"I! AM! CASPAAAAAAAAAAAAR!" "... Okay," Linhardt said, not knowing what to do with this information. This was the wrong response. The boy—Caspar, he reminded himself, Caspar—emitted a positively massive groan of displeasure, lowering his imagined gauntlets and stomping his foot. "You're not s'posed to say 'okay,'" he said huffily, a pair of wrinkles appearing in his tiny brow as his small, pink lip puffed outward into a pout. "You're supposed to tell me your name, and do your battle cry! How am I supposed to know how to fight you if you don't tell me your name?!"

When six-year-old Linhardt von Hevring agreed to accompany his father on a business trip to the Bergliez estate, he'd had big plans: he would read, sleep, lie around in the sun, study interesting-looking bugs, and get as much time to himself as possible.

Nowhere in those plans had he accounted for the possibility of meeting one of the Bergliez boys—and he certainly hadn't expected to make a friend.
