March 2024 Book Log
(bold means new this month)
Bosnia: A Short History by Noel Malcolm
Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Book 6: Ghost Hunter by Michelle Paver (reread, finished)
Crowded Volume 2: Glitter Dystopia by Sebela et al. (finished)
Dactyl Hill Squad by Daniel José Older (unfinished)
Dinosaur Summer by Greg Bear
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Orochi Volume 2 by Kazou Umezz
Ranger's Apprentice Book 1: The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan (reread, finished)
Ranger's Apprentice Book 2: The Burning Bridge by John Flanagan
So CoAD 6 and the first Ranger's Apprentice both got read in a single weekend each. This is strange for CoAD because book 5 took me several months, for some reason, despite being an embarrassingly slim book. I think once I finished 5 I was like "the end is in sight LET'S GO" and just took off. Also I had a dream after finishing book 5 that the series had been adapted into a movie and it sucked ass. I'm telling you, this series had a grip on my entire psyche. Felt a shaking sense of loss and nostalgia when I finally finished it, but then I remembered Paver wrote three more books in 2020. My diseases shall continue...
Now Ranger's Apprentice is a weird one, because I genuinely do not like this series, but I think it was the exact genre and/or brand of mediocrity that I needed at the time I picked it up. Both that series and Graceling are books I remember my high school friends reading and loving, and they actually have a lot in common. They're essentially reverse sides of the same coin: the coin that represents the state of YA fantasy in the 2000s. That is... Boy Fantasy (TM) ...and... Girl Fantasy (TM) (C) (R).
As always I could say a lot but I'll restrain myself. Neither of these books/subgenres are ones I particularly enjoy reading or writing, but it's for that precise reason (in addition their overall prevalence in the YA scene) that I'm drawn to them. I need to know how they tick. I need to pick them apart page by page.
My briefest review of Ranger's Apprentice is that it's possessed by the spirit of passive misogyny. That is to say, male characters far outnumber female, and the few women we do see are constantly measured by their attractiveness to male characters. Thus far, we've yet to meet any ladies who are framed as obnoxious or villainous because of their female traits (i.e. shrill, cunning, bossy, sexy-evil), but I wouldn't hold my breath. Insanely enough, I think I'd find that much less misogynistic than this bouquet of sweet-smelling Women (c) (TM) who are So Very Pretty and can Do No Wrong and Never Ever Say Anything Mean Whatsoever.
Also I always find it interesting when a series chooses to have the antagonist's supporting forces be largely composed of "stupid" monsters simply taking orders from a single Big Bad. Definitely a major characteristic to me of the "Boy Fantasy" genre. To me it automatically makes the story much more shallow. It takes a certain power away from the battles, because at that point you're not killing soldiers, you're disabling robots and racking up points. And it (deliberately and understandably so) removes any difficulties from the concept of killing, which takes the interesting edges off all these rugged warrior-men and turns them into a pack of two-dimensional action figures. This is the blonde one. This is the one who gets mad at other people. This is the fat one.
Oh. Do not get me started on the fatphobia in this series lmao.
Compare that to Graceling, where (chapter 1-level spoilers here) the main character is a girl gifted with superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes, making her an exceptional fighter and killer. Her uncle, the king, uses her as an assassin to punish those who've wronged him. She has a body count that would put half the cast in Ranger's Apprentice to shame, but she's not exactly proud of it the way they would be.
In fact, her feelings about herself and her powers are very complicated...she sees herself as a monster, a dog who works for her uncle. She tends to isolate herself from others in a way that comes across as conceit. For the most part, she is proud of her skills, partly because she's spent so much time honing them, and partly because she truly is better at what she does than basically anyone else alive. But she knows she's ruining lives for her uncle. She recognizes her enemies are people just like her, not campy villains or flat stereotypes. She understands that she isn't just taking a life or breaking a finger, she's effecting change that impacts the lives of everyone around them. For this, she resents her uncle, and she especially hates her inability to resist his commands. She can't imagine herself as anything other than an outcast because of her gift and her history.
That's not to say Graceling is without its own set of flaws, but I definitely take its story and characters more seriously than those of Ranger's Apprentice.

The 25 best symphonic metal albums (by Metal Hammer)
24. Sirenia - Riddles, Ruins & Revelations (2021)
Pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a symphonic metal band, Sirenia’s 10th studio album Riddles, Ruins & Revelations embraced the darker side of the human psyche, as themes of addiction and declining mental health took centre stage in this sprawling epic. The Norwegians welcomed huge, melodic death metal elements to an already bustling pallet of gothic synths, infectious grooves and seductive melodies, Sirenia’s duality of melding beautiful music to harrowing subject matter making for a sympho-industrial masterpiece.
20. Delain - Lucidity (2006)
Former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt intended Delain to be a studio project, but his ambitious vision melded cinematic orchestration and bombastic metal into an extravagant gothic symphony too good to be kept locked away. Appearances from previous bandmate Sharon den Adel and then-Nightwish bassist Marko Hietala helped Delain’s credibility, however it was the angelic vocals of (now former) frontwoman Charlotte Wessels that brought the band’s debut album to life. Majestic and heart-sweepingly melodramatic, Lucidity is an essential chef’s kiss of a record. Mwah!
14. Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear (1996)
Arguably the most important of the European bands springing up in reaction to the romantic gothic doom innovations of My Dying Bride, this Norwegian septet’s seductive second album was steeped in the spirit of grandiloquent overdrive. Not only one of the first doom bands to employ full-time keyboards, Theatre Of Tragedy pioneered metal’s ‘beauty and the beast’ aesthetic, with duetting angelic/demonic vocals giving fulsome voice to a mournful soundtrack enhanced by the strings of the Streicherensemble Nedeltcho Boiadjiev, under German pianist Klaus Wagenleiter.
10. Epica - The Holographic Principle (2016)
By Epica's seventh studio platter The Holographic Principle, the hardworking Dutch sextet were a well-oiled machine: muscular, confident and keen to ramp up just about every element of their multi-faceted signature sound. More heavenly choirs, more unorthodox ethnic instrumentation, more brutal metal riffs, more of everything – and everything better, from storming killer-robot headbanger Universal Death Squad to the sublime elegiac grace of Once Upon A Nightmare. “You can’t ever reach the ceiling,” notes frontwoman Simone Simons of the album’s densely textured, hyperactive opulence.
6. After Forever - Prison Of Desire (2000)
While many turn to Decipher as the jewel of these Dutch sensualists’ discography, its predecessor, debut Prison Of Desire, not only shined a brighter light on the possibilities for growing orchestration and sumptuousness in metal, it introduced soprano Floor Jansen (current Nightwish vocalist) to the world. Coloured by the wildness of youth, main composer Mark Jansen’s death metal past and the possibility their sound could have fallen flat with the denim’n’leather-clad hordes, Prison Of Desire teemed with rawness and no-holds-barred extravagance.
5. Within Temptation - The Silent Force (2004)
Although you’re likely to be distracted by the captivating strength of Sharon den Adel’s upfront vocal dynamism, Within Temptation’s symphonic aspirations reached their most querulously romantic apex on this goosebump-inducing masterwork of the form. Although the guitars were louder and crunchier than on 2000’s Mother Earth, and the open- hearted pop savvy was at full widescreen pelt, this 2004 follow-up confirmed the band’s special affinity for wizardly orchestral bombast, here performed by the Ego Works Session Orchestra, under the noted Russian conductor Felix Korobov.
3. Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015)
While the Finnish band were already among the elite of symphonic metal, Endless Forms Most Beautiful really raised the bar for the genre. The concept was based around the evolutionary theories of Richard Dawkins – who even guests on the record – and Charles Darwin, and the scope and expanse of the music matched the ideological ambition. It all came together in a brilliantly realised, fully formed album, with new vocalist Floor Jansen proving a fine addition to the band. Endless Forms Most Beautiful was the sound of Nightwish coming of age.

Dutch Air Force makes first flight with its MQ-9 Reaper
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/23/22 - 16:00 in Military, UAV - UAV
According to an announcement by the Dutch Ministry of Defense, a milestone in the country's history occurred when a General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper drone of the Dutch Armed Forces made its first training flight.
Tumblr media
The flight took place on April 20 in Curaçao, where the Royal Dutch Air Force will test the unmanned reconnaissance aircraft in the next period. In addition, the unit can collect information directly in support of (military) organizations in the Caribbean.
Tumblr media
The Reaper was piloted by a pilot and sensor operator of a ground station during a 2-hour flight. The system uses a satellite connection for this. The detachment of 40 men will now begin to work on the so-called operational phase of testing and evaluation. The commander of Squadron 306, Lieutenant Colonel Boudewijn Roddenhof, said: "We are testing the aircraft and the ground station, but also the radar and cameras. We use this to test our operational concept in practice and find out where the limits are. We organize the associated procedures as efficiently as possible."
Tumblr media
The squad basically has the rest of the year for this phase. After that, the unit can be used 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. This is possible anywhere in the world. The Dutch Air Force flies the missions from the base in Leeuwarden. From then on, most pilots and sensor operators do their job. Only a small detachment composed of some pilots, sensor operators, mechanics and IT specialists is positioned in the area of deployment. In this case, it is next to Hato airport.
"In the long term, the on-site flight crew only takes care of the takeoff and landing of the aircraft," explains Roddenhof. "The crew in the Netherlands carries out the mission. I hope we can operate in this way at some point in the second half of the year. The infrastructure in Leeuwarden should be ready for this."
The weapons (information) system can observe for a long time, both on land and at sea. This is fully in line with the Ministry of Defense's desire to act in an information-oriented manner. Once the unit with the aircraft is ready to be deployed, it will in principle support the Commander of the Navy in the Caribbean, local authorities and the Coast Guard.
Tumblr media
Roddenhof also said that "one of the main tasks of the Commander of the Navy in the Caribbean is to promote international legal order and stability. We can provide information for this. Based on this, people are better able to determine what resources are deployed during anti-drug operations, for example."
In the next period, two more MQ-9 drones will be deployed in Curaçao and used ?? for the test and evaluation phase. The 4th aircraft is still in the United States. There, she will undergo final acceptance and transfer tests in the next 2 months.
The fourth MQ-9 drone will then be taken to the Netherlands with 2 ground stations. The aircraft will remain stored at Leeuwarden Air Base for a period of time. Both ground stations will go into operation in the second half of the year. From that moment on, the aircraft over the Caribbean can also be controlled from Leeuwarden.

