A Visit to Numberland
I had another dream of a place so strange that i question my own state of mind even putting the experience of it onto paper.
As I relaxed and slowly succumbed to my slumber and fell into a state of dreaming i noticed something peculiar about my surroundings, the comforting edges of my house were gone, instead of the familiarity of my neighbors i noticed strange shapes. the first one i noticed was irregular, or at least it was my impression.
I saw an edge then what appeared to be a large dip that left but a small dip of grey and then another edge. Part of me thought my eyes were failing me and i was seeing multiple people perhaps, two women and a female child but the more they moved it became apparent that this was a singular being.
"Who are you?" I asked.
The being came closer and the edges of it were of grave concern, not only was this being tall but it appeared as if parts of it were round and others straight. this vulgar amalgamation of parts to me suggested some kind of weird abstractions monster, an irregular rectangle with square sections, likely the result of some form of awful breeding mishap.
"What do you want?"
"I don't want anything. im minding my own business. What pray tell are you doing in my garden?"
"Your garden?"
"Yes, i just planted some pluses, please do not step on them"
"Answer me please, who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Duo" this being said. "I'm a two as you should've been able to derive from my smell"
"Your smell? two?" I felt like i was out of my depths, i wanted to just shoo this likely criminal away but his talk of pluses and smells intrigued me enough to refrain from trying to find the nearest policeman to report this being.
Every fiber of my being wanted this being immediately destroyed but my curiosity was even greater than my revulsion.
"Yes, I'm a number 2" the being said. "the smell of two is a pleasant lavender aroma, don't you smell it?"
I didn't say anything because this didn't really tell me anything. While I could smell the lavender scent, it told me nothing about it.
"What shape are you?"
"I'm no shape, I'm a number. The number 2. A small number but at least I'm a whole number. What number are you? you smell like nothing. Are you perhaps a fractal? Not judging, but you smell strange"
"No, I'm a square"
"A square? that's nonesense. I'm far more willing to believe you are a fractal, standing and trampling over my pluses than I am willing to believe that a table has suddenly gained the ability to talk"
"No, I'm from Flatland, is this not Flatland?"
"You say silly things talking table, but no this is Numberland"
with that i was bolted awake in terror. That creature was hideous and said such strange things. I was back in my room.

@darklight-owl SO glad you asked :~)
The game is called Stuart Little’s Adventures in Numberland; you play as Stuart while he completes math games in a weird snow globe dreamscape.
Every completed game gives you more “brain power” which is represented by a piece of Stuart’s brain lighting up:
Once your whole brain is aglow, you get taken to The Back Room where a lil panda guy scans it and remarks at how powerful it is. You are prompted to select shapes on a screen, which form a minimalistic image of a toy.
And then you get the SHIT FRIED OUT OF YOU (there is a visceral crackling sound effect)
The lil panda goes "you got fried", the 'womp womp' sad trumpet sound effect ensues, and the toy comes to life
Anyway I didn't think there was anything strange about this until years later. Early 2000s video games (ESPECIALLY 'educational games' are always a trip in case you wanna watch it (link)
Yo does anyone else remember the Stuart Little electric chair game?

More Assorted Small Team Umizoomi Headcanons (Christmas/Holidays Edition)
- Bot always gets everyone he's close to some kind of present based on what they like, and will even modify it before giving the present if something is off with it (ie adjusting clothes that won't normally fit)
- Shape Bandit always has the best decorated Christmas tree due to all the shapes he hoards
- Numberland does not celebrate Christmas, but the King of Numbers hosts a feast every year around the holiday season
- Grog, the Sunshine Fairy, and the animals pf the forest don't celebrate Christmas either, but do have a first snow celebration
- Zilch visited Umi City for Christmas one year and he adored how the city was decorated for the season
- Squiddy loves the amount of Christmas lights up in the city, and takes the Blue Mermaid out of the ocean to see them yearly
- Little Trouble does not believe in Santa, saying it's too unrealistic. Yes, it has been pointed out how he actively lives in a world with talking animals and fantastical creatures walking around everyday, and he does not care because "I've seen all them with my eyes, I've never seen Santa a day in my life"
- If it was his choice, Little Trouble wouldn't even celebrate the holiday at all, but Big Trouble insists on celebrating it, so they do
- Doormouse always gets joke/gag gifts from his coworkers for the holidays, and always gets the worst gifts from white elephant. Bot is one of the few people who give him genuine gifts

