the protoverse strips had me laughing several times, especially knowing Ruby Spears protoman was likely confused when they asked about Bass, because Ruby Spears Bass has his name pronounced like the fish and not like the bass clef.
also someone please help Bass.exe, even if its an alternate of someone else, pretty sure he doesn't wanna be squashed either... you know what, one of the groups in the void needs to do something to keep the net navis safe, you know like a series of rules or something, because it's clear poor Protoman.exe and Bass.exe are going to get hurt if someone doesn't. (I don't think anyone wants them to die thank you.)
Tumblr media
Fun fact: Ruby Spears Mega Man released September 11, 1994. Mega Man 7, Bass' introduction, wasn't released in Japan until March 24, 1995. Even though Ruby Spears went until January 19, 1996, Bass himself never makes an appearance.
Tumblr media
Well, there is... ONE Bass... who will probably... take care of Bass.EXE... he's just... from a regrettable continuity.
No one needs to read Novas Aventuras de Megaman. No one.

A lot of what SEGA and Capcom do makes more sense if you tell yourself that they're just finding out about this stuff now.
Bad as Penders was, I highly doubt he was dumb enough to try and go the route as that infamous writer in Novas Aventuras de Megaman, who openly planned to have his OC kill the entire cast.
Given that he talked about wanting to kill off Antoine and Rotor, tried his damndest to kill off Sally and actually SUCCEEDED with Robotnik, and the fact he keeps sidelining game characters whenever he gets the chance… I’m not certain he really ISN’T that stupid. That he was able to latch on to a blank slate he could mold however he wished (Knuckles) was simply fortuitous happenstance.

Roll-chan vs the female Robot Masters, low-res pixel style! (3 images)
This is kind of a thought experiment or very loose idea for an all-female Mega Man/Rockman game. It occurred to me that there were barely enough woman Robot Masters in the Classic era franchise to make a full boss set of 8, and naturally Roll would be the one to take them on with her Roll Buster (as seen in Rockman 1 mobile and the Marvel vs Capcom games), her trusty broom (from Powered Up and Tatsunoko vs Capcom), and her ability to turn her arm into household appliances to be used as weapons (in the Ruby-Spears cartoon). The latter would be her version of the Copy Ability, with each boss giving her a themed appliance/weapon like a souped-up whirlpool blender or rocket stove. Pretty cool, eh?
Shoutouts to Capricorn’s two Rockmen R fangames that star Roll, as well as Zynk Oxhyde’s romhacks that replace Rock with her in all the 8-bit games! More details on the characters chosen below.
1: The stage select screen. Centaur Woman (who is implied to be female in Shigeto Ikehara’s Rockman 6 manga), Virgo (one of the Zodiac-based bosses from the Taiwanese PC game Rockman Strategy), Splash Woman (still the only female Robot Master from a mainline game…), Quake Woman (an original character from the Archie Mega Man comic), Roll (in her Mega Man 8 outfit), Vesper Woman (also from the Archie comic, based on an unused design for Mega Man 9), Hypno Woman (from the Fully Charged (FC) cartoon), Coin Woman (from the gambling game Pachislot Rockman Ability (PRA)), Blasto Woman (also from FC).
2. Supporting characters. Dr. Emilia Light (Thomas Light’s adult daughter and replacement in PRA), Suna Light (Thomas Light’s child daughter in FC), Trancy (the third playable character in PRA), Tango (replaces Rush in Zynk Oxhyde’s romhacks, so I included her here too as Roll’s animal partner), Kalinka Cossack (in her Rockman Xover outfit), Nástenka (Kalinka’s android bodyguard in the Brazilian comic Novas Aventuras de Megaman), Plum (from Battle & Chase), Chaotique (an anti-hero rival character from FC), Piano/W. Waltz (a hybrid design I pieced together from Hitoshi Ariga’s unused Piano concept for a female partner to Bass in the Megamix manga (and used as a recurring enemy in Capricorn’s fangames), and the W. Waltz concept from a Hideki Ishikawa illustration that had a cameo in Dreamwave’s comic), Madam Y (also from Ishikawa’s illustration and used as an antagonist in Archie’s comic). I imagine their roles in a potential game could be similar to, respectively, Dr. Light, Roll, Auto, Rush, Dr. Cossack, Duo, Eddy, Blues, Bass, and Dr. Wily. The robot ones could be unlockable playable characters too.
