For the railway roundabout au Is thomas the Rose or Steven this universe Or is he somehow both did he lost his memory or something
I know that I have established Thomas as Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz and that’s because the way he changes in Railroad Roundabout kinda reflects on that. So let me explain!
He initially starts off as an arrogant young man with little to no experience in working on a railway. Although he is hardworking and always eager to make himself useful, his pride and rudeness have led others to have a low opinion of him. Overtime, he realizes that in order to gain the respect and appreciation he truly deserved, he’ll need to change his behavior. He begins helping out others and taking moments to under their feelings, making him realize how valuable his relationships are. He also learns how to appreciate the life around him so that he doesn’t have to tie his self worth solely on his career.
So yeah, like Pink becoming Rose, Thomas matures to become a kinder and more empathetic person, He may have made a few foolish and impulsive decisions while doing so, but what matters is that he is always striving to be better.
I will say that there is also an equivalent to Steven in this AU! And I will elaborate some details about it down below:
A few years have passed and Thomas gradually becomes burnt out by his career. Running his branchline no longer gave him the joy he once had when he had first started. He decided that he had to step away, even though it pained him to do so. He still loved all of his friends and knew that he had built a strong reputation for himself, so leaving everything behind would be a devastating thing for him to do. Still, he knew that this would be best for him. He eventually quit and leaves Sodor so that he can go and pursue a new dream: travel the world to sightsee different railways and expand his knowledge on them.
Meanwhile, back on Sodor, a new recruit was ready to take his place. She was a young woman who had heard about the countless escapades of NWR’s #1 engine driver and was eager to work with him one day. Though she was disappointed to see that he was already gone by the time she joined the railway, she was determined to follow in his footsteps and do the best she can do. Her name was Rosie.
#wysty's answers#wysty writes#wysty's headcanons#railroad roundabout#thomas the tank engine#ttte Thomas#ttte Rosie#Phew! I certainly had a lot to write here but I hope this makes sense!#I had this concept about a new generation of the Steam Team for a while now. Maybe I’ll expand on it once I’m back from vacation#and Rosie will be the main protag of course so I guess that makes her Steven? haha

The Development of the NWR
So first of all, Happy New Year everyone! I actually want to start this year by poking everyone’s brains for a bit of a RWS discussion.
What is the Transition Period of the NWR? As in, what time period or series of events do you consider to be the most significant/impactful in the the NWR’s development from chaotic dysfunctional clusterfuck holding on by a bootlace and a prayer and shambling around in the rough approximation of a railway, to still very quirky and chaotic but it is actually a functional railway?
My answer, or at least my current answer is below:
Honestly, the NWR’s development might be a bit too gradual to point to a specific time period as being the most significant, but if I had to pick I would say the late 30s and early 40s.
I remember seeing a post by @mean-scarlet-deceiver, I believe it was this one, which briefly mentions how in the mid to late 20’s there was some notable factionalism between the engines of the NWR’s fleet: you had the “big engine trio” of Gordon, Henry and James, the “old guard” of Edward and Thomas plus new recruit Percy, and the “bully club” of 98462 and 87546, as well as several other engines, including the remaining pre-NWR holdovers, who would all probably have been somewhat divided into various groups and factions.
It would have probably been during the Second World War that these dividing lines would have either blurred or in some cases disappeared completely, with the much more fully encompassing identity of being North Western Engines taking their place. War is above all horrible and destructive, but as a side effect it can also be a hell of a force for unifying and strengthening national and cultural identities.
During the war, there would have been a lot more work with much less down-time and even less regular maintenance. Engines would have been coming and going much like when the NWR was being constructed back during the First World War. Not to mention there would probably have been several War Department engines arriving on the Island who, while they would have been a significant help to the NWR’s overworked locomotive fleet, their constant attitude of “for King and Country” and “doing your part for the Crown” might have come into conflict with Sodor’s independent streak. Sudrians fought hard and made plenty of sacrifices during the war, but they don't take kindly to outsiders telling them what to do. All of this instability would have led the NWR’s engines to circle around each other, and from this would have emerged the idea that “Yes, while we all come from different places and backgrounds, we’re all Sudrians now! The NWR is our railway and home, and we’re all one big found family!” The engines would develop a much stronger sense of unity during this time, and this would serve them well in the post war years, especially during nationalization.
