Here's part 2 of my Mandarin learning journey. For part 1, go here.
After I left university in 2003, I started working in an office. I was able to scrape together enough money to travel to China for 6 weeks in 2005.
I was 25 years old when I went to China for the first time in October-November 2005. I was traveling on my own, and I really didn't have much money, so it was the backpacking type of travel.
I started in Hong Kong, in Chungking Mansions. Then stayed with a friend of a friend in Guangzhou. Then I bussed to Yangshuo, Guangxi province; then an overnight train to Kunming, Yunnan province. Then buses to Dali and then Lijiang in Yunnan. Then back to Kunming, and then a 36-hour train ride back to Guangzhou (this was before high-speed rail in China), and then finally back to HK for a final week.
This was before smartphones and social media. It was the era of internet cafes in China - that was the only way you could get online. It was also before the Great Firewall (China banned Google in 2010). I kept in touch with my family and friends through email, long-distance phone cards, and Livejournal. My posts are still up, actually (that's the first one; you can use the navigation arrows to go to the next one).
My only way of looking up Chinese vocab when I was there was my Oxford Chinese-English dictionary, which as you can imagine is extremely limited! So I had lots of experiences where I embarrassed the heck out of myself and/or was simply not able to get my point across or understand what someone was saying to me. But that's also just learning a second language. Your skin gets thicker the more you do it. There were plenty of times where I was speaking to people who didn't know any English (see: literally 99% of the people on the train), so I just had to muddle through.
Being a white foreigner obviously helps - most people were pretty curious and friendly. When I was in Lijiang (where there were a ton of Chinese tour groups and hardly any foreigners), people wanted to take their picture with me.
I could say plenty more about this trip, but this is about my Mandarin learning journey. You can go read my account of it on Livejournal if you like. Keep in mind it's my PoV from 2005.
When I came back to Canada, I worked in the same office for about a year until I got totally sick of it, and then I became a bike courier for 9 months. This is relevant to the story. Being a bike courier affords you a lot of freedom, but it's physically tough and the pay is terrible. So I started applying for office jobs again, and I eventually got hired as a receptionist for a woman who was a notary public and immigration consultant. The reason she hired me is because I could speak Mandarin.
So, I worked as a receptionist/legal assistant at that office from 2007 to 2013 using my shitty Mandarin every day. My boss was from Taiwan and had originally been a paralegal at an immigration lawyer's office, until she started her own notary and immigration consulting practice. She was also a certified Chinese-English translator. So, the whole reason I'm a paralegal today is because this one lady wanted a receptionist who spoke fluent English and also understood some Chinese.
There were some really great things and really terrible things about that job. The good: I got to use Chinese every day, I learned how to be a legal assistant (notaries in my province can handle real estate transactions and prepare Wills and Powers of Attorney, and immigration consultants represent immigrants to Canada and prepare and submit their applications), and I got to do some simple translations because she was also a certified translator. I also gained a very rudimentary ability to read some traditional Chinese. Most of our clients were from the Mainland, though, not Taiwan.
The bad things: the pay was terrible (I started at $12/hour and ended at $18/hour, and by the end I was fully doing paralegal-level work - at my current job, I make about $42/hour now before taxes!), during the 2008 economic crash my boss had to cut my hours to 4 days/week because she lost a bunch of money in the stock market, and my boss was a tyrant. She scolded me a lot, and I'd often get in trouble for reasons that totally mystified me. I'm sure some of it was cultural, but I also think she was just unnecessarily harsh a lot of the time.
I knew someone who worked at a big law firm who tried to get me hired there, but their HR said I needed to get a legal assistant certificate, so I eventually went to school for 8 months full-time to get that, and then I got hired at my current law firm. I've been working at my current law firm since 2013.
The drawback for my Chinese learning at my current firm is that it's a legitimate mid-size law firm. There are about 45 lawyers. So everything has to be super professional, which means even though I speak some Chinese, I can't use my busted-ass Mandarin with clients. I know very little legal terminology, so anytime a lawyer wants someone to interpret, I can't really do that. Plus, it's Vancouver, so there are already some legal assistants at my firm who are actually fluent in Chinese who can do proper interpreting.
