BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT, I'm back with more Sad Boat Books for Sad Boat People! But first, some words.

I never dreamed that a silly little graphic I made for some friends would generate this much response on twitter and here, but I'm overjoyed that it resonated with so many of you! I read every single comment and tag, and by far my favorites are all of the people who say some variation of "I thought I was the only one who loved these books." We are NOT alone, there are literally thousands of people who reblogged or retweeted this list-- people of all ages and backgrounds and gender identities. Sad Boat isn't just for old white men! I was also delighted to hear from other librarians who are using this in displays and for reader's advisory. PLEASE go forth and do so with my blessing, nothing would make me happier! I was recently laid off from my librarian job as part of a restructuring under new management (don't worry about me, it sucks right now but I'm gonna be fine), so I would love to think that I'm still contributing to the library ecosystem while I'm out of commission. I would also love to keep making these lists (including one that deals with Sad Boat fiction and one with recommendations for other types of media), and I've never had more time to do it, so if you have suggestions, please drop them in my inbox!

Vessel sings: “Flood me like Atlantic”

When you think about the grammar then it would only make sense if he means the ship, the Atlantic and not the ocean. But who cares about grammar in lyrics!

The reason why I'm bringing this up is because I always thought that this could be a possible layer to the lyrics.

About that ship...let me take this from Wikipedia “SS Atlantic was a transatlantic ocean liner of the White Star Line, and second ship of the Oceanic-class. The ship operated between Liverpool, United Kingdom, and New York City, United States. During the ship's 19th voyage, on 1 April 1873, she struck rocks and sank off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, killing at least 535 people. It remained the deadliest civilian maritime disaster in the North Atlantic Ocean until the sinking of SS La Bourgogne on 2 July 1898 and the greatest disaster for the White Star Line prior to the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912."

So that ship was called Atlantic and it also sank in the Atlantic Ocean....if it wasn't so tragic I'd be laughing right now but I'm not.

Why even bring that up?! Well...there are humans out there who think that stuff like “past life regression” is important. I don't think so btw. In my opinion there is so much stuff out there what's labeled “spirituality” that only keeps you stuck. You can do whatever you want to, listen to whoever you want to. It's just my opinion. That's all.

So...wait. Right....maybe he did that? I mean maybe something like past life regression and maybe something came up that had something to do with that ship, the Atlantic?!

Idk...just an idea. This feels like it leads nowhere and also a bit like a dead-end.

Just wanted to share that, because it's been stuck in my head for quite some time.

Earthspark rant: Starscream's episode bothered me a lot.

Edit: First off, the episode isn't suppose to be about him. It's about the Terrans getting emotionally rocky with each other because of their lost link which lead to Hashtag having a flashback of getting mind controlled. It's also a buildup episode for Robbie's deathly condition in "Prime Time". Showing Robbie having techno veins at the end of it has much less weight and impact than it should because of the focus shift to Starscream. End edit

Secondly, Most Starscream/Megatron dynamics are a two way toxic. SS attempts assassination on Megs; Megs punishes him to near death and the cycle repeats. It's "aggressor on aggressor", not "aggressor on helpless victim".

Until the show clarifies that Starscream's abuse by Megatron is indeed one sided, they should make the kids tread carefully around him as they did with Megatron. It's not like Starscream is innocent when he, too, is a soldier, a war criminal and has a kill count as much as his former leader.

They should have done it already since Nova Storm and Skywarp destroyed BOTH of the Emberstone water caves and nearly killed Robbie and Mo twice. That's a good enough reason for the kids (specifically Thrash because of Swindle) to not trust Screamer because he's close with them.

Back to the main topic, wasn't the episode about helping Robbie? It just jumps to Hashtag's trauma then it jumps to Starscream's and the Terrans had no reaction at losing their life source water that could've healed their brother. Hashtag's trauma wasn't even hinted at in previous episodes - they crammed it into the one episode meant as a buildup for Robbie and Mo, then never mentioning it again (unless I missed it so correct me if I'm wrong).

Tldr; this one episode is a complete mess in focus and characterisation.

