Hyeon & Eben Part 2

TW: Child death, Death, Murder, Blood + Torture

Eben, Ruomei and Yukio were imprisoned for a whole year by Hyeon. During this time Eben and Ruomei were victims of torture but Eben still hoped that his brother would come to his senses and realise what he was doing was wrong. Yukio, though exempt from torture, was treated poorly while imprisoned. Food was sparse for the family and it hit the young boy harder as he became sick. The parents were unable to comfort and care for their son as they had been forced into different cells and could only watch as their son’s health decline. He never got better:

The day Yukio died it was the last time Eben ever held any love for his brother and saw him only as a monster. The news of Yukio’s death reached Nuo who was devastated. She requested to speak with Peony who had also learnt of Yukio’s death, also heartbroken by it. Nuo begged her to help save her son and daughter-in-law because she knew Hyeon would kill them as well, however Peony was extremely hesitant as she didn’t want to betray her husband as she still loved him despite the many cruel things he had done:

Peony went to Hyeon and questioned wether he knew about Yukio’s death and if he was planning on killing Eben and Ruomei as well. Hyeon thinking she was worried they would harm them promised he would get rid of them so they would be safe from them forever. After this confirmation Peony realised the husband she loved was gone and she needed to save Eben and Ruomei from him. She snuck away to the dungeons and guided the two to freedom and handing them over to a rebel group who had started to go against Hyeon and his rule. The rebels took Eben and Ruomei to safety in Diamonds:

Eben and Ruomei escaped to Diamonds with the help of the rebels and sort out safety from queen Lazuli Diamant, the King of Diamonds. Hyeon was furious when he learnt they had escaped and began to randomly accusing people of setting them free and betraying him. Everyone he accused was executed, commons, nobles, whole families were killed in his purge to get rid of the people who betrayed him. Peony watched all of this feeling guilt for not being able tot stop him and fear from knowing she would be killed once he learnt the truth. She went to Nuo crying what she should do and did not want to be the cause for so many deaths. Nuo gave her blessing to tell Hyeon what they both did, knowing well they’d both be killed. The two had been right, when Hyeon learnt the love of his life and his own mother had betrayed him he turned on Peony and blamed her for all of his misfortune and killed her and turned around and killed his mother in a fit of rage:

Eben and Ruomei in Diamonds were constantlybeing  informed and what was happening in Clubs and it was not long before they arrived in Diamonds did they hear about Nuo and Peony’s deaths. Eben wanted to return to Clubs and take back his home from Hyeon before he destroyed it and killed anymore of their people. He requested Lazuli for Diamonds aid in helping him and the rebels take back Clubs. She was willing on the condition he re-signed the Mineral Treaty and begin to feed the Diamonds people as they had been starving without Clubs exports of food:

Eben and Roumei return to Clubs and began to build up their rebellion with the aid of Diamonds money and weapons they supplied to them. For many months they'd go through Clubs gaining more support from the and fighting off the Royal soldiers that were still in support of Hyeon. Most of soldiers defecedt and joined the new Rebel Army. However Eben constantly felt wrong about trying to take the throne of Clubs and making himself King of Clubs:

As the rebellion got closer to Kíshu Eben’s doubts only heightened and became afraid what would happen if he killed his brother and became a king slayer. The rebels were staying in a small town just a few miles away from the capital where Eben went to the small temple there to pray to the Fae of Clubs, Lian, for guidance. There as he prayed Lian came to him begging him to save her people and to become their king. She couldn’t bare their pain anymore and wanted them freed from Hyeon’s tyranny. She reassured him that he was not wrong in taking his brothers throne and she didn’t see him as her King of Clubs anymore, and hadn’t in a long time:

With Lian’s reassurance and blessing Eben had a new found confidence, ordered for an advance and charge on the capital. There they found Kíshu as a ghost town and the majority of the army had abandoned Hyeon. The rebels received little resistance as they stormed the Clubs palace where Hyeon had left himself to wither away. Eben barely recognised his brother as he was imprisoned in the same cell that he had thrown Eben in:

Hyeon was locked away and imprisoned where he waited for his own execution. Despite Ruomei’s protest and advice to leave it be Eben decided to go down to see his brother in his cell. Eben struggled to see the person he grew up with and looked up to and only saw the man who destroyed his life, family and kingdom. He questioned why he had done it, why had he done it all? Hyeon’s only reply was “I don’t know… I thought I knew… but I don’t.”:

Eben found no closure in seeing his brother again and shortly after the brothers final conversation Hyeon was executed and Eben was made the King of Clubs. The start of Eben’s reign wasn’t easy as he tried to stabilise Clubs and build up what Hyeon had destroyed. He re-signed the Mineral Treaty and began to send food over to Diamonds once again ending their famine. Roumei was by his side the whole time helping and advising where she could as the Queen of Clubs. They had to squash several rebellions who called Eben a usurper and a traitor to his brother and true King of Clubs. Six years after Yukio’s death Eben and Roumei finally had another child, a little girl who they called Clover. Though they would never forget Yukio they were so happy to have a family once again and they were overjoyed when their second daughter, Sakura, was born years later:

Hyeon & Eben’s Story Part 1

TW: Blood, pregnancy loss, death + torture

Prince River Méihuā, had been engaged to Nuo for six years, something that had been arranged by his father, King Naoki. In that time the two had grown close to one another and looked forward to their future union. However when Nuo was 18 she got an infection in her eyes and became permanently blind. Despite River’s protests Naoki ended the engagement and tried to find a different partner for River. For several years River fought off several other suitors and matches that his father had tried to force upon him. Naoki died before River ever married. As soon as River became King of Clubs he married Nuo without a second thought:

The two had two sons, Hyeon, their oldest and heir, and Eben their youngest prince. Nuo was a wonderful mother telling them stories constantly which the boys loved. The two adored their gentle mother and everything she taught them and every story she told. River was not as gentle as his wife and had high expectation but was a very loving father, however most of his attention was directed to Hyeon making sure he would become a good King of Clubs. The two brothers grew up close to one another. It was rare to see one not being close to the other:

Eben fell in love with the daughter of the Five of Clubs, Ruomei Vadas. For a long time the two struggled to get the permission from both the King and Queen of Clubs who felt Eben should be married into a much more powerful family since he was not going to inherit anything from them when they passed and everything was going to go to Hyeon when he would become the King of Clubs. Hyeon helped the couple in convincing their parents into letting Eben marry Ruomei:

It was not long after Eben and Ruomei were married did Hyeon have his own romance with the Ten of Clubs daughter Peony Ono, a very shy lady who would often run away from Hyeon which hurt his feelings constantly, especially when he wasn’t able to get a word in. Ruomei knew Peony from around court and she managed to introduce the very shy Peony to a very eager Hyeon. Despite her own jumpy nature, Peony was charmed by Hyeon’s excitement of just getting to speak to her and found him very sweet and well intentioned though very loud in his feelings. The two courted for two years before finally getting married and tied the knot:

More joy was soon proceeded with Eben and Ruomei having their first child; a baby boy, Yukio. Though Eben and Ruomei were excited about being new parents it almost seemed that Hyeon was more excited. Hyeon’s very family oriented nature was so excited for the new edition in his family and was excited about starting his own with Peony one day:

However Peony and Hyeon were not so lucky in their hopes of extending their family. The two struggled to conceive and when they did unfortunately they were never able to hold onto the pregnancy for long. The two were often left devastated and heartbroken from these moments. While Peony found comfort with Ruomei letting her spend time with Yukio and spoiling him Hyeon became less open and began to stay within himself more:

To make things harder for Hyeon and the rest of the Méihuā family River suddenly taken ill at the age of 70. The family came together to say their farewells to husband and father. River, though the one passing, was the one to comfort his family. He reassured Hyeon the most and tried to reassure him he would make a good King of Clubs. None of his words really registered with Hyeon as he was too shocked and devastated to fully accept River was leaving him forever:

After River’s death Hyeon and Peony were crowned the King and Queen of Clubs. However Hyeon struggled as he mourned his father and mourned any hopes he had of having a family with Peony. Peony noticed Hyeon’s sudden change in demeanour and change of personality and tried her best to comfort and be there for her husband. No one else truly notice dhow unwell and unstable Hyeon had become thinking it to be just him mourning and getting used to his new role:

Three years into Hyeon and Peony’s new reign Hyeon’s mental health and lack of became much more noticeable to others. He became much more irritable than he had been before and easily angered. Along with that he had become extremely paranoid, convinced everyone was after him and his wife. As time went by it only got worse as he refused to get help and would cling to Peony as his only true ally and love. His paranoia escalated to fortifying the Clubs palace and capital, Kishù where he banned people from coming in and was near impossible to leave:

With Hyeon’s paranoia increasing over time he started to make drastic decisions that began to escalate every time he made a new demand. He had beloved festivals in Clubs banned, he had food burnt deeming them poisonous and dangerous to him and his wife, he even ended a centuries long treaty with he Kingdom of Diamonds convinced they were plotting against him. Unfortunately the paranoid thoughts never stopped and only gotten worse with time. It finally extended to his brother and his family. Along with his paranoia he had become jealous of Eben and his small family he had managed to created while he and Peony were unable to have any children. He became so sure that they had been trying to get rid of him and Peony in order to take their throne away. Hyeon didn’t hesitate to have Eben and Ruomei arrested despite them protesting their innocence and that they would never want any harm to come onto him or Peony:

Eben refused to accept his brother would do this to him and refused to ‘confess’ to being traitor. He kept shouting and pleading how he was innocent and would never hurt his brother. Hyeon not taking kindly to his ‘traitor’-brother’s denial had him and his wife tortured in order to get the ‘truth’ out of them. Still Eben adamantly denied everything. Hyeon getting more and more frustrated by Eben protests and claims of innocence went down to his cell and cut out his eye himself, screaming and shouting at him to stop lying and to tell him the truth he had wanted him dead, but Eben still denied everything holding onto hope his brother was still in there:

Disclaimer: Mental health is a very serious issue and this is not me trying to vilify it. It is not the main reason for Hyeon’s actions and does not excuse them either. His mental health’s decline is part of a bigger problem

When Hyeon was executed, did he ever see dead Peony? If so what did they say to each other?

They only got to say hi before Nuo beat the ‘un-living’ shit out of him

The Clubs Royals family tree! A brief explanation, Clubs is the only patriarchal society so unlike hearts and spades the oldest inherits the throne while the daughters are overlooked. This is opposite of Diamonds which is the only Matriarchal society in the Cards world and it is inherited through daughters.

I don't know why but i'm curious to see her hair down, do you have any sketch?

I do t actually draw her a lot so the sudden inspiration to draw her earlier was a nice change. But I do have a drawing of her with her hair down because I’ve started planning out Eben & Hyeon’s mini story:

I have a question about Eben's parents,did they already know each other when Nuo went blind?

Yes. Nuo and River had been engaged since they were 12 (? From what I can remember), all arranged by River’s father. However when Nuo became blind Naoki ended the engagement despite River’s protests since he had fallen in love with her and they had become close. River managed to avoid being married off until his fathers death were he then married Nuo

If you don't mundo I have to questions about queen consort Nuo: 1-Nuo is blind?I ask because of their eyes 2-Was she arrested by Hyeon too?

Nuo is blind. She got an infection in her eyes when she was 18 and became blind. She’s a very optimistic person so she just got on with life and didn’t really mind being blind too much.

Nuo wasn’t arrested but she had been the one to ask Peony to help save Eben and Ruomei after hearing about her grandsons death. She was murdered with Peony by Hyeon once he found out his wife and mother ‘betrayed’ him.