So, Chinese went back to being my hobby. That meant that there were ebbs and flows. I remember watching The Legend of Zhen Huan (Empresses in the Palace) in about 2015 when there was a super edited version of it on Netflix, and I got into it enough that I found the original series with English subs on some streaming site like Dramacool/Kissasian/its equivalent and watched the whole thing. After that, I watched the first half of Nirvana in Fire before something else grabbed my attention - eventually I need to watch that entire series! I remember learning a bunch of guzhuang vocabulary from those series that I hadn't heard before, like concubines referring to themselves as 奴婢, and people saying 陛下息怒 when the emperor was angry.
But what really happened is that my Chinese languished for quite a while. In 2017 I started planning a trip to Japan that I'd eventually take in 2019, and I started studying Japanese on Duolingo and then Lingodeer. I also discovered Skritter at that time, and used it to practice kanji, which of course I already had a huge head-start on because of Chinese. And I gotta say, even though Japanese has a very complicated writing system, it is SO MUCH easier to learn than Chinese, at least in my experience.
Then the pandemic hit, and I'm a white girl on Tumblr with an interest in Asian culture and a Netflix subscription, so what happened next was - you guessed it - in early 2021, I watched The Untamed for the first time. And when I finished it, I rewatched it again. And then I fell down that entire rabbit hole.
And as ridiculous as it is, The Untamed is what fully reignited my Chinese learning so that I'm at the point today where I've learned about 2900 Chinese characters, and I can watch Liu Yuning's livestream and understand about 75% of it. But let's leave that for the next part of this long-ass story.

How To Legally Transition in British Columbia, Canada
A while ago I said I would make a guide on this so here. Every other guide I found was either outdated for specific to another province so here is an updated one. Mainly writing this for my trans BC friends but anyone can use it. To those who aren’t from BC you can also use this as sort of what to expect if you choose to legally transition as it may be similar in other places. Important: You need to be 19 years old to change your legal name and gender marker in BC without parental permission. Things you will need: - Your original birth certificate. - Two pieces of government issued photo ID. - If you’re from outside Canada, resident or citizenship cards. - If you’re married, marriage certificates. - Photocopy of your receipt for criminal record checks. - A notaries person to also sign your application. Cost: Expect to pay at least $440, that’s how much I spent in total and includes the costs of updating IDs (including passport). Step-By-Step: 1: Criminal Record Check The province of BC requires all applicants to get digitally fingerprinted during the process. This can be done at any RCMP station, no appointment necessary. If you don’t want to be around police then you can find an accredited agency in your area instead, however they may be more costly. Mine costed $55 and it was done by the police. If they ask you why just say you are trans and don’t elaborate further as your response will be recorded if done by police. Once that’s done, ask for a photocopy of your receipt, that’s what you need to send to the government. You will need two pieces of government issued photo ID for this. I used my BCID and Passport as I don’t have a driver’s license.
2: Name Change Application Once you have the receipt you need to send it within 30 days. You can find the applications on the BC Government’s website. If you’re over 19, not married, born in Canada and have no kids then you can apply online here: https://ecos.vs.gov.bc.ca/ Everyone else can apply here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/forms/vital-statistics/vsa529_fill.pdf Once you’re done that, print all necessary documents but don’t send it yet. You need the gender marker change application still. This part should cost $137. If you are under the age of 19 you will also need to write a hand-written letter about why you want to change your name.
3: Declaration Witness Before you can mail your application for your name change you need someone who is qualified to do so to witness you signing your application. I had a lawyer for mine only because my mother is a lawyer. Anyone from a notaries public is qualified for this stage. You can find one here: https://snpbc.ca/
4: Gender Marker Change Application As of January 2022, you no longer need a diagnosis in BC to change your gender marker if you’re over the age of 12, so this process has been made so much simpler. Application: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/forms/vital-statistics/vsa509a_fill.pdf Cost can range depending on what you choose, mine was $54.
