when prompted. damian might simply explain that he, a hero, is happy. he may interject to explain that his family, all heroes, are happy.

but if he were to look closer at his siblings, he would see the exhaustion, the burnout etched under their eyes. he would see his sister falling asleep in her chair because she hasn't slept in days, too quick to let her demons catch up with her. he would see his brothers finding solace in other people's problems, in substance at times.

he would see his father, the unbreakable bat, disappear into the long night desperate to save his city from unending slaughter. if damian were to observe his father's quieter moments, he would see him slumped alone, he would see his father's loneliness.

to be a hero is to forsake personal happiness; to be a hero is to put the world's concerns before one's own.

this is where he differs from his family members, damian thinks. he grew up a selfish boy, indulgent in self-interest. he finds his happiness in the joy of nature, the beauty of unbridled life itself. he finds happiness in paints, in colors, in transcribing the beauty of nature. this feeling: fleeting, unlike the guilt & trauma that he carries with him into each new morning.

it would be silly for henley to deny that she’s thrilled to be meeting nathan ford. sure, his group isn’t big time like the horsemen, but if big time means waiting around at the beck and call of some anonymous benefactors for years on end with no word, henley is more than happy to scale down to a smaller operation. her signature red lip is pulled into a pinched smile, mischief barely contained in her eyes. her posture is all ease, but she’s thrumming with anticipation–– the idea of finally making a difference again is intoxicating.

‘ mr. ford, ’ she says pleasantly as he rounds the corner, ‘ i have to say, i was surprised to receive your call. ’ henley pushes nimbly off the wall to extend her hand in greeting. ‘ at the risk of flattering myself, i’m wondering what you’d want with a name. ’

THERE IS AN ANGER THAT LIVES DEEP in the heart of every man.    For some it is like an inferno,    blazing furiously and consuming everything in its path.    For others it is like a glowing coal,    warm and unassuming but dangerous when touched.    And for people like Thomas Shelby,    it is like a great iron furnace,    temperature controlled by the owner but prone to an explosion when some poor sod comes along and fans the flames.    Nathan had fanned the flames. 

Thomas stands there,    blood making a crisp red line down the side of his angular face where it seeps from the fresh wound above his eyebrow.    His chest heaves with effort and he stands with his hands up,    palms out,    as if warning Nathan to stop. 

They had beaten the shit out of each other for long enough.    Thomas doesn’t even remember what it had been that had started the fight this time ; all he knows is that he’s far too drunk and far too tired to take another hit. 

For all I try to hide it,     I’m just like you. 

Tommy pauses for a moment,    eyes searching for some sign of a joke from the other.    He doesn’t see one.

THEY HAVE FALLEN INTO A SORT OF ROUTINE.    Once in a while Nate shows up,    they sit and talk and drink whisky,    and then Nate leaves.    But this time it’s gone later than usual.    This time there are two empty bottles of whisky on the floor instead of just one.     It’s rare that Thomas Shelby finds someone who can drink with the likes of him ; but Nate may be able to hold more liquor than he can.

They have stopped bickering.    Instead they are taking turns telling stories,    stories of war and death and sorrow.    There is a connection here that Thomas can’t seem to break.    He finds himself giving a shit about Nate now,    where three months ago he’d wanted to snap his neck in his hands.
