“The Devil’s Machine” (2019)
Monday, February 1, 2021 (00:00) JEFELEN makes an annual habit of commencing each year by purposefully taking the first week off -- no business calls, no e-mails, no social media -- but for one reason or another, it has become painfully evident that for this year, that week of customary downtime has been inadvertently extended throughout the entirety of January!
As we subsequently enter into the month of February, then, this period of prolonged indolence must be brought to a decisive end... and so it is that I actively take this overdue opportunity to promote a project that actually saw the light of day back in 2019...
I was eminently grateful for the opportunity to serve as Associate Producer on "The Devil's Machine" (formerly "Automata"), for Scottish merchants of the macabre, Hex Studios™, produced in association with Dark Dunes™ and 7 Toes™. Written by Sarah Daly, and directed by Lawrie Brewster, the movie tells the chilling tale of an antiques expert who is sent to authenticate a 300-year-old clockwork doll with a notorious history, a tale told here in the truest gothic horror tradition. Featuring a haunting score provided by Thibaut Vuillermet, this is a motion picture experience that wholly concerns itself more with the building of unsettling mood than the delivery of cheap scares.

"The Devil's Machine" is being distributed by Blood House Films™, the genre horror-based label of Glass House Distribution™:

Thursday, February 11, 2021 (11:11) I hate to say it, but it's beginning to look as though February, for me, is at significant risk of following in January's torpid example, right at the moment... so here's an alternative trailer, shared in a concerted effort to circumvent further inactivity on my part, this time presented through Vimeo™:
http://player.vimeo.com/video/348949804?hd=1&rel=0...
Also presented here with the revised title.

Thursday, February 11, 2021 (12:21) Hmmm, while the indicated redirect itself works fine, the associated thumbnail for that embedded Vimeo™ video isn't displaying here for some unknown reason... so I've subsequently traced the same material via YouTube™, for the sake of visual registration:

Presented, this time, with BOTH titles (because that's not confusing at all, heh heh).

Monday, October 10, 2022 (22:22) 2022 UPDATE: for those who prefer to 'try before they buy', so to speak, "The Devil's Machine" is now available for free on the ad-supported Tubi™ streaming service:
http://tubitv.com/movies/530910/the-devil-s-machine
I also see that there's a second listing on this platform, which I can only presume has been made available to a contrary regional demographic, but this much I'm unable to personally verify from my present geographic location:
http://tubitv.com/movies/599979/the-devil-s-machine
Similarly, there is a listing to be found on Plex™:
http://watch.plex.tv/movie/the-devils-machine
But naturally, should you like what you see here, please do consider buying yourself the Hex Studios™ box set. #PhysicalMediaMatters
Tuesday, October 11, 2022 (02:20) REVISION: so it looks like all of the aforementioned DVDs have since SOLD OUT, so kindly disregard that last part. But do give "The Devil's Machine" a look, all the same, if gothic horror is of interest to you...
Thursday, March 21, 2024 (21:12) 2024 UPDATE: I'm pleased to announce that not only do Hex Studios™ have an all-new webstore, but it is once again stocked with "The Devil's Machine" DVD box sets:
http://www.hexstudios.shop/product-page/the-devil-s-machine
Interesting enough, Amazon.com also has the movie listed, courtesy of U.S. distributor, Echo Bridge™, which are available in the following formats:
DVD: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B083TMGNMC
Blu-ray: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B083TQ2M94
Personally, I'm not sold on the aesthetically non sequitur packaging, but that's neither here nor there -- you're free to purchase a copy, if you'd like. High Fliers™ also came onboard at one point as distributor for the U.K., but I think their discs may have SOLD OUT by this stage. Here is their marketing trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/embed/papc5YrjlsI?vq=hd720&rel=0...
Meanwhile, the movie can furthermore be found listed on the following streaming services:
Prime Video™: http://www.primevideo.com/detail/0NHJZJ7OZMFHGFCWOUPZ7UNQ6N
Apple TV™: http://tv.apple.com/movie/umc.cmc.79xwohb87ok7468yiwfgep9bx
Sky™: http://www.skystore.com/.../f911815d-0810-408c-849d...
To my knowledge, all other previously referenced outlets remain contemporarily relevant...

