Perhaps the most famous part of the operation was when German troops surrounded the 101st Airborne Division in the Belgian town of Bastogne. The Germans demanded that the unit surrender but the division commander Brig. Gen. Anthony 'Tony' McAuliffe replied to the German ultimatum with the word "NUTS".

Decades later, one of Gen. McAuliffe's (then) junior officers described what took place.

The 101st held their ground for several days in Bastogne until a larger US force was able to break through German lines to relieve them.
