My friend's brand new baby girl, Vianney, who was born on Sept 1st, has been in the NICU since Thursday (Sept 14th) and has just been diagnosed with hemimegalencephaly. It's a rare, non-hereditary genetic mutation that caused a malformation of one side of her brain, causing seizures. She'll have to stay in the hospital for several more weeks while they try to get her seizures to slow down. She needs brain surgery but has to make it to 6 months before she can have it. Unless a miracle happens, she will need special care her whole life.

I work for the Little Sisters of the Poor and one of the sisters has suggested we start a novena asking for the intercession of the newly beatified Ulma Family, particularly asking for the special intercession of their unborn baby that was beatified with them, for a complete healing of Vianney.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could spread the word to everyone you know, asking them to help pray for a miracle for little Vianney and her family.

Parents are Jennifer & Shad, and Vianney has two older sisters, Cecilia & Zelie.

Prayer for the Intercession of the Ulma Family

Almighty and eternal God,

we thank You for the testimony of the heroic love of the spouses Józef and Wiktoria with their children, who gave their lives to save persecuted Jews.

May their prayers and example support families in Christian life and help everyone to follow the true path of holiness.

Lord, if it is in accordance with Your will, kindly grant the grace for the complete healing of little Vianney, for which we are asking You through their intercession and count them among the Blessed.

Reasons to pray Saint Therese of Liseaux’s novena

Today September 22nd St. Thérèse starts (as October 1st is her feast day) and I decided to share a bit about the devotion to this Saint. Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was a French carmelite nun who is known for her beautiful writings and her simple and practical approach to spiritual life which she called “the little way”. She came from a Saint family and joined the carmelite at age 15, she died at a young age but had a profound impact in the world through her writings that preaches about a spirituality based on trust in God and a desire to do small things with great love

Her intercession is asked for making important decisions (like discernment in vocation, engagement and religious vocation, which college to attend…), for healing (yours or of a loved one), to find a holy spouse, help with finding employment/new job / career, an increase in virtue(humility like her little way, chastity, piety, courage, grace to follows God’s will), conversion of loved ones , and for urgent or seemingly impossible requests.

Roses are often asked for as a sign of her intercession since she said, "When I die I will send down a shower of roses from the heavens." I have heard from so many of my friends who are devout to her of answered prayers that have come through the sign of receiving a rose

Even Pope Francis has prayed the Novena Rose Prayer, he said, "When I don't know how things are going to go, I have a custom of asking St Therese of the Child Jesus to take the problem into her hands and that she send me a rose."

Her novena is a shorter one with a starter prayer and 24 glories in homage to the 24 years she spent on earth and each day after finishing praying one “Hail Mary” and one “Our Father”.

On the first day we pray for the sanctification of Clergy. In the second for the missionaries worldwide and their necessities either spiritual or material and on the third for the Christians that are persecuted and martyrs. The intention for the fourth day is for the union and sanctification of families. In the 5th we pray for the depressed, for the oppressed and for those that lack direction in their lives while on the 6th we pray for the youth. In the 7th for the sick and so we can have a heart full of God’s love, the 8th we pray for prisoners and those incarcerated inside themselves by sin and on the last day we pray for the nonbelievers.

(was preparing some novenas and found one I wrote for Good Shepherd Sunday, but I think it is a lovely little prayer for more than just that feast and wanted to share. Not the most 'Lenten' prayer, but even Lent needs a little light. Includes an optional personalized prayer request section at the end!)

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Sweet Jesus of Nazareth, the world’s most gentle Shepherd, beloved Son of God, and Pascal Lamb, Your cloak is red as blood and white as light and Your staff is worn and warm, held by pierced palms as You hold open the pasture gate. The sight of my Shepherd fills my broken heart with such joy, and I rejoice in knowing I have been gifted a pasture beside You, Shepherd most patient, most kind, most loving.  Heavenly Savior and Shepherd of the world, create a clean heart within me; make my coat white as snow. I’ve been having a tough time getting into the Christmas spirit this year. I think I prefer focusing on being consistent with my novenas to La Santa Muerte and prioritize rest and creativity during these cold months ahead.

Charity is one of the fundamental virtues of the Catholic religion. The moral doctrine preached by Christ is comprised in the words: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments depends the whole law and the prophets" (St. Matthew 22:37-40).

As in everything else, the Holy Helpers are our models also in charity. Charity consists in wishing well for our fellow men, rejoicing with the glad and sympathizing with the sad. It includes also doing good to all, being friendly, lenient, meek, and helpful toward them. We are loving our neighbor when we assist the poor and distressed, when we harbor no envy for those better off than ourselves, when we esteem the just for their virtue, and hate not the sinner but their sin.

