nova's declassified school survival guide

Minseo felt inadequate when it came to promotions. She felt more comfortable performing, but appearing on variety shows was a different beast entirely for her. She had taken workshops as a trainee. It wasn't like she was pushed into the deep end and told to swim. She found it too difficult to be herself, especially after receiving feedback that there was a delicate balance between being genuine and presenting a more polished version of her personality that was digestible to viewers. Not to mention that she had to be funny and that required impeccable timing. She had stopped listening halfway through, but her overall takeaway was that she was way in over her head and she needed a lot more practice.

She wanted to enjoy to the fullest when the group appeared on variety shows and observe the fellow members shine in different ways rather than focusing on the gnawing level of dread in the pit of her stomach. It was another reason that she found Milan so captivating when the group shot variety content. Her friend seemed to have mastered that delicate balance and she lost herself on set, enjoying seeing Milan as a viewer rather than someone who needed to interact back. She was an absolute fan of Nova's Milan. She knew Idol Human Theater was bound to be an entertaining time for the entire group with each girl having a specific rule to follow and hers was the closest to her personality.

"So, what I'm trying to say is that there is a disturbance in the energy of this room..." She continues on her tangent about there being a ghost in their classroom. "The lights above us sometimes flickers and there is barely anyone at this time. I don't think our classmates are running above us for the lights to do that... And there is a draft right in the corner!" She points to the far left corner of the room, holding up the fish puppet she had created out of the paper with the scales lifting up. The plan would be to place it in position and wait for the scales to move. Of course, there was a vent right above the corner, but that was trick of a rookie magician. "I'll prove it to you. I'll ask Milan to come and help me out as a witness."

NOVA MISSION 002 POST TYPE: STARTER FOR @lgcnayoung TITLE: TEA SPILL

to be completely honest, mmtg is the schedule milan had been looking forward to the most. not only for the opportunity to appear on the show, but because of the show itself. to put it simply; milan adores the mc, jaejae, and the show in general. as always the expressive one, her love for the show and the host had been clear from the moment she stepped in the room they are using as studio today; both hands covering her opened mouth, eyes shiny and opened wide as her gaze darts from one side to an other to take everything in. of course she hadn’t been able to hold back from gushing her love to the host when they officially greeted each other.

even several minutes after the official filming has begun, she’s still completely starstruck in front of the older woman as she conducts their interview/variety appearance. “speaking of predebut moments, miss ‘sasaenge one and only baby?’” without missing a beat, jaejae sings milan’s famous lyrics from ‘rising’. “yes!” milan replies enthusiatically, leaning forward, wondering what she could’ve done prior to nova to catch anyone’s attention. “you had your own youtube show, and some people have noticed that you were quite biased towards nayoung, care to explain?” milan chuckles. for starters, nayoung had been her only female guest, which had made it easier to be comfortable with her. and, they were already quite close back then. “i really appreacited all my guests, please don’t misunderstand. it’s just that... nayoung unnie is my ideal woman. the vison of her in the hanbok was seriously out of this world.” milan gushes, making jaejae go: “oh my, oh my, oh my. what is this suddenly. nayoung, what do you have to say to milan’s confession?”

this was leo's very first role. the adventure excited him, but also scared him. in all of his life he had never been in a serious relationship. how was he supposed to give the illusion of tension in a relationship? maybe he could think back to when he liked someone? would that be the same thing? leo was almost obsessive with the mindset of doing a perfect job. this was his career he was thinking about.

so he decided to do the only thing he thought he could do. call his shipmate. in his head he liked to call it that. it always made him chuckle a bit. they were two people in the same boat and needed to make sure they put on a good show. so he pulled his phone out and sent a message.

Despite not being a variety person, Baek had a whole lot of reasons why he was so excited for this one date. First of all, it was his return to Date Lottery, which is impressive because, with his lack of skills, he didn't expect to make a comeback to the show for a second date. It also meant he was going to continue "dating" Milan, which on itself was also a treat (it's not like their first date didn't go well, but experiences vary, and while he did confirmed his interest in continue the show with her, the reciprocate could be false). And last but not least, the theme was winter activities, and of winter activities he understands (not really, but showing off some confidence never hurt anyone).

"I promise I won't let you fall," he tells Milan probably the most used and mellowest of lines (but he means it) as they walk on their blades in their way to the ice rink. He's standing right by her just in case, but he's pretty confident neither will need the help, at least for now. "It has been ages since I've been to a rink like this myself, I might as well have lost all of my skills by now. Please laugh if I fall, because at least I'll have that instead of just embarrassing myself," he says cheekily as he steps into it and extends a hand to Milan to catch.