I want to hear about castor acklys

castor is my oc who was invented when one time i was listening to preachers daughter and decided i wanted to make a plot that had an album style set up (i am not involved in music and do not make music), the main character dying & a complex sibling dynamic! it started off by outlining 2 albums which are the canon timeline (Saviour's Secret & Brother Of The Sky (Extended)) and then added 2 more for a lighter alternate ending (Husband & Keeper's Lover) but then there was a 3rd alternate ending created (Something Like God) and a final conclusion to castor's story in an album created at the same time as SLG (Gravesite)

it is supposed to have the vibes of southern gothic but its not southern! this all actually happening in britain! but still. GOTHIC, its dark, it has unpleasant themes

HERE ARE SOME WARNINGS BEFORE GOING FORWARD: THIS CONTAINS BRIER DISCUSSION OF KIDNAPPING, DEATH/MURDER, CULTS AND MENTIONS OF ABUSE

the album order is SS (aka C1), BOTS(E), H (aka C3), KL, Gravesite, then SLG and the album titles are all reflective or Castor's "identity"/viewing himself through the connections he has with other people, its not until Castor is dead that he defines himself by anything other than his connection to someone else (or he joins a cult and believes he is Something like God bc thats how cults can be sometimes)

as shown below there is one timeline that doesnt have an album ! there is an album i dont have written (and honestly dont intend to write atm) about castors life if he ran away AND found The Star again

NAMES:

i took a long time deciding character names so i will be explaining them (hyperlinked w the characters tag)

Castor Acklys is a star name (which i very much wanted for symbolic connections to other characters specifically The Star & Nova) + Acklys (from Achlys) is the blindness over someones eyes when they die + (from Achley) being the mythological personification of sorrow

The Star does have a name but that information is on lockdown you arent supposed to know their name and i personally do not even know their gender , but there is symbolism in BOTS(E) abt Castor seeing "The Stars" when he dies, he however dies at 2pm so there are no stars in the sky, he is hallucinating both the night sky and his sibling being present

Charles Mercy Charles is shortened to Chuck then Chuckle (as in laugh) and Mercy bc he is supposed to be the saviour (bonus tag Mercklys)

Abram is from Abam which is a feminine name meaning the second in a pair of twins and also i did just read AFTG when i started working on this project so i may have been influenced there (bonus tag CAbram)

Nova is an astrological name + means New (bonus tag CastorNova)

Dalilah Fare comes from Dalil which means guide but also means witness and Fare to represent the fare paid to ride into the underworld

Victor E. Casement bc Victor means conqueror and Casement means God's protector (bonus tag Victonna)

Donna Casement is supposed to be overwhelmingly normal and Donna was a very popular name for i think the 1960s when she would have been born, Casement is her married name and smth she carries from Victor

Irma means whole/complete

Winifred means holy/blessed reconciliations and is the patron saint of virgins

Calamity bc when i googled it, it said that "despite meaning disaster most people take Calamity from Calamity Jane meaning someome good to have in troubled times (idk if i have a calamity tag)

Alice was similar to Donna where its just a popular name from the time she would have been born

Simon just felt like a 1934 name

Angie , same as above

Kory genuinely bc I liked the name and it suited how i picture her in my head

THE TIMELINES:

the acklysverse is split into 3 timelines

1934

Dalilah Fare runs away to marry her lover Simon, she is sadly kidnapped and killed. This leaves behind her lover Simon and her younger sister Angie, who get married! (dw, Dalilah is very happy for them!)

1984: 50 years later,

Castor is the younger sibling after his sibling (The Star) runs away and is presumed dead. C1 & BOTS(E) (canon timeline) are following Castor's life before and leading up to The Star leaving, including Castor falling in love with Charles Mercy (the leading romance in C1!), Charles is very sweet and charming but has a bit of a saviour complex. He believes everything will always be okay because, for him, it always has been, and Castor's life issues (abusive family, flight risk sibling, confusing sexuality crisis, etc, etc.) will eventually just stop, he genuinely believes he can save Castor but the thing is he cant. Castor knows this and wants to cut his losses early but feels torn abt hurting Charles since Charles has not yet come to terms with not being able to help Castor. C1 ends with their break up after Castor has known for a while that it is not going to work out and Charles finally realises the same.

