WRITTEN BY: Tash (she/her), GMT+10
BACKGROUND / BIO
triggering / sensitive content warnings: infertility, bullying
Darkness. That’s all that Tamara saw when trying to recollect her earliest memories. Anything prior to her fourth birthday was a mystery, as if her life truly only began the moment she was welcomed into a new home, loved and cared for from that moment on. Mr and Mrs Hayes were a couple cursed with the inability to reproduce, leaving them with the options of surrogacy and adoption. They chose the latter, welcoming Tamara into their home. Adjusting to her new family was as easy as breathing. She couldn’t put a face to her mother or father, but now she could. And that alone made her over the moon. She had someone to teach her how to read and write, how to ride a bike and someone who would tuck her in bed at night. Sure, there were moments when Tamara lashed out in a child-sized rage over not being allowed a candy bar before dinner, and not wanting to have a bath, but overall the good outweighed the bad.
Life was great. Tamara had a loving family, food in her stomach, a roof over her head and passion in her heart. She was forever grateful, and over the years she became a genuinely kind human. Unfortunately, other students didn't take well to her adoption and Tamara was bullied about her biological parents giving her away. She didn't take well to this, and after little assistance from the school, well... someone ended up with a bloodied nose. It was safe to say that she was suspended from school for a week, but the fact that she offered the other student instant assistance helped her case. She wasn't a bad person, just in a bad situation. After this incident, and with some guidance from career counsellors, Tamara began focusing on working towards becoming a doctor. She wanted to do good in the world. She didn't want to be judge, jury, or executioner; just yearned to help others. Her parents couldn't have been prouder, even though their daughter was onto her next adventure.
Tamara moved to Merrock in 2015 after finishing her postgraduate degree in medicine at MSVU. Between countless hours working at the local hospital and trying to explore her new town, love wasn't something Tamara imagined she'd find. She'd quickly become fond of Cage Newman; a local carpenter, who had the most beautiful boy. She found herself not only head over heels for him, but the family that they had become. Tamara had everything she'd ever dreamed of. She had an amazing job, had formed lasting friendships and found who she believed was the love of her life. It all seemed like something straight out of a fairy tale.
Regardless of her perfect life, nothing could get rid of the aching feeling in her bones. She wanted to go through pregnancy and birth for herself. She had loved Colton like he was her own, but Tamara couldn’t stop herself from wanting that experience. The world seemed to crumble around them piece by piece, their picture perfect family tearing at the seams. They both seemed to want different things — so as quick as it had started, it was over. Cage had left town to explore the world with Colton, giving Tamara time to gather her things once their divorce had been finalised. Instead of moving through her feelings, she returned home to her parents and dove into her work. Determined to advance, and to help families and the littlest of patients, Tamara turned to paediatrics.
It had been years since she had returned to Maine. She missed the life that she had built, and the Merrockites that brought life to the town. There was unfinished business that needed to be resolved in order for her to move on with her life. After some back and forth communication, Tamara was welcomed back to Merrock Hospital, and purchased her first home in the suburbs.

'Where's the accountability?' Deadline looms for mass shooting inquiry recommendation
In the coming days, the federal and Nova Scotia governments will face the first deadline for action recommended by the inquiry that investigated the worst mass shooting in Canadian history.
The Mass Casualty Commission, which tabled its final report last month, has called on the two levels of government to deal with the "unmet need for mental health, grief and bereavement supports" in northern and central Nova Scotia, where 22 people were shot dead on April 18-19, 2020.
It remains unclear what, if anything, will happen when the deadline arrives on Monday, but one thing is certain: Serena Lewis will be watching.
The registered social worker was the province's grief and bereavement coordinator in northern Nova Scotia three years ago when a gunman disguised as a Mountie went on a 13-hour rampage through the largely rural area.
"I've dedicated my career to (dealing with) grief, but it's very difficult with something of this magnitude," Lewis said in a recent interview, recalling the countless hours she spent trying to help people devastated by the tragedy, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was taking hold.
"I was committing to people that they were going to get the help that was needed."
But that never happened. Even though she drafted a provincial grief strategy and submitted it to the Nova Scotia government in December 2020, the plan was shelved.
"As my term was coming to an end, I asked if we were going to mobilize the strategy, and I got no word on anything," said Lewis, who left the role in 2021. "I can't answer why things are not moving."
The commission of inquiry concluded that the government's inaction led to a prolonged "public health emergency" in the counties where the killings occurred -- Colchester, Cumberland and Hants.