so these beings can combine to form larger entities, right? and these larger entities are capable of splitting apart into their constituents, but they are also capable of splitting into parts that were not used in the construction of the whole. this is because each successive entity is made up of just one more of the most basic unit. like 3 + 4 = 7, but so is 2 + 5 and 1 + 6, but at the end of the day, it's all seven 1s.
and what's really interesting is that every instance of the same size will have the exact same appearance, voice, gender, personality - indistinguishable aside from maybe an accessory, and even that is highly unusual. they'll also frequently speak in unison and act in a coordinated manner, which i think implies a hive mind. however, there are scenes in which an entity is startled to find an identical entity present in the same room, so it seems there are limits to that. not only that, but they also have the technology to duplicate themselves instantaneously. these duplicates can also split up at will.
this is where it gets really weird though. larger entities have split into smaller ones before in response to conflict, and these smaller parts may express an opinion or desire that contradicts that of the former whole. smaller entities will express confusion upon realizing what has happened and wonder where the whole went as though they were mere observers in the third person, while also commenting on how they have been changed in the first person singular. and! there are instances where the larger entity seems to not be fully "fused" yet, and both components will speak in unison with both faces present until a third party can help them acquire a true sense of self with what seem to be a form of grounding exercises, upon which the entity will obtain a unique face and voice of its own, with its own unique quirks, which may not resemble its constituents in any way.
so my question is, in a world like that, what do the concepts of identity and individuality mean to the Numberblocks. do these ideas have any real weight in Numberland. hey did you hear like a gun being loaded just n

Numberland
Numberland https://ift.tt/93TLW4p by Rose_tortora16 È il 2004. Words: 1, Chapters: 1/56, Language: Italiano Fandoms: Harry Potter - J. K. Facts about Pi you probably didn't know
Post #19 on [Maths,] Physics and Astronomy, 16/07/23
I lied, my next post is not about nucleosynthesis in merging neutron stars. I watched a Veritasium video about how Pi was revolutionised and it totally had me encapsulated, so after some extra reading, here I am with some facts about Pi you weren't taught in school! I wish that we were taught about some of the fascinating history behind the maths taught in school. It's interesting as-is, but you'd think students would be a lot more engaged, right?
Pictured: Ludolph van Ceulen, the German-Dutch mathematician responsible for calculating Pi to 35 digits of accuracy by bisecting polygons. In some places in Germany, Pi is sometimes still referred to as the Ludolphine number.
Archimedes of Syracuse is the man [somewhat] known for taking the most iconic bath in history. One day, he slipped into the bathtub and realised that the volume of water displaced was equal to the volume of his own body; realising this, he determined he could work out if a piece of jewellery was made of pure gold based off of its density. He realised the King of Syracuse's crown wasn't made of pure gold, and ran into the streets naked shouting, 'Eureka!' This has nothing to do with bisecting polygons, but it's a fun anecdote I wanted to share.
What he's better known for is being the first documented person to cook up a way to calculate Pi. To do this, he drew a hexagon, then a circle inside, and another hexagon inside that. The following diagram shows this:
Here's the best explanation I can offer of this diagram. You see the circle? Assume its diameter is 1. Since the inner hexagon is equilateral, you can determine that its perimeter is 3 (each side is length 0.5). Using a method that's annoying to explain and essentially akin to early trigonometry, the outer hexagon's perimeter was determined to be 3√2. This already gives us an error interval for the value of Pi:
~3.46 > Pi > 3
Fascinating, right? Safe to say I'd never have thought of that. What's cooler is that, as shown in the diagram, the higher the number of sides in those polygons, the higher the degree of accuracy to which Pi can be worked out.
There comes van Ceulen, aforementioned. He spent 25 years of his life bisecting a polygon with approximately 32,212,254,720 sides, getting Pi to a grand total of... 20 decimals. This was later brought up to 30 decimals. These digits were engraved on his tombstone, rest his soul.
Following this, a great number of formulae to calculate Pi emerged. More commonly known is the infinite series.
This formula also works out the decimals of Pi, and it was devised by Gottfried Leibniz and John Gregory. Pi, being the pinnacle of anarchy in maths, now had a strange sense of order to it. This formula essentially states that (Pi / 4) is equal to 1 minus a third, plus a fifth, and so on so forth. A relatively unproblematic formula could work it out.
It's worth mentioning that the infinite series was derived from calculus, also invented by Leibniz. However, Newton had also independently come up with calculus. A great deal of time was spent arguing over it; but old papers suggest it was an Indian mathematician named Madhava who had come up with it before them.
This formula isn't all too efficient. It took nearly 300 terms of the series to get Pi accurate to 2 decimal places.
However, the popularisation of calculus meant that other formulas had been created to work Pi's decimal places out. Then, it merely became a race of who could get the highest number. Any number of decimal places above 4 was unnecessary; engineers could do their job perfectly with Pi being 3.1415. It seemed as though the young, adventurous mathematicians of the age were concerned less about practicality, and more with the extent of their achievements. For that, I have a lot of respect.
