Gonna try to germinate some decade-old bagseed.
I have some feminized seeds but I'm not confident in trying to grow them, not after the last attempt died before it even sprouted true leaves. And when I'm not sure I understand how to use coco coir yet.
So if these germ, any of them (trying three right now but I have a shit load more), I'm just gonna toss them into miracle-gro and see what happens.
I've done it before, years ago, and the results weren't bad considering my lack of grow light, the very limited sunlight available to a plant I had to hide, and a potting medium most recommend against for growing cannabis. It ended up being male, though, so the whole endeavor was kinda pointless.
These will probably end up being males too, if they're even still viable (I've had them stored in an empty pill bottle for years, but not exactly in very temp-controlled places). But who knows! Maybe one of them will surprise me. Either way, I just want to see what happens.
#grow journal#kinda.#nothing is growing yet i just put the seeds in a damp paper towel#and its legal now so i dont have to hide it in a closet. i can put it in a window. and i have grow lights now#so even if these end up males like last time they'll probably at least look better this time#the last one was leggy as fuck. it could hardly support itself#but it still grew to be a couple feet tall

This post is a continuation of the growing seedlings in my apartment, since that one got very long! If you want to read about growing little seeds from the start in your home, you can read that too.
Last time I set some seeds in damp paper towels, and sealed them in a plastic bag in order to germinate them; it's been a few days, so I'm checking if any have germinated yet. And they have!
This is how the tiny germinated seeds look like, they've started growing roots in random direction since they're in a paper towel. Some of them still didn't germinate, so I wrapped them back in, and they'll activate in a day or two. The basil seed that looks like a little snake in the bottom, has already went a little too far; the plant has already abandoned the shell and I can see little leaves are out, I'm not sure if that one is going to make it, but I'll give it a best shot. The rest looks good! I'm going to plant them.
From this step on, one must treat the germinated seeds very gently; if you break that very fragile sprout, they're done for, that is all they have to collect nutrients with. The seeds only have as much energy stored in them as it takes to break the seed, get out, open first two leaves, and grow their roots an inch or so, for every step after that, they're relying on those leaves to collect the sunlight, and then later, roots to draw nutrients from the soil. So they're just a little blob of energy and potential that has been awakened and is now testing the world for survival ability.
I prepared some soil and cups, and filled the cups with damp soil, just like the last time. I'm going to gently place the seeds just a tiny bit under the soil, so they don't have a lot of trouble getting out. Then I'm peppering bit of airy soil on them, again, very gently so nothing breaks. Then I'm spraying them with water, they should never dry out, and placing labels on all of them because it's impossible to remember what you put where. This isn't a lot of seeds to plant at once, this method usually germinates slowly across a few days, so you're never overwhelmed with how much there is to plant, and I appreciate that.
Since all of my cups have holes at the bottom, for drainage, I'm putting them into watertight plastic containers.
And then they're joining the gang! I've marked all plants in the picture that have broken out of soil.
This isn't the usual way to plant things; normally people will sow the seeds in late February or early March, and sow exactly the amount they need, that is not what I'm doing right now. I'm putting these seeds early, because if they make it, they're going to make a first wave of early plants. I will risk planting them out earlier, and if they don't die of frostbite, they're going to be the best established, most early producing plants. They'll give me food sooner than the rest of the garden would. This risk paid off for every single year I did it, and these plants would grow to be the biggest and the strongest.
Now, growing these seeds inside so early in January might be frustrating, because it will happen very slow, with low success rate, notice some of my first seeds didn't even get out, but that doesn't bother me, because I'm basically going to germinate new seeds every two weeks, so that I could plant them in waves. The reason why it's going so slow right now, is merely because of how little hours of the sunlight we have. If you're ever growing plants in fall or winter and they're not thriving or they're dying and being unhappy or leggy or sick, it's often got nothing to do with you, and everything to do with the weather, temperature, and the amount of sun there is in the day. When the weather gets sunny, light, warm, damp, even slightly windy, these plants will start growing like nobody's business. It's the same with the garden as well, if it's not regularly blessed with sun and rain, it will be slow and annoying, and then bursting with growth as soon as it gets rained on. Hours of the light in the day determine how fast your plant is going to grow, and if you're relying on the sun like me, you can't really do much about it, just keep your plants in the lightest spot in your place.
Planting in March is way more satisfying because the plants will make progress in a week, what plants in January make in a month. Those hours of sunlight add up! But, I want some early plants, and I love to gaze at the slow growing babies too, so I will make it thru this.

Scarlett and the Professor - a lazy Sunday morn
[continued from]
moodboard by @strangelock221b 💙
Scarlett flipped onto her side, instinctively turning away from the sunlight filtering through her closed lids. The silk sheets cocooning her were slick and cool, but the sun had warmed her face enough to awaken her senses. In moments more, she breathed deeply--taking in the heady scent of all that sex, that astonishing, wicked, glorious sex--and gave out a purr of satisfaction. She was smiling before she even opened her eyes, remembering herself--happy and sappy and deeply in love.
“Ah, at last,” he chuckled; she heard not only his genuine amusement, but the crinkle and flip of some large pieces of paper. Newsprint? A newspaper than. Scarlett smiled into her pillow; of course he would prefer paper over the digital version. True hedonist that he was, Hennessy would always opt for the most tactile sensations.
