Wanda Sykes Quits the Roseanne Reboot After Roseanne Barr's Racist Twitter Tirade
Roseanne might have shocked the TV world with its astounding ratings, but things have gone steeply downhill for the rebooted comedy ever since the March 27 premiere thanks to its star Roseanne Barr.
The 65-year-old actress, an outspoken Donald Trump supporter, has been spewing racist commentary and conservative conspiracy theories on Twitter over the last few years, and that didn't change despite the high-profile return of her '90s sitcom. Although the creative team behind the reboot - Barr, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, and Wanda Sykes, among others - promised that politics wouldn't dominate the storylines of the new season, a recent episode about the Conner family's Muslim neighbors drew ire from viewers. Now, a tweet from Barr herself seems to have been the cause of Roseanne's sudden cancellation as well as the reason behind why Sykes, a consulting producer, quit the show prior to the official cancellation announcement.
On May 29, Barr immediately came under fire after publishing a controversial tweet about Barack Obama's former White House adviser, Valerie Jarrett. "Muslim brotherhood & Planet of the Apes had a baby = vj," Barr wrote in the now-deleted tweet. According to The New York Times, Barr attempted to dismiss people calling her racist by saying that "ISLAM is not a RACE, lefties. Islam includes EVERY RACE of people." Shortly afterward, she tweeted an apology to Jarrett "and to all Americans."
I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.
- Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 29, 2018
Despite her apology, the damage had already been done. Sykes tweeted a few hours later that she would not be returning to Roseanne, and ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey released a statement announcing the cancellation of the reboot. "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values," she wrote. "We have decided to cancel her show." Roseanne aired its season finale on May 22 and was expected to return for a second season.
I will not be returning to @RoseanneOnABC.
- Wanda Sykes (@iamwandasykes) May 29, 2018
Since ABC's decision was made public, other actors have also denounced Barr's actions. Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene Conner on the series, called Barr's comments "abhorrent" on Twitter and promised that her opinions "do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show."
Avengers: Infinity War star Don Cheadle tweeted, "You can take @RoseanneOnABC out of racism but you can't take the racism out of @therealroseanne . . . ," and Patricia Arquette fired off a passionate tweet defending Jarrett. "I am repulsed that Valerie Jarret had that racist and bigoted 'joke' made at her expense," she wrote. "And I am sickened that any Black or Muslim person has to keep hearing this sickness in 2018."
ABC alum and wildly successful showrunner Shonda Rhimes also hopped on Twitter to share her perspective on the situation and summed things up perfectly. "Thank you, Channing #justice," she tweeted in reference to the network's decision to cancel Roseanne. "The terrible part is all of the talented innocent people who worked on that show now suffer because of this #notjustice . . . But honestly she got what she deserved. As I tell my 4 year old, one makes a choice with one's actions. Roseanne made a choice. A racist one. ABC made a choice. A human one."

TRIGGER WARNING: RAPE. I recently called my girlfriend's rapist out over Facebook directly, by name, and announced that we're taking legal action against her. Needless to say, she wasn't happy about my having done so, and we are currently being cyber-stalked as a result of it. For this reason, I've decided to have a little bit of courage, in order to make a PSA: Rape is fucking wrong, regardless of whether or not you consider yourself to be a morally righteous "social justice warrior." Yes, as a matter of fact, this rapist does consider herself to be an "SJW," and yes, she is a rapist, even by our country's less-than-victim-friendly legal standards (and especially by her own standards, which make it easier to call something rape.) I might even go so far as to say that she still considers herself involved with the social justice crowd after the rape, as absolutely hypocritical as that sounds. It's disgusting. I wish I were joking, but this rapist, whose name and further details shall be omitted, used to preach about solving the problem of rape as though she actually cared about it. She waved the banner of feminism high, and would go out of her way to make friends with people of all different shapes, sizes, religions and gender identities online in order to discuss topics of import to the SJW and LGBTQIA scenes in general (NOT necessarily here.) She was, no doubt, an active member of this community, and this is exactly my point: There are even rapists among the people who are involved with the SJW scene that are claiming to be against rape, and need to be watched out for. The goal of this post is to simply raise awareness that rape happens everywhere, and remind people to stay safe, as well as offer a listening ear to those who wish to tell their story. Rapists do exist among the social justice community, even among those who claim to be for the betterment of women and reform of rape laws, and at least one of them was looking to take advantage of people that would trust that she really believed in her ideals. As such, you should take the usual precautions when meeting SJWs as with anybody else.
I know that this should sound pretty obvious to those most concerned about rape, perhaps even unnecessary to some of them, but a PSA never hurt anybody, and if it helps somebody avoid a crisis like ours one day, I would be forever satisfied with my life. Besides that, this rapist had actually been a very close friend of ours for many years, and she certainly had us fooled about her values. I suppose it is true when they say that people can turn on a dime, under the right circumstances, so this is a message from the mouth of a victim's boyfriend that is intended to benefit everyone and remind everyone to stay safe. No matter how good a person appears on the surface, corruption runs deeper, and it can be hard to find in muddied waters.
Furthermore, I am opening up my inbox to private messages, in case this or something similar has happened to anyone else, and just feels like getting it off their chest, or perhaps having their story told to other people. Although I have only heard of similar cases a few times, I have a hypothesis that this sort of thing happens a bit more often than is really talked about; this is because it might be considerably easier to take somebody off-guard by telling them that you are an anti-rape activist, or by manipulating their desire to conform to an ideology. Rape happens in every community, and I would be glad to lend an ear to anybody that feels like telling their story. If this post becomes a popular thing with enough people wanting to talk to me about their personal experiences regarding rape in the SJW community, or share their stories with other people, I might consider publishing a blog in the future devoted to this topic, but I won't ever publish somebody's account if they do not wish for it.
