A Visit to Numberland
I had another dream of a place so strange that i question my own state of mind even putting the experience of it onto paper.
As I relaxed and slowly succumbed to my slumber and fell into a state of dreaming i noticed something peculiar about my surroundings, the comforting edges of my house were gone, instead of the familiarity of my neighbors i noticed strange shapes. the first one i noticed was irregular, or at least it was my impression.
I saw an edge then what appeared to be a large dip that left but a small dip of grey and then another edge. Part of me thought my eyes were failing me and i was seeing multiple people perhaps, two women and a female child but the more they moved it became apparent that this was a singular being.
"Who are you?" I asked.
The being came closer and the edges of it were of grave concern, not only was this being tall but it appeared as if parts of it were round and others straight. this vulgar amalgamation of parts to me suggested some kind of weird abstractions monster, an irregular rectangle with square sections, likely the result of some form of awful breeding mishap.
"What do you want?"
"I don't want anything. im minding my own business. What pray tell are you doing in my garden?"
"Your garden?"
"Yes, i just planted some pluses, please do not step on them"
"Answer me please, who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Duo" this being said. "I'm a two as you should've been able to derive from my smell"
"Your smell? two?" I felt like i was out of my depths, i wanted to just shoo this likely criminal away but his talk of pluses and smells intrigued me enough to refrain from trying to find the nearest policeman to report this being.
Every fiber of my being wanted this being immediately destroyed but my curiosity was even greater than my revulsion.
"Yes, I'm a number 2" the being said. "the smell of two is a pleasant lavender aroma, don't you smell it?"
I didn't say anything because this didn't really tell me anything. While I could smell the lavender scent, it told me nothing about it.
"What shape are you?"
"I'm no shape, I'm a number. The number 2. A small number but at least I'm a whole number. What number are you? you smell like nothing. Are you perhaps a fractal? Not judging, but you smell strange"
"No, I'm a square"
"A square? that's nonesense. I'm far more willing to believe you are a fractal, standing and trampling over my pluses than I am willing to believe that a table has suddenly gained the ability to talk"
"No, I'm from Flatland, is this not Flatland?"
"You say silly things talking table, but no this is Numberland"
with that i was bolted awake in terror. That creature was hideous and said such strange things. I was back in my room.

@darklight-owl SO glad you asked :~)
The game is called Stuart Little’s Adventures in Numberland; you play as Stuart while he completes math games in a weird snow globe dreamscape.
Tumblr media
Every completed game gives you more “brain power” which is represented by a piece of Stuart’s brain lighting up:
Tumblr media
Once your whole brain is aglow, you get taken to The Back Room where a lil panda guy scans it and remarks at how powerful it is. You are prompted to select shapes on a screen, which form a minimalistic image of a toy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then you get the SHIT FRIED OUT OF YOU (there is a visceral crackling sound effect)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lil panda goes "you got fried", the 'womp womp' sad trumpet sound effect ensues, and the toy comes to life
Tumblr media
Anyway I didn't think there was anything strange about this until years later. Early 2000s video games (ESPECIALLY 'educational games' are always a trip in case you wanna watch it (link)
Yo does anyone else remember the Stuart Little electric chair game?