Knightkiller: Anakin and Obi-Wan’s First Adventure
Chapter 9: Crix Spartak
Word Count: 2309 Links: Chapter 1, Table of Contents
*   *   *
Two Years Ago
Shmi sits at a desk by the windowsill in Watto’s shop, composing fake documentation for a shipment to a more legitimate planet. She used to do this kind of thing all the time for Gardulla on Nal Hutta, and she's very good at it. Forging and faking are probably her best skills. She knows legal-speak and formatting; she has a knack for coming up with random numbers and convincing names. When she has a sample of handwriting or writing style from a real person, she can imitate it flawlessly, which she has done for business leaders, crime lords, and even Senators. When she doesn't have anything from anyone real, she invents someone. She has no honest idea what the closest Senator's name really is, but she's invented a self-serious personality and a squiggly autograph that has tricked docking-receivers as far away as Rodia.
Watto has little use of this power of hers for his day-to-day needs, but he sometimes comes up with plots to trick his neighbors using Shmi’s forgeries. And, sometimes, like now, he needs her tricks to get rid of stuff, like these ten tons of toxic waste he ended up with from a bad bet, and that he now wants to pass off as fertilizer and sell to a gullible offworld farmer who won't be able to trace it back to him.
Writing isn't bad work. It’s challenging, and, malicious as it is, she knows she could enjoy it, if she let herself: getting into people's heads, living other lives, for just a short while. It is like solving a puzzle, to figure out how to make other people believe something that isn’t true. The cruel intention of the trickery is not her own, it never is, so she doesn't let that aspect of her work bother her, not anymore.
The only bad part, from her point of view, is the knowledge that her words get to go somewhere that she does not.
And the only good part, really, is that she gets to look at her little boy as she writes. He sits on the desk, next to her cobbled-together, whirring word-processor. He is carefully cleaning a fragile hyper-carburetor with a rag, putrid green gear-soap, and a very serious expression.
Suddenly Crix Spartak pokes head through the window: “Skywalkers!”
“Crix!!” Anakin nearly drops the carb, but of course his reflexes are too fast. He spins around on the desk and grins at the gladiator.
Crix leans on the windowsill -- then lifts his arm quickly from the heated clay, and leans just one calloused elbow on the sill. “Good morning, Ani.” He reaches across and tussles his hair. The boy nearly glows with happiness.
Shmi raises her eyebrows at the man her son admires so much. “Good morning, Crix. Can we help you?”
“D’you wanna go for a spin on the old speeder?”
“YES,” answers Anakin.
“We have a lot of work to do. Not all of us have 6 free days out of 7,” answers Shmi.
“I don't have any work, Mom!”
“I can think of one or two things for you,” she tells him.
“Just a loop round the block, Shmi? You'll be back in a minute.” Crix rests his head on his hand and smiles at her, looking just like a puppy.
She looks at him with a very deliberate expression. “I can't.”
“Take me!” says Anakin, heedlessly.
“Ani! You need to stay with me while I work. I don't want you zooming around, testing the limit on your tracker-bomb.”
“I've calculated for that,” says Crix. “Your tracker-bombs are the same as mine. The loop I planned wouldn't go anywhere near the limit.”
“Please, Mom? I'll work twice as hard.”
“No need for that.”
“I'll bring him back in ten minutes.” Shmi does not look convinced. “Five minutes.”
“Please?” Anakin begs again.
“Ten minutes,” she concedes.
Anakin sets the half-cleaned carb down, crawls off the desk, moves the carb onto a shelf, and climbs back onto the desk and over the word-processor into Crix’s arms.
“I'll bring him right back to you,” says Crix.
“If you don't, I will kill you,” says Shmi.
“I'm more afraid of you than any gladiator alive!” he tells her, laughing.
“Good! You should be!”
“Is that YOUR speeder?!” Anakin interrupts them.
“Yup! -- Well. Not really. But I won it, anyway.”
“It's BEAUTIFUL!”
“Ani!” Her son looks at her. “Keep it down.”
“Sorry!”
“Have fun.”
“I will!”
Crix grins at her, drops a big yellow flower on her desk, and points at it. She rolls her eyes and he blushes and carries Anakin to the speeder to drive him around. Shmi can't compose at all without her little muse at her side. She sits there, worrying, as they drive somewhere out of sight. A minute passes, and she picks up the flower. She doesn't recognize it. It must be an import. He must have won this, too.
They return in just eight minutes.

One Year Ago
Anakin is not supposed to be in the audience of the death match. No one wants him here, not his master, not his mother, not even Crix himself.
But he just had to come. Everyone is talking about it. He’s never known anyone so talked-about, so famous. He feels so proud. Crix is like family. And everyone, all over town, is raving about him, how unstoppable he is, what a bloody, powerful killer he is. And now Crix’s master has rounded up a spectacular squad from faraway worlds, incredible people who are paying huge amounts for the chance to fight him, to fight Crix, to fight his mom’s cool boyfriend.
They say there’s monster-men, like Wookiees, and there’s even a Mando, whatever that means. Everyone is saying they’re crazy. Everyone is saying all his opponents are gonna die, shot by Crix’s bespoke mega-blaster or crushed in Crix’s bare fists. Anakin can picture it, but he can’t really believe it; he has only ever seen those hands used for good. It'll be Crix’s grandest fight yet, maybe even the grandest fight that's ever happened in the universe. No one can keep Anakin away from such a prospect!
He has an average amount of chores, but he sets his droids on them. His newest and, by far, most ambitious droid, C-3PO, isn't much for cleaning or repairing, yet, but he can speak, a little, and write, a little more. His mom bought Anakin a fairy-tale book and assigned him to copy out the letters to improve his handwriting. Anakin sets Threepio on the task instead, and hopes that his mom won't be able to tell.
He does feel guilty, but he's too excited to feel that guilty. He sneaks out without telling her. There was a sandstorm this morning; fortunately it has passed, but the leftover wind keeps kicking sand into the air.
The arena is in a different neighborhood than the slave houses. Anakin lifts up the tarp of a delivery truck and hides in there to hitch a ride. To his surprise, the truck is full of gross little creatures called gizka. They crowd around him and rub their big faces on his legs. He pulls one onto his lap and pets its soft horns and noses.
“I wonder why they're taking you to the arena? ... Oh, I bet the gladiators are gonna slaughter you.”
He finds it kind of funny, in a sad way, that these little animals are so cheerful; that their doom is close, and they have no idea. He pretends his hand is a sword and chops it on their heads, making them coo and squawk. He laughs.
Once he hears a crowd outside, he sneaks out of the truck and hides among the people. He is far from the only urchin running around, but he does not pick pockets. His mom forbids it, and they wouldn't be allowed to keep the money, anyway.
He follows the other children and soon finds the hole in the arena’s wall which they use to sneak in and out. He fits inside the thin crack without too much difficulty, and flits around the dirty, dark area behind the stadium seating. He finds a spot with a good view, between the legs of some pink-skinned person. He leans on the bench and rests his head on his arms, and watches the battles with wide eyes.
He almost doesn't recognize Crix, in a ridiculous helmet with a big feather, but the nasty red scar across his shirtless torso gives his identity away. He's touched that scar; it feels rough and scratchy.
Crix is more than just a killer; he is a performer. He yells and growls and taunts; he makes obscene gestures and even takes bites out of his opponents, both animals and people. Anakin feels shocked and uncomfortable to see him this way, but it does not lessen his affection for him. It only increases his amazement, that one person could contain two such different personalities.
Just as the pilots and farmers had predicted, Crix wins every battle with ease. His main strategy involves shooting to stun, weaken, and disarm his opponents, and then taking them down with glamorous, bloodthirsty wrestling moves. Anakin has never seen such gratuitous and extended violence before, though he has seen plenty of people die, from podrace explosions to mechanical accidents. Until today, the bloodiest thing he ever saw was someone's tracker-bomb explode their head, but some of these deaths far surpass that one. When he starts to feel dizzy, he looks away and takes deep breaths, but he is too invested to look away for long.
Something about all this murder makes him feel cold. But it isn't a real cold. And it isn't nearly as bothersome as this heat or this wind. He rests his sweaty forehead on his arms and swallows his own spit, but it is a weak comfort. The bench shakes under his arms as the audience bangs their feet on it. Anakin marvels at their energy. He wishes he was having as much fun as they are. He really is trying to enjoy himself, and he sort of is. The thrill of it all is similar to podracing, and the triumphs are satisfying. He supposes he will grow into liking it.
After forty minutes of this action, the host announces the next opponent -- the Mando, Chahlee Tiango. Anakin watches the helmeted warrior posture and pose as the audience frantically cheers and boos.
The little boy is starting to feel bored. This would be much more exciting if they were flying around on fast ships, not shooting and punching each other. The only real difference anymore is the color of the blood. But Chahlee looks like a human, meaning he'll just bleed red, which isn't anything new.
Anakin looks at Crix, whose helmet cracked in half in the last battle. Now that his face is visible, Anakin can enjoy his confident smile. He wishes his mom were here to see her boyfriend winning so much. He supposes she would hate it.
As Anakin's thoughts wander, the audience jumps to its feet and screams uproariously. Anakin fastens his eyes back on the battle.
Crix was shot right in the chest. He crumples. A wave of sand lifts from the ground and nearly covers him, like a blanket, hiding him, as if he were never there. Tiango takes a gleeful lap around the arena.
The audience is screaming far too loudly to hear anything from the announcer. The bench is shaking too much to remain a suitable armrest. Anakin stands up straight and stares ahead.
The pink legs that had framed Anakin's view now jump and move around with everyone else, obscuring the arena with cloaks and pants and boots. The other children in this hideaway start moving around, their own views also disrupted, trying to find better spots. Some of them move in front of Anakin. He lets them. He backs off further into the shade.
“Crix…” His initial shock starts to wear away, and he feels tears cross his parched face. “You were supposed to win! They all said you would!”
He had to lose eventually. No one can win every time. Mom told me he would lose, sooner or later. Everyone dies. It's okay.
It really doesn't feel okay. But this feels like podracing, too. Failing. Losing the game. He has been close to death himself a few times, especially when Sebulba is in the match.
He wipes his eyes and holds his fingers in his ears, which are popping from the terrifying decibel level of this audience. He squints his eyes and waits for the volume to settle and the people to sit back down.
What am I waiting for, though? They'll just continue with Tiango as the new champion. I don't want to watch that.
He makes a half-hearted attempt to get another good view, but one of the other children accidentally brushes up against him, and the feeling of being touched makes him deeply angry. He doesn’t trust these other kids. He doesn’t like them. They can’t understand. That wasn’t their friend who just died. It’s too loud here. And it isn’t going to get quiet. Not for a long time.
He worms out the crack in the arena wall and sees a truck that looks similar to the one he used to get here. He hides under the tarp again -- it is now empty inside. The truck jostles along, though it doesn't take exactly the same route back. It takes Anakin a little closer to home, but then it makes a turn he did not expect. He wonders if the truck will eventually come back around to the slave houses. He has no way of knowing. He fears it will wander out of range of his tracker-bomb. He jumps off the cart and walks the rest of the way home.

