead, it chose to make the white women awkward, Karen-like stereotypes that don’t know how to handle diversity and instead sound like soundbites that could be used on Fox News. What was once a hip show touting the female experience all set to a jazzy theme tune has now turned into a cringeworthy watch that makes you wince every time they even try to tackle a relevant topic. As Ronald Takaki explains in A Different Mirror, authenticity of experience is important, and AJLT does not feel like any of the characters’ lives are being explored in an authentic way. The struggle to “let America be America,” or to depict our multicultural history accurately, has been very real, and it’s only exacerbated more by the gratingly frustrating attempts for AJLT to be diverse without making diversity awkward. I can only hope that AJLT will learn to be more comfortable in depicting diversity as something incredible, not incredibly awkward, but 2 seasons in, I find myself even more let down with every passing episode.

Suffice to say, And Just Like That…I’ve given up on this show ever trying to tackle a relevant topic in a fashionable manner. At least we can all look forward to Samantha’s cameo in the season 2 finale. Maybe she’ll have something good to say.

Some art :D

First three are just 3 variations of the same thing I did today bc I was relistening to TAZ Balance while working on it and liked the groove I got into. I did that trick where you smudge the lineart to give it a painted look; it was fun. I really do miss the wholesome father-son moments between Mumbo and Grumbot in FW, but I guess I only have myself to blame lol

Fourth one is Mumbo. Not sure what the context is, but I was practicing lineart and lighting. I was watching a bunch of D’Angelo Wallace while doing that one last week.

The one after it is Joe Hills walking a doggo. It was for lineless practice, and I was watching Suite Life of Zack and Cody (this was a few weeks ago, at the start of Christmas break)

Sixth one is Grumbot but in that kind of cute aesthetic style? I was doing different art styles and ended up doing that one. It turned out p nicely.

Seventh one is Aleighnya from Featherweight, just in case anyone was wondering what her design was. Her tail’s a tiefling tail, and her horns are similar to branches. I love her so much, what a Scottish queen. (and for reference, it’s pronounced “ah-ley-nya”...like Aleyna...but nya) :3

Eighth one is Professor Beak, but if he was human. Not much to say other than that I love him. I remember drawing this one while watching some Kurtis Conner, and being super sad that they don’t sell the Minecraft parrot plush anywhere anymore except for on British Amazon, but shipping is like, $20 dollars ;v;

Ninth is Doctor Clockwork, using a colour palette I found called “Father Time”, which was super fitting and matched his aesthetic already. I think I was rewatching some old Danny Gonzalez videos. I did it on the same day that I did the aesthetic-style Grumbot.

Finally, we have a Grumbot that I drew today while watching some movie with Nick Cage in it. I’m really happy with the style of it :D

Dulu, saya sangat tertarik mengambil mata kuliah Data Mining karena dengan melihat data tentang jutaan orang, saya menjadi sadar bahwa saya ini kecil. 

Belakangan, saya mencoba mengambil beberapa kelas online tentang Psikologi. Motivasinya untuk menguatkan kemampuan storytelling sekaligus untuk modal riset di kampus. Teknologi Game itu multidisiplin. Ketika kita ingin menerapkan Gamifikasi di satu bidang, akan bermanfaat kalau kita paham sedikit tentang tingkah laku manusia.

Hal yang saya rasakan ketika saya mengambil kelas psikologi adalah, alih-alih saya merasa tertarik menebak orang, saya jadi merasa perlu punya awareness untuk memilih kacamata dalam memandang permasalahan. Kapan saya melihat manusia sebagai data, kapan saya melihat manusia sebagai personal.

Di awal-awal mengambil kelas psikologi sosial, materinya adalah tentang konsep diri. Dalam buku teks yang saya baca, ada satu konsep yang disebut dengan Spotlight Effect. Membaca ini, saya langsung teringat David Foster Wallace dengan This Is Water-nya. Kayaknya semua yang berkaitan sama hal kayak gini bakal ngebawa saya ke David Foster Wallace.

Mengingat bahwa kita kecil akan membuat kita pelan-pelan meraba lensa yang tepat dalam melihat permasalahan. Satu quote lagi yang saya ingat dari text book yang saya baca:

There is an objective reality out there. But we always view it through the lens of our belief and values.

Manusia itu sangat sulit menjadi objektif dan adil. Yang bisa mereka usahakan adalah memilih sebanyak mungkin lensa dan memilih lensa yang (semoga saja) mendekati kebenaran dan membawa kebaikan.

Selama Franklin Delano Roosevelt masih bersedia, maka bisa dipastikan dia akan memenangkan pemilu tahun 1944 dan melanjutkan masa kepemimpinannya yang keempat. Tapi mengingat kondisi kesehatannya yang terus memburuk, semua orang tahu bahwa untuk kali ini dia tak akan mampu menyelesaikan masa tugasnya.

Oleh sebab itu para petinggi partai Demokrat merasa wajib untuk mencari kandidat wakil presiden yang benar-benar tepat sebagai pendamping beliau. Seseorang yang bisa diterima oleh semua pihak, sebab sewaktu-waktu bisa jadi dia lah yang akhirnya dilantik sebagai orang nomor satu di Amerika Serikat.

