Anyone else feeling Shark Drake vibes from the whole Darkness Galactica Oblivion thing? Just the look of the card and the context with Yuudias etc. Darkness Dwarf did vanish but my instincts are still telling me that this is going to go similarly.

Episode 34.

This Duel has a lot of callbacks, and lots of call forwards. So we will ignore those, and discuss this episode's utility, and trivia.

Astral's OOPArts speech features Tenzen Yanagi's cards, which were recently printed last year (2022), and this year (2023).

The episode is to ensure Shark gets Number 32: Shark Drake, which will become his "main" Number, and ace monster, even after the show's airing, though the show proper will ditch it quickly in favour of Abyss Splash, then Silent Honor ARK, then post-humously the non-Number N.As.H. Knight, then the recent batch Xyz Monsters.

So yeah, it is not that important.

Much like what will happen with Alit later on, III initially uses his non-Number Xyz, Chronomaly Crystal Chrononaut to obscure his actual ace monster. He loses this Duel barely, since he is supposed to be the same level as Yuma, and Shark at this point is still stronger than him.

The Duel itself happens so we can save IV confrontation for later, and have III as the main antagonist of this Season specifically.

This episode also establishes the bandaged person in Shark's flashback is his sister. We won't know of Rio's identity until later on in ZEXAL II.

This episode, like the previous one, is written by Yoshida, so these two episodes are meant to be a two-parter. After this episode, we will break up with the Arclight part of the plot to focus on the mid-bosses, and a one-off stuff.