5: Mail Your Applications Now that you have everything you need, you must mail it to the Vital Statistics Agency in Victoria. The address will be on your documents. Please remember to include your original birth certificate, photocopy of criminal record check receipt and the signed document given by your witness. If you’re not from Canada then a copy of your permanent resident or citizenship card. After this you now must wait.
6: What To Do After After a while you will receive a letter stating your gender marker has been changed and you must surrender your now old birth certificate. Do not worry, it was already surrendered as it was needed for the name change too and should’ve been sent. You will also receive one from Ottawa about your criminal record check and they will send you a copy of whatever the RCMP or whoever did your fingerprints sent them. After about 10-15 weeks you will receive your Change of Name certificate and your new birth certificate, this is important as you’ll need it to update your IDs. With it will also be a list of everything that will need to be updated afterwards. I am updating my IDs first as everything else will require updated ID.
It is a lot of work but it is so 100% worth it! I hated having to explain why my ID said I was female when the photo clearly had a man on it. I also hated having my full deadname be displayed on my Paypal when dealing with commissions. It’s so freeing not having that burden anymore. I hope this was helpful and if anyone has any questions do feel free to ask :)

Certificate attestation in Canada
Canada's economy is diverse and relies heavily on natural resources, including oil, gas, timber, and minerals. It also has a strong service sector and is known for industries such as technology, aerospace, and finance. So Canada becomes a major centre for migrants who are searching for a better future.
Certificate attestation in Canada refers to the process of verifying the genuineness of a document or certificate issued by a Canadian authority or an authority of another country. Attestation may be required for various purposes, such as immigration, employment, education, etc.
The process of certificate attestation typically involves the following steps:
Notarization: The document must be notarized by a Canadian notary public or a lawyer to verify the identity of the signer and the authenticity of the document.
Authentication: The document must be authenticated by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) to verify that the notary public or lawyer who notarized the document is in good standing and that the seal and signature on the document are genuine.
Legalization: If the document is to be used in a country that is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, it must be legalized by the embassy or consulate of that country in Canada. This involves verifying the authenticity of the document and the signature of the GAC official who authenticated it.
The specific requirements for certificate attestation may vary depending on the type of document, the purpose of the attestation, and the country where the document will be used. It is recommended to consult with the relevant authorities or a professional attestation service for guidance on the attestation process.

Canadian Immigration documents attestation
Canadian Immigration documents attestation in Dubai Canadian immigration documents attestation may need to be attested, or verified as genuine, by an authorized third party before they can be used for certain purposes, such as applying for a visa or permanent residence. This process can typically be done by a notary public or commissioner of oaths in Canada, or by a Canadian consulate or embassy if the documents are being used outside of the country. It is important to ensure that any attestation is done correctly and on the correct copy of the document to avoid any potential delays in the immigration process.
Types of Documents Required for Canada Immigration
There are several types of immigration documents that may be required for various stages of the Canadian immigration process. Application Forms: Depending on the type of immigration program you are applying for, you may need to fill out a specific application form,. - Proof of Identity: You will need to provide government-issued identification, such as a passport or national ID card, as well as other documents that can confirm your identity. - Proof of Funds: You will need to demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself and your family while you are in Canada. - Educational Credentials: You may need to provide copies of your educational qualifications, such as degrees or diplomas, along with official transcripts and English or French language test results. - Work Experience: You may need to provide proof of your work experience, such as letters of reference from past employers or a resume. - Medical Examination: Some applicants may be required to undergo a medical examination before being granted entry to Canada. - Police Clearance Certificates: Some applicants may be required to provide police clearance certificates from all the countries where they have lived for six months or more since the age of 18. Please note that this list is not exhaustive, as the specific documents required will depend on your individual circumstances and the immigration program you are applying for.
