How did you become a hospice worker, and are you like a hospice nurse, or more in admin? Were you a healthcare major, or did you get into it through other means? I'm an English major, but if my plan to work in education doesn't work, I think healthcare (but like in admin) would work for me
I'm a Medical Office Administrator, which means I basically make sure everything in the service runs as smoothly as possible.
Things I do include but are not limited to:
Creating and updating forms and other patient documentation
Creating and updating patient information like brochures, pamphlets, etc.
Working with Admissions to make sure visits are entered in the province's digital health records
Patient database and chart work - keeping things organized and up to date, making sure reports get to the correct nurse, dismantling charts after patients die to send to health records, etc.
Organizing training/education for our team and for the public
General clerical tasks like keeping track of and ordering supplies for both office and nursing needs, assembling PPE kits (for when patients have COVID and the nurses need to be decked out in full gowns/masks/visors/etc.), taking minutes at team meetings, etc.
Helping with the Intake Triage program - answering patient/public calls, paperwork to set up new admissions, assembling new charts, database entry, booking appointments, etc.
When the hospital unit actually opens (right now we have no doctor for it so it's not, we just see people in the community) I'll likely be responsible for more stuff, like patient/family arrangements, helping with transfers, etc.
As far as schooling goes:
I went to NSCC and took Office Administration, then ended up continuing on to take specifically Medical Office Administration. So, 2 years total for me, but you are able to skip OA and jump right into MOA if you want, I know plenty who have done so
MOA is typically a 1-2 year program
Courses are a mixture of office-related and healthcare related - so for example, I studied things like Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology, as well as Spreadsheets lol
There's actually a ton of different healthcare jobs you can get with an MOA certificate, because every single program needs at least one, you know? You could work in a lab, you could work in a doctor's office, you could work in hospital admissions, you could work in the ER, you could work in a clinic somewhere... the list goes on and on
How I ended up with my job specifically:
NSCC has a workplace practicum program, where they place you somewhere in your field for a month and you gain hands on experience. What happened with me is I got placed with Hospice-Palliative Care, and they liked me so much that I got hired right out of college! So I really lucked out with my job. If not, I probably would've pursued working in a lab somewhere; that was my original goal until I did my practicum and fell in love with the hospice field

Small businesses in Atlantic Canada struggling with retail theft
As the economy struggles, small businesses are beginning to experience an increasing number of thefts and robberies.
Biscuit General Store, located in the heart of the busy North End of Halifax, has been the target of a number of thefts over the past few months. More recently, the business dealt with robberies.
“Our windows were broken twice, and here at Biscuit, we’ve had two attempted hold-ups,” said Wendy Friedman, owner of Biscuit General Store.
Friedman says beyond being hard on staff, these incidents are hitting the store’s bottom line.
“I feel a responsibility to take care of the people in my business,” said Friedman. “It’s also scary for me as a business owner because I can’t really absorb the expenses that have resulted from a lot of these incidents.”
Friedman is not alone. Thefts and robberies are on the rise across Canada, more fallout from the pandemic. Experts say this is a big a problem.
“Once the pandemic wound down, there were so many people staying home that, as they returned to the stores, the rate of thefts went up. The estimate is around almost five to six billion a year,” said Ed McHugh, NSCC Business and Marketing Professor.
Clothing stores are not alone in dealing with the burden. Convenience stores are also being hit.
“We have seen a noticeable increase in gas-and-dash drive-offs, retail theft and break-and-enters and more so recently since COVID-19 restrictions ended,” said Mike Hammoud, Vice President Atlantic of the Convenience Industry Council of Canada.
“We’ve made governments and police aware of the increasing theft issue and will continue to advocate for more police resources and security. Our industry operates on slim margins. We’ll need to see improvements or some stores are going to be forced to close.”
McHugh says inflation is feeding to the rise of crime like these.
“Inflation is running at four to six per cent,” he said.
McHugh predicts thefts are going to continue to increase. He said this will lead businesses having no choice but to take more aggressive measures in protecting their stores.
Despite the numerous thefts that Friedman’s stores have been the target of, Friedman said she sees a bigger issue.
“I think people are really struggling right now financially and mentally. As a city, I hope we can recognize this and just support people in the community,” said Friedman.
Following the incident, Friedman decided to have 10 per cent of her store’s sales go toward a local organization.
“We’re donating to the Parker Street Food Bank just because I see what they do to help those in need in the community and I see people frequently going there, so I know they are helping people.”
In the meantime, Friedman said she’ll do what she can to support her staff.
“We won’t have any staff working on their own here anymore, and also, we’re bringing in counselling and doing some things to help my staff feel more safe.”
It’s another act of generosity during increasingly trying times.

that isnt an email. i cant just email Baker. thats not how it works

why is there two listings for the same place with the same contact, the only difference being the abbreviation?
also, this is specifically a listing for dartmouth, not halifax, which has a different listing for nscc with a different contact. if you dont know about nova scotia, dartmouth is a part of halifax because its in the halifax regional municipality along with bedford. in american terms, imagine if you were looking for jobs in new york, and the website you were applying through only showed you jobs in the city instead of the state. also the website is nyu. its not even consistent, because the counselling services for a university thats a turn off the bedford highway is listed as being in halifax even though its, yknow, in bedford.
whatever, i found erica bakers contact from their website (which wasnt linked, i had to seek it out myself) so lets-
Tumblr media
oh. okay. my bad.
in my defense the website is almost designed to dance around the fact that they dont do counselling without outright saying it, i cant be the first person to make this assumption

whatever, i found erica baker-gagnon's page on some weird obscure mental health linkdin or something, lets see if they have a contact.