The Asia Artist Awards officially reveals that six of Legacy Entertainment’s groups will be doing a collaboration stage

The 9th Asia Artist Awards (referred to as AAA 2024) will be held on December 27 at IMPACT Challenger Hall 1-2 in Bangkok, Thailand. With a few more days until the event, AAA has revealed some exciting news about the collaboration and special stages that will be happening during the 4 hour show.

One of them is the highly anticipated Legacy collaboration stage, which was hinted by AAA a few weeks prior as thousands of people all over the world voted on who they would like to see as a leader. While there wasn’t much information disclosed back then, now it’s announced that for this collaboration stage there will be a total of 6 performances! All of the members of TYPE ZERO, V&A, CRYSTALLIS, FABULA, and NOVA will be participating in this special stage as groups were randomly arranged along with their assigned songs. According to AAA, here are the groups and the songs that they will be covering:

UPDATE: AAA dropped a short video on YouTube where the group leaders were revealed for each of the songs and a sneak preview of the group names! From what the sharp-eyed fans have gathered, CHA HYOSEOP, JC, LEE YUSHIN, SELENE, SEO NINA, and SON NABI are the chosen leaders for this special stage. As for group names, some of them have spotted the following: F4 (team fabula), Hweekly Girls (team agito), NOW4U (team crystallis), spark (team type zero), supernova (team nova). There’s no news yet as to whether AAA or Legacy Entertainment will release any more details about the collaboration stage, but so far it is one of the most talked about collaborations for 2024’s year-end ceremonies.

following the LGC GIRLS VARIETY SURVEY done a few weeks ago, NA PD has invited those who have filled the survey to participate in a new MNET VARIETY SHOW: LGC GIRLS BREAKER. in this 10 episodes show, the girls will be divided in 3 teams (CRYSTALLIS, FABULA and NOVA) who will compete for the BREAKER title in various categories. here are the participants of each team:

EPISODE 1: JAPAN TRIP

through the month of july, each team will meet NA PD individually. they will be told that the production team has taken a look at their survey and have decided to make their wishes come through, starting by sending all the girls to TOKYO, JAPAN for 3 days and 2 nights trip, since many of the girl wanted to travel! they will leave on AUGUST 26 and stay at the famous hotel HOSHINOYA TOKYO where the production team will have reserved two floors or the girls and accompanying staff.

they will have the late afternoon and early evening free to visit tokyo and do whatever they want to in small groups, all followed by their own camera crew. in the evening, the girls will reunite at the hotel well the production crew will have organized a buffet feast with japanese specialities.

on the morning of the second day, the girls will embark on a bus that will take them to the currently active RYŌGOKU KOKUGIKAN, home of sumo. they will be given a tour of the venue and a short history of sumo before reaching the main hall where a twist will be revealed; the true purpose of the trip is to film a competition that will have TEAM CRYSTALLIS, TEAM FABULA and TEAM NOVA compete against each other on the ryogoku kukgikan ring.

EPISODE 2-5: IN THE RING

in their variety survey, the girls had to name a skill or sport they were confident no one could beat them in. this inter team competition is to determine if the girls are truly masters of their pick or not! if a girl manages to defend her title of 'master' her team will received ONE CARD, if a girl from a competiting team manages to win over the title, her team will receive TWO CARDS, if another girl from the same team as the 'master' wins over the title, their team wil receive ONE AND A HALF card. the purposes of these cards will be revealed later! for each 'challenge' a minimum of 2 members and a maximum of 3 may represent their team, only for the 'masters' of each skill it is mandatory to be part of a challenge

CHALLENGE: CUP FILLING

a game where the competitors will have to fill a cup of water will their eyes folded. the person who manages to fill theirs the most without any spilling wins. mandatory for 'water cup master' yang aeri of team nova.

CHALLENGE: SPEED TALKING/TONGUE TWISTERS

a game where the competitors not only have to properly pronounce korean tongue twisters, they must do so as quickly as possible. the person who manages to pronounce the tongue twister the fastest (each attempt will be timed) wins the round. the winner is determined once a person has 3 wins. Mandatory for 'tongue twister masters' yamashita ichika of team crystallis and son nabi of team nova and 'speed talking master' moon hayoung of team fabula.