Remark Axleback Exhaust System For 2009-2020 Nissan 370Z
Nissan enthusiasts jumped for joy when the new Z33 350Z chassis was released after the Z badge was nearing 10-year hiatus. Cramming the new VQ platform in the engine bay, owners either hated or loved the engine. The VQ35 is notorious for sounding like a trombone after installing an exhaust and earned the title of the most annoying engine but proved to be a powerhouse.
Following the Z33 chassis came the Z34 370Z which featured the updated VQ37 3.7L V6 which fixed most of the issues from its predecessor. One thing that did not change was the annoying exhaust tone as a result of aftermarket exhausts. Being that the Z chassis is a performance-oriented vehicle, the exhaust actually flows a decent amount from the factory.
Remark engineered two options of axleback exhaust systems for the 370Z that open up the flow without making your car sound like you’re practicing for high school marching band. Version one of the series is a less restrictive and lightweight design that maximizes flow and allows the engine to scream without being overbearing. The second version is a more refined sounding system, yet still packs a punch.
Both systems consist of 2.5″ diameter T304 stainless steel tubing and 4.5″ tips to fill the arches in the rear bumper. For precision fitment each exhaust is mandrel-bent to ensure 100% fitment the first time. Featuring full TIG welds all the way around, the Remark axleback exhaust system is the perfect option for those looking for performance without being a burden.
Purchase Your Axleback Exhaust Here!
Features:
Constructed of mandrel-bent T304 stainless steel
Weight reduction compared to factory muffler system
Two versions available with polished or burnt tip options
Will NOT fit aftermarket exhaust systems
2.5″ diameter tubing

CM-390: CREATIVE MEDIA INTERNSHIP - UPDATE #6
It is Saturday, July 6th, and Tuned Originals Seattle at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA is TODAY from 4-10pm! Dylan and I are praying for a good weather and good turnout at the event. At this point, we are both beyond stressed, but we can’t let Wayne Raqueno down!
FEDEX KINKO’S
Before we head out to Evergreen Speedway for the event, we need to get a bunch of things printed out for the show, including the judging sheets and the car and spectator registration lists. Dylan and I actually tried to do this last night after departing the Tuned Originals Seattle Official Pre-Party at Sam’s Tavern, but were unsuccessful. We went to a FedEx Kinko’s last night in Bellevue, and waited for 30 minutes for the worker to come back from their break, but never returned. On the way up to Evergreen Speedway this morning, we were able to locate another FedEx Kinko’s in Woodinville that was open. $80 later, we were ready to head to the venue.
Total hours to complete: 0.5
ROLL-IN AND SETUP
Vehicle roll-in is between 11am and 3pm, but we notified Bruce Ching that we would be there an hour early to start prepping. I was in charge of car registration and check-in. Before any of the vehicles were allowed to enter the venue and placed in their positions, I would have to verify that they have previously registered. Anyone wishing to enter their cars the day of the show would have to pay $50, versus early registrants who received a discounted price. Up to that point, roll-in is relatively smooth with a few minor hiccups that we were able to workout with Bruce.
3pm is quickly approaching and there is no sign of Team F7LTHY, a car club from Vancouver, Canada, who we reserved VIP parking at the very beginning of the main entrance. It’s a prime area to be in because as soon as spectators walk into the venue, those cars would be the first ones they see. Dylan and I decided to reserve that area for Team F7LTHY because many of their cars have been highly modified, and the “Best of Show” winner will likely come from their team. I contact J.J. Dubec, who is the head guy at Team F7LTHY, and he says that they are running a little bit late, but they are on their way to the venue. I contact Bruce Ching and notify him that we will be extending the roll-in time to 4pm to accommodate Team F7LTHY. It is 3:20pm and Dylan is worried that Team F7LTHY will flake on our event, which means we would have to scramble to fill that front area with cars at the very last minute. I told Dylan to wait until 4pm because they will be here. It’s 3:30pm, and Team F7LTHY finally arrives, and we were able to get them all situated before the start of the show at 4pm.
Line of registered cars waiting to get inside the Evergreen Speedway.
Lawrence Ojas of Intec Racing and I checking to see how many more cars we can fit inside the venue.