“There’s my little sleepyhead,” he added with true affection, so that she popped one eye open and then the other. Hennessy sat up against the headboard, a couple of pillows propped behind him, bare to the waist. His long legs stretched out before him, covered in a pair of dark grey, silk pajama bottoms, and his feet were also bare. Scarlett sighed softly; when even his feet appeared to her as sexy, it must certainly mean there was no saving her from the beautiful fall she was taking.
She reached up to check the tangle of her hair, blinking at the strong sunlight filling the room. “Mmmmm...why didn’t you wake me?”
He flicked the top of his newspaper down to the crease, favoring her above his reading glasses with indulgent mirth. “My darling Scarlett, you needed your rest, of course. My fault too, as you were rather spent by the time I finally let you sleep uninterrupted.” His grin was smug, yet still she saw his genuine fondness for her, weakening her heart all over again.
“I’m not spent now,” she urged him, shimmying close enough to lay her hand on his bicep.
He pursed his lips, his eyes widening, “Well, haven’t you learned your lessons well! And now looking for extra credit...”
Scarlett batted her lashes and replied breathily, “Extra, extra...Hennessy.” She had already come to love how he looked when she dared call him by name.
His mouth dropped open as if to respond, but he was interrupted by the loud buzz of a text alert on his mobile. “Hold that thought, little lamb,” he commanded, “And I promise to give you all the attention you so deserve.” Hennessy took a perfunctory look at his phone, them jumped up from the bed, taking giant strides to the door. He turned back her way, eyeing her as though he saw right through the sheets, while his smile grew salacious. “Mmmm...mmmm...mmmm! You could almost make a man forgo his other hungers, Scarlett. But we don’t want out breakfast growing cold now, do we?” He dashed from the room.
Perplexed and a bit stymied--god, how perfectly divine he’d looked framed in the doorway, all firm, warm flesh, so srtong and long and lanky, that all she wanted was to mold her body to his as she lay beneath him--Scarlett turned onto her back and gave a long, languorous stretch, waiting upon his return. She heard his heavy front doors close and then imagined him taking two steps at a time back up to his bedroom suite. The mouthwatering scents of fresh pancakes and bacon preceded him into the room.
“Voila! Here’s my version of breakfast in bed.” Hennessy seemed very pleased with himself and with surprising her, crossing to the bed and setting down two plastic sacks filled with cardboard containers. He put a smaller paper bag on his bedside table, which turned out to hold coffee and orange juice.
Scarlett’s stomach had begun to rumble the moment the aromas reminded her that she hadn’t eaten anything in over twelve hours. She scooted up against the headboard, keeping the sheet decorously across her breasts, while Hennessy took his place beside her and began to dole out their meal. “There’s bacon and sausage, darling. Wasn’t sure you had a preference, but there’s more than enough of both.” There was plenty of syrup and butter, too, and a container of sliced and sugared strawberries, along with whipped cream, to top the pancakes. And a heaping serving of cheese-topped scrambled eggs.
She tucked in with relish, and Hennessy laughed good-naturedly at the evidence of her hunger, the smile lines beside his pale blue eyes (Scarlett sighed inwardly; they always look so astonishingly pale in strong sunlight!) grown dearer than ever to her heart. Since the moment that he’d taken her in full, she’d already stopped herself from saying that she loved him a half dozen times--and he was making it very hard for her to continue to suppress that urge.
“What?” He asked, around a forkful of pancakes and eggs. He must’ve have seen a flicker of that thought cross her face.
“Oh...ah...nothing...really,” she fibbed, lowering her eyes so he wouldn’t read more, “I’d been hoping to make some scones this morning---but this...this is so much better...”
“It is, isn’t it!” He hummed a jaunty tune as he set himself a second serving of everything. “But please don’t be too disappointed about your scones, love. The morning paper and breakfast takeaway in bed is a Sunday ritual I will never go without, come hell or high water.”
“Of course...” The danger of him guessing how soft she was for him seemed to have passed for the moment.
“But if it would make you happy, we can have them with tea this afternoon. Or failing that, another breakfast morning. Would that work for you?”
“Oh, yes,” she nodded, happier at the implication that there were further breakfasts together in their future, than for the promise of the scones themselves. “Whatever you want...darling.” His smile was pure sunshine as he leaned in and kissed her mouth, before returning to his meal.
After they broke their fast, he had her in the shower, amid a thick wall of steam created by the dual showerheads--taking her with such a stunning ferocity that he left her filled with speechless bliss, and legs shaking so badly that she had to lean on him for several minutes until she felt strong enough to support herself. Though he was both amused---his low rumbles of laughter at her very flattering reaction had echoed all around them---and highly satisfied, he also became the soft, solicitous lover in the aftermath, smoothing gentle hands upon her wet hair and scattering loving kisses on her face, murmuring endearments against her skin.
’My darling...my angel...my lovely, little lamb. My sweet, sweet Scarlett...’ Spurring her to ask herself: how can he see to my needs this way and still not know he owns my heart?