Of the villains who does each member of the team hang out with the most and who do they consider their closest friend/frenemy in your headcanon?
This is my headcanon(s)
Geo & The Shape Bandit:
The Shape Bandit started hanging out with Geo at first when he was forced to in order to be "reformed" or lose his house according to the police chief. But he enjoyed the kid's positive attitude and personality and slowly Geo was a good enough influence that the Shape Bandit doesn't need to be forced to hangout.
Bot & Squiddy:
Squiddy's a nerd that likes to make machines and tech and always asked Bot how he worked, and bot would explain(sing). Squiddy kept doing this because he liked the company of the android and Bot enjoyed the company as well.
Milli & Zilch:
I just like the concept that Zilch sucks at Math and Milli sucks at Magic so they act as tutors for eachother. They are good friends because of this though, even if Milli doesn't visit numberland as often as she'd like.
Oooh this sounds very fun!
Geo
I am a Geo and Little Trouble friendship truther for life. Little Trouble is very much a bad influence, the bad idea friend, the adult who teaches five year old Geo every swear word, and overall the devil on Geo's shoulder. But I also fully believe that Little Trouble would be one of the fiercest protectors of Geo. He would kill someone for hurting a single hair on Geo's head, and then immediately deny that he likes Geo at all when questioned about it.
Bot
I think Bot and Zilch would be really great friends. Bot would 100% tutor Zilch in math and I think Bot would actually be able to teach Zilch concepts in a way he actually understands, as opposed to how people in Numberland usually tell him about those concepts. Bot would also probably show Zilch around Umi City too, and I think that Zilch would travel around the city because of him.
Milli
I generally think that Milli would be good friends with all of the villains (aside from the Troublemakers), but I feel like Shape Bandit might be someone she gets along with a lot. Milli was definitely not a fan of him at first due to the whole incident of Geo's shape belt getting stolen, but I think the two would quickly get along once she trusts him. They'd definitely make shape patterns together and I feel that Shape Bandit would take her for rides on his motorcycle.

Numberland
Numberland https://ift.tt/JaXzpI4 by Axiomea It’s 2004. Seven years ago, the world almost ended. After he killed Harry Potter, Voldemort unleashed a deadly fog over the world, killing 73% of the population and forcing the survivors to seclude themselves underground. Now established at Hogwarts, the only fogless place left, his Empire is growing stronger and deadlier. Every year, the Death Eaters capture mudbloods and muggles to partake in a wandless and violent year-long tournament called Numberland to entertain the Purebloods that pledged their allegiance to the dark side. To ensure the players' performance is entertaining, they are ruthlessly trained, fed and harboured in the castle. Meanwhile, outside the Empire’s borders, the UK is stirring with the dangerous energy of a civil war. When Hermione is captured and assigned to Draco’s training, she realises three things. One, Draco, now paired with a dog that never leaves his side, is even more dangerous and broken than before. Second, the person she was before can no longer exist in Numberland. And lastly, her desire to win might not be greater than her desire to burn the Empire to the ground. Words: 17552, Chapters: 5/56, Language: English Fandoms: Harry Potter - J. K. a bunch of numbers from another realm...
as you can probably tell, they're based on the characters from numberblocks.
lore will be introduced.
Tumblr media
7 has the ability to create rainbows, and manipulate colors. Unfortunately, he has anger issues. If not controlled, his anger transforms him into a darker, more powerful version of himself.
This version is called -7, and is based on F.
-7 create thunderstorms, and can remove color from anyone to make them feel negative emotions. 7 tries to avoid this by thinking about things he likes, listening to music, or escaping into his own space. He also has an Irish accent.
8 is autistic. Their special interest is, the legendary hero of Numberland himself, Octoblock. They have grown tentacles to try and be like him. Their tentacles can allow them to walk on walls, grab things above others' reach, etc.
9 was born a very sneezy number. No matter how hard he tries, he can't stop sneezing. However, this can be used to his advantage...
Tumblr media
12 is made out of rubber.
14 is a one-sided toxic duo. They don't get along well, but if 1 tried to dump 4, he will eat him whole. This is why 1 never leaves his side.
16 manipulate others to do their bidding, which makes them seem evil. But what if they were to use their powers for good?
17 is very silly. 7 has the powers to use telekinesis and telepathy. It can also read minds, but that makes it nervous when anyone (except the 1) walks by them. 1 doesn't mind. All they care about is if whether or not 7 is alright.
18... is a different story. 8 is flirty, and goes about her day singing to herself. The 1 she has by her side is her wingman, but he seems more interested in her than anyone else is.
Tumblr media
19 is mysterious. 9 is the leader of a mysterious clan. 1 may not look like much, but he is 9's guardian. Calling him a staff only makes him angrier, and stronger. 1 has the abilities of your average, ordinary, everyday dragon. The only difference is that he knows the dark arts.
A robotic 2 was made by 1, a scientist who only needed someone by their side.
26 is the planet in which the numbers live on. She doesn't like all the conflict and danger that happens on her. She wishes she could do something. Anything. But all she can just do is watch.