CHALLENGE: HIGH NOTE

competitors stand in line and each person must sing higher than the previous girl sang. if they do not manage it or their voice crack, they are eliminated. the game keeps going until only one person is left. mandatory for 'high note master' park taeha of team fabula.

CHALLENGE: MEMORIZING CHOICES

during this game, the non competing members will be given a topic and will have to draw on a white board their choice (example: the topic is 'coffee order' and park yumi writes 'flat white'). competitors will have 20 seconds to memorize each girl's choices. the person who manages to get each girl and their order correct the fastest (each attempt will be timed) wins the round. the winner is determined once a person has 3 wins. mandatory for 'coffee orders master' gong hyejoo of team crystallis

CHALLENGE : LIMBO/FLEXIBILITY

a game of limbo to test the girls' flexibility. the bar will progressively get lower. anybody who touches the ground or make the bar fall is eliminated. Keeps going until only one person is left. mandatory for 'limbo master' lee minji of team fabula and 'flexibility master' watanabe miyu of team nova

CHALLENGE: BOY GROUP DANCES

snippet of random boy group songs will be played, the fastest to guess the correct group and song title will have to dance the keypoint of the choreo (i.e: usually the chorus). if they fail at any of these, chance is given to the other competitors to give their guesses and try the choreo. Winner is determined once a person has 3 wins. mandatory for 'kpop dances master' seo yura and 'boygroup dances master' moon somin of team crystallis

including breaks and various set up changes, filming is expected to last until early evening. the girls will be given the evening off, no cameras filming. as long as they keep their managers updated, they will be allowed to do what they want on this second night.

EPISODE 5-8: MIGHT AND BRAIN

on the third morning, the girls will once again hop on a bus that will take them to a sports center this time. they will be asked to get off the bus one by one, after which the staff will blindfold them and deafen them with headphones andtake them to an unspecified location inside the building. once they will be allowed to take their headphones and blindfolds off, they will find themselves with 2 or 3 of their teammates in either a room with various monitors and a microphone or a large closed office, where, on the desk are in-ear pieces of each girl inside the room.

NA PD will then inform them that the girls inside the OFFICES are acting as AVATARS of those inside the MONITOR ROOMS. their goal is to help the girls currently inside the offices clear various challenges to either gain a key to escape a room or gain a clue to find the next key until they find the key to actually free the girls the monitor rooms who hold the last key to escape the building! the first team to escape will receive 8 CARDS, the second team will received 4 CARDS and the last one will get only a SINGLE CARD.

each team will go through around 10 ROOMS before being able to free the girls in the monitor rooms, beginning in an escape room in the form of an office. after deciphering a cypher hidden inside a pencil holder, the girls will be able to unlock the computer, after searching through the files on the computer, they will find a 4 digit code that will unlock a safe hidden behind a painting where they'll find the key to escape this first room.

the following rooms will vary in order and type. some teams will go through same rooms, while others might never come near them. we will not elaborate on each rooms, only those where teams will definitely go through:

INDOOR TOP ROPE CLIMBING ROOM (mandatory: team nova):

the avatar girls will have to climb a 30 feet tall wall and unlock the vault where the key is kept. hints for the combination of the code are found all over the wall at different level. teams will find a mix of numbers and basic math symbols. monitor team will be in charge of solving the mathematical equation.

SWIMMING POOL ROOM (mandatory: team fabula, team nova):

the avatar girls will be seated on ejectable seats while the monitor team will have to answer random trivia questions. If the monitor team gets the answer wrong, all avatar girls will be ejected in the pool. monitor team must give 5 correct answers in a row to escape the room.

MYSTERY BOX ROOM (mandatory: team crystallis, team nova):

what's in the box challenge where the monitor girls will be given a hint of what's in the box (example: the hint is food, once the box is revealed, there are pealed grapes in it) and pick which girl would be good at guessing it. each avatar can only go once in a single round and are only allowed one person guessing their item wrong. should more than one girl be wrong, they'll have to do another round. results are only given at the end of the round.

KARAOKE ROOM (mandatory: team crystallis, team nova):

avatar girls will get to pick a song to sing on a karaoke machine. the song must be from another lgc group/a song they haven't participated in (example: crystallis may pick a fabula, nova, lgc girls fn song. they may also pick a recent lgc girls japan song since none of the members were in, but songs from the first release aren't allowed). to pass the challenge, they must get a minimum score of 95. however, some of the lyrics will be missing and the monitor girls will be the ones in charge of filling the blanks in real time.