3. Extra costumes for Roll. As in Powered Up, Roll could get some unlockable outfits (I didn’t draw any of the extra skins from that game because there’s too many, but they could be included too). Classic Roll, Pachislot Rockman Ability Roll, Battle & Chase Roll, Hyper Roll from the Marvel vs Capcom games, Mega Girl from the Captain N cartoon, Roll’s battle armour from the anime OVA Upon a Star, the Ruby-Spears cartoon Roll, the Novas Aventuras comic Roll.

A Look At Stuff You Probably Never Heard Of: Novas Aventuras de Megaman
Okay, I knew about this for a long while, but only actually check it out recently and MAN! This comic is something else! And the stuff in it is absolutely bizarre. Today, we’re taking a look at... Novas Aventuras de Megaman!
(Under Read More for length and mild nudity/gore)
Tumblr media
Novas Aventuras de Megaman (New Adventures of Megaman) is a Brazilian comic book adaptation of Capcom’s Mega Man series. It was developed by  Estúdio PPA (PPA Studios, with PPA standing for “Peixoto Produções Artísticas” (Peixoto Artistic Productions)) and was published by Editora Magnum (Magnum Press) and ran from 1996 to 1998 with a total of 16 issues before being cancelled due to financial problems.
The first 5 issues were written by José Roberto Pereira with issues 7 through 16 being written by Orlando Tosetto Jr. And Sérgio Peixoto Silva (who owned Estudio PPA) was the editor-in-chief and the writer of Issue 6.
Tumblr media
Following the events of Mega Man 8 (the most recent Mega Man game at the time), Wily has been arrested. But because of Dr. Wily’s robots, all governments of the world placed a ban on outdated robots, including Rock and Roll. Dr. Light, not wanting to give away his children, secretly upgraded them before putting them in energy capsules and letting them sleep for 30 years while their systems continued upgrading. During that time, a Japanese company released a line of androids known as “Neo-Mavericks” that could think independently, were self-sufficient, and were more intelligent. However, Wily managed to create an army of Neo-Mavericks and took over the world, becoming emperor while Dr. Light eventually died from nuclear radiation.
30 years later, Roll manages to find her brother’s energy capsule and after waking him up and getting him up to speed, they decide to track down Wily and stop him. But not long after starting their journey, they run into Mega Man X, who was living at their old house. He initially didn’t want to fight, having lost everything in his previous attempts to oppose Wily, but following a rousing speech by Rock and because they’re family, Rock, Roll, and X team up to find out if anyone else from their time (namely Protoman and Bass) survived.
Tumblr media
One thing that’s very easy to notice is how the art style changes almost constantly. As you may have noticed, there’s no artist mentioned above. The reason being that the art is crowdsourced. Basically, the company would hold a contest and whomever won would get to draw the next issue. For those unaware, crowdsourcing is similar to crowdfunding, but instead of asking the public for money to complete a project, crowdsourcing is having the public complete a task for the company and the person in question may or may not get paid, as there’s no legal requirement for payment. Put simply, each issue has a different artist because a different person won a contest.
One other thing of note is that there are also original characters. In the image just above, Kalinka is talking with a girl known only as “Princess”.
Okay, let me get this out of the way; this series is not good at all. But I give it a “Try It” rating solely to see if there’s any entertainment to be had in seeing how bad it is.
And now, again, time for the Final Recommendation:
Never Let Go Of It||Get It||Hold Onto It||Try It||Consider It||Stay Away From It
The art is very inconsistent for reasons I stated above, but even then, they often range from just barely okay to poor to just plain awful. And the thing is, all the artists are either high schooler or attend college.
Another reason why this comic is rather infamous is... welll...