This was probably also a very important time period for the individual development of many of the engines. As a few examples: Henry around this time probably really embraced his new-found strength and confidence following his rebuild, with he and Gordon pulling some of the heaviest and most important trains on the railway; Edward probably pushed himself far beyond his mechanical limits, trying to avoid being left in the shed again, which is probably what led to the worn out state he’s in by the time the events of his book roll around; and I image Thomas would have further developed his deep rooted sense of responsibility and loyalty to his branchline and the people who live along it around this time (as an aside I wonder if this is when Thomas first became friends with Mrs. Kindley).
As for 98462 and 87546, if you believe them to still be on Sodor at this point, there’s a lot of different directions you could go with them. Maybe their bad behavior finally catches up to them and they’re relegated to lesser duties on more out of the way parts of the Island. Maybe the hardships of the time period prove to be the slap in the face they needed to begin to reform. Maybe they split off from each other, one reforming and trying to become a better engine while the other doubles down on their bad behavior. Or maybe they both leave Sodor entirely. In any case, probably the biggest source of toxicity within the NWR’s fleet is either greatly reduced in strength or removed from the equation entirely. Which would again be a big step in the railway’s development into a far more functional and healthy social environment.
To keep this from getting too much longer that’s where I’m going to end. Again, I want to try to spark some discussion with this post, so please reply or reblog with your thoughts and opinions on what time periods and events were the most significant in how the NWR developed overtime. I’m very excited to read them!

📂
Much has been made of the "Locomotive Crisis" which impacted the North Western Railway immediately following the First World War. The company found itself in an uncomfortable position. The end of hostilities meant that the Government subsidies which had kept it solvent would stop, and that the Mainland engines who helped pull trains "for the duration" would now be sent home. The railway was now pressed for engines of its own as traffic picked up. The Fat Director had the unenviable task of managing the railway, fighting off efforts by Mainland railways to absorb it, and searching for new engines all at once.
Enter Pettigrew.
The conditions surrounding the Locomotive Crisis led to some of the railway's most famous recruits, such as Gordon and Henry, but also several less celebrated examples. Like Gordon and Henry, these obscure engines were obtained cheaply and quickly, and were thus just as likely to "go right" or "go wrong." Shortly after Henry's arrival, as the company was still hopeful they could make him out to be their flagship engine, the Board once again sent The Fat Director to find an engine in England. This time, his mission was to come back with a six-coupled tender engine capable of pulling trucks or coaches. Unable to convince the Board to make Henry the mixed-traffic engine and have him search for a better express engine instead, The Fat Director went grudgingly across the channel on what he thought was a fool's errand.
The Furness Railway almost immediately sent him on his way. They had practically kept Sodor afloat during the war, and they were in no mood to get sucked back in during peacetime. Hatt was insulted, and when his next stop turned out to be the Great Central Railway, he was practically fuming. The Fat Director had already been burned by them while searching for one of their Atlantics, and here were the NWR Board members expecting him to waste money and potentially make a second mistake in the same place all over again.
This time around, however, he was received and accommodated much better. They showed him an engine of theirs who was so new as to still be unpainted and just barely assembled. The engine in question had been planned to be the first in a class of several six-wheeled maid of all work engines, but the GCR had called off the order for the others as the Grouping of 1923 came nearer and nearer. The engine was demonstrated to Hatt, and performed well enough for him to buy him on the spot. With a brand new engine in tow and sold to him at a fire sale price, The Fat Director shoved off for home.
Once on Sodor, the engine was quickly painted up in Hatt Blue with Red Stripes and put to work. The engine quickly became named "Pettigrew," the surname of his first regular driver. In service, Pettigrew was a hard worker, but very, very withdrawn. The reasons why remain unclear. The arrivals of 98462, 87546, City of Sunderland, Gordon and James occurred in quick succession. Pettigrew, soft-spoken and obedient in comparison to this bunch, became further overshadowed, which he didn't mind a bit.
Pettigrew was one of several tender engines to continue working through the Big Three Strike of 1933, and was one of many on the Island who failed to be assigned a number when they were first applied to engines in 1934. That same year, he left the Island for the last time. The North Western Railway was working to raise cash to buy a new engine should Henry be replaced, and Pettigrew was sold to the Andrew Cross Steel Company in Scotland. Details of his life on their internal system are few and far between, but he was most likely broken up at the works' closure in 1960.