Another top 20 albums of 2020
...So I’ve had a really hard time finding a number one this year...It’s likely’ I’ll choose which album I revisited the most although it may not have been my favourite...ANYWAY!!!!...
“...And have I left anything out?” – Albums of 2019
Thank You Scientist – Terraformer: I was going through the “liner notes” of DJ Jazzy Jeff’s ‘The PLAYlist’ project and clicked on the saxophonist Sam Greenfield as I’d recognised his name from a favourite of 2018. I saw that he had played on this ‘Prog Rock’ album. Having dabbled in rock over the years, I jumped on Thank You Scientist’s ‘Bandcamp’ page and pushed ‘Play...and I’m so glad I did!!! This band for me is ‘Dream Theater’ meets ‘The Mars Volta’ in how explorative the music can become. I also found myself head nodding along like a madman. While the album does peak at its centrepiece, the amazing 10 minute instrumental ‘Chromology’, it does pick up again from ‘Life of Vermin’, not at the dizzying heights of earlier on, but enough for a satisfying conclusion. I think would made number 3 of last year’s list...
Alexander Claffy – Claffy II: ...Somehow I missed this despite loving this group’s 2016 album ‘Claffy’, which focused on a romantic break-up. This project feels like a continuation with what sounds like a new love interest coming into the picture. Toward the end of the 5-track project it sounds like Alexander is lamenting his previous partner. Will he be able to fully move on to pastures new? This would probably have made my honourable mentions...
Emmavie – Honeymoon: Towards the end of December, I was in the most AMAZING Neo-Soul room on ‘Clubhouse’ (thank you Shaniss and Shey!!!!), where I not only got to share a few tracks, but was thoroughly schooled with the amount of artists I had yet to check out, or in this case, revisit. Not only were shout outs aplenty for Emmavie, but she also shared a few tracks as well...anyway! This prompted me to check out the ‘Honeymoon’ album. This project for me progresses the UK Soul genre forward by utilising some elements of Broken Beat, a tiny hint of 80s Synth and a spot of Hip-Hop. I love that the interludes go harder than some of the main tracks. This may have made 19...
BlaqueStone – Full Circle: This was shared in THAT Clubhouse room by ‘S. Sweet’, ‘bassist and bandleader for the Neo-Soul outfit ‘Black Folks Don’t Swim?’. ‘Full Circle’ sucked me into that deep, rich Neo-Soul that I still visit every so often. Any tracks that didn’t really stand out for me were MORE THAN MADE UP FOR by the standouts on here. My favourites are ‘Peace of Mind’, ‘Find A Way’ and ‘Only Way Out’. This would’ve got a 16...
Danny Brown – uknowhatimsayin¿: ...I played myself by not checking this out when it released (sometimes I feel cheated by how short albums are these days that I take a while to get to them...). Strong production, great flows and feels like a much lighter note than ‘Atrocity Exhibition’. This might have made 13...
Blue Lab Beats – Voyage: And AGAIN!!!! -_- I missed the EP and the album, both which I thoroughly enjoyed and for me is a strong progression from ‘Xover’. From the airy optimism of tracks like ‘Voyage’ and ‘On & On’, to the soulful hip-hop stylings of ‘Next (Wake Up)’ and ‘What R U Here 4?’, to that insane horn cypher on ‘Stand Up’, ‘Voyage’ peaks time and time again. This may possibly have made my top 3!
Yakul – Getting Late EP: I wasn’t familiar with this group until the group leader James Berkeley featured quite heavily on Incognito’s latest project. My sister had played one of their singles from 2020, ‘Streetlight’, which caused me to look for more of their music. To which I found this 6-track EP. ‘Thoroughly enjoyed and looking forward to more! ‘Past Tense’ and ‘Blossoming’ are standouts for me...
Alfa Mist – Structuralism: Yep! I missed this too...literally JUST AFTER having shared my 2019 list...’Structuralism’ ventures as deep into the keys as its predecessor ‘Antiphon’, but this feels like the stronger project for me. I think I just enjoy the instrumentals more...This may have made 15...
...2020:
20) Dominic J Marshall – Nomad’s Land:
Tumblr media
After a number of more beat-based projects, musician Dominic J Marshall returns with more of a Jazz-led body of work. This time around however, there is a fair amount of singing and freestyle rapping, which doesn’t always work for me. Fortunately the compositions saves and in some cases enhances the singing et al. My favourites are ‘Herb-Lady’, ‘Feeling’, ‘On Time’ and ‘Hypernormalised’...
19) Run The Jewels – RTJ4:
Tumblr media
‘Run The Jewels’ released this project for free! Production-wise, El-P bounces between head-nodding, almost backpacker hip-hop and more synth-led sounds. While I haven't really taken much of the subject matter in (apart from ‘A Few Words For The Firing Squad’), I’m feeling the flows, features and of course, the production. My favourites are ‘Out of Sight’, ‘Goonies vs. ET’ and ‘Never Look Back’...
18) Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes – What Kinda Music:
Tumblr media
I’ve been looking forward to more music from Tom Misch since hearing ‘Geography’. The teaming up with Yussef Dayes has a lot of the tracks feel more explorative; The first half of the album particularly has me picturing spacious landscapes, the drumming bringing visions of some kind of quest to be fulfilled. I haven't revisited this album a lot this year, but it gets stronger for me every time I play it...
17) Mark de Clive-Lowe – Dreamweavers:
Tumblr media
This project is the brainchild of drummer Tommaso Cappellato, features bassist Andrea Lombardini and allows multi-instrumentalist Mark de Clive-Lowe to revisit his musical roots as well as a few of his earlier compositions. A lot of the music on here offers moments of reflection, although it takes moments to bring quite high energy in tracks like ‘Volta Ao Mundo’ and elevation in tracks like ‘Dreamweavers’ and ‘Masina’s World’ (if you got the additional tracks). I loved the cover of ‘Motherland’...
  16) Royce Da 5′9″ – The Allegory:
Tumblr media
The idea behind this project is that most of (if not all) the tracks contain a hidden story or meaning. While a few of the messages went over my head (that or I didn't necessarily agree), I really enjoyed Royce’s flows and rhyme schemes, the features and the production, most of which was handled by Montgomery himself! My favourites are ‘I Don't Age’, ‘Pendulum’ and ‘FUBU’...
15) Duckwrth – SuperGood:
Tumblr media
I checked this out based on a share from Gia from Twitter (I get a fair few recommendations from her...). Hearing ‘Kiss U Right Now’ prompted me to watch the visual album, which REALLY enhanced the experience of the project! ‘SuperGood’ is effectively an opportunity to reflect on those moments in life...where everything is cool (-_-). This doesn’t mean to ignore the stresses life throws at us but to appreciate the good regardless. I feel quite uplifted after playing this album. My favourites are ‘New Love Song’, Super Bounce’, ‘Weekend?’ and the optimistic closer ‘Find A Way’...
14) Nubya Garcia – SOURCE:
Tumblr media
The first minute of the title track on here initially didn’t draw me in to hear more. But when that break came in...I was pretty much hooked. ‘SOURCE’ showcases Nubya’s growth as both a player and a writer/composer, as well as further cementing her place as a standout in this wave of contemporary UK Jazz artists. My favourites are ‘The Message Continues’, ‘Inner Game’ and ‘Boundless Beings’...
13) Ivan Ave – Double Goodbyes:
Tumblr media
I wasn’t privy to this release until much later in the year. I checked this out having really enjoyed 2017′s ‘Every Eye’. The first three tracks felt like a departure from the aforementioned. The slightly stripped down sound wasn’t one I was particularly feeling, but the album picked up for me with ‘Triple Double Love’ onwards. I really related to the subject matter on ‘Guest List Etiquette’ and some of ‘Doobie’s Shout Outs’...
12) Georgie Sweet – Misunderstood:
Tumblr media
My relationship with the Futuristica label is kind of like my relationship with ‘WWE’. I’m really deep into them for a while, then I leave for a while...’then I return. 2020 has been a year where I’ve perused the Futuristica projects deeper than I have in several years. I heard ‘What Have I Done’ and liked the hip-hop tinged Neo-Soul sound enough to check out the full album when it came out. I found the first few tracks pleasant enough and then ‘Sorry’ kicked in! The album then peaked again for me with ‘Half Human’ and stayed pretty consistent until the end. I’d definitely be interested in hearing more from Georgie Sweet in the future...
11) Ego Ella May – Honey For Wounds:
Tumblr media
What a joy to see Ego Ella May return to music over the past few years!! I loved her EPs from the mid 2010s!! ‘Honey for Wounds’ shows a strong progression from her earlier work, taking on a more jazzy element this time around. The album covers themes of current events, love (self- and interpersonal), belonging and self-healing to name a few. ‘Honey For Wounds’ is a fitting album for these times, but will most certainly play well when on mellow, relaxed, or reflective moods...
10) KinKai – A Pennies Worth:
Tumblr media
This was a recommendation from Dan. I’d kind of liked his feature on the Blue Lab Beats album ‘Voyage’ but I didn’t really pay attention until checking this album out. I will say that the soulful hip-hop production sucked me in initially. The production compliments KinKai’s flows and bars really well...
9) Nick Hakim – WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD:
Tumblr media
This was another share from Gia from Twitter. I would best describe this album as ‘Trippy Soul’. The music remains at a slow, almost sleepy pace, but with some welcome progressions. The longer tracks give me the opportunity to get lost in the instrumentals as Hakim’s vocals wane in and out during the vamps and ad-libs. My favourites are ‘BOUNCING’, ‘QADIR’, ‘GODS DIRTY WORK’ and ‘WHOO’...
8) Marie Dahlstrom – Like Sand:
Tumblr media
This was a recommendation from Zoe, who was also in THAT clubhouse room! This album showcases the current direction that the Neo-Soul genre has been going in for a while, crossing over with some RnB elements and pushing that blunt delivery from time to time. ‘Like Sand’ stays at a relatively mellow pace, that for me is great to walk/drive to in the evening. My favourites are ‘Time’, ‘A Loveletter - And improvisation’, ‘I Want You’ and ‘Lullaby’...
7) Deborah Jordan – See In The Dark:
Tumblr media
Deborah Jordan’s third solo album (I think it’s her 7th or 8th album overall) could possibly be her, dare I say it, magnum opus. ‘See In The Dark’ stays generally in the realm of Soul, but ventures into acoustic, hip-hop, broken beat and lo-fi genres. The subject matter covers self-belief, self-doubt, love, the pace of life and loss. The closing track ‘I’ll See You Again’ has become a personal standout for me...
6) Katalyst – Nine Lives:
Tumblr media
I wasn’t privy to this band until World Galaxy Records said to check this out via Bandcamp. ‘Nine Lives’ is a welcome addition to the ever-growing slate of contemporary west coast Jazz albums coming out. This album for me stays at quite an optimistic tone, although the pace varies here and there to allow for the whole band, but particularly the horn section to showcase their versatility. My favourites are ‘BBB’, ‘The Leimert Suite’ and ‘Fitted’...
5) Thundercat – It Is What It Is:
Tumblr media
This album title is easily the most used phrase of 2020 and that was before the handling of the current pandemic (specifically in the West). ‘It Is What It Is’ continues in a similar vein to Thundercat’s previous work ‘Drunk’. The subject matter stays particularly quirky, touching on trying to impress a love/lust interest, friendship and acceptance to name a few. The first third of the album does hint at the more focused direction that Thundercat could move on to. There are still the odd short tracks that don’t quite feel fully fleshed out. This has been a grower for me...
4) Quelle Chris & Chris Keys – Innocent Country 2:
Tumblr media
Quelle Chris returns with previous collaborator Chris Keys to bring us the second season of ‘Innocent Country’. This album is more about the production for me although (again) I’m feeling the bars, flows and features. I particularly enjoyed the celebration of black culture toward the mid-portion of the album...
3) Kev Choice – Social Distancing:
Tumblr media
The effects of the current pandemic inspired musician/emcee Kev Choice to write, record and release this time capsule of a project in the space of a little less than four weeks! ‘Social Distancing’ documents disappointment in the government’s response to the virus (specifically in the states), panic shopping, the effects on families, the self-reflection that time alone at home has offered and messages of staying positive despite everything. Standouts for me are ‘Morning Prayer’, ‘Be Still’, ‘Take Me To Your Leaders’ and ‘Break Me Down’...
2) Derrick Hodge – COLOR OF NOIZE:
Tumblr media
Freda had shared the music video of ‘Heartbeats’, which prompted me to check out this album. Although Hodge on bass is clearly running the show, ‘COLOR OF NOIZE’ features two pianists and two drummers throughout the project. The music for me is like going on a long walk, my thoughts and emotions ranging from guilty, to angry, ultimately to hopeful, all while not really paying attention to how my surroundings have changed until the end...
Tumblr media
1) Butcher Brown – #KingButch:
While this might not necessarily be my favourite of the year, it was (probably) the one I revisited the most. The band’s Trumpeter and (kind of) frontman Marcus Tenney takes on a fair amount of pretty well delivered emceeing throughout ‘#KingButch’. The first third is a funk affair, easing into Jazz after the mellowed out ‘Gum In My Mouth’, those tinges of funk do come and go in the latter thirds though. This was another project I really enjoyed driving to. The closing track ‘IDK’ is one of my favourite tracks of the year...
Honourable Mentions:
Nathan Thomas – Still Water: ‘Another Futuristica release. This project is also on the soulful side but makes the guitar more present on a lot of the songs on here. I did think this would make the list but (as always) there ended up being projects I enjoyed more so...
Samii – Figuring it Out: The 2000Black camp bring singer/songwriter Samii to the forefront for this 4-track EP. Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks bring their signature genre-bending sounds and chord progressions as per...
Mike Blankenship – Living For The Future: This was released in 2015...
Cherise – Paradise (EP): My unofficial favourite project of 2017 was ‘Trope’s 5ive’ by the band ‘Trope’, which Cherise (Adams-Burnett) fronts. So I was quite pleased to find that this had been released. Throughout this 4-track EP, Cherise vocalises over quite a romantic soulful piece, a fairly traditional acoustic track, a grandiose jazz piece, ending with a stripped down orchestral number. The opener is my favourite...
Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks – 6th: 2000Black doing what they do and still doing it well...
Bree Runway – 2000AND4EVA: Bree Runway elevates to Pop star status with her debut high-energy mixtape. This project flows so well; from the head nod energy of ‘Apeshit’, into the burst of electric guitar on ‘Little Nokia’, bringing us back to the poppy hip-hop sounds of ‘ATM’ and beyond. Hopefully we can get our act together by the summer and the music on here can be played where it’s SUPPOSED to be!!!...
Nate Smith – Light and Shadow: While waiting for the release of the next ‘Kinfolk’ project, Nate Smith gives us this short, cinematic collection of pieces, those elements of Jazz, Soul and Hip-hop ever present in Smith’s drumming and all around production. I can play this whole thing through pretty easily...I wonder if this is my unofficial favourite of 2020?...
Bluey – Tinted Sky: This is mostly more of the same from Bluey and (some of) the Incognito camp. I tend to like of a lot of the music they write and play. I do want to shout out the mid-portion of the album and Bluey’s disillusionment with how the UK has handled this pandemic so far was resonant...
Kamaal Williams – Wu Hen: The flow on this project is INSANE!!!! ‘Wu Hen’ realises what Kamaal Williams has been doing with his more recent live shows in such a coherent way!...
Andrew Ashong & Kaidi Tatham – Sankofa Season: Vocalist Andrew Ashong teams up with legend Kaidi Tatham on the music to give us a 30-minute project, covering looking back, love, positivity and encouragement for change...