"Many people continue to be affected by this incident," the commission's report says. "While most of them describe its impact as a decline in mental health and/or well-being, others say it has affected the way they live their lives."
Among other things, the commission found the province gave very little support to the most affected residents, and there were delays in providing what was available. For example, people were simply given a list of counsellors rather than help in connecting with one. And some residents had to recount their traumatic experiences repeatedly as they navigated the support system.
Darcy Dobson, the daughter of victim Heather O'Brien, told the inquiry she did not get the help she needed.
"There is definitely a mental-health resource problem in this country, and in this province," she said. "And something needs to be done about it. You never expect a mass casualty to happen, but it does. We're living proof that there was nobody who knew how to handle the mass of mental health issues that came with it."
The commission found that "governmental support has been inadequate, leading to a healing deficit and ... broken trust." The report goes on to say the long-term implications include "the potential to lead to further cycles of violence and trauma."
That's why the commission recommended that the federal and Nova Scotia governments start by funding a multidisciplinary team of health professionals who can provide urgent support, and then transition to a long-term strategy.
Lewis said the commission's proposal is exactly what she has been pushing for.
"That's what we've needed since Day 1," she said.
A spokesperson for Carolyn Bennett, the federal minister of mental health and addictions, issued a statement saying Ottawa is reviewing the recommendations and "will work closely with Nova Scotia and with the people and the communities affected."
The statement pointed to Ottawa's new Wellness Together Canada portal and the PocketWell app, which provides free, round-the-clock access to support.
"We know the pain, trauma, and heartbreaking loss will never truly go away, but we stand with you," the statement said. There is no reference to the commission's recommendations or the May 1 deadline.
As for the provincial government, the minister responsible for addictions and mental health, Brian Comer, declined a request for an interview. He issued a statement saying a team of deputy ministers is reviewing the recommendations.
"This includes meeting the May 1 deadline for the recommendation noted," Comer's statement said, offering no details. The province's justice minister offered a similar statement Tuesday.
Alec Stratford, executive director of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers, said the province has moved too slowly.
"This is work that should have started long ago," he said. "It takes time to build these systems ... And all of this is not going to come into play by May 1."
Stratford said it's important to recognize that the sense of grief many Nova Scotians are still feeling has been complicated by the traumatic nature of what happened and the social isolation caused by the pandemic.
"The ceremonies that we have in our society to bring closure never happened," he said. "Those communities suffered this egregious loss, (and) all of this trauma was followed by a lack of coherent care."
He fears the province's poor response could result in more cases of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts.
Lewis said that's why the commission's work is so important.
"If we don't mobilize those recommendations, then what good was it?" she asked. "Where is the accountability?"
This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 26, 2023.

Why Counselling Services Matter in Mental Health Recovery
Mental health is as crucial as physical health, yet it often does not receive the same attention or resources. Many people struggle silently with mental health issues, feeling isolated or unsure where to turn. Counselling Services, Counselling Services PEI or elsewhere, and similar services in various locations provide vital support that can guide individuals toward recovery and well-being. Whether it's face-to-face sessions or online therapy, these services play a significant role. In this article, we'll explore how counselling can make a profound difference in mental health recovery. Through understanding and supportive practices, counselling helps mend the mind and foster a path to recovery.
The Role of Counselling in Healing
Counselling offers a safe space where individuals can express their feelings and thoughts without judgment. It's about talking to a professional who understands and can offer new perspectives on personal challenges. Whether it's depression, anxiety, stress, or any other mental health issue, counselling can help individuals understand their emotions better and learn coping mechanisms. This kind of support is essential in helping people regain control over their lives. It not only assists in the alleviation of immediate distress but also equips individuals with long-term strategies to manage their mental health.
The Benefits of Regular Sessions
Engaging regularly with a counsellor, either through traditional settings or options like Online Counselling Nova Scotia or other cities allows for consistent support through one's recovery journey. This regularity helps build a trusting relationship between the counsellor and the individual, which is crucial for effective therapy. Over time, individuals learn to open up about their deepest concerns and receive guidance tailored to their specific needs. Regular sessions also provide a structured approach to mental health that can often bring a sense of stability and predictability to one's life, which is beneficial during turbulent times.