[ID: a stylized line character with a large circular eye near the top. Her eye lid is purple and she looks like she's in thought. near her head to the left is a thought bubble with the symbol for pi, a heart and a line followed by a question mark, underneath is a small gay pride flag followed by a question mark END ID]
This is the main character of Numberland, Funis. She's deep in thought after meeting Pi, a librarian who helps her out and lets her stay at her place for a while.

Facts about Pi you probably didn't know
Post #19 on [Maths,] Physics and Astronomy, 16/07/23
I lied, my next post is not about nucleosynthesis in merging neutron stars. I watched a Veritasium video about how Pi was revolutionised and it totally had me encapsulated, so after some extra reading, here I am with some facts about Pi you weren't taught in school! I wish that we were taught about some of the fascinating history behind the maths taught in school. It's interesting as-is, but you'd think students would be a lot more engaged, right?
Tumblr media
Pictured: Ludolph van Ceulen, the German-Dutch mathematician responsible for calculating Pi to 35 digits of accuracy by bisecting polygons. In some places in Germany, Pi is sometimes still referred to as the Ludolphine number.
Archimedes of Syracuse is the man [somewhat] known for taking the most iconic bath in history. One day, he slipped into the bathtub and realised that the volume of water displaced was equal to the volume of his own body; realising this, he determined he could work out if a piece of jewellery was made of pure gold based off of its density. He realised the King of Syracuse's crown wasn't made of pure gold, and ran into the streets naked shouting, 'Eureka!' This has nothing to do with bisecting polygons, but it's a fun anecdote I wanted to share.
What he's better known for is being the first documented person to cook up a way to calculate Pi. To do this, he drew a hexagon, then a circle inside, and another hexagon inside that. The following diagram shows this:
Tumblr media
Here's the best explanation I can offer of this diagram. You see the circle? Assume its diameter is 1. Since the inner hexagon is equilateral, you can determine that its perimeter is 3 (each side is length 0.5). Using a method that's annoying to explain and essentially akin to early trigonometry, the outer hexagon's perimeter was determined to be 3√2. This already gives us an error interval for the value of Pi:
~3.46 > Pi > 3
Fascinating, right? Safe to say I'd never have thought of that. What's cooler is that, as shown in the diagram, the higher the number of sides in those polygons, the higher the degree of accuracy to which Pi can be worked out.
There comes van Ceulen, aforementioned. He spent 25 years of his life bisecting a polygon with approximately 32,212,254,720 sides, getting Pi to a grand total of... 20 decimals. This was later brought up to 30 decimals. These digits were engraved on his tombstone, rest his soul.
Following this, a great number of formulae to calculate Pi emerged. More commonly known is the infinite series.
Tumblr media
This formula also works out the decimals of Pi, and it was devised by Gottfried Leibniz and John Gregory. Pi, being the pinnacle of anarchy in maths, now had a strange sense of order to it. This formula essentially states that (Pi / 4) is equal to 1 minus a third, plus a fifth, and so on so forth. A relatively unproblematic formula could work it out.
It's worth mentioning that the infinite series was derived from calculus, also invented by Leibniz. However, Newton had also independently come up with calculus. A great deal of time was spent arguing over it; but old papers suggest it was an Indian mathematician named Madhava who had come up with it before them.
This formula isn't all too efficient. It took nearly 300 terms of the series to get Pi accurate to 2 decimal places.
However, the popularisation of calculus meant that other formulas had been created to work Pi's decimal places out. Then, it merely became a race of who could get the highest number. Any number of decimal places above 4 was unnecessary; engineers could do their job perfectly with Pi being 3.1415. It seemed as though the young, adventurous mathematicians of the age were concerned less about practicality, and more with the extent of their achievements. For that, I have a lot of respect.