TUNED ORIGINALS SEATTLE
The show officially started at 4pm. While Dylan is in charge of car judging, which will pretty much take the entire show until about 9pm, my job was pretty basic... Check up on everyone to make sure everything runs smoothly. Sounds simple enough, but this involves making sure no one starts or moves their vehicles during the show, checking up on our sponsors and vendors, dealing with any show-related issues that come up, and checking up on Bruce Ching once in awhile to make sure we are not running into any problems with the track. Luckily, only a few minor issues arise during the show that was quickly dealt with.
At the end of the night, Wayne normally presents the awards to all the winners. With Wayne not there, that job goes to either Dylan or I. Because he was the head judge, I suggested Dylan should be the one handing out the trophies. But for some reason or another, Dylan didn’t want to get up on stage, so that responsibility fell on me... And I’m glad it did! Seeing the happy faces of all the people who put so much hard work and hours into their cars to receive a couple pieces of laser engraved acrylic is rewarding and an honor in itself! I hope I did Wayne proud!
It’s a beautiful day for a car show at Evergreen Speedway.
Mallory Tatman’s 2011 Subaru WRX STi took home the “Best Subaru” and “Best Interior” trophies.
Team Notorious VQS is fully represented at Tuned Originals Seattle.
Gorman Eng of GT Entertainment and I got caught taking a break behind the model lounge.
J.J. Dubec’s 2017 Widebody Acura NSX of Team F7LTHY ended up winning the “Best of Show” award.
Dylan Ketrow and I waiting for the award ceremony to start.
Handing out the awards to all the winners was my favorite part of the day!
Total hours to complete: 6.0
ROLLOUT AND CLEANUP
Now that the award ceremony is complete, the show cars can finally rollout. Dylan and I are posted at the exit gate and waving goodbye to all the car owners as they depart as a way of thanking them for their support of our show. After all the vehicles have exited the track, Dylan and I have the daunting task of cleaning up. Fortunately, we have several volunteers that stuck around to help us out. We couldn’t leave until all the tables and chairs were stacked and put away, any large boxes broken down and properly disposed, and any large trash thrown away. After all of that was done, I call Bruce Ching to let him know that we completed all the tasks and we were ready to leave. Bruce reminds me that he will be having surgery on Monday, so he will not be able to attend our final meeting. Dylan and I finally leave Evergreen Speedway at 12:30am.
Total hours to complete: 2.5
BUSINESS MEETING/LUNCH AT DIN TAI FUNG IN BELLEVUE
It is Sunday, July 7th, the day after the show. It is tradition for Wayne Raqueno to treat some of our sponsors from the show to lunch or dinner as a way of thanking them for their support. I did not want to break tradition, so I invited some of our Seattle sponsors and spokesmodels for lunch at Din Tai Fung in Bellevue. Din Tai Fung has the best Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings). Although we enjoyed amazing food and even better company, this was also an excellent opportunity to get everyone’s input on how the show went and things to improve on next year. Before I could pay for the bill, Gorman Eng decides to front the bill again... That bastard!
Left to right: Tia Li, Gorman Eng, Kristina Chai, Dylan Ketrow, myself, Tamiko Lee, Paige Campbell, and BJ Ta.
Total hours to complete: 2.0
MEETING WITH DOUG HOBBS OF EVERGREEN SPEEDWAY
It is Monday, July 8th, and before departing Seattle, I meet up with Doug Hobbs, President and CEO of Evergreen Speedway to discuss the numbers and how the event did. Normally, this would be a private meeting between Doug Hobbs, Wayne Raqueno, and Bruce Ching, but Wayne is recovering in Dallas and Bruce is in surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Before the meeting concludes, Doug hands me a check for Tuned Originals portion of the ticket sales.
Total hours to complete: 0.5
INTERNSHIP HOURS SPENT: 17.5 | INTERNSHIP HOURS REMAINING: 9.0

