Food Wastage: Public Enemy No. 1
I personally feel that It is time that we have a comprehensive “National Food Wastage Management Policy”, this is long overdue and needs our urgent attention. It’s disrespectful to our farmers, damaging for our economy.
A few things;
1- Imposing fines on the wastage of food, allowing restaurants to levy an extra charge on those customers who waste more food. All of us know someone who would always order more than they can ever eat, it has to stop. We can’t be doing it anymore.
2- A “food audit”, to see how much raw materials the hotels/restaurants bought, how many people they served, how much raw material they should’ve used to serve the same number & how much they threw away and making them accountable for overstocking.
3- Having food collected from restaurants, hotels, individual households by an integrated system, working with various delivery services providers, NGOs, govt bodies like the India Post etc and getting it at designated centres to be reprocessed or served at community kitchens.
4- Ensuring farmers don’t throw away perfectly fine vegetables just because market has them believe that only good looking veggies are useful, ensuring that farm produce can be sold from the farm & collected by the govt machinery from the farmer, ensuring no wastage at mandis etc
5- We must also discourage offers like “buy one get one” etc in food space and replace them with a general discount as the former would promote overstocking and purchase which is not needed.
6- A behavioural revolution is also needed with a lot of emphasis on the importance of not wasting food, to be taught at school, practiced at school and homes. We need people to understand that it is a serious issue which needs urgent attention.
We as a nation, must realise that it is time. Like we said yes to cleanliness, it’s time to say no to food wastage.

Farm Resources and Waste
• Farms use 80 % of our freshwater, yet 21% is lost to waste.
• Farms have access to 50 % of the land, yet 18% could be redistributed back because of lack of need. • Farmers use and require 19% of the nation’s fertilizer and 17.7% of the energy reserves, yet still, 20 billion pounds of food is wasted before it gets to our tables.
