THE Grand Hotel, Temora (NSW) was built and opened by local publican, William Kenny, who had hosted the nearby Terminus, on the opposite corner. Kenny contracted a Mr Butler to build the single storey pub in March 1900, and the building was completed in September of the same year. Temora boy, and fellow pub enthusiast, Pat Adams tells me that ‘The Grand’ was known locally as “The Mud Hut” and closed its doors in 2008 after it was sold to the next door, ex-services club. WHEN an Illawarra civic leader was found dead on the sofa of Wollongong’s Commercial Hotel in 1872, the news caused a sensation. Edward Killalea (pictured centre) was elected to the Shellharbour Municipal Council just two years before his death from the “effects of excessive drinking” and swallowing enough strychnine “to poison the entire population of Wollongong”. Killalea was on his way from Sydney, south to his home at Shellharbour, when he decided to rest-up at the Commercial Hotel in Crown Street, Wollongong. The alderman’s wife Maria had separated from him, and as a result, Killalea was hitting the grog heavily.