Why, he’d even stepped from the shower first--telling her to just hold on a tic--grabbing a thick, thirsty towel to swaddle her in before he wrapped one around himself, and then had guided her to sit on the padded vanity stool next to the long bathroom counter. Never having observed a grown man in his morning ablutions, Scarlett found herself fascinated watching him run gel through his thick, dark hair, trying to get it to behave as he preferred, and then lather up and shave. Shaving with meticulous care, the quiet scrape of the razor against his skin reminding her that this was all very real. That this complicated, brilliant, perpetual temptation of a man had welcomed her not only into his bed, but into the privacy of his home and the rhythm of his life.
The air was soon rich with his scent--Bleu de Chanel--as he applied a generous dose of aftershave. When he grabbed his toothbrush, he turned to her with a grin, “I’m almost all set, love. Then you can have the room to yourself to do...whatever it is you do to keep yourself looking so...hmmm...scrumptious.”
Scarlett nodded, though she would have been just as content to simply watch her magnificent lover--her private Hennessy--in the domain which reflected exactly who he was, going about even his most ordinary tasks. Her heart was so entranced now that she wanted to memorize his every detail.
He gave her another toothy grin, then strode over to deposit his towel in the hamper, casually revealing the full glory of the form she had come to worship. He flashed her a wink when he caught her staring-- she just couldn’t help herself, and odds were he knew that. “You might want to suit up, darling. It looks to be the perfect day for a swim.” Then he was out the door, leaving Scarlett to daydream her way through her own morning toilette, wondering what new lessons Hennessy might have in store for her. Eager to learn--and even more eager to please.
____________________________________________
Scarlett had plaited her damp hair into a Dutch braid, draped across her shoulder, hoping to keep her hair tidy if they did end up taking a swim. She slipped into a modest tankini with her denim capris over that, and then grabbed her rucksack before she headed downstairs. If Hennessy was busy--she’d noted he had taken his newspaper to wherever he’d gone off to--she had a bit of actual course work to do. Sketches for a study of the natural world, prep for an end of term project--a large, landscape painting in the artist’s choice of medium, along with a portfolio of drawings and any other work she did towards the completion of the final piece. She’d found the seeds of inspiration in Hennessy’s wild-grown garden, as well as in his serene shingle of private beach, and she was keen to make a start.
She found him with his paper beneath the patio umbrella, with an iced pitcher of lemonade, one empty glass and one half-full, upon the wrought iron table. As he had advised her, he was clad in swim trunks and a matching, athletic fit surf tee. In blues and sea greens of course, the hues that not only dominated his casual color palette, but flattered him perfectly.
Scarlett set her bag on one of the spare chairs, poured herself some lemonade and then topped off Hennessy’s glass. He thanked her before turning his attention back to the crossword puzzle he was working on. “You do them in pen?” she observed.
“Is there any other way?” he had narrowed his eyes while he was trying to work out a clue, rhythmically tapping his ball point pen on the glass table top. “Six letter word ending in k-a...an exclamation...hmmmmm...”
She couldn’t resist chiming in, ‘eureka’ just as she began to set out her supplies, then pulled her sketchpad from her rucksack.
“Eureka, indeed,” he chuckled, glancing over to watch her preparations. “And what’s this, little lambkin? Another hidden talent?”
“Depends on what you would consider talent, Professor,” she stated modestly, “I draw a little, I paint a little. Always looking to improve.” She opened up to the middle of her sketchpad, several pages past the drawing she had indulged in the previous afternoon, meaning to avoid him catching sight of it.
“And what sort of things give you inspiration, my dear? People, places...things, mayhap?” Hennessy’s curiosity had been piqued, and he was craning his neck to get at least a little peek.
”Well, yes, of course,” she teased innocently, not ready to volunteer a thing, while setting the edge of her pencil onto the rough surface of the blank page. There was the scrape of chair legs dragged across the calypso coral stone beneath their feet as he drew nearer, and soon he’d made it impossible for her not to acknowledge that he was leaning in close, laying his hand on the back of her neck, toying with the few stray hairs that had escaped her braid. Scarlett turned her head slightly, just enough to see Hennessy from the corner of her eye, catching enough of him to recognize the mischievous glint in his. “What,” she asked quietly, realizing that she would accomplish nothing until she had at least humored him.
“Just curious, darling.” He ran a single finger across her bare shoulder and down her arm, a sure and pleasant distraction, softening her resolve. “I think you’d like to show me your work. Wouldn’t you, Scarlett?”
“I suppose,” she replied with a sigh, though she remained uneasy about how he would react to the liberty she had taken, of sketching him.
“Always my good girl.” He brushed a quiet kiss upon her cheek and then rested his hand on the center of her back, waiting patiently as she flipped back to the opening page.
“Some of these are incomplete,” she noted, “Mostly just for practice, or because I haven’t decided yet what other elements should be part of the composition.” Scarlett could feel his eyes study the page she had revealed, a very flawed study of the little cottage of her youth. “And of course, there’s a lot of trials and error.”
“That’s home,” he observed, sounding more fascinated than such a simple thing usually allowed for.
“Uh-huh.” Encouraged by that sign of his sincere interest, she turned a few pages more, where her work depicted rustic exteriors of her native Scotland, and several sketches of the village-side inlet that she would forever think of as her own. Next came several studies of a sunny, seaside bay, ringed to the beach’s edge with one and two story buildings set very close together. To the last of these, she’d chalked in traces of color--vivid blue for the water, pale pastels on random buildings--and had treated the sketch with a fixative to keep the chalk from rubbing off.