Accessibility and Flexibility
One significant advantage of modern counselling services, such as Online Therapy Nova Scotia or nearby, is the accessibility and flexibility they offer. People can receive help from the comfort of their homes, which is particularly beneficial for those who may face mobility challenges or live in remote areas. This accessibility ensures that more people can receive help when they need it without the barriers of travel and time. Moreover, the flexibility of online sessions means that therapy can fit seamlessly into individuals' lives, helping them to maintain consistency with their sessions, which is vital for effective treatment.
Counselling Tailored to Individual Needs
Each person's journey to mental health recovery is unique, and so the approach to counselling must be personalized. Services and other regions recognize the diversity of needs and offer various forms of therapy and support structures to match. From one-on-one sessions to group therapy, there are multiple ways individuals can engage in counselling according to what suits them best. Personalization ensures that the counselling process is more effective, as it addresses the specific circumstances and challenges that each individual faces.
Ending Thoughts
Recovering from mental health issues is a journey that requires compassion, patience, and professional support. Services like Counselling Services NL or elsewhere provide the necessary tools and support to help individuals navigate their way through challenging times.

Bedford high school needs support, 'time to heal' following stabbing: NSTU president
The president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) is weighing in after two staff members and a student, who is also the suspect, were injured in a stabbing at Charles P. Allen High School in Bedford, N.S., Monday morning.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) said all three injured individuals, whose identities have not been released, were taken to hospital.
Police say a youth who is a student at the school was taken into custody.
NSTU President Ryan Lutes couldn't provide an update on the two staff members who were injured during an interview with CTV Morning Live Atlantic Tuesday, telling anchor Amanda Debison he only knows what’s been reported in the media.
“We’re certainly working to try to confirm those details,” he said. “And our heart goes out to the victims and to the school community, the students, the staff, they’re going to really need a lot of support in the coming days.”
Following Monday’s incident, Charles P. Allen High School was placed under a hold-and-secure order while police responded to the scene.
Students were then dismissed early and the school was closed for the day.
An email sent to families by the high school's principal Monday evening said classes will resume Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. for a "mini day."
"School psychologists, school social workers and school counsellors will be available at the school over the coming days to provide individual and small group supports to students who would like to connect with them," said Stephanie Bird.
Lutes says it’s his understanding that it is to give both adults and students support.
“Because oftentimes, especially as teachers, our immediate thoughts go to our students and how we’re going to support them, but the adults in that building, the teachers, the school support staff, the admin team, they’re going to need a lot of support and a lot of counselling through this as well.”
He added that there’s a kind of “sacred bond” when parents send their kids to school – an understanding that they’re going to come home safely and that their schools are free of violence.
“And, obviously, that didn’t happen yesterday, and so the community needs time to heal,” he said. “That’s where our immediate concern is.”
Lutes says the incident hits close to home for himself and other NSTU members.
“I mean, I’m a dad, I’m a high school teacher. We have a lot of members who go to work every day really trying to take everything to the nth degree to support their kids and it hits close to home when something like this happens.
He hopes that in the coming days there will be an investigation into the incident.
“I think it’s incumbent upon all of us, and that’s the NSTU included, to do everything that we can to make sure our schools are as safe as possible for our kids and our staff and we certainly look forward to doing that work with government.”
Monday evening, Nova Scotia's minister of education and early childhood development, Becky Druhan, released a statement calling the incident "very troubling."
In the statement, Druhan said the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development will work with HRCE “to ensure the safety protocols in place worked as intended and determine any next steps.”
It also said the department will work with its partners, including the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.
Lutes says there is open dialogue with the province, with initial conversations taking place Monday with both HRCE and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
“I think our immediate concern is making sure that community is as safe as it can be, as supported as it can be, and then we’ll look to kind of how we can make our schools as safe as we can, because, again, that’s near and dear to teachers’ hearts.”
He added that there has been a rise in violence in schools coming out of the pandemic.
“We’re certainly looking to be a big part of that conversation and have teachers’ perspectives heard and make sure our kids and our school staff and our teachers are as safe as they can be at school.”
He also commended the Charles P. Allen staff for their handling of the incident.
“Obviously, we had an incident and the right procedures were put in place after that to make sure that there was no spillover of the incident and that the rest of the students and staff were kept safe.”
“It was a hard day yesterday,” he added. “And there’s going to be hard days in the coming weeks and months and certainly the NSTU will work and do whatever we can to support both the students and the adults in that building.”

Recovering from mental health issues is a journey that requires compassion, patience, and professional support. Services like Counselling Services NL or elsewhere provide the necessary tools and support to help individuals navigate their way through challenging times.