Attestation by A lawyer
In certain cases, Canadian immigration documents may need to be attested by a lawyer before they can be used for immigration purposes. This typically happens when the document is related to a legal matter, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or adoption papers. A lawyer can attest the authenticity of the document by reviewing it and confirming that it appears to be genuine. They will then sign and stamp the document, and may also include a statement of authenticity. It is important to note that not all lawyers are authorized to attest documents for immigration purposes. In Canada, only lawyers who are members in good standing of a Canadian law society can attest documents. So, it's important to find a lawyer who is authorized to do so. Attestation Process It's also worth mentioning that the attestation process may vary depending on the type of document and the jurisdiction where the lawyer is located. It's best to consult with the lawyer regarding the process and any fees associated with it. Once the documents are attested by the lawyer, it can be submitted along with other immigration documents for the immigration process. Canada Immigration Documents for Canada If you are in Dubai and need to have your Canadian immigration documents attested, you can do so at the Canadian Consulate General in Dubai. This consulate is responsible for providing consular services, including document attestation, to Canadians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). You can contact the consulate to schedule an appointment, and you will need to bring the original documents as well as a copy of each document that you wish to have attested. It's also important to check the consulate website for any specific requirements, fees, or forms that may be needed. It is important to note that the attestation process may take several days, so you should plan accordingly. Once the documents are attested, you should be able to use them for the purpose for which they were intended, such as visa application. Read the full article

Changed by pandemic, many workers won’t return to old jobs (AP) There’s a wild card in the push to return to post-pandemic life: Many workers don’t want to go back to the jobs they once had. Layoffs and lockdowns, combined with enhanced unemployment benefits and stimulus checks, gave many Americans the time and the financial cushion to rethink their careers. Their former employers are hiring again — and some, like Uber and McDonald’s, are offering higher pay—but workers remain hesitant. Employers and business groups argue that the $300-per-week federal unemployment supplement gives recipients less incentive to look for work. But Heidi Shierholz, a senior economist who researches low- and middle-income workers with the Economic Policy Institute, said health concerns and child care responsibilities seem to be the main reasons holding workers back. In April, she said, at least 25% of U.S. schools weren’t offering in-person learning, forcing many parents to stay home. And health concerns could gain new urgency for some workers now that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said fully vaccinated people can stop wearing masks in most settings. Some workers say the pandemic helped them prioritize their mental and physical health. And in a tight labor market, some workers are also finding that if they hold out, they might get a better job than the one they left.
Unhealthy Dose of Litigation (CNN) It’s not personal, it’s just business. Tell that to tens of thousands of individuals sued by hospitals for ‘medical debt’ they have no way of ever paying. Community Health Systems, Inc. (CHS) is one of America’s largest hospital chains. A CNN investigation found that since March 2020, company-owned hospitals filed at least 19,000 lawsuits against their patients over allegedly unpaid medical bills, even as other hospitals around the country have curtailed similar lawsuits during the pandemic. CHS’s 84 hospitals are concentrated in the South, but stretch across 16 states from Alaska to Key West, Florida. The hospitals have sued patients for as little as $201 and as much as $162,000. Most defendants didn’t hire a lawyer or fight the lawsuits, and judges often rendered a default judgment in the hospital’s favor. Attorney’s fees and interest are often tacked on. Once a court rules against a defendant, a hospital can proceed to put a lien on the defendant’s house or garnish part of their wages. Many garnishments were against people working for low-wage employers like Walmart. A researcher who has studied hospital lawsuits said that it’s typical for hospitals that sue patients to only make a tiny fraction of their revenue from those lawsuits. “It’s not keeping the lights on for the hospitals—they don’t need to be doing this,” she said. “But for the patients... They’re choosing between medical care and food.”
Argentina Halts Beef Exports for 30 Days to Contain Prices (Bloomberg) Argentina’s government is limiting exports of beef, a staple in the country, in the latest unorthodox move to try to contain runaway inflation that’s approaching 50% annually. President Alberto Fernandez told a key beef export association that they won’t be allowed to sell the product abroad for 30 days, according to a Production Ministry statement released late Monday. “The president expressed his concern over the sustained growth in domestic beef prices over the last few months,” according to the statement. The country’s beef exports in 2020 amounted to roughly $3 billion, but the government may be more focused on the political cost of falling domestic consumption.