Tumblr media
The series is infamous for its use of gore, foul language, and nudity. The image above? That codpiece will remain Roll’s outfit from Issue 12 (where this image came from) all the way to Issue 16, the final issue. And let me tell you, Roll is very often in situations where she has little to no clothes, or she’s wearing something that shows off a lot of skin, as seen here (don’t worry, there’s no nudity, but some very unusual-looking pants). I would also like to remind everyone that this takes place 30 years in the future, thus making the characters adults. Although there are times where Mega Man resembles his old child self. I also chose not to go with the Issue 1 cover because Roll wasn’t wearing anything. And while nothing major was show, I still didn’t want to use it.
And this also leads me to another thing that this comic is known for.
Tumblr media
There is a lot of sexual tenson between X, Mega Man, and Roll. Basically, the two Mega Men have a thing for Roll and Roll has a thing for the two Mega Men. The guys are often enamored with her and they are very infatuated with each other. But at the same time, it makes it obvious that they’re still family; Roll often refers to Mega Man and X as her brothers, X and Mega Man refer to each other as brothers, and they refer to Roll as their sister. And the three seem to be fully aware of their shared interests too.
And another thing I want to talk about is Princess. Believe it or not, she’s actually an author insert, having been created by José Roberto Pereira and was introduced during the second half of Issue 2, where she appears on a talk show, where she plans on killing Rock and Roll and taking over as protagonist. She also goes on a tirade about American media in Brazil. Honestly, nothing I say does the scene justice, so you’ll just have to read it for yourself. And as for José, he intended to have Princess kill the characters and take over as protagonist, but after parting ways with the company, she was written out entirely in issue 7 (where the image of her and Kalinka comes from).
And finally, I want to mention that neither Sérgio or José have played a Mega Man game before. They confessed to this and said they got the information needed by a friend of their who did play the games.
All-in-all, like I said, the comics aren’t good, but it can be entertaining to see just how bad it is.

But Archie Mega Man doesn't have any hilarious bullshit to be aghast at; you'll need to add Novas Aventuras de Mega Man to the reading list if you want to keep tonal consistency on this blog. It even had its own insane writer trying to steal the comic for his OCs!
I’m allowed to talk about good comics too, you know

I’m pretty new to Megaman, so I haven’t gone through all of the canon media yet but I am enjoying your comics so… what’s NOVAS, what’s up with, and why is it bad?
Aaah, Novas Aventuras de Megaman....
Novas was a licensed Brazilian Mega Man comic book developed by Estúdio PPA and published by Editora Magnum in the 90s. It's well-known for being... bad. The kindest words I can use to describe Novas is "edgy" and "unprofessional."
I'm interpreting this quesion to be not just "what is Novas" but also "WHY is Novas" so I did a little bit of research to get you a full answer, and not just my horrified reaction to it.
The book was published not long after the Ruby Spears cartoon. Apparently the book's early writer and editor, José Roberto Pereira and Sérgio Peixoto had been in touch with Character Toy Trade, who licensed Capcom products to Brazil. Upon hearing of the Ruby Spears release, Pereira and Peixoto pitched a comic to Editora Magnum.
Apparently, they wanted to do this so badly that, to convince Magnum's execs to enter a publishing deal, they offered to work... for free, earning nothing for the first ten or twelve issues.
While it's not unusual for a comic run to use multiple artists and contain varying art styles throughout, most of THIS title was drawn using unpaid labor from fans solicited through the magazigne it was published in, Animax, and it shows. Readers were prompted to submit their art tests to the publishers, and out of those the best of the lot was selected. To participate, the candidate had to send 6 pages of comics, 2 in pencil, two finished art and two colored. Contributing artists were compensated with a copy of the published issue to use in their portfolio. Quite literally working on spec for exposure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of it is, simply put, not the quality you expect from a publisher. Fair is fair, though, and I would be remiss not to aknowledge that some of these artists went on to be very well-respected comic artists, such as Daniel HDR (who did MM2 and 16, and has now worked for Marvel, DC, Dynamite Ent. and Image Comics, was the winner of DRAGON AWARDS 2020 - BEST GRAPHIC NOVEL for Battlestar Galactica: Counterstrike, and is the CEO of Dínamo Estúdio art School in Brazil) and Érica Awano (who got her start with MM4, and now known for her works related to the Tormenta universe and has recieved the Troféu HQ Mix).