GHOST ROOM (mandatory: team fabula):

each avatar girls will have to go through a large dark decrepit old gymnasium storage room while holding a camera. hidden behind boxes and mats are people dressed in ghost. the avatar girls' goal is to reach the end of the room without being caught by the ghosts. if or when caught, the girls will be returned to the entrance. to leave the room, they need to give a password at the door. hints of this password are hidden on walls, boxed, and various objects that can only be clearly seen through the camera feed by the monitor girls. each girl may go once per round. after each round, a hint is added to help guess the password.

ASMR ROOM (mandatory: team crystallis):

a rest room. here, all the avatar girls must prepare and eat a snack (example: peel eggs, prepare ramen, eat chips, open a can of drink, ect) without exceeding 35 decibels. the challenge can only be completed once each avatar girl has eaten one snack and drank one drink.

CHILDREN'S ROOM (mandatory: team fabula):

avatar girls will  have to play games against actual children! monitor girls will be in charge of picking one game at which they believe their avatars can win against children. the choices are: red light green light, tops (paengi), rubber band game and gonggi. avatars only need to win one game, however, for each game lost, they get their forehead flicked by the kids.

HIDE AND SEEK ROOM (mandatory: team crystallis, team nova):

in a very large props storage room, the avatars will get 30 seconds to hide from a staff member. their goal is not get found until the monitor girls guess correctly how many 'la' are in a given nova song (possible songs: rising, girls' capitalism, generation, draw (my time), play love game). if the monitor girls don't manage to guess the correct answer before all the avatar girls are found, the game starts again with a new song.

STAMINA ROOM (mandatory: team fabula):

in a gym with various equipment, each avatar girls must challenge one coach in an exercise they are confident in (example: wall chair). meanwhile, the monitor girls will be given a chance to help their avatars by playing deaf guessing game, where one person must try to get another one to guess a word just by reading their lips. for each word they get right, the competing coach gets 2 pounds added on them.

RELAY RACE ROOM (mandatory: all):

on a track field, the avatar girls will have to run through various obstacles holding a rolled up paper. once they reach the next girl, they must unroll that paper and tell the monitor girls the word on it, meawhile the monitor girls have 5 seconds to say one related word to it (example: first word is 'beach', the monitor girls say 'sun', 'sand', 'sunscreen'). should the monitor girls fail to get the words in the allocated time, the avatar must go back to her starting point, pick a new roll and go through her obstacle again. once the monitor girl succeeds, the next avatar girl can finally go ahead. first obstacle: jump on one foot. second obstacle: wear and inflated suit. third obstacle: jump to get a bite of ring corn snack dangling from a string.

ARTS ROOM (mandatory: team crystallis):

monitor girls are given 45 seconds to describe a word to an avatar girl who will have to draw what the monitor girls tell her (word example: an apple). monitor girls cannot use the word or any word related to it (example: say 'fruit' in the case of apple) to help the person drawing. after time has ran out, the other avatar girls have 45 seconds to guess the word. the group passes as soon as they guess one word correctly.

after filming this segment, the girls will fly back to korea. winners will be announced at the end of the event.

EPISODE 9-10: GLAMPING

finally, on SEPTEMBER 2 the girls will be heading to 67 VILLAGE for a 1N2D glamping retreat! upon arrival, they will learn that the cards they've been collecting are for a FOOD BINGO. they will be allowed to fill as many cards as they are given with food items. meanwhile, a buffet with corresponding food will be set up for the other guests of the resort who will get to pick only one item. what they pick will decide which 'food' comes out on the girls' cards. the fastest team to get a bingo will received 150,000 won, the second team 100,000 won and the third 50,000won, all to use on groceries. winners will be announced at the end of the event.

the rest of the time will be used by each team to cook various dishes that the whole group will share in the evening. after their meal, all the girls will get to sit in a circle and discuss memories of filming, hopes for the future for lgc girls or anything they want to share about this experience. finally, they will get to hang out in mix and match groups in their tents.

Resistance and propaganda to fascism did not begin in 1939, 1936 or 1939. Nor did it consist simply of slogans hastily painted on walls in the dead of night. A powerful anarchist underground press operated in Italy throughout the period of fascist dictatorship and occupation pressing the case for liberation through social revolution. To gauge the extent of the resistance to fascism and Nazi occupation in Italy, here is a review of the libertarian underground press at the time

Voci officina (Voice of the factories)

Underground paper put out by workers of the Turin factory councils, among them the anarchists Michele Guasco and Dante Armanetti. 8 or 9 issues in the first year of fascist terror.