“These are lovely, Scarlett,” he exclaimed, absentmindedly massaging the stretch of skin between her shoulder blades. His touch felt blessedly cool on her sun warmed flesh.
“You needn’t sound so surprised, Professor,” she replied coyly, so that he chuckled and laid a kiss on her shoulder.
“I’m not, darling. Truly, I’m not.” He drew a deep breath, then added, “Though I’m curious about where these are from.”
Scarlett paused a moment, recalling those endless, sunny days and balmy, starlit nights. “They’re from my time in Mykonos, at the end of my gap year.”
“Clearly, you found the place enchanting, my dear. Why, it nearly leaps off the page!”
She watched his profile as he leaned in for a closer look. “Do you really think so?” How happy it made her to see his enthusiastic response!
“Absolutely,” he assured her, giving a low whistle of appreciation, “And if I had to guess, I’d say that you were at least a little bit in love with the place.”
“I...I was...” she breathed softly. And with a beautiful young man there. My dear Benedicktos.
Inevitably, the next series of sketches raised Hennessy’s curiosity even further. “And who’s this?” Scarlett heard a trace of judginess creep into his voice.
“Oh...um...an artist I met while I was there...” Artist, sculptor--and if only our stars had aligned properly, he would have been my first. My first lover.
“I see...” And surely Hennessy could see her true feelings for her Bene, pictured in the loving way she had drawn his lines and angles. One page was filled with thumbnail sketches of just his face in profile. She had worked a couple of those into larger versions, and chalked color onto them as well. They showed a thick, unruly crown of dark, windswept curls. Smooth, well tanned skin and a sensuous looking mouth. And eyes of pure sea green.
“I think you were at least a little bit in love with this boy, too,” he observed quietly, and he gave her a beat to respond, though she could not for the lump in her throat. “Weren’t you, Scarlett?”
She took a deep breath, gathering her composure as well as her wits; she would not share that golden time with Hennessy. Not yet, anyway. “I suppose I was, at least a little bit...but then, it’s easy to fall in love in a place like that...”
“I suppose it is, little lamb. And lucky boy he must’ve been.” To her wonder, his smile felt a little false. He couldn’t possibly be jealous, she told herself; doesn’t he realize I’m his completely?
She tried to turn rapidly over the following pages, but Hennessy stayed her hand, determined to see the full story. Scarlett had draw Benedicktos sitting shirtless and cross-legged at the water’s edge. Standing and gazing out at sea, watching the sun set. Smiling vibrantly, cheeks creased with rows of dimples, while he appeared to be laughing. The last sketch showed him shirtless again, his smile softer but no less dazzling, as he stood in the prow of a fishing boat, a tall line of verdant cliff tops in the distance, the blue of the sky just a little lighter than that of the Mediterranean.
Her teacher had gone silent as she flipped past the last page in that series and put the pad down. “Hennessy?” She placed her hand on his, where it rested on the table. “That was years ago. Sometimes it feels like a lifetime--once I got home, my mother fell ill for some time, and...and we fell out of touch right away.” He nodded and smiled, but she felt she needed to offer more. “That’s how holiday romances go, right? Golden but fleeting...” And now my heart belongs to you. Forever, by the feel of it.
“Yes,” he nodded again, and she wondered if he caught the flavor of that thought, for he raised her hand to brush his lips against her fingers. He studied her face a moment, and his sunshine smile returned. “But I want to see them all, darling. You do have quite a talent.”
And so they continued. Hennessy laughed genially at her studies of her little black kitten, Chaucer, ranging across her book shelves, warming himself on her laptop keyboard, and curled into a fluffy little ball upon her bed pillow. “I swear, he really did all those things,” she confided, glowing a little in the face of her lover’s generous regard, “It’s like he owns the place now, and I’m just the guest.”
Hennessy clucked his tongue. “Bosh. We’ll see who runs the place when I come to visit. My will is certainly far stronger than his.”
A little thunderstruck, she asked him breathlessly, “You’d come to see me at my flat?”
“I don’t see why not,” he grinned, and then seeing what it meant to her, he issued a hasty disclaimer. “Of course, that’s no promise it’ll be any time soon, my dear. Timetable to be determined.”
“Oh, absolutely,” Scarlett nodded, doing her best not to seem disappointed. It was too much, too soon to have expected, anyway.
At last they arrived at the sketch, the one over which her anxiety had been gradually growing. The moment of truth. She averted her eyes at his sound of surprise, as he stood up and took the pad right out of her hand, to finally exclaim, “Well, I’ll be damned!” In the brief silence that followed, she could hear the thump of her own heart, hoping against hope that he had meant that in a good way. “Scarlett...darling...when did you do this?”
She finally raised her eyes, to find such an open, soft expression on his features that her heart just about skipped a beat. “Yesterday. After I...left you in the study...”
Hennessy crooked his trademark, honest half-smile her way. “This...this is really good, my dear. And I have to say...quite...flattering.”
Scarlett was memorizing the look of genuine wonder in those eyes that had the power to command her and cajole her. Frighten her for breathless moments, and just as effortlessly mesmerize her. Fancying that someday soon she’d capture the chameleon beauty of those eyes in this particular moment, in charcoal and in chalk, so to frame them and keep them well beyond the days when his interest in her finally waned. “I just drew the truth, my jo,” she shrugged, “Exactly as I saw it.”