This is the first album bc its the first time Castor uses the song/album set up to explore his emotions on the situation. So BOTS(E) reflects on Castor's life as whole. I like to call it The Life and Death of Castor Acklys. This explores Castor realising his home life is unhealthy and then he loses The Star bc they run away which causes even more fall out. Living in an abusive household he decides he can not stay in and realising this is probably what drove The Star to leave, so he also runs away less than a year later and is also sadly, kidnapped from a bus stop and killed. The Extended of this album is one of my favourite ways the albums communicate anything bc BOTS is Castor's life and (E) is Castor's death, all extended tracks are post mortem.

Skipping forward a few albums bc the others are Alt84 (see below) we get to Gravesite ! This is the return of Dalilah <3 and the reveal that Dalilah's ghost has been here the whole time. Dalilah's death is cosmicly interconnected to Castor's (more on this later) and she has been watching his life happen since Castor was 13 when the events began that would lead to his death began being set into play by the universe. Gravesite is Castor's death and welcoming to the afterlife from Dalilah's perspective of trying to stop this all from happening! We also learn that Dalilah's death is almost a perfect mirror of Castor's, in the same location, by the same cause of death, same last words, same final regrets. They are soulmates in the most intimate but tragic sense.

Alternate 1984

Alt 1: C3 + KL,

Alternately, Castor never runs away. In a different time in a different life, Castor stays and gets married before he's 20 to Abram. Abram is amazing and perfect and Castor is deeply unhappy bc he doesn't want Abram as a husband but marrying him got Castor away from his home and into a life that was 100% his own. Abram loves Castor deeply and romantically and without any strings attached and Castor cant understand why he cant just love Abram back when all he wants is a friend (and maybe a little bit still trying to fill in the hole The Star left when they left) but will take Abram as a lover to avoid losing yet another person he loves. During their marriage, Castor meets Nova <3 a shopkeeper he begins to fall for and have an affair with. C3 ends with Castor and Abram's divorce and Castor trying to process a lot of things he has to deal with. KL then explores Castor's first 100% healthy and reciprocated relationship and unpacking and reevaluating everything he has come to know bc he lacked those healthy relationships !

ALT 2: SLG

Instead of being killed, Castor still runs away but chooses to walk to a different more active bus stop hoping it will delay his family who may look for him from actually knowing where he went. At this bus stop he meets Victor E. Casement, a current cult leader but ex professor. He slowly warms to Victor over a few weeks and ends up diving head first into said cult, where we see the inner workings of this cult through Castor's eyes as he becomes friends with Donna, Victor's wife.

2004

You may be thinking "hey if everyones dead and 2004 follows canon how could there be anything to happen next? is this another alternative?" well! 2004 does follow canon! in a morbid way! 2004 follows canon in terms of the fact that Castor was only the main character of his timeline!

THERES A BACKGROUND PLOT WITH THE MURDERERS!

The man who killed Dalilah is in fact the great uncle (grandmothers brother) of the man who killed Castor! This information about a family history of murder was not passed along but was found in Dalilah's killers old jounrals and then replicated by Castor's killer. The time jump is much smaller now bc that information has been passed on directly, Castor's killer talks to his child about his crimes and it is replicated in 2004 with the next in line, Kory. Kory is also cosmicly interconnected to Dalilah and Castor who are doomed to repeat the cycle of trying and failing to save the next victim. And its almost identical again, another soulmate !