Anarchist review open to all tendencies. Produced monthly in Paris in 1924–5, when together with the Italian section of Rivista Internazionale Poliglotta (International Polygot Review) it ceased publication to produce La Tempra

L’Adunata dei Libertari: voci dei comunisti libertari (voice of the libertarian communists)

Milan. Underground publication of first 3 numbers., first one appearing 18th June 1944. Small format with 3 columns, 2 pages. Editor was Pietro Bruzzi, arrested, tortured and shot by the Nazis at Legnano.

Il Comunista libertario.

Milan. Paper of the Federazione Comunista Libertaria Italiana. First appeared December 1944. Small format with 3 columns, 4 pages. In March 1945 its second issue appeared, and continued regularly until the end of April 1945, with the final fall of fascism

L’Azione Libertaria

Milan. 5 issues appeared from August to September 1944 in the same format as above papers, and indeed most of the underground press.

Rivoluzione

Paper of the Liga dei Consigli Rivoluzionari (League of Revolutionary Councils) From December 1944 included the programme of the Liga. Composed of communists, anarchists and sympathizers. Second issue appeared in February 1945.

Era Nuova

“Voice of the libertarian communists”. Turin. First issue appeared in October 1944, 2 columns, small format, 4 pages. 2nd issue in November ’44 and third in March ’45.

L’Adunata dei Refrattari.

New York. At the end of ’44 the New York Italian anarchist paper published several supplements aimed at Italy. Thin paper, small format, 2 columns, 8 pages. It was distributed above all by soldiers in the American Armed Forces, despite the American authorities heavily punishing anyone involved in its dissemination. Issue 1 in December ’44 and Issue 3 in March ’45.

Umanita Nova.

Anarchist paper. Genoa. Published just a little before insurrection against the fascist authorities and in preparation for it, 22 April ’45. Small format, 3 columns, 4 pages. Continued numbering from when it was a daily paper published in Milan and Rome and edited by Malatesta in 1920–1922.

Umanita Nova

Anarchist paper. Florence. Appeared 24th September ’44, without the authorization of the Allied authorities. The printer Lato Latini was arrested and condemned to 1 year in prison. In February ’45, after a suspension of several months, restarted on a monthly basis with Umanita Nova; Fiorentina (Florentine)as subtitle and with announcement that the Federzione Anarchica Italiana was being formed. Prematurely as it happens, as the FAI was now constituted until the Carrara conference in September 1945

Auf Ruf: Offizere, Unteroffizere und Mannschaften der Deutschen Wehrmacht. Appeal in German put out by Milanese anarchists to the German armed forces in March 1945

Pamphlets of Risveglio-Reveil.

Published somewh ere in Switzerland. After the suppression of this Swiss paper, small pamphlets of 16 pages on a monthly basis (half in Italian, half in French) appeared from September 1940. Changed title several times, but continued with a surprising regularity up until the end of December 1946 with no.147

La Rivoluzione Libertaria.

Organ of the libertarian groups of southern Italy. Bari. It was the first official anarchist paper since the fascist takeover. Initially it appeared on 30th June ’44 without Allied authorization, and was distributed secretly until 16th November ’44 when it was legalized.

L’Idea Proletaria

Milan. 2,000 copies printed. Edited by Mario Perelli with a vague , gradualist line. Came out from Autumn ’43, with a short life.

Sempre Avanti!

Anarchist paper secretly printed and distributed in Genoa.

Il Seme Libertario

Single issue paper of the Federazione Comunista Libertaria of Livorno. Appearing semi-clandestinely, because of persistent censorship of Allied authorities in summer 1945, with false indication of its address (Rome)

Aurora

Libertarian communist (Ravenna). Paper of the Romagna anarchists,; its first 2 issues appeared clandestinely.

Il Partigiano

Political weekly of the partisans of liberty. Rome. Anti-authoritarian political line , edited by Carlo Andreoni, libertarian Marxist militant of the Unione “Spartaco”. Underground publication from ’43, continued up until ’45, probably tolerated by the Allied authorities because not directly anarchist, but suspended for 4 issues in march ’45, for “having published forbidden notices of the Allied military censorship”.

La Montagna

Libera voce clandestine. Rome. Paper of “a group of partisans of the North” taking the place of Il Partigiano during its forced suspension. On its list of @friends and neighbours@ was Umanita Nova.

Julien was beginning to wish he’d stayed in Cologne.