the disney renaissance films, ranked
9) tarzan (1999)
Tumblr media
let me get a few things straight: 1) i like this movie! and 2) it has the second best soundtrack of any disney movie
however i’m not sure i even consider this a renaissance film. i think its animation is weak compared to the other renaissance flims. i don’t love the story either.
what i do find interesting about this movie (other than the excellent soundtrack) is how dark it is. it’s pretty violent for a disney movie, especially when the villain, clayton, accidentally & graphically hangs himself. most other disney films show the villain vaguely falling to their death, but not this one!
8) aladdin (1992)
Tumblr media
okay i feel really bad about ranking this film so low, but it’s just not my favorite. i LOVE the character of the genie. he’s one of disney’s best characters. however i don’t find aladdin himself that likable! and i hate abu! not a fan of jafar either!
a whole new world is the only standout song on the soundtrack. there’s no standout animation. jasmine deserved better.
7) pocahontas (1995)
Tumblr media
i am pocahontas defense squad. at this point in the list, i truly enjoy all the movies.
let’s get the obvious out of the way: this movie is problematic. they absolutely should not have based the main character off a real person. but i think overall it’s less problematic than you might think: the movie makes it clear that the english were greedy and stole land. they did not make most of them out to be favorable. the romance between pocahontas and john smith is very... questionable (especially the part where pocahontas magically learns to speak english?) but the fact that john smith sails away at the end makes me feel a little better.
so now let’s get a few things straight: 1) the animation is BEAUTIFUL 2) there are many standout songs on the soundtrack, including colors of the wind, just around the riverbend, and most importantly, SAVAGES PART 2 3) meeko is genuinely hilarious
also quick fun fact: this movie came out shortly after the lion king. the walt disney company was expecting pocahontas to be their big movie and devoted most of their resources to this movie instead of the lion king. well let’s just say the lion king outperformed pocahontas at the box office
6) hercules (1997)
Tumblr media
this is the first movie i saw in theaters! so here’s what i like about this movie:
a great story! a god living on earth, not knowing he’s a god, presumed dead by his god parents? the drama of it all!
AMAZING soundtrack. the muses add an element to the soundtrack disney hasn’t done before. some of the best music of any disney movie. my favorite is i won’t say i’m in love.
lots of color in the animation! i love a good colorful movie.
hades is one of disney’s best villains. disney managed to make him likable but not sympathetic. this is a different approach than many of the other disney movies at this time
5) hunchback of notre dame (1996)
Tumblr media
i am OBSESSED with this movie and let me tell you why:
first and foremost, it is so dang dark! the movie starts out with judge claude frollo trying to drown a baby in front of a church. so there’s that. frollo ends up “raising” quasimodo and just emotionally abusing him. quasimodo is like: i’m ugly :( and then frollo burns down paris because he wants to fuck esmeralda. many believe this movie wouldn’t have been made today because it’s so dark. however disney was so successful at this point they were just like *shrug emoji* let’s release a movie about catholic guilt.
the soundtrack is amazing. it’s so dramatic! hellfire is one of the standout songs just because it is so messed up. this entire movie is so messed up. i love it
4) the little mermaid (1989)
Tumblr media
there she is! the movie that started this all! disney was producing straight trash until our man men ron clements and john musker came to save the day and directed this fine film.
like i said, this is the movie that kicked off the renaissance era. it revived the idea of a disney princess. it revived the idea of an animated movie with a strong soundtrack. it revived the idea of putting effort into producing quality animated films! the importance of this film cannot be stated enough. along with colorful animation it has a great soundtrack. under the sea is one of my favorite songs ever.
3) mulan (1998)
Tumblr media
one of my all time favorite movies. perfection. mulan is such a strong character. probably my favorite main character from any disney movie. her story has such a strong feminist message.
the animation? beautiful! the villain: legitimately so scary. the animal sidekicks?: i would die for them.
the songs in the movie are so so beautiful. reflection and i’ll make a man out of you are two of the most iconic disney songs. lea salonga and donny osmond knocked this out of the park. my only gripe is there should be more songs.
anyway “the greatest gift and honor is having you as a daughter”
2) beauty and the beast (1991)
Tumblr media
honesty hour i like mulan better BUT this movie is just so so important to disney history. this was disney’s time to prove itself. the little mermaid was excellent but could they do it again? turns out they could!
this soundtrack is so special to me. it was the last thing howard ashman composed before dying of complications from aids. he never got to see the final product. every song is perfect.
the animation is beautiful. the character design!!! the animators did an excellent job with lumiere, cogsworth, and mrs potts. the managed to make gaston so hot.
now for some fun facts: disney had been thinking about making this movie since the 1930s. they sat on this one for a long time. i’m glad they made it at the time they did, when they had the budget and talent to make it truly special.
an unfinished version of this movie was shown at the new york film festival. even though the animation wasn’t complete, it got a standing ovation. that’s how great this movie is.
1) the lion king (1994)
Tumblr media
not just my favorite disney movie, but my favorite movie of all time. i love this movie so so much. i watch it like once a month lol
what makes this movie so compelling is the story. simba lived for so long thinking he was responsible for mufasa’s death!!! the amount of tragedy and drama is unparalleled. my favorite scene is when rafiki find simba as an adult and is like he lives in you” omg the drama
however this movie manages to be humorous as well, thanks to timone and pumba. they aren’t introduced until like 30 minutes into the movie but manage to make the biggest impression. i would die for them
the soundtrack is by far disney’s best. my mans elton john knocked it out of the park. every song is a bop. the instrumental music playing in the background is insane. it’s so dramatic/perfect
lastly, THE ANIMATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it’s unparalleled. it’s so colorful. the animals are drawn beautifully. the backgrounds are jaw dropping. i cannot get over it
***rescuers down under was not included on this list for reasons that should be obvious

The Death of a Friend
‘Death waits for no man’- Markus Zusak
Tumblr media
You can never prepare yourself for death. He doesn’t wait until you’re ready, he could care less about your last goodbyes. It doesn’t matter if your good or bad, young or old, death is indiscriminate by nature. Death waits for no man, and he certainly didn’t wait for my friend Joe, who died before he could truly live.
I first met Joe after packing my bags and flying to China with dreams of becoming a teacher. Having arrived at the school a day before me, Joe and I became fast friends; both from England, freshly graduated, and severely out of our element, we found comfort in the familiarity of each other. Genuine and uncomplicated, the friendship blossomed over our shared endeavour to navigate the unknown. Eventually more friends were added on, and we established our own little squad, unbreakable and ready to take on whatever China could throw at us. We laughed together, celebrated each other’s achievements, and provided a shoulder to cry on.
Grief had always been an ambiguous concept to me; never having lost someone I was close to before, my experience and understanding of it derived primarily from TV. This ultimately made it difficult for me to empathise with others, and aside from the customary “I’m sorry for your loss”, my thoughts didn’t venture much further than that. That’s not to say I was some sort of emotionless psychopath, of course I sympathised for those going though such tragedy; believe me when I tell you I was a blubbering wreck for the full 2 hours of P.S. I Love You. But my emotions always had a shallowness to them, which eventually shifted to scepticism. Too often when I witnessed grief on TV it seemed exaggerated to me; the heartache taken and twisted into a caricature-esque illustration of its original self. I looked at it as an over-saturation of real-life, reserved for the big screen to justify drawn-out movie sequences where the main character screams and rages of the injustice of it all while melancholic piano plays softly in the background
Tumblr media
It was only after experiencing grief personally that I realised wherein my derision lied. Oftentimes movies and TV shows will portray a character in denial or anger, but fail to show the mental journey that has taken place within the character’s mind to lead them there. Subsequently, to someone ignorant of the psychological proceedings that occurs internally when processing the death of a loved one, it can seem as if these reactions simply manifest out of thin air, with no rhyme or reason to them. Though I can only speak for myself, this failing stripped the emotions of its sincerity, making it harder to empathise with.
‘We begin to live again, but we cannot do so until we have given grief its time.’- Kubler Ross’s ‘The 5 Stages of Grief’ (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance)
In Kubler Ross’s ‘The 5 Stages of Grief’ (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance) he discusses the mental dealings behind the core emotions we feel while grieving, including its reason, importance to the grieving process, and how we move past it.  He emphasises that ‘there is not a typical response to loss as there is no typical loss. Our grief is as individual as our lives’. My experience with grief was similar to others in many ways, yet personal disposition, circumstances, and the nature of our friendship meant that my understanding and relationship with grief was wholly my own.
Tumblr media
‘This first stage of grieving helps us to survive the loss’
When I first heard the news from a friend over the phone, I was in another country at the time. My denial didn’t manifest in the form of ‘I can’t believe this has happened’ but rather ‘I don’t believe this has happened’. What I mean by this is that, it’s not that I couldn’t accept the truth, but that I actively choose not to. It created a divide in my head, deep down I was aware that I was only lying to myself, but I did it anyway because there was no other option for me at that point. I did whatever I could to strengthen this pipe dream; I told myself that my friend sounded too composed over the phone (he was in shock), that it was just some sick prank they were playing, that motorcycle accidents don’t happen to 21-year-old’s who haven’t even been given the chance to live yet. Me and Joe worked together, and I remember checking the work chat every day thinking that until they make an announcement, there’s still a chance it’s all fake. The physical distance between me and Joe made it so much easier to create a mental distance between myself and the truth. It became a case of seeing is believing, and until someone could provide me with physical evidence of his death, I would carry on this ruse.
During my young teens, I was a sucker for the so-called ‘Girl Power’ storyline. Movies that pitted the strong-willed wall-flower against the sheltered and bird-brained female antagonist was my bread and butter. I had always envisioned myself as that strong-willed wallflower, a survivor at the core who could face whatever life throws at her head on, as if anything less would be a weakness. I grew to realise how utterly delusional of a mind-set that was, and appreciate the importance of allowing yourself to be emotionally vulnerable. However with all that said, it still makes me feel awkward to this day when I look back on my reaction to first hearing the news and think about how delusional I must have appeared to others. Eventually you just have to accept that, as Kubler- Ross states: ‘There is a grace in denial’, it is not a weakness one has to overcome, but rather a coping mechanism that allows us to handle only what we can.
Tumblr media
‘Anger is the emotion we are most used to managing’
When I returned home, I could no longer deny what was right in front of me any longer; I could see my friend’s absence, and so I was forced to believe it. It was at this point when the beginnings of anger started to kick in. There was no clean-cut shift from denial to anger, one emotional state didn’t suddenly swoop in and knock the other off its pedestal. In his essay, Kubler emphasises that there is no ‘linear timeline in grief’. In my case, anger was born from my denial, it stemmed from no longer being able to keep denying what was now undisputable. I started to project this anger onto other people, getting annoyed when they openly discussed the details of what happened at work. What is there to talk about? He's gone, where was everyone constantly shoving the fact down my throat? To this day I still don’t know the full story of the accident because I was so against discussing it. All I wanted to do was bury my head in the sand, and it seemed like no one was going to let me do it in peace.
My anger started to turn ugly, I remember seeing a post someone made about how much Joe meant to them and thinking: why would you post this? You weren’t even that close to him? It felt disingenuous, like suddenly people were popping up out of the woodworks to add their two cents and make it all about them. I saw this attitude reflected in others around me, the occasional sly comment, a judgemental pause of silence, as if because you were closer to Joe it allowed you to police how others grieve and to what degree.
Tumblr media
*Dusts off psychology A-level certificate*
Building any kind of relationship as a foreigner in China is a social experiment in its own right. Unable to communicate with the locals, unfamiliar of the cultural norms, and oftentimes going days without seeing an foreigner you haven’t already met, you begin to heavily rely upon the few friends you do make in China. Add on to this a 6-hour time differences and the Great VPN Firewall of China restricting accessibility to family and friends back home, you find yourself living in a social bubble. This same isolationism can be seen in reality shows like Love Island and Big Brother, which force their contestants into environments with little to no outside communication. The resulting effects is that relationships, both romantic and platonic, develop at an abnormally fast rate; it made the few months that I knew Joe much more potent than was normal. In such a short space of time Joe had carved a space for himself in my life: he was a colleague, friend, and brother all rolled into one. If I was stressed over something I came to him, if I was proud of something I came to him. But this still didn’t change the fact that, in the grand scheme of things, we were only a chapter in each-others stories, and so when it came to mourning his death, an overwhelming sense of inadequacy and guilt began to emerge.
In the same way that I judged others, I was judging myself. I began to question the validity of my own feelings, whether the short time I knew him justified such strong heartache or if I, like so many of the movies I watched before, simply up-playing a role I thought was appropriate. Did I deserve to feel so sad over someone I barely knew? Who was I to have enjoyed his last few months on earth while his family and lifelong friends couldn’t. When I was sat next to his family at the funeral, I felt like an imposter.
Tumblr media
‘Acceptance is often confused with the notion of being “all right” or “OK” with what has happened’-Kübler-Ross & David Kessler
I wish someone had told me beforehand that acceptance does not always equal peace, sometimes it just leads to more heartache and depression. The comforting warmth of denial and distracting heat of anger had been rudely ripped away and what am I left with now? The cold hard truth, what a scam.
Accepting that my friend was gone didn’t suddenly make it easier to digest, if anything it made me question everything. Though it seems obvious, it wasn’t his death that was the hardest to grasp, it was the idea that he no longer existed, or at least not in the way he once did.
Kubler describes this stage as ‘accepting the reality that our loved one is physically gone and recognizing that this new reality is the permanent reality’. In the end, no matter what you believe, notions about an afterlife are all well and good, but it doesn’t change the fact that those passed are no longer in the here and now. How can a walking, talking person, with their own thoughts and dreams for the future, now simply be food for worms? How can someone who was previously physical only now exist in the memories of others? I didn’t want the responsibility of keeping someone alive through only my mind and a few pictures.
Tumblr media
‘‘There is not a typical response to loss as there is no typical loss. Our grief is as individual as our lives’
If there is one thing I took away from this experience, it’s the understanding that grieving is a fiercely personal act, idiosyncratic to the individual. I witnessed friends who cried for weeks on end after hearing the news, while others did so only once. I saw friends find comfort in the company of others, and those who found peace through solitude. Some gained a stronger relationship with God, whereas some started to question everything that they once believed.  I realised that the cause behind my judgement of all these tv shows was the same thing that made me condemn those who posted their feelings on social media: I am a very private person, and so these open displays of emotion didn’t relate to me. That’s not to say that I didn’t feel the exact same emotions as everyone else did, but when it comes to my emotions, I’m an introvert at heart. I don’t post my feelings on social media, I rarely cry in front of others, and big public displays of affection only make me cringe. If given the option, I will always choose to implode than explode. This ultimately lead me to my third and final revelation: Everyone grieves in their own way, there is no right, cookie-cutter, one size fits all way to grieve. In the end, it doesn’t matter how you grieve or how long for, it’s about allowing yourself to experience the emotion and working through it to one day achieve some form of equilibrium to this new reality.  It’s a journey we all must walk, and one we can only do ourselves.