SIDE CHARACTERS:

Irma : Castor's best friend who dies shortly after The Star leaves, the cause of death is never specified but her absense is smth he feels strongly about

Winifred : Castor's mother *was maternal grandmother for a while but that was altered as the plot developed

Alice : A cult member and Victor's friend since before they were a cult

Angie Fare : Dalilah's sister and Nova's grandmother

Simon : Dalilah's ex lover & brother in law, and Nova's grandfather

Calamity : Castor's maternal cousin

"We don’t know a lot. I’m guessing the three men never met in life. Two were buried in the summer of 1915. In February 1916, the third of them died. They might have known each other before they got to Kingston — but since we don’t know where they came from, or when they arrived, there’s no way of knowing. They weren’t the only ones who died in captivity — 20 men succumbed after being confined in Kingston’s Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane, also known as the Rockwood Lunatic Asylum. Eight were misidentified as “Austrians” while the other 12 were Germans. All were branded as “enemy aliens” during Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914-1920. “Dozens” of those deemed “insane,” collected from various asylums across Canada, were among the 2,000 or so “aliens” returned to Europe after the war. The first repatriates sailed in July 1919 aboard the SS Sicilian. The last batch were on the SS Melita, which steamed east from St. John in March 1920. None of them had any choice. They were deported whence they came.

The Rockwood three we know something about were named Dezső Benscura, Walter Grooham and Andreas Moritsky. Whether those are accurate renderings of their names, recorded by immigration officials or jailers who had little knowledge or interest in the languages, nations or faith groups of eastern Europe, I can’t say. As noted on Sept. 30, 1920, in a final report tabled by General Sir William Desmond Otter, the officer in charge of the Office of Internment Operations, 8,579 men along with 81 women and 156 children, were herded into 24 camps behind Canadian barbed wire. Of that number, 106, a majority of them “Austrians,” were deemed “insane” and placed in provincial institutions — at Ponoka, Alta.; Essondale, B.C.; Brandon, Man.; Hamilton, Rockwood, and Mimico, Ont.; St Jean de Dieu, Que.; with three other internees hospitalized in Nova Scotia. Only one man, an “Austrian,” died of “insanity.” What killed the other two at Rockwood is not preserved in the historical record.

Gen. Otter claimed that “great care was observed in having the cause of death established and recorded, the place of burial marked, due regard being paid to the latter ceremony, while the effects of the deceased were cared for and whenever possible their nearest of kin informed.”

Records were kept about some deaths, like the names of the six men killed attempting to escape including the dates on which they were shot. And perhaps the possessions of some of the 107 deceased internees were, somehow, returned to their families. But the three buried in Kingston were laid to rest in unmarked graves, somewhere within the confines of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, no one knows exactly where. That they ended up in this burial ground is likely because they were Catholics, as many immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire would have been. Or perhaps it was because their mortal remains were not wanted at the Cataraqui Cemetery, a territory then reserved for this city’s Anglo-Celtic and Protestant elites.

Were they buried close to each other? No one knows. Was a prayer said over each man before he was covered, as Gen. Otter wrote? I hope so. But I doubt that any of their family members or friends left in the “old country” — somewhere in that multinational, multi-confessional, and multilingual Austro-Hungarian Empire that would itself disintegrate at the end of the First World War — would ever find out what happened. These men simply disappeared. Having left their homelands hoping for a better life they never suspected that arriving with an Austro-Hungarian passport would mark them, under the terms of the War Measures Act, as “enemy aliens,” subject to detention and forced labour. Even more galling was that they knew they had done no wrong. They had immigrated legally. They were not criminals. And yet, following the outbreak of the Great War, they found themselves suddenly treated as prisoners-of-war, without just cause. Thousands of Ukrainians and other Europeans suffered various state-sanctioned indignities. I’m sure that many of you out there have heard of the “Hannibal Directive”. It actually is a thing: it instructs the IDF that, in case a soldier is captured by a non-state enemy, mission priority immediately switches to interdicting the enemy before they can return home. The goal is to rescue soldiers from hostage takers, captivity, and torture.

Of course, the pro-Hamas crowd has twisted this into a conspiracy theory whereby Israel killed the 300 victims of the Nova music festival massacred preemptively to prevent them falling into Hamas hands. This is not only a complete lie, it’s based on deeply antisemitic assumptions about Jewish respect for life and care for captives, not to mention old tropes about the length Jews will go to manipulate and dissemble, even killing our own to make gentiles look bad. There are Holocaust denial theories that make similar claims.

