The miniature locos of MSTEC
Down at the Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club, we've got a collection of 9 miniature locos. Currently 3 in service for passenger operations, diesel P11 Reg, steam 43 Clive and petrol-electric Joy. Volunteers are currently working on overhauling two of the steam locos, NSWGR Z12 No.342 and No.1200 Franklyn Flyer, with the former doing test runs earlier this year. Here's all the engines: H220 Heavy Harry and AA440 Captain James. The H Class has 3 cylinders just like the real-deal himself!

Hi! I'm Rex, and as you could guess, this is where I'll be posting stuff about my model trains! I mainly use HO/OO scale, but i do have a couple On30 locos, and an F scale loco!
I have created a fictional nation for my railway to take place in, which is Galant Island. Named after a type of car that is closely related to my 1976 Lancer.
I do have some lore relevant to it, which I may post in future, but for now I'll keep this blog mainly focused on my models.
The main railway of this nation is the GSR; Galant State Rail. (Its also another car referance) I've only recently settled on this name, so I've yet to put it on any if my locos. I'll probably go over each of my models as I add GSR onto them, excluding locos that I'm not modifying, like my NSWGR C30T by Wombat Models or my VR D3 by Pheonix Reproductions.
I haven't got any track set up at the moment, as I'm still finishing off my hobby room, which is a mezzanine in our shed. (Just the roof paneling, trims and benches before i move my stuff in, as of 13/10/23) I'll be running DCC instead of analogue/DC.
Feel free to ask any questions!

Engine 3001 @ Thirlmere 2024 Festival of Steam
Thirlmere village was once again awakened to the enchanting sound of the steam whistle for the annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam! One of the featured engines stealing the show was Engine 3001 - In 1903, the magnificent locomotive 3001 was crafted by the skilled hands of Beyer Peacock & Co in Manchester. This beauty was the first of 35 locomotives ordered for Sydney's bustling suburban passenger routes, sporting a sleek 4-6-4T ‘Baltic’ configuration. The success of this design led to more deliveries from Beyer Peacock and the NSWGR Eveleigh Workshops, eventually growing the class to a whopping 145 members. Originally known as S 636, this locomotive was the leader of its class, earning the S(636) class title. But in 1924, during a renumbering by the NSWGR, it was reborn as 3001 of the (C)30 class. As the Sydney suburban system evolved, 3001 and 76 of its fellow class members underwent a transformation from 4-6-4T to 4-6-0 tender configuration. This change allowed them to tackle mixed traffic duties on country branch lines, showcasing their versatility and power. These converted locomotives, now part of the (C)30T class, replaced older models and breathed new life into the railway system. Some even received hand-me-down tenders from the locomotives they replaced, adding a touch of history to their modernized look. The first conversion took place in July 1928 with the final one wrapping up in 1933, marking a new chapter in the story of 3001 and its fellow locomotives.

The engines of Sodor got to meet the world famous Australian streamlined engine known as Shiela, who happens to be engine 3801 from the New South Wales Government Railway. She’s the sister of Bruce aka NSWGR engine 3806.

Hey! I was wondering if you, as an Aussie, knew any good books or websites that compile info on Australian locomotives and railways. I'm kinda out of my depth as a Brit but I wanna know more about 3801 and other preserved Aussie locomotives.
Before you get into our engines or our railways, you need to understand how batshit our railway gauges are.
youtube
There is a database that catalogues all current preserved engines and it's a good place to start before you narrow down to what you want to specifically research. 3801 is a part of NSWGR. It gives you the basics of every engine we have preserved and you can go form there if you pick a certain engine.

While I was making the last post, I figured that my sudrian engines won't fit in with my "post as GSR lettering is added to the locos" plan, so here we go!
Edward, the Old Iron
Tumblr media
Made out of a Hornby D16 & a Hornby Schools Class Tender. Now, for the funnel I used a brass NSWGR C36 funnel, if I remember correctly. The safety valves actually came with my C30T as an alternate detail piece, i just painted them a brass colour. When it comes to the tender, i had a significant problem, which bugs me to no end. For some reason, Hornby wired the two models' tender plugs differently!
The decoder is in the tender, therefore theres a plug between loco & tender. Both the Schools class and D16 have this plug. But, for example, the left rail wire on the D16's plug then connects to the Schools class' right rail wire on the tender's plug! I have no idea WHY they thought itd be a good idea, why not just have them all the same?? Either way, I got around it by resoldering the tender pickups.
For the paint, i used my acrylic brush paints; a colour matched blue from bunnings, which is just interior house paint (it actually works really well!), primary red from Matisse, Mars Black from Matisse, primary yellow from Matisse, and Bronze Yellow from Liquitex.
As for the lining, i used O scale LNER lettering (from Fox Transfers) for the 2, and OO scale LNER lettering for the N & R, and OO GWR lettering for the W, both from Fox Transfers.
Oh, and for the chrome, i used a really nice paint pen called Liquid Chrome by Molotow, I believe. Its really nice