Spain Turns to Corruption Rehab for Officials Who Can’t Stop Stealing (NYT) Carlos Alburquerque isn’t your typical rehab candidate. He’s a 75-year-old grandfather living in Córdoba, a city in southern Spain. He was a town notary before he retired in 2015. He hasn’t touched drugs or alcohol in years. But his isn’t your typical rehab program: It’s an 11-month boot camp to reform corrupt Spanish officials and “reinsert” them into mainstream society. “Repairing the damage is what is left for me in this life,” said Mr. Alburquerque, who is serving a four-year prison sentence for stealing around 400,000 euros, nearly a half a million dollars, in his work drawing up contracts and deeds. That such a program exists in Spain may say much about the country’s belief in second chances as it does about how corruption has captured the public imagination here. Flip open a newspaper or turn on the radio: You will hear of schemes, scandals and skulduggery which almost always lead back to the public purse. According to Ángel Luis Ortiz, a former judge who now runs Spain’s prisons, the boom-bust cycles of Spain’s economy had led it to a long history of fraudsters and betrayals of public trust, he said. But at least, corruption rates in Spain were no worse than in other European nations, Mr. Ortiz said, just 5 percent of all crimes.
Russia’s northernmost base projects its power across Arctic (AP) During the Cold War, Russia’s Nagurskoye airbase was little more than a runway, a weather station and a communications outpost in the Franz Josef Land archipelago. It was a remote and desolate home mostly for polar bears, where temperatures plunge in winter to minus-42 Celsius (43 degrees below zero Fahrenheit) and the snow only disappears from August to mid-September. Now, Russia’s northernmost military base is bristling with missiles and radar and its extended runway can handle all types of aircraft, including nuclear-capable strategic bombers, projecting Moscow’s power and influence across the Arctic amid intensifying international competition for the region’s vast resources. Russia has sought to assert its influence over wide areas of the Arctic in competition with the United States, Canada, Denmark and Norway as shrinking polar ice from the warming planet offers new opportunities for resources and shipping routes. China also has shown an increasing interest in the region, believed to hold up to one-fourth of the Earth’s undiscovered oil and gas.
Cyclone kills 19 in India, heavy rains lash parts of Gujarat state (Reuters) A cyclone on India’s west coast has killed at least 19 people and damaged infrastructure and agriculture, while heavy rains continued to lash some regions even as weather officials said on Tuesday that the storm’s intensity had weakened. The cyclone Tauktae, which made landfall in the western state of Gujarat late on Monday, has hit power supply in 2,400 villages in the state as a thousand electricity pylons were damaged, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said in a media address. Nearly 160 roads have been destroyed, 40,000 trees uprooted and several houses damaged, Rupani added.
India reports record day of virus deaths as cases level off (AP) India’s total virus cases since the pandemic began swept past 25 million on Tuesday as the country registered more than 260,000 new cases and a record 4,329 fatalities in the past 24 hours. The numbers continue a trend of falling cases after infections dipped below 300,000 for the first time in weeks on Monday. Active cases in the country also decreased by more than 165,000 on Tuesday—the biggest dip in weeks. But deaths have continued to rise and hospitals are still swamped by patients. Infections in India have surged since February in a disastrous turn blamed on more contagious variants as well as government decisions to allow massive crowds to gather for religious festivals and political rallies.