Sosok Wakil Presiden yang lalu Henry A Wallace dianggap kurang berkomitmen pada partai, tidak memiliki jiwa kepemimpinan dan keras kepala.

Pilihan-pun jatuh kepada Harry S Truman, senator dari wilayah Missouri. Pernah menjalani penugasan militer, sempat menjabat sebagai pemimpin komite pengawasan penggunaan uang negara selama masa perang. Dikenal sebagai tokoh anti korupsi yang ramah serta mudah bergaul dengan semua kalangan termasuk dengan kelompok partai republikan, meski juga dikenal sering ceroboh dalam mengambil keputusan.

Ketika menerima nominasi partai Demokrat, untuk maju sebagai pendamping FDR, dia sama sekali tak menduga, sangking terkejutnya bahkan dia sempat mengeluarkan kata umpatan. (Konon hingga hari ini disebutkan bahwa hanya Harry S Truman calon peserta pemilu presiden dan wakil presiden yang menerima kabar nominasinya dengan umpatan. 😂 )

Sepulang dari konferensi Yalta, di bulan Maret 1945 kondisi kesehatan presiden FDR benar-benar berada di titik nadir. Kelelahan ditambah aksi politik pengkhianatan yang dilakukan oleh Rusia melalui pemimpinnya Joseph Stalin, semakin menambah beban pikirannya.

Keluarga presiden memutuskan untuk beristirahat di rumah peristirahatan pribadinya di little White House, Warm Spring, negara bagian Georgia.

Pada tanggal 12 April siang, saat tengah menyelesaikan sesi lukisan portrait-nya presiden FDR kehilangan kesadarannya dan dinyatakan meninggal sore itu akibat pendarahan otak.

Harry S Truman yang ketika itu sedang menghadiri suatu jamuan makan malam, segera dijemput menuju ke istana untuk dilantik sebagai presiden.

Dia sempat menyampaikan rasa duka cita kepada Eleanor Roosevelt dan mengajukan pertanyaan basa-basi, "apa yang bisa saya lakukan untuk janda presiden dan keluarganya?"

Eleanor-pun menjawab, " Seharusnya, kami yang bertanya padamu, apa yang bisa kami bantu? Sebab sekarang tanggung jawab berat (sebagai presiden) itu berada di pundakmu.

Hal yang pertama dilakukan Truman adalah mengumpulkan para pejabat tinggi di negeri itu. Meminta kesetiaan mereka dan memastikan bahwa tidak ada seorang-pun dari mereka yang mengundurkan diri, di tengah situasi duka ini.

Aku tidak tahu kalian pernah menerima beban seberat apa ( dalam hidup kalian) , tapi jika kalian bertanya, sejak kemarin, aku merasa bahwa bulan, seluruh bintang-bintang dan planet-planetnya telah menimpaku secara bersamaan. - Harry S Truman

Truman baru secara resmi menerima keterangan detail tentang bom Atom pada tanggal 25 April, sebelumnya sama seperti mayoritas pejabat teras Amerika Serikat dia hanya mengetahui hal ini sebagai kabar burung. (Sebab proyek pembuatan Bom Atom bersifat sangat rahasia dan hanya dilaporkan kepada para petinggi militer dan presiden.) analisa bahkan menyatakan bahwa Agen-agen rahasia Uni Soviet lebih mengetahui perihal pengembangan Bom Atom Amerika Serikat dibandingkan Truman.

Keputusan untuk menggunakan Bom Atom pun, diambil Truman sebagai jalan Pamungkas.

Meski telah mengalami kekalahan di berbagai tempat dan kehabisan sumber daya, Jepang tidak berniat menyerah dan masih berusaha memutarbalikkan keadaan. Mereka juga tidak berniat untuk mengadakan perundingan damai.

Akhirnya pada tanggal 6 Agustus Bom pertama dijatuhkan di Hiroshima. Serangan ini langsung membuka mata dunia betapa secara de facto Amerika Serikat telah memenangkan perang ini.

Pihak Jepang meski mengetahui bahwa Hiroshima telah di hancur lebur kan oleh Bom Nuklir masih menganggap remeh Amerika Serikat dan menganggap bahwa Amerika Serikat hanya mampu membuat 1 buah bom atom sejenis itu.

Amerika Serikat terpaksa menjatuhkan lagi sebuah Bom Atom di Nagasaki pada tanggal 9 Agustus. Jepang-pun akhirnya menyerah, sadar kekuatan mereka bahkan jika digabung dengan kekuatan Jerman dan Russia masih kalah jauh dibandingkan kekuatan militer Amerika Serikat.

Di kemudian hari, keputusan Truman untuk menjatuhkan bom Atom ke Hiroshima dan Nagasaki dianggap sebagai kekeliruan yang berdampak panjang.

Namun dia tak pernah menyesal, dia percaya bahwa saat itu hanya Bom Atom lah yang bisa meredakan nafsu angkara murka Jepang dan menyelesaikan perang. Menurutnya bahkan keputusannya lebih manusiawi daripada harus memperpanjang lagi masa perang, menyia-nyiakan sejumlah besar sumber daya dan mengorbankan ratusan nyawa lebih banyak.
