general society is such an underthought aspect of mha. obviously there’s the big things like the obsession over heroic quirks and the demonisation of villainous quirks. quirkless people are dismissed entirely but i don’t think we talk about how society in general would have to handle a world with super powers.
we know after afo’s first uprising, the government overcorrected and outlawed public quirk usage. we know people have their quirks registered and go through quirk counselling as well as a type of gym class where they practice under teacher supervision.
how in the hell is that supposed to work?
the closest equivalent i can think of is mental health services. someone would have to study for a long time to be able to pursue quirk counselling as a career. it’s also a highly personalised system: everyone has a different quirk - even similar ones have different activations, triggers, exceptions and drawbacks - so no two sessions could ever be the same. if anyone’s been through mental health services, you know how rough it is; it’s an overworked, underpaid system and if you live somewhere that only offers a few free visits, it can also be expensive.
and that’s an elective service.
almost everyone on the planet would need quirk counselling.
there’s no way they could implement such a labour intensive and individual public system and we literally see that they can’t.
we see the gym class in amajiki’s flashback and he only has a few minutes with his teacher before he’s chided for not being more impressive and utilising his quirk to the fullest and they move on to the next student. say a standard class is twenty students like it is at ua. that leaves just over two minutes for each student to learn and practice their quirks. you can’t focus on just one kid per lesson bc what will the other nineteen do? do teachers also have to have a degree in quirk counselling? is that part of becoming a phys ed teacher or is it some random joe schmo trying to wrap his head around literal super powers?
given that inko goes to garaki - a doctor - to confirm izuku’s quirklessness, it can be assumed that quirk counselling is entwined with the medical system. i don’t know if you’ve ever had to apply for a specialist before but you can be on their waiting list for a while. a quirk counsellor is essentially a specialist. are there subcategories of counsellors? do you focus on either emitter, transformation or mutation the way doctors become cardiologists, paediatricians and neurologists? or is one person expected to be equally knowledgeable about all three?
we see through toga that her counsellor identified her need for blood but they didn’t find a way to curb those instincts or even find a supplement for her. she’s left to be abused by her family for something she can’t control bc it’s literally in her dna. compare that to iida who knows he needs orange juice to power his quirk. his entire family are pro heroes so it would be easy to assume they could employ a private quirk counsellor the same way richer people can employ private doctors.
how many people have specific requirements due to their quirks? changes in their physiology that have to be treated the same way nutritional deficiencies and allergies do? even people without mutations probably have those requirements: does kirishima’s shark teeth mean he’s an obligate carnivore? does mina’s acid change her ph levels and what vitamins and minerals she needs? how would they figure that out? quirk counselling.
what about kids like touya who would need extensive counselling so he could figure out how to live with his quirk without hurting himself? kaminari essentially has seizures and they’re so normal to him and everyone around him that they’re the butt of jokes. they wouldn’t be a one and done patient; there’s always going to be people that need continued support the exact same way there’s people that need developmental and disability support. there would be so many quirks that harm their user, are they just taught to bury their quirks? as if that wouldn’t cause any physical or mental consequences?
governments can’t create a system that applies to only some people, we’re expected to believe they’ve made one that applies to all of them?

trying to find resources for arfid is so exhausting. i’ve been wondering if it would be helpful for me to see a counsellor or doctor here that can specifically give advice for it but there’s always the feeling of like. Okay this person says they offer services for eating disorder recovery and nutritional planning but is any of this shit actually going to apply to me or help? not to mention if u wanna try groups . i entertained that thought for like a hot second but there’s so little spaces specifically for arfid and i reallyyy don’t think i’d fit in in a generalized eating disorder therapy group