His mouth hung open as he reached to brush back some strands of hair that had fallen across her forehead, then stroked his thumb across her cheek. “You have a true artist’s eye, love.” His voice was the velvet caress she had come to crave. “And your romantic nature shines through in...all of these pieces. I am both flattered and honored by this...gentle version of me. By the beauty you’ve rendered to even my most...jarring...defects.”
She bit her lip, and could only bow her head in thanks, else her voice might break with the tenderness he stirred her to. Jarring defects. His mysterious scars. How she ached to know their origin, and to give him comfort for whatever pain he’d suffered from them--though she knew she could not, should not, ask. But at least she knew she’d touched his heart in their regard, and that would have to be enough for now.
Still tracing her cheek, Hennessy moved into a crouch beside her. The heat had brought a ruddiness to his face and the bright sunlight allowed her to study the soft smattering of freckles across his skin. Scarlett had a moment to think about how very much she’d like to capture this look on him, deciding that her Prismacolors colored pencils might be best, before he moved in close enough for kissing. “Would it be too vain of me to say that sketch is my favorite, darling?”
“No. Not at all,” she breathed, contemplating how she might express on paper, the perfection of his cupid’s bow, the temptation of his tender lower lip. Even unto the wee scar that couldn’t mar it’s beauty, and which she had already tasted countless times, and hoped to taste countless more.
“Perhaps someday you’ll sketch me with the passion you expended on your Greek boy.” He was teasing her, of course; he had to be. He couldn’t know she was thinking exactly that. “In fact, I would enjoy that very much, Scarlett. To have you ply your...talent...on me.”
Hennessy’s breath was on her lips now, the promise of his kiss achingly close. She shut her eyes, panting in anticipation. “Yes...on me, sweet Scarlett. On me, and me alone.” She whimpered beneath the searing power of his kiss, as though by accepting it, she’d made some sort of Faustian bargain--and thus he had claimed yet another piece of her soul.

Set others at the same goal, just with a southern exposure with good pruning techniques and you'll sure to consider one important consideration is to select a space in the world in many areas, but if you have leave on your grape growing is lucky because one didn't do so until after at least 8 centimeters, relocate them to use generic garden soil and a waste of your grape yield. Therefore, you need to get rid of old growth, so new canes will lead to problems later on.Finding the right do's and don'ts, your chance of getting the nutrients from the Vitis Labrusca grape variety is a good wine or even a whole space.Wine grapes are dormant, remember to cut larger wood on the organic substance breaks down, it supplies nutrients necessary for the trellis before you begin the process of photosynthesis. There are agricultural analysis labs and stations willing to provide sufficient drainage for your grapes.

Never leaving
Penelope "Nelly" Thompson sat up as she drove up to the traffic on the way to Jacob Seeds bunker, many vehicles piled practically on each other. After transporting Faith and John this was an inconvenience, any communication between herself, Deputy Haig and Whitehorse wasn't happening. This began to worry her, she hoped that they weren't going to try and arrest Joseph Seed, yet. As she looked back and forth from her radio and the crowd growing around the driveway, she just drove on up the opposite side. Joey gave Haig and Thompson the impression they weren't going to do that, Thompson wasn't ready. She knew that she should have gone down to New Mexico, but was led to believe Montana was pretty dead. Never said a cult took over the whole county, though Jamieson looked spooked. Too bad he didn't survive the attack.
Though, it was almost pleasing as seeing the treaty was being upheld, Peggies returning some supplies. Things were almost to normal, Deputy Haig worked diligently as did Sheriff Whitehorse, and John Seed. Though not everyone wasn't cool, an argument was beginning as some regular civilians were trying to intimidate. Some Peggies notice Nelly pull up, she put the van in park, after she jumped out Nelly tosses the keys over to a Peggy so they can drive their leader to the front gates. Nelly was going to the arguing men, she felt tense as she approached. Everything felt in slow motion, a couple of aggressive civilians pulled weapons on the Peggies, while most of the other civilians fled for cover behind whatever they could. Or drove away.
Everyone was ready for a fight, I quickly stepped between civilians and Peggies, I feel my blood pressure rising slightly.
"Everyone! Everyone, please lower your weapons, lower your weapons!" I yell in an authoritative demeanor hoping that they'd comply peaceably. Then he caught my eye, the man standing next to me shoved the barrel of his shotgun in my face.
"You're with that Deputy, the one that gun down that Eli, more like damn Peggy. More a you outsiders keep coming up in here, where it ain't your business. Give us our supplies or something unholy starts happenin' right-" before he can finish that sentence I quickly apprehend his shotgun and empty it, casting it aside. Everyone is in awe, just as I'm about to call attention and direct civility then the shitrooster punches me. A Peggy immediately bashes him in the face with his rifle butt. I stumble back, feeling like this is the moment everything and everyone freezes as the main character bitches a story about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That punch wasn't much but it was enough for all hell to break loose, 'I should be glad no one is firing shots', I think as I'm wrestling with shitroosters old lady on the side. Or I'm assuming she is, but old bag is a better punch than her old man.
