The Truth about White Rice: Hidden Dangers of Processed Carbohydrates
White Rice might perhaps be the staple preparation item seen in any number of Indian recipes. It has been a staple for thousands of years and is integrated into a host of traditional dishes ranging from biryani to idli. Boiled with a fluffy texture, it may seem paler than other things but brings unmatched to so many recipes. However, in the case of White Rice, the refined nature promises secret dangers that should be negotiated because of the rich food heritage of India. This blog explores the deception of White Rice and highlights the reasons for embracing better alternatives to uplift diet and health quality.
The Refining Process and Its Impact
White Rice is preferred in Indian cooking because of the soft texture of the cooked Rice which helps to balance rich curries and stews. Of course, this also means that during the refining process, the bran and germ of the Rice grain are stripped away, leaving the nutrients and fiber behind. The only thing left is the starchy endosperm of the Rice grain, which has far fewer health benefits to offer.
Nutrient Removal
Rice loses a good amount of nutritional value through refining. Here's what's lost:
- Fiber: Fiber helps to prevent constipation and maintain stable blood sugar levels. It is used for digestive health.
- Vitamins: Some deficiencies found in White Rice include B vitamins, B1 or thiamine, B3 or niacin, and B6, which are used in energy metabolisms and total well-being.
- Minerals: Some of the important minerals in diets are lost during the refining process, such as iron, magnesium, and zinc.
Notably, many of these nutrients are replenished by enrichment but are far from comparable to the integral nutritional value found with brown Rice or other whole grains.
Health Risks of White Rice
1. High Glycemic Index
The high GI in White Rice forces the glycaemic activity and rapid spiking of blood sugar levels, eventually leading to insulin resistance, thereby increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes area of tremendous concern in India with each passing year, with cases increasingly ascribed to lifestyle and dietary habits.
Comparison: Traditional Indian grains like Brown Rice and Millets have a low GI; which hence keeps the blood sugar level more balanced.
2. Weight Management Issues
Weight gain and obesity, which are increasingly of concern among India's population today, could be linked with high-GI foods like White Rice that cause hunger and overeating. The high fiber content in more grain types would reduce hunger and help retain their weight control.
White Rice in Indian Heritage
Indian heritage does not have any other place but a revered one for White Rice. It is used to prepare:
Any kind of Biryani: Steamed fragrant Rice with spices, meat, and sometimes vegetables.
Idli and Dosa: Steamed fermented Rice cakes and crepes from Rice and urad dal or black gram respectively.
Pulao: Rice preparation cooked with aromatic spices and vegetables or meat based on the choice.
As these cuisines constitute an impeccable portion of Indian culture, giving way to healthier options does not degrade the original staple foods in any way.
Healthier Variants Dominant in the Indian Tradition
1. Brown Rice
Brown Rice is a whole grain that includes bran and germ, thereby increasing the fiber content and also vitamins and minerals. It is much healthier than White Rice and can easily be a substitute for most traditional recipes.
Usage: Brown Rice Biryani or Pulao may be a wholesome alternative to traditional recipes.
2. Millets
Indians have been consuming these super grains such as Foxtail millet, Finger millet, and Barnyard millet for generations. Essential minerals, fiber, and protein are rich in Millets.
Usage: Millets offer a wholesome and nutritious substitute for your regular Dosa, Khichidi and Upma.
3. Quinoa
Tiny Quinoa is a nutritious grain that is becoming more popular because of its high protein content and low GI, although not of Indian origin. It can be included in Indian dishes to improve health.
Usage: Quinoa can be used as a substitute for Rice in biryani or pulao or added to salads for that protein boost.
Healthier Grains in Traditional Dishes
There's no limit to the flavours of the traditional when making healthier grains. Here's how you can incorporate alternatives:
1. Begin Step-Wise: Mix Brown Rice with white Rice in your recipes. Gradually increase the percentage of brown Rice over time.