In addition to the fact that Moana boasts the most karaoke-commendable soundtrack, but on the other hand it's apparently one of the most women's activist Disney films in Disney history. At the point when the island starts to gradually pass on, she heads out on an intense crucial secure her kin while wrangling mythical being Maui (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, no less) to direct her on an activity pressed journey to cross the untamed sea and return a stone he'd taken that would spare mankind. Moana offers rest from the customary Disney account in light of the fact that at its middle is a valiant lady of shading whose story has nothing to do with finding a sovereign yet, rather, a ton to do with insubordination and autonomy. It's intersectional third-wave woman's rights in a child's motion picture.

There's no sovereign or romantic tale right now—and that is reviving.

2. Marvel Woman
Lady Gadot's interpretation of Wonder Woman tells the story of Diana, an Amazonian warrior who understands her maximum capacity when she embarks to battle for what she has confidence in, notwithstanding that leaving her island is verboten. A lot to her mom's consternation, she begins preparing youthful—and she develops into the most proficient warrior of her property. In the wake of sparing a pilot who crashes close by and discovering that the outside world is racked by struggle, Diana escapes home to battle for the individuals. 3. Recollect the Titans
Recollect the Titans may be one of the most particularly American movies out there—it's about interracial cooperation during a period of exacerbated racial strain. What's more, it depends on the genuine story of the 1971 Virginia state football champions from T.C. Williams High School. The neighborhood educational committee had to coordinate an all-dark school with an all-white school, and the very establishment of football's convention was put to a definitive test when clogged pore mentor, Herman Boone, was contracted to lead the group. Highly contrasting colleagues much of the time conflicted in racially spurred clashes, however after thorough rushes to the Gettysburg burial ground and an inspirational discourse on regard, the group accomplishes racial amicability and, together, an undefeated season as well. Their encounters demonstrate that achievement comes when we regard each other and work together, reasonably.

In any case, when Elsa inadvertently freezes Anna's heart, as well, the main fix to spare her is a demonstration of genuine romance. From the outset she thinks a kiss from her smash, Prince Hans, could restore her, yet he ends up being both manipulative and deadly. In trust plot-contort design, the demonstration of adoration that at last spares Anna is bouncing before Hans' sword when he attempts to kill Elsa. This 1996 adjustment of a Roald Dahl work is about a talented young lady compelled to endure unrefined guardians and a domineering jerk of a school head, Agatha Trunchbull. Matilda's name alone is a Germanic Gothic inference of the words quality and fight, and she's evidence that "battling like a young lady" signifies battling like a virtuoso.

A review of everything we've got so far...
(Dammit. I posted this on Reddit like a month ago but forgot to post it here. Sorry!)
Hi everyone! I thought it’d be good to summary all the small Kabaneri news we have gotten so far in one single post. After all, we have been given a lot of those and it’s always good to have everything properly explained. In this post, I’ll be talking about the new and old characters, trains, weapons, kabane and scenarios. Oh, and about the countdown on the game’s website too. If you want to go straight to that part, you can just go to the bottom of this post.
But before I actually get there, it’s important to clear some things up. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that all the recent news are for S2, others saying they are for the game, and others saying they are for the movie. So let me make this clear: so far, there isn’t any confirmation of a second season. Yet. Back in 2016, after the anime aired, a 2018 project was confirmed by the official Twitter account. Turns out that 2018 project was the game, even though people said it’d be S2, back in 2016. All we know is that there’ll be a new Kabaneri movie, and a Kabaneri game. No S2. So put that idea aside, for now at least.
Now, even for the movie, there isn’t much information to mention here. All we were given regarding that topic was just a very poor PV, and that’s about it. This means that all the information I’m leaving below is about the game (though that should be obvious enough since it’s the Kabaneri game Twitter account that has been posting all of it…).
Here is the trailer for the Kabaneri movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvIVRc_yg0E
And here’s the trailer for the Kabaneri game (directly linked from the game’s official YouTube channel): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuF46TqOpTM
Tumblr media
Now that this is all cleared up, I’ll be talking about everything that was revealed so far for the game “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Revolt- Beginning Tracks”. Reminder that most of this information was revealed on Twitter, which means there isn’t really much to say. This obviously leads to a lot of speculation, but for now I’ll just leave what we objectively know. With that being said, I’ll start by talking about the new and old characters.
New and old characters
New characters
Kaname 要(カナメ)(声優:小松昌平), voiced by Shohei Komatsu
Kaname is one of the main new characters for this game. I’d risk to say he’s the protagonist of this game, judging by the main visual, but then again, I won’t go ahead speculating in this post. Kaname is an orphan from the Katsuki Station(勝木駅). He treasures his family the most, and it is said by the official game Twitter account that he’s going to be an important character.
Tumblr media
Haya 葉矢(ハヤ)(声優:黒沢ともよ), voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa
Just like Kaname, Haya is an orphan from the Katsuki Station. She plays more of an older sister role, and she’s very good at getting along with everyone.
Tumblr media
Chihiro 千尋(チヒロ)(声優:梅原裕一郎), voiced by Yuichiro Umehara
Just like Haya, Chihiro does play an older brother role. Again, being from Katsuki Station, he valorizes his family and would do anything to protect them, even the worst things possible. He’s described as a gently and strictly watching presence, as well as being absolutely fine to trust in.
Tumblr media
Yatori 八鳥(やとり)
There isn’t much information about Yatori, other than that she’s a new character and clearly has a function related to the stations and Hayajiros. The staff mentions how beautiful she is, but that’s about it.
Tumblr media
Kouhime 香姫(こうひめ)
Just like with Yatori, there isn’t much information about Kouhime. Other than saying she’s the most beautiful Kabaneri character, the staff only mentions that she’s a princess. Princess of Mikawa.
Tumblr media
Kanou 狩能 (かのう)
This one character doesn’t appear in the game PV, and all we know is that he’s the owner of that new pile bunker weapon (which I’ll be talking about in the weapons section). He’s apparently a samurai, and is a man of big body and heart. Other than that, it is mentioned that he’ll be an important character in the game. Notice that he holds a master key…
Tumblr media
Blondie (let’s call her that…)
Now, this character... She does appear in the game PV, but we literally know nothing about her. Not even her name. She does appear in the game’s main visual, and right in the middle of it, so I guess it’s safe to say that she’ll have an important role in the story. She also appears in the game PV standing right next to Kaname, holding a gun, on top of a train surrounded by kabane, so she clearly fights the kabane too.
Tumblr media
2. Old characters
Nothing really has changed for the old characters, other than their outfits. Some of them… Aren’t as good as S1’s, but they’re not bad by any means! Well then, let’s get into it!
Ikoma
Maybe some of you didn’t know, so let me clear that up for you right now. Yes, Ikoma has now a mechanical arm.And if that doesn’t sound cool enough to you yet, be ready because there’s more. He’ll also be able to switch from his mechanical arm to his weapon. Isn’t that, like, REALLY cool? I personally love the idea!
Mumei
As you can see, only thing that really changed was her jacket, which I honestly think that exploded with Biba’s Kokujou. Mumei still looks damn good though.
Kurusu
Remember how Kurusu partially destroyed his outfit after falling off that train with the green haired scientist (IIRC his name was Souma)? Right. As you can see, the staff basically tried to fix his clothes without giving him new ones. Ayame is broke and can’t even get her boyfriend some new and even more badass clothes.Shame!
Ayame
Well, there isn’t much to say here. She looks exactly the same. What a beauty!
Tumblr media
Trains
Shunjou 駿城
So far, this is the only Hayajiro that we have information of. We know there are at least two new Hayajiros for the game: this blue one, and the other red one (both seen in the game PV). So we’ll have information about the other one soon or later. For now, let’s talk about this Shunjou. Here we can have a look at both its inside and outside. Looks cool! The main Kabaneri game squad will be riding on it.
Tumblr media
Weapons
1. Ikoma’s piercing gun (1)
As you can see, nothing really has changed. Ikoma is still going to be using the spring to fire his gun, which means he only needs to extend his arm to do it. Again, reminder that he’s going to be able to switch between his mechanical arm and his piercing gun. That’s so cool!
2. Piler bunker (2)
This weapon belongs to Kanou, the character presented above, and it’s called a piler bunker. "Tool or weapon composed of a pneumatic or hydraulic piston connected to a spiked shaft and recoil springs. Uses rapid compression to drive the piston forward which in turn drives a spike into an object, in a matter similar to that of a pneumatic hammer (jackhammer), only the spike goes far into the object and then retracts quickly, readying itself for another strike." This is all we know about it, but oh well, it looks cool.
3. Haya’s guns (3)
There isn’t much to say about her guns. I personally like how small they are, which matches with the cute vibes Haya gives us. I guess they are a smaller version of Mumei’s guns…? I wonder.
4. This… Needle thing? (4)
Honestly I’m not sure if this should be put in the guns section. Honestly… Don’t ask me what this thing is, because I don’t know either. It’s so weird… There aren’t any tweets talking about it (so far at least), but this thing is right at the center of the game main visual, so it’s got to be important. It has also appeared in the game trailer, but it’s still hard to tell what it really is. What do you guys think?
5. Kaname’s guns (5)
Apparently called "Steam Knuckle Derringer" (correct me if I'm wrong). They’re meant to be shot at long distance targets, and the knife used for short distance targets. Kinda similar to Mumei’s gun, I’d say.
6. Holsters (6)
Nothing much to say here, other than both Haya and Kaname seem to use this type of holsters for their guns.
Tumblr media
Kabane
Well… I think the first thing we can all point out here is that all these new Black Smokes are insect shaped. Image number 2 being a spider, 3 a grasshopper, and 4 a frog. As for the other images, we can see some other weird Black Smokes… Truth is that all of them lead to huge speculation!
Tumblr media
Scenarios
As for the scenarios, I tried to divide them into two different categories. First one being battle fields and destroyed stations, and the second one being actual functional stations. Let’s start with the former.
As you can see, most of them are totally messed up by the kabane. We can even see a kabane nest in the first picture…Which is terrifying. We can also see images with Mumei apparently exploring these same abandoned places, and not only through her clothes but also through the images themselves, we can tell it’s Winter season (though that a six month time skip happened in the Kabaneri recap movies already…).
Tumblr media
As for the latter category,
Katsuki Station's foreground. This station is known for being a poor one, where people even have to resell the garbage they find around. Kaname, Haya and Chihiro are from this station. (1)
Again, we can see Katsuki Station and its garbage collecting work, in some mountain. (2)
The actual reselling of the garbage found in the mountain, and a man evaluating it to know how much it is worth for. (3)
“Katsuki Station – Night Stand”. The group is having a juicy night meal. The original tweet mentions it’s certainly not rice, since that’d be a treasure considering Kabaneri’s world. (4)
Market of Sanashita Station, a lively and happy station. (5)
Station in the historical province of Hida. (6)
Sanashita Station. (7)
Sanage Station. Sanage is a medium-sized station in Mikawa. (8)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you all may image, some of the station names might be wrong, if not totally wrong. All of them. Who knows… It’s hard to translate Japanese station names. XD
I’ve been collecting most of this information from the Kabaneri game account’s tweets, as well as picking some references from Inner Chorus (on Tumblr) https://innerchorus.tumblr.com/ and many other big Kabaneri fans who are thirsty for news and details and all that. Apologies if there are any mistakes above, and please let me know if there are any so I can correct those.
For now, all we can do is to wait. A countdown in the official game website had started something like a month ago. Once that countdown ended, we were all expecting a new Kabaneri game trailer, but nope. All given to us was just even more information...: the Kabaneri game will be exhibited at the Tokyo Game Show 2018 event, happening from September 20th to 23rd. Additionally, more information is expected to be revealed in the middle of September. For now, there's new merchandise that can be found on the game's website.
Here’s some of the information added to the website regarding the TGS 2018 event:
WIT STUDIO's animation opening to be first publicly revealed
Gameplay pre-release
Kabaneri of Iron Castle - Ran (the game) final information release
"Kabaneri of Iron Fortress ~ Unato Kessen ~" information release
This is all we have for now. Can’t wait for the news coming at the end of the month! :D
On a side note, if you want to get all the updates on first hand, feel free to join our Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Discord fan server. We post there all the news as soon as they are released, and we even have a few leaks, sometimes. :P