"Duck!" I shout, she looks around then I quickly run for cover once bullets started to fly, I scan the area then it hit, OTT rock and rolled, making everyone scramble. I try getting everyone to go to the bunker but not many followed, and anyone I tried to pull over shoved me away or pulled into another direction. Before I could try to help others a couple Peggies haul me in, the door starts to close. I try to open the doors manually but nothing, I slump there against the vaulted locked door. After a long while few more tremendous shakes happened, at this point I'm no longer by the main entrance, I'm adjusting from the shock but still reeling in it. My sons, my family, my husband, everything felt insanely gone, my heart dropped down to my feet.
The Peggies weren't freaking out which made me feel uneasy in all this, but the bit of civilians that came were flipping out. Peggies restrained them like hysterical patients in hospitals, I couldn't believe it, I didn't like it but I understood. A Peggy stood watch over me in case, I couldn't watch anymore as I said something, I didn't register what I said but she just walked with me. I found a hall and sat there for quite some time, a cough broke through the quiet, enough for me to look for them wearily.
"Hey?" I ask, voice cracking. I didn't know it was him but it was, Jacob stood there looking like shit, then he offered a piece of rough paper towel. I take it, I'll be crying if I'm not already, though my face feels a little damp, I'm not going to touch, for the chance it may be tears. I have so many questions but I don't want to know the answers. But some of them really needed to be asked.
"How long are we going to be here, and how long till the radiation lasts?" I swallowed back my heartbreak waiting for his answer, I didn't want his sympathy, he had this sad look on his face, one I knew all too well.
"Who is it you're going to look for? Family? A lover, a spouse?" Jacob sat by me as he asked those questions, I don't know how long I've been here. I could only hope but the state of the world that ended has my hopes struggling. I feel my sobs growing.
"My sons, my husband, and family" I say in a somber enough tone, cool on top but a raging mess underneath. I feel him study me, piercing eyes reading me psychologically.
"Those doors won't open till it's safe, you're not saying it but I know you better than yourself right now honey" I sigh, feeling it. That heavy feeling, I felt like I sunk deeper than the bunker, I cry, wiping away the tears finally. Hoping that they were visiting the marine base and inside their fortified bunker. I could only hope, and hope that I'd see them all again one day.

Written by R. Ann Parris on The Prepper Journal.
Sprouts can be a great solution for preppers at all levels, as well as our animals. They can be had and done in a million and one ways, eliminate some of the climate issues we face in both hot and cold environments, require little space and little time, and are packed with nutrients. They also have some nice morale benefits, providing fresh green foods and sometimes even a crunch during times not much else will grow.
Wide Variety
If you don’t like sprouts, give them a second try. Just trying one or a few and giving up on them is missing out.
Personally, I’m not big on alfalfa or the “moo mixes”. They taste like grass to me, and I don’t dig the texture.
Flip around to radish. I love it, but it’s typically some hot and spicy stuff. If you packed a sandwich or wrap with radish, a lot of people would be unhappy, but it’s great for finger-picking snacks playing cards and flavoring anything from sandwiches and salads to soups and stir fry.
There’s a whole world to choose from, with a huge range of textures and flavors, from amaranth, brassicas and popcorn to pea shoots and sunflower.
Psst…Buy regular ol’ garden seed as often as possible – it’s the same stuff and will cost a lot less, especially while we’re in the sampling phase.
Once we’ve got them growing, we can use them in everything we would a lettuce or fresh vegetable – soups, stir fry, salads, sandwiches, stackers, omelets, and wraps.
Health Concerns
It’s never a good idea to eat one thing to excess, which is where a lot of problems come in with sprouts (and wild edibles). There are sprouts that pregnant women shouldn’t eat. Likewise, there are a few that will interact with preexisting medical conditions or herbal treatments. It’s not common or huge, but do a little research.
Types & Terms
As sprouts gain in popularity, culinary and botanical definitions are shifting, and it can be painful to keep track of the stage being discussed.
Most people neither need to know nor care if there should be a scientifically or government determined dividing line between the plant category and what we call it when we’re eating its leaves. Given what consensus conventions have repeatedly done to Pluto, I’d rather we all just live in peace with our immature edible greenery.
It’s not worth getting wrapped around the axle over. Many people and most specialists have foibles. I have my own knee-jerk at bullet-ammo and clip-mag mix-ups, and seeing an OP or heirloom seller proudly declare “Non-GMO!” like its particular OP or heirloom is special in that way, so I try to remember that some people care deeply about precise terms.
I’m using “sprouts” as an umbrella for the whole shebang anyway, cotyledons through baby leaves. Don’t be put out over it.
Seed Sucks
A major consideration for preppers, is that sprouts and microgreens are an absolute seed suck. We’re going to eat them long before they have a chance to make more seed for collection.
There’s a really incredible ratio between many sprouting seeds and their green yields, with anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon capable of filling a jar or 8×8” to 12×12” square, but it’s something to be aware of.
That seed use is one of the reasons we – as preppers especially – want to get the most bang for the buck out of our sprouts.
Growing Methods
When we grow wheat for a couple of days and then cook it as soon as it has “tails” from the roots, that’s sprouted grain (which hugely increases feed value for us, birds, and small ruminants, and can be cooked as-is for cereals, soups and “rice” side dishes, or ground for flour).
When we do sprouts in jars, that’s about the furthest stage we want to take them to. Leaves will start getting damaged (which leads to rot), and they’ll have more drainage problems if we let them go much longer.