Speaking of the Holocaust, the pro-Hamas crowd also loves to bring up the Haavara agreement. Historically, this was a 1933 deal that allowed some Jews to escape Nazi Germany to Mandatory Palestine with their property. The Jews were granted exit visas on the condition that they spent money on German products. It was an attempt to ransom Jews from the clutches of an antisemitic dictatorship before things went from bad to worse. Haavara saved Jewish lives. No wonder anti-Zionists hate it. Anti-Zionists twist Haavara into supposed proof of a deep Zionist-Nazi collaboration, even though its whole purpose was to buy Jews’ freedom. In Judaism, ransoming captives is an important value.

By contrast, the leader of Arabs in Mandatory Palestine moved to Germany, had audiences with Hitler, toured concentration camps, recruited Muslims for the SS, and organized terrorist insertions to murder Jews. If anyone collaborated with Nazis, it was the Palestinians.

There is a through-running theme here: to gentiles, Jews are suspect when rescuing Jews. Gentiles may be heroes rescuing Jews, but Jews ourselves are supposed to be passive victims, waiting for a savior (itself an antisemitic messianic trope). When Jews step up to defend ourselves, to save our own people in distress, we are seen to have turned evil and murderous, and all manner of old libels about our motives and actions.

Yet when we wait for others to help, none comes in time, ever. We are placed in this double-bind by those who claim to stand for justice and peace. Evidently “justice and peace” require Jews to go like sheep to slaughter, an instrument only for gentile self-congratulation when they spare our tattered remnants.

No more. Never again will we depend on others to rescue our own. This is why Israel exists and will never again fall. Progressives can cry and lie all they like, but we are not going back.

3. S-Tier: Amazing Champions 🌠

S-Tier champions are very efficient and efficient can be the center of many successful teams. - Baeloth: His revive mechanics make him one of the most unusual support champions, who is capable to bring a turn in the battle. - Penelope: DE buffer with sustained abilities that provide depuffs to enemies and boost the offense of the supporting character’s allies. - Nova: Despite the fact that the Nova’s tank is not as powerful as others, she is still useful in a team because of her support abilities.

A-Tier champions are stable and robust and can do well under a number of conditions when properly teamed with others. - Zorbu: A Life Steal/Damage Over Time weapon that is particularly effective in the mid-part of fight against his most favored ‘targets’. - Gromma: An OK support character with semi-usable face control that can be useful in most cases. - Widdle: Widdle is the best for placing speed buffs as she is the specialist in boosting the efficiency of the team and its speed. Such champions are safe picks and can be perfectly used to tune up S and SS-Tier champions to create a powerful triumvirate.

5. B-Tier: Above Average Champions 👍

B-Tier champions are decent performers who can be useful in specific formations or scenarios. (I'm really bad at not doing these at night, so sorry for not posting sooner!)

Story #4

This story is an amalgamation of many little stories that I'm going to piece together here. Little moments from throughout my time spent with Papa, but these are all car show moments summed up in one story.

Papa and I loved going to car shows together. Growing up, I would go with him, my biological dad, a childhood friend, and if my biological dad had a girlfriend, she'd most likely come to. Car shows were always special as you'd never hear the same little story snippets twice.

"I used to have one of them way back when..."

"Oh, I knew someone who had one of them..."

"This one sure looks pretty, don't it? It's a..."

He never ceased the snippets of car stories from his past. He would tell me about makes, models, and years of old cars, adding in identifiers to make sure I knew what I was seeing. He'd talk about the different engines and even transmissions these cars had, commenting on how well he liked them or how easy they could be to work on or not.

No matter what, we always ended up back at his car, a 1966 Chevy 2 Nova SS in the color Stratto Blue by the House of Colors. You had to say it just like that, or you just weren't saying it right.

If I got to ride with him to or from car shows, it was always the best time getting looks from people as we drove by, saying the car was beautiful. He would tell the story of how he ordered one brand new but never went to pick it up, and how he regretted it and searched for this car his whole life until he found it at the Mendon Dust Off car show. He would show me the picture of how it was originally a dark, dark blue, but he wasn't a big fan, so he scoured every blue paint sample book in the shop until he got to the last one and found Stratto Blue and said, "This is it. This is the one."