Good Morning fellow gamers and Happy New Year. We made it once again and of course it is a New Year to look at some titles that you might want to keep on your radar. So, this Beast gamer right here is here to tell you my personal list of games that I am keeping a close eye out on. Just a heads up that some links will take you to Play-Asia.com which helps us in the long run. All right shameless plug over lets get to that list.
Anthem First Up!
This is one of the highly anticipated games that also has me worried. You know that feeling when something looks damn good and the developers show actual gameplay from jump. It just looks way too good to be true, but I am still all in since this might be the game I am looking for. It has that nice Iron Man feel to it and a hint of Fantasy as each soldier has their own special abilities.
This new Bioware title will be available on Xbox One X, PlayStation 4 Pro and PC. Thankfully you obtained more time with a February 22, 2019 release date.
“The game features a shared-world where players can either play it solo or through a co-operative multiplayer. Team up with up to four members of your squad and fight savage beasts and ruthless marauders. Explore lost ruins and encounter massive, world-altering terrain occurrences.”
youtube
Looking forward to that and of course we have to share some of the features.
Venture into danger – In this shared-world action-RPG, you and your friends are Freelancers – the bold few with the courage to leave civilization behind, explore a landscape of primeval beauty, and confront the dangers you find
Unite with friends – Up to four players band together to take on whatever perils you discover as a heroic team. As your friends support you in your journey, so do you victories and rewards benefit your friends
Rise to any challenge – Wield an arsenal of Javelin exosuits, each equipped with unique weapons and abilities. Customize them with gear you earn and craft, then use them to fly, leap, and climb through a contiguous open world
Chart your path – Experience massive, world-altering occurrences like Shaper Storms. Fight savage beasts and ruthless marauders. Delve forgotten ruins as you seek to defeat the forces plotting to conquer humanity
Control your fate – Your power grows with every step into the unknown. Whether plunder, revenge, or gory lures you onward, your choices will irrevocably change you – and the world around you.
Be sure to pre-order here.
Devil May Cry 5
This is a long lineage going back from the PS2 days and now with the fifth installment will it live up to the legacy?  It was a hit  or miss with the DMC titles, I am one that enjoyed the reboot which had more of a badass western feel towards it. The combat has always been my favorite and of course the monster designs were top notch.
Several years after the Order of the Sword incident… An unusual phenomenon suddenly appears in Red Grave City. A gigantic tree pierces through the surface in the middle of town, attacking with roots that drain the poor citizens of their blood. Young Devil Hunter Nero races into Red Grave aboard the mobile Devil May Cry vehicle with his partner Nico, a self-styled “artisan of arms” who provides Nero with his new weapons.
Nero seeks to recover many things in Red Grave: Lost pride…stolen power…and a man left behind. Brandishing his beloved Red Queen sword and custom Blue Rose revolver, Nero plunges into Red Grave, routing the demon hordes as he makes for the menacing phenomenon in the city center. All the while, a new power crackles through his right arm. The all-new anti-demon arm known as the Devil Breaker. “Not bad…let’s see what this can do!”
Now there is a playable demo on Xbox One, but many of you might not have that chance, so check out this video.
youtube
Features:
Legendary action series returns – The 16 million unit selling series is back with original Director Hideaki Itsuno at the helm of development
A battle of good and evil – A demonic invasion begins with the seeds of a “demon tree” taking root in Red Grave City. This hellish incursion attracts the attention of the young demon hunter, Nero, an ally of Dante who now finds himself without his demonic arm, the source of much of his power. The supernatural family drama also continues as Dante, the Son of Sparda, seeks revenge for his brother’s corruption and mother’s murder
High octane stylized action – Featuring three playable characters each with a radically different stylish combat play style as they take on the city overrun with demons
Groundbreaking graphics – Developed with Capcom’s in-house proprietary RE engine, the series continues to achieve new heights infidelity with graphics that utilize photorealistic character designs and stunning lighting and environmental effects
Take down the demonic invasion – Battle against epic bosses in adrenaline-fueled fights across the over-run Red Grave City
Demon hunter – Nero, one of the series main protagonists and a young demon hunter who has the blood of Sparda, heads to Red Grave City to face the hellish onslaught of demons, with weapons craftswoman and new partner-in-crime, Nico

You will be able to fight your own demons come March 8th, 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Be sure to pre-order here.
Dead or Alive 6
This is a personal favorite of mine actually being a fan since day one since it has an interesting fight system. The counter attacks are one of the best in any fighting game and going back and forth is where the challenge begins. So what do we expect for this sixth installment and hopefully it is not a cash grab like Core Fighters was.
youtube
After a sinister incident in a village… Kasumi, a successor of the legendary Mugen Tenshin ninja clan, abandoned her clan and became a “runaway ninja,” secretly living in a hermitage in a mountain village. Meanwhile, Helena Douglas, president of the new DOATEC, is involved in an incident…And yet another…. A so-called genius chuckles at a mysterious light emitting an aura… Behind a quiet time, a sinister plan is set in motion. The passing days are about to be unduly overturned due to an open desire. As Kasumi writes to her mother, her pen overflows with hesitation. …It’s not over yet.
Features:
Break Gauge System – A Special Attack meter new to the series. use the Break Gauge to Execute new tactics such as a Break Blow or a Break hold.
Break Blow – A Break Blow is a special skill which has a powerful smash while parrying an enemy strike.
Break Hold – A Break Hold is the ultra hold which returns upper, middle, and lower attacks.
Fatal Rush – Fatal Rush is a powerful combo attack of up to four neatly animated punches and kicks making a first time player look like an expert.
DOA Central – The new DOA CENTRAL mode is open! Customize your favorite characters before joining the fight!
Danger Zones – These are special regions found in most stages that cause heavy damage when a fighter gets knocked into them. Danger Zones can range from basic walls to blockbuster explosions and careening cars. Some Stages also have Danger Zones within the Floors as well.
Rumble Danger – If a fighter is blown into the crowd, the spectators around the edge of the ring can push the fighter back in and will lose their balance and stagger. This creates an opening for the perfect chance to attack.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
It is not Tenchu but it is as close as we are going to get and I am impressed. Saw Sekiro first at the Sony Experience last year and I was quite amazed by the action and story lore that goes with it.

One-armed wolf – Play as a highly talented shinobi in the service of a young lord raised in isolation. After suffering defeat at the hands of a shadowy Ashina samurai seeking the unique heritage of your master, the two of you are separated. Deep in the mountains, in a dilapidated temple, you reawaken to your fate. You must take back your master and exact revenge on your enemy at all cost.
Hard to the core – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a hard-core game worthy of the name FromSoftware. Miyazaki designed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice this way! Fans of FromSoftware will find the gameplay challenging, yet fun and rewarding. The quality of combat, level of challenge, and creative enemies and bosses are something that can only be found in a FromSoftware title.
Reimagined world – This reimagining of Japanese aesthetic blends a withered, yet vivid, world of the late 1500s Sengoku Japan as the age of warring states nears its end. Witness a world brought to its knees by constant bloodshed; a ravaged world on the brink of destruction. Explore these environments, rich with FromSoftware’s intricate design and steeped with secrets to discover.
Larger than life enemies – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice features fantastical fearsome enemies and bosses. Players will battle with larger-than-life enemies that will test their mettle in a variety of situations. From hidden enemies to discover to 3D combat, the quality of creative enemies and bosses are something that can only be found in a FromSoftware title.
Resurrection – Used as an opportunity for a tactical retreat or to deceive an enemy and go on the counter-offensive, this new combat strategy allows players to resurrect on the spot, even after a hasty death.
A fantastical, dark, and twisted new gameplay experience awaits you in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice. It is developed by the notable dev team, From Software, and published by Activision. It is an action-adventure game combined with RPG elements. The game is directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and is played in a third-person perspective.
March 22nd, 2019 is your day to deal with the Shadows so pre-order here.
Fae Tactics: The Girl who Destroyed the World
Indie titles are always on the list because the creators have a lot of heart and catches my eye.
Team Vs Speed – Endless Fluff Games went back and forth on this idea on how their game would be. Luckily they settled on a Hybrid style makes it the best of both worlds. “The combat is still locked into rounds and each unit only has one turn per round. The Speed stat determines where they are on the turn order, so having a higher speed gives you the advantage of going first or the flexibility to delay your turn until you feel the moment is right to make your move.”
Spell Talisman – You will be allowed to have up to 3 spell talismans, but there are over 40 spells in development. As of right now, there is 29 which gives gamers a lot of room to strategize on what they will need and utilize. Either be defensive or offensive or mix it up as well as support spells. Keep in mind you and the enemy can only use one spell per round so think on that. Expect some cool down with spells as well.

As prior post stated you will be updated as time goes on but for now keep an eye on on Humble Bundle. Coming Soon.
Hades – Battle out of Hell
Defy the god of death as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld in this rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.
Rogue Like video games are quite fun in a frustrating way which is hilarious to me. Hades Battle Out of Hell shows the fun in rebelling against your parent and this time you will have to deal with the entire house. I find that funny because all you want to do is leave!
youtube
Right now there is an Early Access Offer for PC which goes for 20 bucks and that not that bad.
We got to work on Hades less than a month after our previous game, Pyre, launched on July 25, 2017. Each time we’ve completed a project, we’ve found ourselves eager to dive into something new. This time around, we wanted to make something that combined aspects of all the best ideas we’d picked up over the course of working on our three previous games: the immediacy and accessibility of Bastion, the rich atmosphere and combat depth of Transistor, and the big and colorful cast of characters and forward-moving story structure in Pyre.
Hades is also our first game adapted from an existing mythology — the world of Greek myth. We felt we had a unique perspective on this theme, and saw the adaptation process as a new and exciting creative opportunity to explore. Our take on Greek mythology assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. Yet, those familiar with Greek myth should find our take on it to be true to the spirit of the source material, from Homer to Hesiod. Greek myth comes from stories of ancient gods and heroes filtered through new points of view; we’re excited to share ours.
Epic Games website can provide you with Early Access and you can check that out here.
Crackdown 3
It was a smart move on Microsoft to have Terry Crews as the front runner for an explosive action packed game! I still remember the first time trying out crackdown on because we got an opportunity to play a new Halo title. Too our surprise Crackdown was actually good. They kind of dropped the ball on the sequel but I still had my fun. Here is to hoping with Crackdown 3.