He’d been vacationing there; the first real vacation he’d treated himself to after half a decade of work for Hemisphere. Of course, he traveled on Hemisphere’s dime often, but that wasn’t the same. He went where he was sent, killed the person he was told to kill, and went back to Montreal to debrief with his handler. This trip was supposed to be different. It should have just been Julien, the Rhine River, and the most expensive alcohol his hotel had to hand.

Obviously, it hadn’t shaken out that way. Not when Intelligence had caught wind of Leo Hennig booking an economy class ticket on the Göttingen to Milan. Lillian, Julien’s handler, had explained brusquely over the phone that Intelligence had been keeping an eye on Hennig’s work for the past few years. He had invented some new type of car engine, the schematics for which currently resided in a lopsided leather briefcase in the luggage rack above Julien’s head.

“You want me to steal those papers,” he’d guessed, over the phone.

“Please. I wouldn’t pull you away from vacation for something that easy,” Lillian had said. “We want you to kill Hennig before he gets to Italy. Then steal the papers.”

“How much of a priority are the papers?”

Lillian had leaned away from the phone, then, to confer with someone else in muffled tones.

“Less of a priority than killing Hennig,” she’d said, upon her return. “As long as no one else gets their hands on them, we’ll consider it a success. Destroy them if you have to.”

Julien had found that instruction surprising at the time, and he still did. Sure, the election was coming up and it wouldn’t do for any other branch of Hemisphere to have intelligence that could give them a leg up in the race. But all this fuss over a single set of blueprints? That engine must really be something special.

“What are you thinking about?” Hennig asked from the seat next to his.

“Nothing, nothing,” Julien said, with false good cheer. He bounced his leg, jostling the toe of his brogue against the seat in front of him, and glanced past Hennig to the window. “Just admiring the view. I’ve never been through the mountains like this before.”

“They are beautiful, aren’t they?” Hennig agreed. He had switched to English just as soon as he’d realized Julien wasn’t a native German speaker, and he spoke it well, albeit with a heavy accent. “You should see them in the winter. My wife and I ride the Express to Switzerland every Christmas to visit her family, and ski.”

“To be honest,” Julien said, and he was being entirely truthful, “I’m starting to regret not making more time to stop in Switzerland.”

Hennig smiled. “Perhaps we can stop together, on our way back.”

“Perhaps,” Julien said, politely returning the smile. He had told Hennig that he was a mechanical engineer from Nova Scotia on his way to the same convention Hennig was attending in Italy. Julien had his doubts on whether or not that convention actually existed, but Hennig certainly believed it did, which was a good enough foundation for a false backstory.

He also didn’t have to pretend that this would be his first time in Italy. He’d never been sent there on assignment. Come to think of it, as far as Julien knew, no one had. There was a Hemisphere presence there–they’d gotten their roots into the Vatican–but the place was a bit of a black box beyond that knowledge. Dealing with Italy meant being prepared for anything, which was why he’d been aggrieved but not entirely surprised to see two of the Pope’s own cardinals aboard the train.

The Hemisphere Russia agents sitting a few rows back from Julien and Hennig had been a surprise, though. As had the American Central Intelligence agent who clearly expected no one would recognize her in her stewardess outfit. As had the nuns, though the nuns were less  competition and more of an obstacle when it came to the simple fact of killing a man unremarked. There were just so many of them. And so many ways this whole operation could go sideways in an instant.

Still, Julien had come equipped with something he was almost certain none of the other Hemisphere agents aboard the Göttingen to Milan Economy Line had: the ability to call for help.

“Well, nature calls,” he announced to Hennig, standing up. He’d chosen the aisle seat for a quick getaway. “Maybe we’ll grab some lunch upstairs once I’m back, eh? I’m starting to feel peckish.”

He had a small, dissolvable packet of poison in his breast pocket, and a few more inside his briefcase. Even on vacation, he’d packed them. He liked to be prepared. But there was no way he’d be able to kill Hennig with the Russians so close, and so obviously interested in the same target. Hennig had already given his water bottle away to the ill-looking Russian still in his seat, removing any opportunity Julien would have liked to have to poison it. Upstairs in the dining car would be safer. Less opportunities for distraction.

“Yes, I could eat,” Hennig agreed.

Julien ended the conversation there by turning and making his way to the closest restroom. Mostly out of curiosity, he scanned the seats he passed on the way for any sign of the cardinals or the other Russian, and came up empty. That was fine–Julien didn’t particularly care what they were up to, as long as they were keeping their distance. None of the other agents aboard the train, even the American, seemed to have recognized him or deemed him anything but an annoyance keeping them from closer contact with Hennig. He would have to be quick with this errand, but not so quick that he gave the game away.