2. Experiment with Flavours: Spice up Brown Rice with flavouring herbs to make it all the more presentable in your recipe dishes.
3. Breathe New Life into Traditional Recipes: Replace White Rice with Brown Rice, Millets, or Quinoa while preparing your favourite traditional recipes and breathe a healthier twist to these old recipes.
Conclusion: Rephrasing White Rice
White Rice itself has a deceitful story. Its highly refined nature has decreased its nutritional value and is proven to contribute to many health problems. In consequence, by learning about the negative impact White Rice has on you and healthier Indian-tradition-based alternatives, you can modify your diet and improve your well-being.
The incorporation of whole grains, whether Brown Rice, Millets, or Barley, besides a healthier lifestyle, does justice to India's rich culinary heritage. Adapt to these changes, and you'll enjoy traditional flavours with healthy food on your table.

None of this post is about Conversation. The post is about Obedience - if someone has an issue with your work, the post doesn’t ask you to have a Challenging Conversation, the prescription clearly is to check the race of the person telling you what to do and, if nonwhite, do it unquestioningly.
That isn’t *conflict* - conflict is when two people have opposing view points, and advocate those opposing viewpoints, and maybe expose weakness in eachothers arguments and in the process learn a few things. Maybe abandoning positions that are revealed through conflict to be flimsy, refining beliefs to be stronger.
This post calls for there not to be conflict - that if there would be a conflict between what a white author wants to write and what a nowhite reader wants that author to write, to default with the latter. This post doesn’t want people to *argue* whether something is okay to write, this post wants people to take certain people (nonwhites who are complaining about them) as an authority on what they’re permitted to write.
A conversation requires both parties to have a backbone.
The Laws of Fandom Protect Whiteness.
Disclaimer: I do think that fandom only works if people stick to the Three Laws of Fandom, i.e. SALS, DL;DR, and YKINMK. I am anti-anti and I believe that writing problematic things does not make you problematic in real life. Basically: I'm on your side, fellow fic writers.
But there is a caveat. We have to remember why the Three Laws exist. They are there so that fandom is a safe space for everyone. So it can be a place we all come to and feel respected and heard. But this undoubtedly privileges White people.
The Three Laws of Fandom will inherently protect White people's safety because we don't have to worry about unconscious bias or racist conditioning towards our race or ethnicity. The Three Laws of Fandom do not inherently protect People of Colour because White people in fandom will have forms of racist bias that we have to unlearn. Therefore, the Laws only work if White people choose to be actively anti-racist and listen to POC in the fandom.
Let's expand on this.
This is not saying that writing racism, or writing racially-charged themes, should be censored or off-limits to White people. But when we do write them, we need to remember that the Laws also only work because fandom operates on a comprehensive tagging system. We are able to enforce DL;DR because we have tags showing us exactly what is in the fic. Therefore - don't like age difference? Don't like non-con? Don't like violence? You can opt out!
But if you write racially-charged themes and don't give appropriate content warnings, then you aren't giving POC the chance to opt out. In fact, you are endangering their mental and emotional safety by pulling them into subject matter that has real-world implications for them. And yes, entering fiction always carries a risk of reading something that you don't like - but is far more dangerous for POC than for White people.
It is one thing to accidentally read a fic that depicts a kink you don't like, it is another for a POC to read their own experiences being depicted in a way that makes them out to be no big deal, and not even a big enough deal to be appropriately tagged.
It is also important to note that a POC alerting you to racist themes or passages in your work and asking you to appropriately tag or consider the way you wrote them isn't the same as them flaming you. In fact, it shows care. This person thinks that you are worth their time and effort to try and have a conversation with. If you shut that down and prioritise your right to write anything you want above someone's safety, that is a racist act.
