I’m currently working on a few different things, and I was wondering if anybody would be interested in some of these!

Coping skill flash cards: They will come with multiple different skills for different mental or physical crises, and will include an image that’s related to the skill!

Communication cards: These will be mainly basic ones, such as explaining that you use an AAC, or other things like that! I am also willing to make custom ones if you need specifics. These unfortunately won’t have pictures, but they will be easy to print and cut out!

Prewritten explanations: These are paragraphs and things that you can easily copy and paste into your AAC or emails, that will explain specific things! The ones I’m currently thinking about include an explanation on AAC, an explanation on autism, explaining tics, explaining a difficulty in speaking, and explaining that you need more patience! I’m also willing to do customs for this as well!

Also!!! All of these resources will be 100% free. Absolutely no payment will be needed, as I know how hard it is to find things like this that are suited to your needs. Hey Chooms, um I have some news!

I have ptsd, and yes you are right. It is a 24/7, 365 kinda thing. I got it 5 years ago, went through therapy and i still have moments. One moment i am talking with some co workers, someone touches me to get my attention, and voila, panic ensues. I have plenty of easy days as well, but i have trouble with sleeping, wich results in being tired during the day. Tiredness increases the risk of getting an sensory overload, wich can cause me to either blow up or shut down. Something that never happend before i got ptsd.

Has anyone noticed that (especially in the crime/action/sci-fi genre) PTSD is sometimes used as a quick and easy way to make characters seem more sympathetic? The Ruggedly Handsome Traumatized Hero has an uwu bad dream, oh no! Poor baby. Okay, let’s move on to the real story and it will never come up again.

Like, I’ve never had PTSD, but it seems like it would be a 24/7, 365 kind of situation, you know? It sucks cause it can get in the way of things you need or like to do, and it can cut you off from the people you love. The only symptoms aren’t panic attacks and nightmares, there’s stuff like depression and insomnia and hypervigilance and outbursts of anger. PTSD is actually something that fucks with you life. It’s ugly and painful. It’s not something you can whip out for a 30 second flashback scene to show your audience “Look at this hero, he’s so badass he was actually traumatized by his experiences! Enjoy this brief angst interlude before we return to the main plot.” I don’t think it works that way.

And even if you do show your character dealing with this, most of the time they’re the isolate-yourself-and-drink-to-keep-the-demons-at-bay type (because seeking help for mental health issues is unmasculine, apparently). But those coping methods shouldn’t be romanticised either. What happened to people dealing with their issues in a healthy way? Why can’t we show the Ruggedly Handsome Traumatized Hero reaching out to his friends for help and going to therapy?

I guess because of the popularity of plot-driven stories. I think directors and writers think their audiences don’t care about the “in-between” moments. I don’t think they care about “what would happen if my character had PTSD? How would it affect their lives? How would they deal? How would it change them as a person? How would it affect them as they’re trying to deal with the challenges of the main plot?”