We love our neighbor by not just having these sentiments in our heart, but by showing them in our actions.

The Anvil Novena

(The Sigil Of TARTAROUKHOS)

There is folklore that says if an anvil were to fall into the pit, it would take nine (9) days before it reached the bottom of Tartarus. Naturally, I wanted to adapt that into a Novena working.

Novenas, for anyone unfamiliar, are nine (9) day prayers said to achieve some goal or effect. Typically, they are said in-tandem with candles lit to Saints, Angels, Mary, or the Trinity. However, there are also plenty made for specific "conditions" (love, luck, money, cursing, you name it!), as well as for non-Christian spirits, notably African and Latine spirits. They have even broken into neopagan spaces, with people creating devotional Novena Candles for their deities.

I grew up with novenas, being raised Catholic with a Mexican parent, and I still incorporate them, as I feel they are honestly a wonderful way to work with spirits. When I read about this bit of folklore, I decided to approach Hekate about it.

She gave me the following working:

Prepare a black candle made to last 9 days. Place it into [a bowl of] spring water, and cense it with chthonic herbs of your choice [(myrrh when in doubt)]. A petition may be placed in the water, written on the candle, or in any other way that you like. You must place under the bowl the sigil of TARTAROUKHOS (see above) With this sigil, it is best if it is made in some sacred fashion, and blessed by the witch. Once ready, place the bowl in an appropriate place and pray: TARTAROUKHOS TARTAROUKHOS TARTAROUKHOS O Anvil of Heaven Where ARES’ sword is forged O Anvil of Heaven Who’s steel smashes bone O Anvil of Heaven HEPHAESTUS’ sacred friend Fall, fall, fall for me Far, far, far for me Into the black pit you bear my prayer Crushing all who stand in your way Into the black pit fall O Anvil of Heaven Fall for me, fall for Hekate [Petition] AMEN Pray [this] daily for 9 days and your petition will be granted.

There was some caution going into this: Namely, be careful what you wish for, and who you are wishing to. These spirits aren't necessarily kindly or friendly to people. Being more primordial as well, they aren't very delicate in their approach. Caution is advised with this working, given its power and potential effects.

When I was waiting in the pew for confession on Saturday, this was in it in front of me. No one claimed it, so I read part of it and brought it home. I’m going to start this one this Friday. If I do, the Novena will end on the Epiphany!

A Novena Prayer to Saint Joseph to Prepare for His Feast Day

Opening: 

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Intercession Prayer: Saint Joseph, beloved of Mary, most loving parent of Jesus, our Savior, you are the faithful protector of all Christians. You open your cloak to us, and warm us in its brown, scratchy wool, just as you did for your son, Jesus, for so many centuries. You dote on us as a father should, and you press a kiss to the crown of the head of each child who comes before you, a perfect mirror of your love for the Savior of all humanity. I have full confidence in your love for me and support of my needs, for when Mary took you as her husband and God chose you as His foster father, you took the whole world on as your beloved children. 

Goodly Saint Joseph, foster father of God, pray for me that I may have a humble, charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will of the Most Holy Trinity. Be my model for a good life, that I may die in peace as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. As your feast approaches, I pray for the souls of those I have lost. Watch over those who found themselves hurting, alone, or scared when their time came, and guide me to my own happy death when my Savior comes to fetch me. Joseph, I bask in your loving warm and kindly implore your powerful prayers for the blessing of a happy death to be brought to the world.

Guardian of the Light of the World, I thank you for your prayers, your cloak, and the warmth of your kisses. Remember, Saint Joseph, most chase foster of my Beloved Jesus, that no one ever had recourse to your protection or asked for your aid without obtaining relief. Despise not my prayers, foster-father of the Redeemer, but graciously receive them.

Novena of Grace, Tues 4th – Wed 12th March 2025

The Novena of Grace takes place from 4 – 12 of March each year. St Francis Xavier was canonised on 12 March 1622.

In Our Lady Queen of Peace, each day of the novena, the prayer seeking the intercession of St Francis Xavier is recited at the end of Mass.

At the 12 noon Mass, a special homily is preached on an aspect of the life of St Francis Xavier, with practical lessons being drawn for ordinary life.

Novena Prayer to St Francis Xavier

O most kind and loving saint, in union with you I adore the Divine Majesty. The remembrance of the favours with which God blessed you during life, and of your glory after death, fills me with joy;

and I unite with you in offering to Him

my humble tribute of thanksgiving and of praise,

I implore of you to secure for me through your powerful intercession

the all-important blessing of living and dying in the state of grace.

I also beseech you to obtain the favour I ask in this Novena