We look forward to sharing more on “Crackdown 3″ this Sunday during the Xbox E3 2018 briefing.” – via WindowsCentral

Set in a vast array of Disney and Pixar worlds, KINGDOM HEARTS follows the journey of Sora, a young boy and unknowing heir to a spectacular power. Tumblr media
Interbellum is a tabletop roleplaying game that allows players to take the roles of soldiers, adventurers, deserters or even spies in a world of conflict and the symbiosis of magic and technology. The setting takes inspiration from the aesthetics of the First World War and interwar period.
Tumblr media
The system is designed to capture a sense of close combat in trenches, ruins or even whole cities swept away by the total war. Be a small cog in the war machine, survive in military operations with tens of thousands of losses a day. Face the horrors of modern mechanized war, deadly, never-before-seen tanks, the airborne terror of biplanes, the experimental weapons of the future of warfare, forged in constant conflict.
However, this is not the world you know - It is a world of myth and magic, progressed to the diesel age. In other words, your squad can be composed of different fantasy races, where your sergeant can be a formerly enslaved orc or your comrade can be a cursed goblin marauder. In search of a means to break the stalemate of trench warfare, science returned magic from oblivion and tamed it. It changed everything.
Tumblr media
The last line of defense trying to stop the dreadful technomagically driven flying fortress.
The game locations are not limited to trenches on the frontline, this setting allows many types of adventures: be deserters and treasure hunters in the colonies, fight in city ruins or the shadow of tanks the size of a mountain, wage “rat war” in sewage networks and subways, or even be the hero of your assault squad in a suicide mission to destroy enemy secret weapons. Your fate is yours to decide: try to survive in war zones, on the frontline or behind enemy lines.
Tumblr media
Interbellum uses a proprietary d6 based system, clearly separating the narrative and combat component of the game and encourages teamwork between sqaudmates.
Character creation resembles that of the classic computer-based RPG’s of the late 90's. The choice of main attributes (Agility, Charisma, Intelligence, Perception, Strength, Vitality) and traits - is all familiar. But the choice of race and faction affects a lot - it determines the attitude of NPCs of other factions and races towards you, and can also give bonuses or penalties. The world is still struggling against slavery, for freedom and equality, therefore the influence of xenophobia and prejudice plays a big role in team building and gameplay.
Tumblr media
Early sketches of Army Boy mascot in different roles to illustrate attributes.
Another important aspect in creating a character is the choice of his class, his profession. The range of choice is quite broad: Officer, Rifleman, Medic, Mage, Technician, Wild Card and others. Each class gives unique perks and the ability to develop class skills. During character creation you can distribute the starting skill points as you like, but during the game it will be limited only to class skills and only they can be developed to the maximum. Of course, there are also will be workarounds for developing skills and changing your class that depend on the narrative and your game master. Also, your selected class gives you a starting free kit of equipment. Depending on the circumstances, you can purchase additional equipment for bonus points. Levelcap limits the development of the character, so you should consider what the character will specialize in.
Tumblr media
Having created the character and built your own squad with your friends, you will now choose one of the pre-prepared missions or one created by your game master. Since the game takes place in an era of rapid technological advance the time period of the mission significantly affects the complexity, the opponents encountered, and the available equipment. Do not forget - this is the era of the arms race, when every year the war brought new items to the arsenal. If you choose Great War - you can start with bolt action rifles in your hands, and finish commanding airborne tanks on airships. In your hands lies the choice of the battlefield: you can participate in another insane attempt to capture an enemy underground fort like Verdun, or try an adventure in the style of Lawrence of Arabia.
Each scenario has a map with the main locations. Moving between them, your squad will run into random encounters - some of them will be harmless, others carry danger or even an opponent. The use of technology provides you with a sense of security and fullness, but this is a very controversial pleasure. On the front line this technology is the hope of your detachment, but the first tanks are capricious, unreliable and very slow. Nevertheless, if your mission and the theater of operations allow, you can take a breezy ride on an armored car, which will support you. Combat uses typical turn-based game mechanics that are a bit similar to skirmish wargames.
Killing enemies and completing missions gives you experience points that allow your character to move to the next level. Each time the player gains a level, he receives several skill points to develop his class skills, and every three levels you can choose a perk. Perks provide an opportunity to further sharpen your character for a certain role in your squad or even acquire magical abilities.
Tumblr media
Andre Lagran - famed Death Brigade veteran, fighting for the Alliance faction. He was one of the last defenders of the Border Line.
Specifically, each action and every step in your character’s progress will be very important, the d6 was chosen because of our desire to follow the number 6 in the numerical parameters of attributes, skills, and so on.
An important nuance that brings an element of uncertainty into a conventional war is magic and its manifestations. At a camp deep in the rear lines near the forest, you can battle a gang of vampires, unconquered, and ghosts near the mass graves in place of the old battleground - all this is just the beginning. The select few who own the Gift can use the Words of Power, that is, spells. They are dangerous opponents, but their spells depend entirely on their intelligence and the benevolence of the Higher Powers. Much worse is meeting one of the Touched - a poor fellow who has touched by breath of chthonic chaos from outside of this world. These magicians are literally bursting from the eldritch energy boiling inside them, their bodies can mutate, and they themselves do not use spells, they directly try to control the flows of magical energy with random side effects. Where technology falls, magic creates incredible things.
Tumblr media
Interbellum is a fantasy dieselpunk setting. or rather technomagic. What if the usual fantasy world met the era of the first mechanized wars? A world where magic was forgotten for hundreds of years, rediscovered and used to break the positional stalemate, this led to an arms race that spawned 1000-ton steel beasts on land and in the air, make fortresses airborne or devastate whole cities with a few bombs. A world that replaced typical Evil Lords with dictators, knights with armored vehicles, and guilds with corporations. In this world fears of a trench war can materialize, your neighbors can be werewolf infiltrators, and the ghosts of your fallen comrades in no-man's land terrorize the enemy.
Tumblr media
Istalian Bastion-class landship. 100 tons of perfect engineering.
Unlike other similar settings, here dieselpunk is dominant, but the fantasy elements serve to deconstruct stereotypes. Of course, magic can be used to create fireballs, teleport and other cool stuff, but the main difference is that magic is used for creating new technologies and machines. In fact, magic used as justification for the typical attributes of a dieselpunk - weird tech, giant vehicles, mutants, etc.
Tumblr media
On Jule 7, in the year 1404, the Great War began. Beginning for trivial reasons as a conflict between the two superpowers and their satellites, in 9 years of hellish warfare it grew into a global slaughter between four geopolitical blocs. Hundreds of millions of people were involved, many of them died.
While the three superpowers were competing in the race for technical advancement, the fourth superpower collected magical knowledge bit by bit and united them with its own. From the very beginning of the war, the Sidhean Empire was able to surprise everyone by putting hundreds of combat mages on the battlefield. What was considered lost forever, had returned.
After centuries of oblivion, magic and many other fragments of the Old World rose again. Technology tamed the magic and this created a new leap in scientific and technological development, making the previously impossible now possible.
The playable period in setting will cover almost 30 years, including the Great War for lovers of epic conflict, and local wars in the post-war period. Your character can begin his story as cannon fodder in a world war, and after it become a revolutionary or a mercenary, if he survives on the battlefield.
Tumblr media
Factions:
Coalition - a bloc created by one of the oldest and largest human states in the Interbellum world, called the Ecumenical Empire. The imperial interests lie in the domination of Hearthland and creating more satellites. The most industrially advanced faction of the setting, at the expense of the environment, resulting in decaying forests around their smoke-filled megacities. The rigid rule of law and severe punishments are combined with imperial chauvinism, which is a blight on the Empire’s diplomacy, but creates protectionism for their inner policy and trade. The Empire is dominated by materialism and atheism because of the old doctrine that "all gods are evil, and their priests are tyrants”. After the Great War, the Empire was mired in the civil war and disintegrated into several states during the revolution, but the Coalition remained. The Galrian Republic preserved most of the heritage of the Empire, but brought more freedom at the cost of devastation, bureaucracy, the political demagogy and corruption.
Alliance - a union of conservative monarchical states clinging to domination in the central region of the world. A forced union of former rivals against a common enemy, compensates for its technological backwardness with a development balance between agriculture and industry. Having lost almost a quarter of its population in the Great War, in the post-war period it was almost split from within by crumbling empires and national liberation movements. Constant riots, insurrections and civil wars, mass poverty amid the luxury and wealth of untouchable despotic aristocrats all cast challenges on the young Alliance, which consists entirely of contradictions.
Northern League - a self-isolated and mystic bloc of races, nations and countries, united as satellites around the totalitarian elven state, the oldest known race. Forged by constant conflicts with mankind and remembrance of old grudges, northern elves spent more than a thousand years studying artifacts and restoring the knowledge of the Forerunner race, multiplying their magical skills while in the rest of the world technology supplanted the magic. This is the most fantastical and magic-heavy faction of the setting, almost exclusively having full access to fancy magic stuff. Their lag in industrial strength is balanced out by enchanted weapons and technomagic devices, for example, they can raise old fortresses in the air. Dragon-bombers? Check. Trolls with hand cannons? Check. Troopers with magic rayguns? Check. Machines made of living metal, fueled by the dying person imprisoned in them? Oh, boy…
Albian Commonwealth - a bloc of formally independent satellites ruled by the Albian Empire. It is an island-based colonial power, ruling the seas and controlling a large portion of international trade, as well as the development and exploitation of Aborigines in the colonies. Slavery, class and racial segregation are also flourishing in the Commonwealth. However, if you were born a free person in the Commonwealth, then you have many ways to find your place in life. Once in the past, Albia was just a distant province of the Ecumenical Empire, splitting from it during the Dark Ages. Separatists formed a political system around the union of guilds, traders, mercenaries and pirates, which allowed them to capitalize on their advantageous geographical position and control the main oceanic trade routes. They also started a era of great geographical discoveries.