Every time we drove it, he'd tell me it was going to be mine someday. That I was going to get his pride and joy. When I turned 18, he put my name on the title with his own, just to make sure.

So, now that car is mine. But, even now, I find it extremely difficult to look at and even more difficult to drive it. Everyone sees that car and thinks of him, and now he's not with it, I am. I only hope that with working to get counseling on things that I can comfortably drive that car someday. I want to make Papa proud to say that he gave his pride and joy to me from wherever he is in the afterlife. And I think for this story, I'm going to add a picture. He insisted on taking it because his shirt matched his car, but the graphic was on the back. Now, it's one of most fitting pictures I have of him.

I mean these guys basically come pre-paired lol, they are just both so nice and supporting and they exude positivity despite the fact that they both went through so much and lost people they cared about. Like these guys are just endgame happy couple slice of life kinda shit that rots your teeth from watching how sweet they would be to each other.

Sturges calls Preston ‘boss’ already but I like to imagine that the SS eventually gets horses down to the Commonwealth from Nova Scotia (if you can boat to Far Harbour you can make it there) and the Minutemen gain cavalry and now Sturges also calls Preston his cowboy and he fixes up an old motorbike to ride alongside him (Sturges likes horses but he would not ride one - he trusts a machine more than a thing he watched get spooked at it’s own shadow).

So. Am working on requests but the other night I had an odd flash of ideas so here is this au w DJ SS and Neon J! The TLDR is that J is basically a wolf monster-shifter living in the woods with his deer monster sons and Nova is a magic scientist on probation, trying to get back in the good graces of his peers by investigating a local legend of the once-affluent Metro Division. More details under the cut hehe

Basically, in this AU technology and wild magic are in a near constant state of conflict because of the encroaching of sterile cities into the wilds. Idk if I’ll ever work out the details, but in some places wild places have almost completely overtaken civilization almost overnight, the Metro Division being one of those places.

Professor Subatomic Supernova has always struggled to get recognition in his career as a magical theorist, particularly because he is a kind of magical being called a starfolk (subject to change), which have incredibly wild and unstable magic that fluctuates with the individuals emotions. The more technology oriented civilization (name pending) is suspicious of starfolk bc of the unpredictable nature of these powers, and Nova has as a result spent most of his life suppressing his feelings and relying on logic. However, a particularly bad day caused an outburst of energy to destroy much of his classroom, though no one was hurt. Nova was humiliated and put on probation, and he’s desperate to regain all of the progress he’s made over his career.

enter the metro division, a once technological city that is mostly covered by choking weeds and fungus, though a few people still live there. There are rumors of a powerful monster lurking in the depths of the woods, though the locals certainly are not talking. Nova goes to the metro division in order to solve the mystery, conquer this beast through Science and Logic, and get the scientific acclaim that he’s always longed for.

Neon J is a guardian of decay, of life coming out of death. It’s almost fitting, since he was a war veteran put into a robotic shell before embracing an existence in the woods instead. He’s a wolf creature with limbs made of dead wood and with mushrooms and moss covering him every so often. He can shift from wolf form to a humanoid form, but the transformation is very taxing on him. Hes the adopted father of five kirin, and rather powerful in his scope. His woods border on the Natura Forest, and he often clashes with the matriarch there. he intends to scare nova off, protective of his territory and his charges. There’s a greater threat lurking in the woods’ heart, however - a leftover of the very war jay was a part of, and he will need both the help of nova and the matriarch of natura to preserve the life he has built

Mal: people who think their all that and try to get stuff for free. Or won't stand up and work to make things better for themselves. And liers.

Cash: when people drink alcohol around him. He went to rehab. He struggled with alcohol for who knows how long and you can't wait untill he's gone? or are rude for absolutely no reason.

Crisp: people who waste perfectly good produce. Or assume hes slacking just because he takes a nap or two during the day.

Cider: same as his brother, they both can't stand seeing food wasted. Also good mashines and such. That makes him angry as well. That could've been reused!!