He reached the bathroom, and shut the door behind him. It was roomier inside than Julien had expected, but oppressively warm, blanketed by a floral perfume smell. He leaned against the sink and dug his Notebook from his jacket pocket.

It resembled an actual notebook when flipped shut, the small kind that a detective or journalist might use. Flipped open, its top half was a display screen that also responded to touch, and its bottom half was a small keyboard. Julien punched in the number to Lillian’s phone, already well aware that she would pick up no matter what time of day it was in Montreal, and waited.

She picked up on the third ring. “This better be good. Your chip says you’re still on the train. Did you kill him?”

“Not yet.” Julien was pretty sure she had guessed as much, but he wasn’t about to beat around the bush. “You’ll want to hear this, though. It’s practically a Hemisphere convention in here.”

“How so?”

“I’ve clocked two Italian cardinals, two Russian agents, and an American spy. I don’t know if they’re all here for the same mark, but the Russians have been trying to get friendly with him.”

To her credit, Lillian only lapsed into nonplussed silence for a couple of seconds.

“Are you made?” she asked.

“No,” Julien said. “I don’t think so. I gave the Russians an alias, and they don’t seem to care about me. The American is disguised as a stewardess, but hasn’t singled me out for anything. And I haven’t seen the cardinals since I boarded.”

“Then the mission’s still on,” Lillian replied. “Kill Hennig, and be discreet about it.”

“Really?” he asked, in spite of himself. He realized now that a part of him had been hoping to hear Lillian call everything off, tell him to leave the train, and let him go back to Cologne. Maybe his description of the situation hadn’t gotten his misgivings across.

“I’ll report the presence of the other agents–” There was the sound of shuffling papers and keys clacking. “Vannier-Vanier won’t be happy, but it’s good intel at least. Anything else?”

Julien sighed, but made sure to do so inaudibly. Asking in no uncertain terms to be pulled off the mission wasn’t on the table. It was unprofessional. This was Canada’s only shot at Hennig before he vanished into the tar pit that was Italy, and Julien was supposed to be one of their best.

Instead, he asked, “Do we have anything on a faction of nuns?”

“Nuns?”

“Never mind,” he said. “I doubt they’re relevant. I’ll call you for extraction when I’m finished.”

“Good luck out there,” Lillian said. “And sorry about pulling you off vacation. I know you never get much ‘you time’.”

“It’s not a problem,” Julien lied smoothly, though he could count on one hand the number of times in his life he had lied to Lillian. He smiled, tight-lipped, and hung up on her.

When you come to think about it, being an idol is so funny. Having an entertainment job is amusing to put it mildly. Getting paid to dance and sing and perform are things he can wrap his head around, because things like that require real effort from his side and many others. Acting is about you pretending to be someone else in pretended situations. Variety is, and maybe that’s why he’s bad at it and not exactly the best pick for it, about having people who show off their best sides to entertain people and make them laugh. Baek lacks in that department the most, it’s even a little funny.

Which maybe is even more praise for Milan, who has managed to make him feel not like awkward dude, and more like an actual person who might be more interesting than just a tall plank of wood. He bows in similar fashion and offers her a perfect salute right after, “leave it to me, miss. I’ll give you an Oscar-worthy performance.”

Baek scoffs good-heartedly and pulls one of his legs up to his chest so he can hug it instead of leaving his hands on his sides. “There should be sillier geese around. I think the world would be a more fun place like that. I’ll take a word from your book some other day,” he clicks his tongue and nods his head affirmatively. “To be honest, Zennies have been so sweet since we joined TZ, I obliged to believe you because there’s nothing to prove the contrary there.”

Just imagining the scenario, they are making up in their minds is enough to make Baek scowl and shake his head in distaste, “no, definitely not. Even more glad now that we were paired up instead.” Because what if he was unlucky enough to get together, he was actually close to, or even worse, someone he’s actually interested in. Baek likes to think he’s a good actor, but he’s certainly not that good, and he’s aware of it. After clinking glasses and putting his down somewhere it wouldn’t spill, Baek then straightens his back and takes one of the sandwiches that smell delicious and caught his eye from the moment she displayed them. He pretended to evaluate it from all sides before taking a generous bite and was not surprised that it actually tasted as good as he had imagined it. He does as he promised though, and Baek’s eyes go a bit too wide as he chews, and he hums pleasantly. He gives her an enthusiastic thumbs up, and once he finishes chewing, he finally says, “Milan, these are amazing! So tasty!”