Skyline 350GT - Short Test Drive via /r/cars
Skyline 350GT - Short Test Drive
Impressions The car looked good in white with a nice pearlescent look to it. It wore the factory forged Nissan wheels which suited the car well in my opinion.
Interior Seats were soft and supportive, the bolsters were quite nice and went up to the shoulders. The clutch pedal changed the sound of the idle when pushed, and in general felt a bit weird. Had a sort of squishy feel with different weighting throughout the actuation. The shifter was pretty bad in my opinion. It was sloppy and vague, and even when stationary left me guessing what gear I was in. The steering wheel was thinner than my 130i (maybe that’s a given, BMW are notorious for fat steering wheels). The interior trim was okay-ish, though the buttons still felt plasticky and not even on par with basic Volkswagens in my opinion. For a coupe I couldn’t get the seat to get low enough, so it felt like I sat above the car more than I’d like. The rear seats had enough legroom for me, but my long torso meant my head was angled against the rear windshield. I noticed the doors were massive, thick heavy bastards.
The Drive I remarked that the clutch felt much different to my car, and he’d said that I’d need to get used to it.Since the battery still wasn’t fully charged the salesperson half-jokingly said it’d be fine as long as I didn’t stall. We nervously laughed; “no pressure”. That resulted in me riding the clutch out a bit as we left the parking lot. Compared to my BMW the throttle was much more sensitive, but it still had a dead-region at the top of the travel. Once we got up to the first traffic light I was a bit alarmed to find out the brake pedal was incredibly mushy. I’d imagine it would be hard to heel-toe in this car because even in normal light braking my foot needed to plant the brake pedal much further than the level of the accelerator. The brake-feel didn’t give me much confidence at all.
Using the gear shifter continued to feel strange. I now knew it was vague, but when I went to shift there was a surprising amount of vibration and “feedback” in the shifter. Now I’m not sure whether people like “feedback” from a shifter but to me it was disconcerting. The car was completely stock and very quiet, which made rev matching a little hard even with the windows down.
The car felt very softly sprung, after a while I realised how little I felt in the way of potholes and road imperfections. Going around corners wasn’t the most connected experience, I could feel the weight of the car. I didn’t get to push the car much but from what I could tell it would make a great relaxed cruiser.
Visibility seemed alright, probably owing to the relatively high seating position. Rear visibility was slightly limited, compared to a hatchback I kind of expected this, but when I looked over my right shoulder (in a RHD car) my eyes fell on nothing but B-pillar. Looking out to the left was better though, since I could see though the little quarter window.
Once we’d gotten to a straight bit of road he gave me permission to let the car loose a bit. I drove the car up in second gear, and was met with a rough cacophony, like an old Ford taxi or something. Instead of feeling like a gradual build of excitement the noise it made gave me the impression that I should upshift just to stop the pain, it felt like it was hurting the car. The salesperson said that you couldn’t hear the exhaust note which contributed to the lack of tonality, but even the engine sounded ragged. I absolutely know for a fact that these VQ motors can sound heavenly, but in stock guise I can’t even hear the resemblance. The acceleration of the car was best described as “fine”. Compared to my 130i the engine has a bit more power but quite a bunch more torque, but honestly it didn’t feel that urgent or fast. I should probably have tempered my expectations but it didn’t feel much different to my car in terms of speed. Perhaps the gearing is longer, I’m not sure. We turned the car around at the next junction and headed back, doing the same acceleration run in the opposite direction. I tried revving the engine out more this time, but my impression hadn’t changed.
Conclusion You know how sometimes a person begins to look more physically attractive because you realised they have a great personality? When I got out of this car I just didn’t see the appeal anymore. In the US the car would be considered an Infiniti, as if it were some kind of step up from a standard Japanese car. To me though it still felt like just another Japanese car, and I don’t mean from the golden age of the 90s. I was hoping for tactility and character but unfortunately I didn’t find it. I’m sure this car would suit somebody looking for an effortless and comfortable cruiser, but at that point I’d just go for the automatic.
Back into my Car Hopping back into my car I felt the clutch pedal had a far smoother clutch action, with its biting point closer to the floor. The brakes were immediate, and the throttle was less touchy. The sound of the N52 motor feels much smoother and sounds sweeter to me. I’ve been making a concerted effort to find a direct replacement for my car, but I’m just drawing blanks. I guess the best result of an impulsive test drive is to prefer your current car anyway.