This type of racism results in people like Stitch's Media Mix taking a hard line against the Laws altogether, as they are so regularly used as excuses by White people to justify racism. While I disagree with Stitch's ultimate conclusion, can I blame her for how they got there? The Laws have certainly never been leveraged against me to dismiss my lived experience or concerns, and have only contributed to fandom being a safer space for me. But Stitch is Black and speaks about antiblackness and racism in fandom - and gets barrages of death threats and hate mail for doing so, from fans participating in these spaces.
How are we supposed to tell POC that the Laws keep their spaces safe when they so clearly do not?
On a related note, I think the prioritisation of ✨positivity✨ over any sort of critique or conversation is another mechanism to protect Whiteness. It's important to remember that particularly in slash fandoms, the majority of fans tend to be white queer AFABs or genderqueer people, so the normal structures of patriarchy and heteronormativity that we navigate in our regular lives don't enter into fandom as pervasively. Whiteness, however, is the oppressive structure that tends to persist in slash fandoms, and therefore we need to be cognisant of how this can marginalise and isolate POC fans.
If you avoid difficult, race-based conversations because you only spread "positivity", then you do not actually care about everyone in fandom having a positive experience.
Paraphrasing from 'Conflict is Not Abuse' by Sarah Schulman, conflict isn't inherently bad. It's productive. It shows care. It's growth.
The Laws of Fandom can and should work for everyone. But we are the actual enforcers. We have to recognise the potential ways people can abuse the Laws to marginalise, threaten and isolate POC fans.
People of Colour deserve a seat at the table of fandom. They deserve a safe space. They deserve to feel wanted and seen and respected.
I don't have all the solutions for this - I'm White and recognise that everything I'm saying here I only learned from POC and have probably not said it as well or as eloquently as they have been doing (but no one's listening). I welcome any additions, critiques or insights from POC to this post.
The type of fandom I want to cultivate is safe and inclusive for everyone, and we need to start thinking about what that actually means.

nowhites replied to your post: the tweets speak for themselves i mean Wait. So...
@fetteredreams the way she gets attacked ABSO FUCKING LUTELY.
She absolutely gets attacked, but this tends to be largely by white people. And what the smaller blogger was pointing out is how she willfully ignored the theft of an editing style from a Black MUA by one of her non-white friends. So she frames her defense as “you ungrateful” (apparently Black) people, which is not a solid defense in any way. To be fair, I completely understand the need to defend yourself and I’ve supported Jackie when the attacks against her are unfair. But Jackie has a habit of siding with anyone who will continue to grant her access and money, which is why her defense of herself as an apparent activist doesn’t hold weight.

Oh dear...
Sadly the two people who responded negatively to my previous post have both blocked me without even waiting for a response. One accused me of "whitesplaining" and the other requested that I kill myself via a hashtag, not sure which amused me more.
So for the record "nowhites" and "soleil-allah" here is my reply to your somewhat silly responses.
Firstly do you understand what "ironically" means? Possibly not since you think "whitesplaining" is a word or that it has any currency outside your esoteric little American echo chambers. Generalisations about the colour of the sky are fairly harmless, generalisations about the behaviour and integrity of millions of complex individuals based on the colour of their skin are not.
Secondly pretty much any statement that anyone makes about anything is up for debate by anyone else - even if those responses are foolish, bigoted or ill-informed - as I am sure you believe mine to be (so much so that I should apparently kill myself). And if a statement was considered to be sacrosanct and immune from criticism or debate then surely that would need to be due to the weight of its truth rather than the race of the person making it?
Finally the Original Poster is playing a game which it is impossible for white people to win; if they agree with the statement or simply don't respond then OP can claim it as evidence they are right, if they object or attempt to debate it then OP can claim it as evidence they are right. The trouble is it's a game that anyone can play - we could consider a statement like "black people automatically and mindlessly respond negatively to anything a white person says" - if you ignore or agree with it then the person making the statement feels vindicated, if you respond negatively or challenge it then the person making the statement will feel vindicated.
Perhaps smug little linguistic games are not the most constructive approach to complex social issues?