In Gaza, grief and destruction (Washington Post) In a conflict already marked by harrowing scenes of tragedy, one image stood out. Rescuers in Gaza City on Sunday pulled out Suzy Eshkuntana, a 6-year-old, from the rubble of a building that had once been her home, but which was flattened by Israeli airstrikes. She was covered in dust but alive. Her mother and all four of her siblings were dead. It’s not clear why the Eshkuntanas’ home was brought crashing down. Israeli authorities told reporters that they had targeted a network of tunnels used by Hamas militants that may have run beneath the area where the family lived. “The collapse of the tunnel system,” Reuters reported, “caused the houses above to collapse and led to unintended civilian casualties, the military said.” In Israel’s telling, there are many more “unintended” casualties in Gaza. According to local Health Ministry officials, the death toll in Gaza climbed to 212 people, including 61 children and 36 women, as fighting entered its second week. Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, home to some 2.1 million people, the majority of whom are classified as refugees by the United Nations. That’s a legacy of the displacements that followed Israel’s creation in 1948 and the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Children make up about half of Gaza’s population. The territory has been under Israeli blockade since 2007, after Hamas took power following a rift within the Palestinian Authority. “Living conditions in Gaza are bleak: 95 percent of the population does not have access to clean water, according to [the United Nations], and electricity shortages periodically bring life to a halt,” my colleagues reported. “The territory has one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, World Bank statistics show, and the United Nations estimates that roughly 80 percent of the population relies on international aid to survive and access basic services.”
The New Arab Street: Online, Global and Growing (NYT) The video traveled at 4G speed, leapfrogging across international borders, social media platforms and social justice movements: a young Palestinian woman in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, shouting in furious English at a Jewish man, “You are stealing my house!” “If I don’t steal it, someone else will steal it,” he retorts. Within days—as Israel bombed the coastal territory of Gaza, Palestinian militants there launched rockets at Israel, and Arab and Jewish mobs faced off in Israeli cities—the video had rocketed from young Palestinians’ social media feeds into the Arab diaspora, then lit up the internet, kindling outrage around the world. It used to be that when Palestinians were under fire, protests would follow in the streets of Arab cities. That potential for combustion forced Middle Eastern and Western leaders to keep a wary eye on the temperature of what was called the “Arab street.” This time, a week into an Israeli bombing campaign that has killed 212 Palestinians in Gaza, the reaction from Arab capitals has been muted and protests small and scattered. Instead, solidarity with the Palestinians has shifted online and gone global, a virtual Arab street that has the potential to have a wider impact than the ones in Middle Eastern cities. The online protesters have linked arms with popular movements for minority rights such as Black Lives Matter, seeking to reclaim the narrative from the mainstream media and picking up support in Western countries that have reflexively supported Israel.
Ransomware hits AXA units in Asia, Irish healthcare (AP) The Thai affiliate of Paris-based insurance company AXA said Tuesday it is investigating a ransomware attack by Russian-speaking cybercriminals that has affected operations in Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Meanwhile, a cyberattack on a public health provider in New Zealand took down information systems across five hospitals, forcing staff to cancel some elective surgeries and creating all sorts of other problems. It was unclear if the event was linked to a cyberattack that has nearly paralyzed Ireland’s national healthcare IT systems. The Irish government’s decision not to pay the criminals means hospitals won’t have access to patient records—and must resort mostly to handwritten notes—until painstaking efforts are complete to restore thousands of computer servers from backups.
The Places Ranked Best for Expats in 2021 (Bloomberg) Taiwan, Mexico and Costa Rica have been ranked as the top spots to live and work abroad in 2021, based on their cost of living, ease of settling in and overall quality of life. The U.S. was ranked only 34th out of 59 places, largely because of how expats viewed quality of life in America, according to a new survey published Tuesday. Taiwan topped the charts for the third year in a row in the survey of 12,420 expats conducted by InterNations, a Munich-based expat network with about 4 million members. The top 10: Taiwan, Mexico, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia, Ecuador, Canada, Vietnam.

The man denied boarding the flight home with his niece over lack of a certified consent letter
It’s not uncommon to see parents extend an invitation to their child’s best friend or closest cousin to join them on a family trip. With that in mind, Dex Clarke and his sister Simone Pratt knew what it meant to include S’naia, Clarke’s eight-year-old niece, in his plans to visit family in Toronto with his young son and daughter.
She knew from her daughter’s past travels to the United States that her brother could be asked for a consent letter from the parents or guardians for a designated adult or group to supervise a child when travelling abroad by Canadian border officials.
Clarke tells CityNews that when the four of them arrived at Pearson Airport from Montego Bay, he handed the letter to a Canadian immigration officer.
But a week later, when the family was set to return home, they found themselves in a situation at the Air Canada check-in counter that left S’naia behind.