The art... is the least of their issues, though. I've read plenty of webcomics where the art began, let's say, amaturish, but the story and writing more than made up for it. I can't say the same is true for Novas.
It's baffling that Pereira and Peixoto fought to have this book, given neither of them appeared to give a single shit about the source material. My understanding is manga and anime was very popular in Brazil at the time. I'd call it a cashgrab, but they weren't paid for most of it. Editor-in-chief Sérgio Peixoto admitted neither he nor Pereira had ever played a Mega Man game before and all they knew about the story was some information they got from someone who played the games. Further more, despite the first two issues including promotional art from Ruby Spears and official art from the games, including a large centerfold poster that remained for two additional issues, Pereira believed Ruby Spears was "very bad." He didn't think much of the games' plot either, what little he knew of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pereira's distaste for American media and adaptations is painfully obvious within the text of Novas, which takes the time to address the audiance to soapbox about imported media. This is, in part, done in a self-depricating sort of way, but seems to be the driving force behind the decision to even make Novas. Peixoto admits Character offered them "the original Megaman manga" (the Shigeto Ikehara "Rockman" manga, I believe) but he turned it down to do a Brazilian-made book. They wanted Megaman to be drawn by Brazilians and in the manga style - very fixated on being a "manga" rather than a "comic." Despite apparently knowing the product is low-quality, Peixoto appears to be proud to have "made 16 editions of the first manga magazine created entirely in Brazil, using a world-famous character."
I suppose that's the tipping point - "a world-famous character." No care for Megaman, no, but care that he's famous. Pereira apparently had every intention to have his own OCs take over the book after Megaman got readers in the door - apparently intending to kill off the megaman characters in graphic ways - but he left the project after #5, citing that he couldn't actually write his "own" story and... well, lack of payment. Peixoto wrote number 6, and Orlando Tosetto Jr. was brought on to do 7-16.
The desire to provide opportunities for local writers and artists is admirable... in theory... but... hardly anyone got paid and it's not exactly a book I would be proud to have my name on.
But enough about Novas' unpaid labor, quesionable motivations, and poor research. The writing is just... bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The plot is all over the place. There are so many dropped plot threads, tone shifts, continuity issues, and retcons in only 16 issues, it'll make your head spin. It reads like a 15-year-old boy made a megaman comic because he thought there should be more swearing and naked girls.
Tumblr media
The least of the writing's issues stem from the fact that they barely knew the plot, so character backstories, personalities, relationships, etc. are all over the place. Forte/Bass is named "Slasher" and he takes on a Protoman-type role as a Light bot and sibling, while Protoman is implied to be this mysterious mastermind-type character pulling strings behind the scene, Roll used to be human and is super special for some reason, Rock's an asshole, and X is a horny whiney pissbaby asshole...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's crude.
Tumblr media
It's bloody.
Tumblr media
It's horny.
Tumblr media
Sometimes downright disgusting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And one can't ignore the incest.
There are... MUCH more egregious panels, I'm trying to keep it tame. There's a LOT of pointless nudity, including a scene near the end where they're kidnapped and tied up but only the women are stripped naked... for no discernable reason, I can't even say it's because their kidnappers are being disgusting, because they're not, even X is behaving himself for once.
I'd love to say the incest was an accident, but it's not, they actively call each other brother and sister.
Occationally the comic veers into dark topics, but the ever shifting tone and oversexualization makes it hard to tell how I - the reader - am supposed to feel about it. While I'm busy being horrified, I can't help worrying someone's getting off on child abuse and murder.
Maybe this kind of misogynistic gross-out shock-value was funny at the time. I've seen a few people remark on this comic's run fondly, saying they liked it when it came out. I can't imagine ever thinking it was good.
If anyone would like to know more about Novas without subjecting themselves to reading it, Mechanical Maniacs does their best to summarize.