Introduction
Infertility is a disease where you cannot become pregnant. Pregnancy is something that many women desire in their life, many women even believe that having children is their life purpose. When that lifelong goal is taken away from them, it is purely heartbreaking. It causes unbelievable amounts of stress in many aspects in women's lives when their body isn't doing what they want it to do.
The Impacts
Within responses from participants to the Infertility-Related Stress Scale done by Casu & Gremigni (2016) in his study, it proved that people who are infertile experience much more stress in their lives than those who are fertile. Anxiety and depression are both significantly increased with people who are infertile. Parenthood is extremely important for many people, the stress from infertility comes from not being able to achieve their life goals, specifically, not being able to have children (Galhardo et al., 2020). Many will try to avoid triggering these feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression by not going to certain places and/or talking to specific people, like people who have children, this is called experiential avoidance.
Stress derived from infertility can impact life in intrapersonal (marriage, well-being, life satisfaction) and interpersonal (relationships w/others, work performance) ways. However, Casu & Gremigni (2016) found that infertility impacted intrapersonal life more because it strongly affects the mental and physical well-being of the infertile person, and negatively impacting the relationship with their partner too. Married couples typically have a desire to divorce each other when infertility is present because either one wants a child in life, or there is insufficient support. But, when they stay together and help each other through the struggle, they build a stronger relationship (Onat & Beji, 2012).
Ways to Reduce Stress
There are many things to do that can help reduce stress when it comes to infertility. The number one option is to seek therapy with a psychologist or counsellor. They will definitely aid in recognizing unhealthy thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. Couples therapy is also extremely beneficial if you are having conflicts with your partner during this time. A second option can be meeting with infertility support groups. This is incredibly helpful, especially since you are surrounded by people that are going through the same thing as you. You're able to feel comfortable and have open conversations about the same struggles. The third option is called mind-body interventions (MBIs). MBIs are used to become one with your body to reduce stress, anxiety and depression in order to become more fertile (Psaros et al., 2015). During MBIs, you are told to complete tasks that evoke the relaxation response, which is the opposite of the stress response, and allows you to slow down your heart rate, relax muscle tension, clear your mind, and more. The tasks can include yoga, breath focus, mindful awareness, etc. MBIs also help you develop healthy habits in your life, such as better nutrition, sleep, and exercise. Psaros et al. (2015) found that 12 months after the MBIs, women participating in the MBIs were able to conceive because they had social support and decreased depression and stress. Overall, each of the options above are great for those who are infertile as it provides support and advice in a time of desperate need for both of those.
Interview
Amira is a 38 year old woman who has been infertile since last year. When she found out she was infertile, she experienced very high levels of anxiety, depression and stress, and still has the same feelings today. She expresses how she had very scary and triggering thoughts and would question what her purpose in life is (06:54).
She experiences experiential avoidance by not walking through baby sections at stores, which would trigger her and cause a wave of sadness. She might look at certain items for babies and think, "I would've bought this for my child", and then realizing she can never have children for the rest of her life. Although, she does work as a head secretary at an elementary school and just being at her own job triggers her and brings unwanted emotions. As she might see people her own age with children, it can cause her to compare herself to them.
She explains how her diagnosis of infertility significantly impacted her life in intrapersonal ways than interpersonal, specifically, the relationship between her and her fiancé. She states how motherhood has always been her lifelong goal, but the fact that her fiancé doesn't necessarily feel the same way upsets her. She also states that how when she has bad days, her fiancé typically feels the weight of it, causing his mental health to sink a bit.
She manages the stress in many ways, either by seeing her counsellor, talking it out with friends, family and/or her fiancé. Amira says that when she is having an off day, she likes to engage in her own kind of meditation where she sits in her dark room in silence and just be one with her body. She says she likes to do this before engaging with the world in order to calm herself down on bad days. This is a form of MBI that can help lower stress.

I mean, I'd hazard a guess at...running?
Seriously though, is it just me seeing this kind of stuff all over social media?!? I actually took the words above from an article today that made me laugh. Apparently some squat jumps and I am all good!
As a runner, it can be hard to differentiate the sense from the nonsense some days, and it doesn't help when we're targeted with such click bait-y headlines that are oh so tempting (and often sprinkled with a dose of shame too!). A quick fix? Something that everyone else is doing? Guaranteed results? Winner!
But more often than not it sees us jumping from pillar to post, chasing the next 'best thing' that we'd be insane to miss out on - because of the promise that it could be THE thing that makes us magical. And that can only set us up for chaotic and inconsistent training; panic as we view ourselves from a generic, external perspective (comparison is the thief of joy!); and frustration that nothing ever really works for us.
And it can be so hard to turn away from the flashy headlines that in almost all cases focus on marginal gains - because it's exciting and sexy to think about the little adjustments working some big, fancy miracle (especially if your training mates don't know about it yet - think of the bragging rights!). When the basic foundations of sleep/rest, food/fuel and training volume are, well....not that sexy, but so often neglected.
Yes, there is evidence that 5 minutes of hopping exercises daily could increase your pace, but does that even matter if you're not getting good quality sleep?
Strength training can improve your body's energy efficiency and power when running, but if you're not eating enough will you even see those strength gains in the first place?
The way I see it, these snippets of 'invaluable advice' can actually end up derailing us from our goals instead of helping us achieve them. I am a great believer in making things simpler and smarter instead of overcomplicating stuff. First off I'd say, turn your focus inwards and get to know yourself: What makes you tick? What are the optimum conditions for your body? What do you want to achieve?
If you want to try out something new just choose one thing to experiment with and give it some time. So often we throw in 10 new variables and then get confused and disheartened when we can't work out what actually worked and what didn't. Check your training plan - is it SMART? (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timescale based) - basically is it realistic and is it relevant? Does it fit your lifestyle and can you (honestly) stick to it? I've come across clients who have even had running training plans that have consisted of little to no running at all - so I suppose I'd best add...are you running enough?
And, if its too overwhelming to navigate for yourself seek professionals who can help you, or refer you to someone who can! If you're after nutrition or training advice I'd highly recommend engaging with a good coach or qualified nutritionist. As for me, I help runners day-to-day with running aches and injuries using a wide range of treatments from sports massage and exercise therapy to trigger-point therapy and acupuncture.
I'll often listen to training plans and discuss how they're working for you. I like to help people understand how their body works, looking at strength and flexibility as well as working on parts of the runners body that are often overlooked, like our FEET! When was the last time you gave them some love, eh? And I'm also trained as a counsellor which helps me see the psychological side of things that are occurring for you too.
