Kageyuki (VA: Shinichiro Miki), the Lord of Unato Fortress, who became a kabaneri 5 years ago while defending Unato from a wave of kabane.

(I have questions. What has he been doing for the last 5 years? Does he even know what a kabaneri is? It looks like he’s going to be an antagonist since he appears to shoot Ikoma in this PV (though his weapon doesn’t seem capable of penetrating the heart cage in one shot). But what is his motivation? Does he still seek to protect Unato even though it now seems to be a nest for kabane? Is he acting alone (aside from the kabane who I assume follow his orders)? and if so then how has he been obtaining human blood to stop himself from turning?  Is he going to work with our protagonists in the end or simply be defeated by them?).

UNATO FORTRESS ITSELF = FINAL BOSS?

Yeah, I don’t know. I’m not even sure what it is. I’ve got a lot of questions.

Unato is obviously a kabane nest, with the blue heart thing clearly visible behind Kageyuki in both PVs. These nests can transform into fused colonies (or at least they are able to according to game info), but this doesn’t quite look like a regular fused colony (I know they take different shapes, this still seems like something else).

One tentative theory I have at the moment is that the huge cannon seen in PV 1 is involved in triggering this thing. Firing at Unato Fortress might prompt it to transform. The blue heart inside Unato is most likely the blue glowing part on top of this thing.

But why does it have a red heart cage?

I noticed that one of the tracks on the OST is called ‘NewUncontrollableEnemy’, which already said to me that we’re going to see a Nue in this movie. Is that this creature? According to the series, only a female kabaneri could form a Nue. I’m not sure that’s actually true. There may be conditions under which a male Nue can be formed that Soue didn’t know about. Perhaps the reason why it looks so different is because there’s a male kabaneri in there? Either Kageyuki or Ikoma or if you want the crack theory then both of them at once

Ikoma’s disappearance is clearly a key part of this movie. PV2 seems to show Mumei in a daze inside Unato, with Ikoma no longer there. What if the reason he disappeared is because he’s been assimilated by Unato itself or somehow controlled by it? I am almost certain that we’re going to see Ikoma get saved by Mumei by the end of this movie (after acting overprotective towards her at the start).

There’s another track of note on the OST, ‘EastSoldierParty’. ESP.

I wonder if that’s a hint at a kabane telepathic hivemind? How does that relate to Kageyuki? Is he able to give the kabane inside Unato Fortress orders by utilising it, or is it less conscious than this (as in, are Kageyuki’s actions are also dictated by the Unato hivemind and he doesn’t have any choice?) Could another kabaneri entering Unato be at risk of also being assimilated by this hivemind? (Ikoma seems almost feral at one point in PV2; and I wonder whether the risk of negative consequences inside Unato is higher when in that kind of state.)