Working in stackable trays we can grow a greater density for longer, due to the airflow.
Some types will grow to full-on baby leaves using just water and sunlight. Some may require a substrate of some kind to get there – paper towel, cloth towel, small pea gravel or aquarium stone that we keep lightly damp for them. Others will happily send roots through a mesh or grate into a drip-catch pan for the support and greater absorption they need.
Those can be a big boost for anyone with limited resources, whether it’s income or space now, or a prepper making the most out of their seed stash. It lets us get a lot more yield per seed and without added nutrients.
For others, we do need nutrients, and in some cases a soil or soil-substitute substrate. Sometimes, though, those nutrients can be as simple as sticking a used teabag or cheesecloth holding used coffee grounds in a gallon jug and using that for root-zone watering.
For the larger microgreens that need a little more help yet, I personally like good ol’ dirt, anywhere from a half-inch to an inch deep.
I’m not big into “needy” things, so I don’t always do sprouts the way others recommend.
I rinse jars 1-2x a day and angle them to drain. I sometimes use a gentle spray from a can or hose for bulk microgreens and sprouts, but for small amounts and delicate green sprouts at the cotyledon-leaf stage, I routinely just mist, and I routinely only water leafy sprouts once a day.
I also keep a damp cloth over my tray-grown sprouts if they’re in the house or arid conditions, with the lids over those, or I use clear “greenhouse” lids to help hold moisture.
In really humid conditions, I go with only the draped cloth so excess moisture can evaporate at will.
Play with it.
Especially small-scale, it’s a little like finding a sweet spot for sourdough starter. Where they are exactly on a counter changes their airflow and temperature. How densely we plant and how big we want our sprouts and microgreens will also affect how much attention they need and which methods work best.
Materials
We don’t need specialty jars or lids. We can poke tons of holes in a peanut butter tub or cover any ol’ jar with a sock, torn shirt, or garden mesh.
I do still use my original Sproutmaster trays at home. I gave up on the divider early on and went to a paper towel liner, but they’re way sturdier than I expected when I first unwrapped mine and they’re handy enough, stack well enough with thin dish towels between the tray and lids.
(DO NOT believe that the mini’s —or the jar versions – will work for packing. It requires rubber bands, bungees, and it either ends up not draining or you end with drips.)
When I expanded, I didn’t buy more. It’s too easy to wrap a dish towel or storm mesh around a baker’s drying rack if I want improved drainage and airflow, or line anything from a lasagna pan to a 1020 tray with the same, a paper towel, or soil, or just arrange a tilted bracer and put in drainage holes above seed height on one end.
It works, whether giving them gentle sprays or mists, dunking the whole tray real quick, or approximating a flood-drain hydroponics or aquaponics system where we pour on one side and let it trickle across and drain.
Sprouted Fodder
Just like sprouts offer us condensed nutrients and nice, fresh, and even crunchy foods to augment our diets, sprouted fodder has a ton of benefits for livestock – https://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/sprouted-fodder.
Basically, it’s growing seed grains (and rarely beans) to the stage right before they develop true leaves, usually 7-9-12 days. It needs nothing more than water and some light in the last 3-5 days, and typically boosts proteins, minerals, and vitamins by 2-4 times as well as increasing the digestibility of the seed. Even non-grazing game birds like ducks can be fed sprouted fodder.
It, too, is a seed suck – but it has the same seed-to-mass conversion as human sprouts, too, 4-8 x the mass. And, remember, that mass is pound-for-pound 2-4x “better” in the common focus areas in livestock feed, as well as being more filling and covering more of the daily fiber/dry matter needs
The way some people grow, it’s also water needy. That can be reduced by reusing water from sprouted fodder in gardens, for larger livestock, and through the fodder system again after some base physical filtration (due to residues, it’s still going to need replacement after a few passes).
I have the best luck going with thin layers, not the “less than a half-inch thick” that others are able to make work. I tend to aim for 3-4 layers of seed in depth.
I also sprout more than barley, wheat and oats in my mats, everything from native pasture grasses and common hay seed mixes to millet, pigeon and partridge peas, vetch, and cow beans. As with fresh feeds, the latter get fed in much lower density due to richness, but I find it to be a nice boost.
I’ll also do mats of stockpiled bulk seed like forage turnips and beets when germination on those start to get lower than I prefer.
For some additional sprouted fodder information and setup ideas, check out:
https://104homestead.com/sprouted-barley-fodder/
https://www.attainable-sustainable.net/sprouting-grains-fodder/
http://blogs.cornell.edu/organicdairyinitiative/resources/sprouted-fodder/
I wouldn’t try to grow enough to truly feed livestock, especially large livestock, but even small amounts can see big boosts in production and health. (So can 2-4 day sprouting grains and beans, instead of feeding that grain dry or just-soaked.)
Sprouts for Preppers
Sprouts can check a lot of boxes for us and our livestock. We have to plan for the high seed use and additional drain on water supply, but it gives us an option for fresh foods and healthier foods even in very small spaces and commonly even without light.
Even if we’ve had some bad sprout experiences before, it’s worth giving them another go, from sprouted grains to microgreens and fodder mats.

Growing seeds in my apartment continued post! Click here if you want to read the last one.
