Review: No Zodiac – Eternal Misery

Earlier this year Eternal Misery marked the release of the bands second full length feature since the acclaimed Population Control back in 2012. Fast forward to 2015 and you now have former-vocalist Gerardo fronting the new but reputable Hard Death band BODYBAG whilst Connor Karwoski has brought with him a harder edge to the already hammering sound of No Zodiac. Karwoski's vocal style typically lies somewhere between the hyper confrontational land of hardcore and the realm of deathly metal lows. His delivery goes fist in face with the more metallic approach adopted and adapted by the rest of the band. For this release the Californian five piece have mustered a sound that stalks the borders of both hardcore and slamming brutal death metal whilst retaining a sense of signature originality. Eternal Misery hosts nine tracks lamented with everything from deathcore riffing a' la early Whitechapel and Carnifex to more battering ram slams than you can screw your face up at. Anybody who states they've heard this record without feeling like they could battle on coming traffic with their bare hands is a liar. Just like their Beatdown Hardware label mates Nasty this bands bludgeoning style of metal brings with it an infamous rudimental energy. The type that can only be found in full frontal musical aggression.

Jeff Boozer and Chris Yafchak nail the axe saw chopping iron guitar tone down to a tee and Chris “Grubby” Cole's bass is nothing short of gnawing. Production wise they've captured their sound perfectly. It's dense, in your face with punch and unforgivingly abrasive, made only better by Karwoski's powerful bark establishing itself as a dominating force throughout the record. Immortal Agenda sees him unleashing gutturals that even Devourment's own Ruben Rosas would be proud of. An added bonus comes in the form of The Acacia Strain's Vincent Bennet making a guest appearance on Constant Decay, delivering one of the most savage verses of 2015 in his unmistakable growl. Tracks such as Tormented and Endless Suffering break up the album's rampaging onslaught with ominous doom ridden and despairing instrumental landscapes. They drag the listener deeper into the nihilistic and misanthropic world outlined in Karwoski's lyrics which make a mockery of all life, religion and the entire human race. In true No Zodiac style each line is bleak, violent and to the point. The band refuse sugar coat their message with hidden meanings and pretentious word play. Like the music itself every word, every single syllable, is a blunt hammer strike of hatred. This next step into taking a darker approach on

their already infamous direction has paid off highly for No Zodiac who have come back with one of the heaviest and most nihilistic releases of 2015.