it's no secret that milan wasn't cast by legacy for her amazing stage talents since she had none when she joined the company. she's also quite skeptical that her visuals have anything to do with it, when there are people line nabi, miyu and nayoung around. no, she's quite average when it comes to looks. no, what got her in was her personality and she's taken on fulfilling the role of variety persona in her group quite seriously. it does help that she adores the concept of variety shows; getting paid to have fun? dream job. and that's why once the worry of being paired with someone she'd have no chemistry with melts away, she manages to take to the premise of the show like a fish in water. minus the flirting of course. to put it nicely; it's not a skill she's gotten much work out in.

seeing baekhyun laugh wholeheartedly makes the girl beam. another thing about variety is that it scratches her itch to make people around her joyous. making the type zero vocalist laugh like this feels her with a sense of accomplishment. milan bows from the waist in mock formality; "thank you, dearest guest" she replies to his promise to give her his best reaction. yes, variety is where she shines.

but baekhyun cannot be outdone himself and if he might take to variety with less ease, he has mastered the art of charm and, therefore, destabilizing her. now a little more comfortable, she can't help but release a soft "kyah!" before hiding her face behind her fingers, eyes peaking between her fingers at him, ears taking a more violent shade of red than ever. "no~" she denies his allegations of being endearing with the most aegyo filled no to exist. "i'm just... a silly goose!" she chuckles, half tempted to 'qwack' to dispell the fluttering of heart he's elliciting inside her. instead, she takes the conversation towards a different direction and confesses: "i've been a type zero fan for a long time, so i think i speak for all your fans right now. trust me." hands falling away from her face, she smiles.

as baekhyun talks about his worries, milan hums and aggrees with him as he goes on. "that's exactly how i was feeling!" the young woman tells him. "picture being paired with someone you are super close with and having to show a romantic side of yours?" she rubs her arms as if getting goosebumps just thinking about the scenario. her mind does drift to one person in particular and she wonders just what levels of awkward the two of them would reach if they ended up on a show like this together. probably would be the catalyst to a second friendpocalypse. "yep, nope!" she says out loud, clearly liking the idea less and less.

she giggles when he plays along with her, clearly happy that her partner isn't turned off by her nonsense. "i love this!" she exclaims when he decides on what to toast to, and after clinking her cup to his, she takes a long sip of her drink, eyes closing to enjoy the taste. definitely a drink made for her very own tastebuds.

"okay, now, onto serious things." he gestures towards the food. "the taste test! remember what i said earlier!" cheekily, she pokes her tongue out a little.

Un aspetto meno noto di Robert Frank impegnato in questo volume nella realizzazione di immagini “commerciali” per conto del marchio italiano Aspesi

Shirts, New York 1989 - Jackets Mabou, Nova Scotia 1995 - Collages, Zurich 1997

A beautifully designed collection of Robert Frank's subtle advertising images for the Milan-based clothing firm, Aspesi.

The catalog called Ideas was published in 1999 and it combines three of the campaigns including one of collages made in 1997. Where as the others were not publicly available, this one had a much larger printing and seemed made for more public consumption as a Robert Frank item of interest beyond the fashion aim.

The first section "Shirts" features photographs of shirt designs from Aspesi in 1989. Photographed in Polaroid positive/negative in the streets around his home near the Bowery he catches the models in states somewhere between posing and spontaneous interaction. The blurry urban backdrop and rough Polaroid edges provides a nice moody atmosphere of fashion meeting lower east side reality. 

The second section "Jackets" is a catalog of photographs of jackets offered from Aspesi's Fall/Winter line of 1995-96. This time around Robert has hauled everyone up to Mabou, Nova Scotia where jackets would be put to good use. Here he mixes the obvious models with locals and even June Leaf shows up in a few photos. Since much of Robert's "art" with the Polaroid has been done up in Mabou several elements within the landscape that he re-uses in these photos will be familiar. A local man in flannel jacket and trucker's cap holds up a piece of glass upon which Robert has etched the word 'Jackets' (scratched into the negative) while in the foreground the clothesline from his famous 'words' photograph now holds up jackets and not photographic prints blowing in the winter wind. In other photos he uses newspapers and people holding up found objects as props to infuse the pictures with the sense of an added beyond the clothing.

The third section "Collages" are the collages made in Zurich in which the featured products are light jackets. The collages include photographs in both black and white and color and other elements of film frames and scratched Polaroid negatives.