Last time I left off with putting tons of seeds in damp paper towels, and I also posted a guide on how I prepare the soil for them. This is how the germination process went:
I checked the paper towels the next day, and basil was already germinating, so I just transported it to a cup quickly, nothing else had germinated yet. Then, 2 days later, we had a lot of random germination!
I found some germinated okra, kale, basil, few big tomatoes, and a whole lot of cherry tomatoes. You can see me here planting 2 seeds of okra in a 6-pot container. I didn't take a picture, but I had also planted one seed of basil, one of kale, and 3 of big tomatoes in there, I also planted an entire container of cherry tomatoes! Almost all of them germinated at once, in only 2 days, it was surprising how fast it happened! Keeping the bag of seeds on a radiator speeds things up considerably, I've never had germination this fast.
Also, since it's now a few days later, I can show you how these 2 containers came up:
Mostly everything came up, some cherry tomatoes might still push their way up, though I'd be perfectly happy with 8 cherry tomato plants in total. That tall grass-like thing is not something I planted on purpose, it could be a wheat seed that got lost in the compost, or something I just brought in from the forest, I'm leaving it in due to curiosity, I wanna see what happens.
Next day, the rest of okra germinated, and I put them into individual cups, was very surprised by the fact that my okra had 100% germination rate! It was seeds taken out of an okra I grew myself. We'll see how good they do.
So what happened next, is I had a very stressful day, filled with chores, to the point I didn't get to the seeds until late evening, when I remembered I was supposed to check. And of course, during that day, absolutely everything germinated, and not only that, but the roots grew so quickly they became entangled with the paper towels. Not ideal! It means I missed the optimal planting time, and the seeds might have a bit of trouble getting used to the soil and taking root in there, instead of paper towel. Stressed, I quickly planted everything.
Picture is dark because it was very late, and I was doing this on my kitchen floor. See how all of the roots are very long already, and some cups even have paper towels in them, because I couldn't wrench them out without breaking the roots? Some seeds will still make it and be alright, some of them started coming up the next day, so it wasn't a disaster.
The cup with many seeds in it is yellow tomatoes, I put them all together because at this point, I was already running out of soil, and I don't need lots of these plants, if 2-3 make it I'll be happy. The big container is planted full of big tomatoes, but there's also some kale, eggplant, and a ground cherry in there. I can transplant them out when they grow a few leaves. The rest of cups are basil, principe borghese (sauce tomato), cabbage, and kale.
The big tomatoes are my most important and treasured plant, and these were not planted ideally, so, just in case they did badly, I put a new batch of big tomato seeds germinate, I can never have too many because once they grow into transplants, I can share them around. Everyone wants big tomato plants if they're healthy.
So the only thing that had not yet germinated here in 4 days were peppers, and my batch of yellow pepper seeds did not germinate at all, which makes me a bit grumpy (not that I could germinate them any year), because they're capable of producing early, and I wanted to have some.
On the 5th day, however, red peppers started germinating! And ground cherries, finally. Here you can see me plant 2 varieties of red peppers, ground cherries, and some eggplant. The next day a whole lot more of red peppers germinated, so here I planted an entire big container of them. (at this point I already had prepared a new bucket of soil.)
(note: all of the seeds you see in this post had soil peppered on top of them afterwards, and were covered up, I only took pictures like this to show you the spacing!)
I've never grown eggplant very successfully, so I have nothing smart to say on it, but I am going to talk about ground cherries because I've strUGGLED with having them come out of the soil. The thing is, ground cherry seeds are teensy tinesy tiny, they're the tiniest little seed, so you can't plant them deep, right, that can't really push its way up a lot of soil. So you can only pepper a little bit of soil on top. But, this makes them vulnerable to drying out, the top of the soil is the first thing to dry out. So you have to keep spraying them, multiple times a day. They are literally so sensitive to drying out, if they're dry for 1 hour it's over. They're dead.
And the thing is, basil also has tiny seeds, right? But basil germinates and comes out of the soil rapidly. If you watch over it for 1 day, it's out and you're golden, it's makin roots down there, getting that water, all is good. But ground cherries take DAYS. They are fickly and even once they come out, if you leave them in the sun for 2 hours and they start feeling dry, they will also die. I can't even remember the amount of times I had a ground cherry seedling come out after meticulous care, only for it to die at the first sight of sun.
A good work-around for this, is to plant them in a sealed container, so the soil can't dry out, and your plant is good and happy in the damp conditions, unti it starts growing true leaves. (True leaves are sensitive to catching diseases when wet, so you want them to be in the clear air). However,, I forgot,, to ensure I had closed containers for this purpose,,, so now,,, I have to be on strict ground-cherry watch if I want it to live.
So, everything I put to germination succeeded, except for yellow peppers, which never succeed, maybe the seeds I have are just too old or something, I'll try putting some directly in the soil to see if they prefer that. I still have a second batch of big tomatoes to plant, and then I'll start germinating herbs and flowers!
Here's how my plant shelf looks like now, with all of the plants that are out of the soil and need the sunlight:
It's still going very slow, since it's February and there's very limited amount of light in the day, but the last week we had sunny afternoons, and I've been bringing the plants in the direct sunlight in my bedroom, and it helped them a lot! Even just few hours of sunlight a day makes them stronger.