What boots will be worn at 2022 Africa Cup of Nations?
[caption id="attachment_1000654" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Mohammed Salah's boots at the AFCON[/caption]The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in January and will leave numerous Premier League clubs without key players at a crucial period of the season. The 2021 AFCON was initially due to be held during the summer, but will now take place from January 9 to February 6 in Cameroon.Liverpool and Arsenal are amongst the clubs that will be hit hardest, with each club losing several players to the tournament for around a month. We take a look at some of the players who will feature at AFCON and the football boots they will be wearing during the tournament.Mohamed Salah Liverpool - adidas X SpeedflowThe Liverpool forward has been the standout performer in the Premier League this season and will be a key part of Egypts bid to win the AFCON.His adidas X Speedflow boots have helped him fire the Reds into title contention and he will be hoping to continue in the same vein on the international stage. He currently wears the laced version of the boot, which features a pliable upper with the trademark X-layskin construction.adidas have created a special limited edition Speedflow.1 for Salah, called Prepare For Battle, including Mos own logo and a special red, white and gold upper.Sadio Mane Liverpool New Balance FuronAlso getting his own signature pair for the AFCON, Manes New Balances Furon v6 boasts a new adaptive lightweight stretch upper called Fit Weave a feature that helped Mane maintain his stellar form.Named the Lion Roars, Manes boots have Impulse Orange and Blue tones, they are designed to inspired the next generation of the Senegalese young lions.Man will debut the boots on-pitch when Senegal takes on Zimbabwe in Cameroon.[caption id="attachment_1000655" align="alignnone" width="1024"] New Balance is Mane's favourite[/caption]The 2019 African Player of the Year winner will be the main man for his country in their attempt to win the AFCON for the first time.Thomas Partey Arsenal - adidas X SpeedflowArsenal will be impacted most by the tournament, with Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Elneny and Nicolas Pepe all set to take part.Parteys absence will hit the Gunners hard, as the midfielder has recently been showing just why they pushed to sign him from Atletico Madrid. The Ghana midfielder will be pivotal to his countrys hopes in Cameroon as they strive to win the tournament for the first time in 40 years.Ghana were knocked out in the round of 16 in 2019, but had finished in the top four in each of the previous six editions of the AFCON.Hakim Ziyech Chelsea - Nike Mercurial VaporZiyech has emerged as a key performer at Chelsea, with his Nike Mercurial Vapor boots regularly seen dancing around opposition penalty boxes. His absence would undoubtedly be felt by the Blues, as they are due to face Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur during the AFCON.However, Ziyech has been left out of recent international squads after a fall-out with Moroccan national team manager Vahid Halilhodzic. It would be a surprise if the 28-year-old isnt selected given that Morocco have not lifted the AFCON trophy since 1976.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Arsenal - Nike HypervenomAubameyang will be hoping to get more time wearing his boots for country than he has for club recently, likely to opt for his Nike Hypervenom boots, Auba is often seen changing the boots he wears, so expect anything on his feet for the tournament. He will be desperate to rediscover his form as Gabon bid to improve on their record of just two quarter-final appearances in Africas showpiece tournament.[caption id="attachment_1000656" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Mahrez will wear these boots for the AFCON[/caption]Riyad Mahrez Manchester City - Nike Mercurial SuperflyAlgeria, led by talented Man City winger Riyad Mahrez, will be the team to beat in Cameroon as they attempt to retain the AFCON title.Mahrez is the main attraction in a squad composed of top-class players who currently ply their trade in some of the biggest leagues in the world. However, it is worth noting that no favourites have lifted the trophy since Egypt became the first country to win the competition three times in a row in 2010.If Algeria are to buck that trend, Mahrezs striking Nike Mercurial Superfly boots will need to be at the forefront of their efforts. source: https://ghanasoccernet.com/

A Basic Guide to Nathan Chen
With all the new fans joining our ever increasing band of Nathan Chen stans, as well as with the Olympics coming up in a few days, I figured I’d make a masterpost of all the essential things to know about him. Please note, I have only been watching Nathan skate since 2016 so I am by no means an expert but I have been a big fan during that time so I know quite a bit.
So whether you are someone who just wants to know more about Nathan for the Olympics, or you are a budding Nathan fan, this post is for you.
Click the read more to see the entire post.
First, a brief history of Nathan and his career. Nathan was born May 5th, 1999 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents are immigrants from China. He started skating in 2002 after the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City. Along with figure skating, Nathan also trained in ballet and gymnastics and competed in those events up to the state level. In 2011, Nathan moved to California to train, and by late 2011 he switched to his current coach, Rafael Arutunian.
As for competition highlights, on the national level, Nathan is the 2010 US Novice Champion (youngest ever at that level) and the 2012 and 2014 US Junior Champion. His first senior US Nationals was in 2015, and he placed 8th due to a heel injury. In 2016, Nathan placed 3rd but he injured his hip during the exhibition skate and was out for the rest of the season. Sometimes the announcers still reference this during US Nationals. Nathan secured his first senior US champion title in 2017 and repeated that title in 2018.
On the international level, Nathan started in the Junior Grand Prix series in 2012 and he placed first in his first event but had to pull out of his second event due to injury. In 2013, he won gold at both of his qualifying events and went on to place 3rd in the Junior Grand Prix Final. That same season he placed 3rd at Junior Worlds. In 2015, Nathan went to Junior Worlds again but this time placed 4th. In the 2015 Junior Grand Prix series, he won gold at both of his qualifying events as well as the JGPF. However, he missed out on Junior Worlds that year because of his injury at US Nationals. In the 2016-2017 season, Nathan moved up to the senior level internationally. In the Grand Prix series, he placed 4th and 2nd respectively and qualified for the GPF. He won silver at the GPF and became the second youngest male skater to win a GPF medal after Evgeni Plushenko. That season, Nathan also won gold at Four Continents ahead of current Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, but at Worlds he placed 6th due to nerves and boot issues.
As for this season, Nathan has won both of his GP Qualifying events as well as the Grand Prix Final and US Nationals. The Olympics is his next event and he will finish off the main season with Worlds in March.
Some of Nathan’s important accomplishments:
- He is the first skater to ever land 5 types of quads in competition The 4T, 4S, 4F, 4Lz, and 4Lo (4A has never been accomplished yet).
- He is a member of the 100 club (A fan term for those who have achieved a score over 100 in the short program…currently only at 7 members). Also he is one of only 6 skaters to ever score above a 200 in the free skate and one of only 5 skaters to earn a composite score above 300.
- He is the first skater to land 5 quad jumps in a free program as well as the first skater to land 7 quad jumps in a single competition
- He is also the youngest US man to win a medal at the GPF, the youngest US man since 1966 to win US Senior Nationals, and the youngest US man to win a gold medal at the GPF.
It is also important to note Nathan’s support team and those around him.
- Nathan’s coach is Rafael Arutunian. Rafael is from Georgia (the country not the state) during the time of the Soviet Union. Rafael now lives in California where he trains his skaters. Nathan sometimes skates to songs by Russian composers, and it is believed to have a lot to do with Rafael.
- Rafael can often be seen yelling/clapping/generally being excited on the edge of rinks during his skaters’ performances. He also sometimes gets more excited than his skaters do when they do well.
- Nathan also trains alongside fellow American skaters Adam Rippon (also on the US men’s Olympic team), Ashley Wagner, and Mariah Bell.
- Nathan is the youngest of 5 kids and his family always seems to be super supportive of him. One of his sisters works in Silicon Valley.
Other important things to know about Nathan and the figure skating fans:
- Nathan sometimes gets ripped on for being too technical of a skater, meaning too many jumps and not enough artistry. It is starting to happen less and less because his artistry has been improving as he matures but you will still see this happen on occasion.
- Nathan struggles with his triple axel more than any other jump. It is sometimes referred to as his Achilles heel.
- Nathan is a part of the sQUAD, which is a fan made group of Shoma Uno, Boyang Jin, and Nathan Chen. This group is made of younger skaters that can do insane jumps, hence the “QUAD” part of the name. This term is thrown around on occasion with figure skating fans.
- You may also hear of Nathan being called “King Quad.” This is a reference to a series of ads for United Airlines where Nathan was given a superhero persona called King Quad.
- Nathan has also done ads for Kelloggs, Bridgestone Tires, and Coca-Cola. He was featured on Kelloggs cornflake boxes for the 2018 Olympics. He also had an ad for the Winter Olympics during the Super Bowl.
- Nathan is a fan of the Utah Jazz basketball team and you will often find him tweeting about them.
Now here comes the fun part, the videos of old programs. There are a few programs that are essential to knowing Nathan. Most of them are going to be newer programs since they are more relevant but there are a few older ones.
First off this year’s programs. If you are just here for the Olympics then at least watch these. I picked the most recent performances (US Nationals 2018) because they have the official costumes and they are the closest to what you will see at the Olympics.

Desperados III is a real-time tactics stealth video game. The game features five playable characters, with each having access to unique weapons and abilities. Players can play the game as a stealth game, in which they can assassinate enemies silently or disguise kills as accidental deaths. It is possible for players to complete missions without killing anyone by knocking out and tying up enemies. Bodies of incapacitated enemies need to be hidden or else other enemies patrolling the area will discover them and trigger an alarm that calls for reinforcement.(3) The cones of vision of all enemies are displayed, allowing players to navigate the map without alerting them.(4)

Story(edit)
The story is a prequel to Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, the first game in the series, and explores the origin of the series' protagonist John Cooper.(6) The game is set in the Wild West in the 1870s and features various locations including Colorado, Louisiana and Mexico. In addition to John Cooper, the game also includes Hector Mendoza, Doc McCoy, Isabelle Moreau, and Kate O'Hara as playable characters.
The story follows bounty hunter John Cooper as he pursues Frank, a notorious bandit leader responsible for killing John's father, James Cooper. Along the way, Cooper meets Doctor McCoy, who was hired by the DeVitt Company, a wealthy corporation, to defend the train Cooper was taking on his way to the town of Flagstone. Once in Flagstone, Cooper learns from his friend Hector Mendoza that Frank is at the mansion of the soon-to-be-married local mayor. In the meantime, the mayor's prospective bride, Kate O'Hara, finds out that her betrothed has sold her family's ranch to DeVitt. In the escalating altercation, O'Hara shoots the mayor as John Cooper walks in, seeking Frank. The newly met pair promptly escape the mansion and head for the O'Hara ranch to defend it from the attacking DeVitt company men. The defense is successful, but Kate's uncle Ian perishes in the battle.
The group eventually gets captured on their way to New Orleans, where Frank, who is working for DeVitt, is located. A Voodoo practitioner called Isabelle Moreau rescues them. Together, they set out to find her partner, Marshall Wayne, who disappeared while investigating DeVitt. Frank's gang have imprisoned many people out in the Louisiana wetlands, to be shipped off to work in DeVitt's mines. Once they rescue Wayne, the group sets fire to the old riverboat that functions as a headquarters for Frank's people. This act puts Frank on alert, and he locks down the city. Having sneaked past the roadblocks and guards, Cooper asserts that he wants to face Frank alone, to which Kate and Hector object. At Hector's mention of James Cooper's fate, John snaps and shoots Hector in the arm. Alone, he proceeds onto a docked freight ship, where he and Frank duel. Cooper is outdrawn and wounded.
The entire group gets captured again and sent to DeVitt's mines as slaves. Install mysql server on mac. They eventually escape after a week, but McCoy cuts his losses and abandons them. The others undertake Wayne's commission to abduct DeVitt himself from a lavish party at this mansion. They manage to spirit DeVitt out, but at the last moment their captive outwits them and hold them at gunpoint, only to be disabled by the returning McCoy. With the group back together, they hunt down Frank at the Devil's Canyon, where James Cooper and a young John pursued Frank years ago. Frank and John have another stand-off, watched over by Frank's lieutenants. The rest of the group overpowers Frank's posse, while John outdraws and finishes off Frank.
Development(edit)

The game was developed by German studio Mimimi Games, the developer of Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, whose gameplay mechanics were similar to this game. THQ Nordic, which acquired the rights to the franchise from Atari in 2013, served as the game's publisher.(7) Since the last game in the series was released more than a decade ago, the team made Desperados III a prequel story so that it can be accessible to new players who are new to the franchise or new to the genre. To achieve this, the team ensured that the game features an adequate tutorial system that teaches the player the gameplay foundation, and implemented gamepad controls for players who use a controller to play.(8)(6) The game's showdown mode, which allows players to pause time completely, was created after receiving players' feedback about the limitations of Shadow Tactics's 'shadow mode'. Unlike Shadow Tactics, the game features a more playful tone, with characters bantering with each other more frequently.(9)
The game was officially announced by THQ Nordic in August 2018.(10) Initially set to be released in 2019, the game was released on 16 June 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.(11)

Updates and Expansions(edit)
Since July 2020, Mimimi and THQ Nordic started supplying free updates for the game, which include additional mission scenarios. The first updates entail a loose frame story, titled The Baron's Challenge, in which the main characters get hired by an enigmatic figure, who is simply known as the Baron, to undertake certain missions for the entertainment of his patrons. Each mission can be unlocked with the successful completion of one or several levels in the main game. While the settings are basically the same as in the main story, each of the 14 new missions includes a different objective, sometimes with the characters having their in-play options restricted. In one example the player is required to eliminate certain enemies using environmental kills only, meaning that their other weapons are locked down for the scenario's duration.(12)(13)
Between September and November 2020, Mimimi and THQ Nordic also began publishing a purchasable three-part DLC story expansion, titled 'Money for the Vultures'. The plot is set three months after the events in the main game; Rosie, an NPC previously met in Baton Rouge (Mission 7), hires Cooper's group to hunt for the hidden wealth of Vincent DeVitt.(14)(15)
In December 2020, two new updates were provided: The 'Veteran Bounty Hunter Mode', which allows the player to optionally add the other protagonists to a level where any of them were originally not available (this option does not exist for the Baron's Challenges), and the 'Level Editor Light', a cheat which allows (in the PC version only) the complete rearrangement of a mission map's characters and items.(16)(17)