According to Clarke, the Air Canada employee continued to reiterate that S’naia could not board the plane with him unless he had a hard-certified letter from her parents or guardian, emphasizing it was a travel requirement. But according to immigration lawyer Colleen E. Coleman Wright, no such requirement exists for Jamaican national minors returning home.
While she says there is no stated requirement for the letter to be notarized or certified, she does advise taking that extra step in hopes of preventing these types of scenarios.
CityNews reached out to the Consulate General of Jamaica as well as Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration, and Citizenship Agency to confirm but did not hear back in time for publication.
Canada’s Immigration and Citizenship page outlines the requirement if a minor child is travelling with a person other than their parents or legal guardian, stating that "the letter does not need to be certified" for entry into Canada. Similar information is written on the CTA’s website, "There is no Canadian requirement to have the consent letter witnessed by a notary public. However, we strongly recommend doing so, as border officials will be less likely to question the authenticity of the letter."
CityNews reached out to Air Canada inquiring about the rules concerning a Jamaican national minor returning home with a non-certified consent letter.
While Air Canada declined to comment on this specific case, they noted that the obligation is on the customer to ensure they have the correct documents, that each situation is unique and that customers alone are positioned to know their particular circumstances, referencing the travel documents for children tab on their website.
But what confuses Clarke is that the Air Canada agent did not request a signed, certified consent letter for his two children, as he was the only adult travelling with the minors.
Clarke called his sister in Toronto to return to the airport to pick up S’naia, an already stressful situation made more difficult as airline staff allegedly rushed him to make a flight that his eight-year-old niece couldn’t board.
Pratt was on the phone with her brother from Jamaica, who had called from Toronto Pearson Airport as all this was unfolding.
S’naia had to stay in Toronto and returned to Jamaica a week later after arrangements were made for her to fly as an unaccompanied minor, costing Pratt an additional $175 Canadian, which included the change fee. Clarke adds that he understands the need for the letter, saying, "We wouldn’t want a lapse of security to cause anything or for someone to get trafficked."
But that consideration should’ve been made in that it was the same letter used to enter Canada, with the same family, and that she was returning home with a Jamaican passport in hand.

For example, paralegals are another group of people who can work as legal experts and help people or clients with their specific range of legal issues in lower-level courts such as the Small Claim Court. There is also another group of people who can serve or offer legal services called notary publics. These legal experts or professionals can legally register all your properties. According to the professionals from Paralegal Toronto, notary publics can prevent fraud and identity theft to a significant extent.
What Services Do These Legal Experts Offer?
Do you know anything about notarizing a document? Do you know what it means? Let us explain you. Imagine you have bought or inherited a car, land, or a house. It is not necessary to mention that you have to register this ownership legally; otherwise, you may easily face many legal problems in the future. It is possible that the person who sold you this land or house is a forger and has also sold it to one or more other people. Or other people may be found and claim that they have also inherited the land or house you have inherited.
These are all the legal problems associated with owning a property. The only way to eliminate all these problems is to register them legally. Notarizing a document exactly means this: Legal registration of a property. Now, the next question that you may have is who can register the property legally. Notary publics are legally allowed and appointed to notarize your document. Besides, they are the ones who can prove and confirm in court whether you are the owner of this property or not.
What Do They Do?
Notary publics confirm that you are a property's real and legal owner. They confirm that the signature on the property is yours, and the owner's signature and identification are the same. In addition, they can confirm that there has not been any force or threat to sign the deal sheet.
Can They Help Us with Consulting about Our Legal Issues?
No. Notary publics can just offer the services mentioned above. They are not allowed to consult about your legal issues. As we explained earlier, other legal experts can help you in this regard. For example, lawyers are the ones who you can consult when you are challenged with a specific legal issue. Or, if you cannot afford to ask a lawyer to help you, you can ask paralegals. Paralegals are allowed to help people solve their legal issues in some countries. For example, in Canada, paralegals pass legal courses and have an exam, and in case of success, they can help people in some courts and some legal problems such as landlord and tenant conflicts.
